2009 Subaru Forester problems

The Subaru Forester (Japanese: スバル・フォレスター, Hepburn: Subaru Foresutā) is a compact crossover SUV that has been manufactured by Subaru since 1997. The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design. A performance model was available for the second-generation Forester in Japan as the Forester STi.

First generation (SF; 1997)

The Forester was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 1995 as the Streega concept, and available for sale in February 1997 in Japan, and to the US market in 1997 for MY1998. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs; the idea was inspired by Volkswagen (VW). It was built in the style of a station wagon, but had a taller stance, higher h-point seating, and an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Subaru advertising employed the slogan "SUV tough, Car Easy". It used the Impreza platform but with the larger 2.5-liter DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine from the Subaru Outback, making 123 kW (165 hp; 167 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Japan

In its domestic market, the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, known in the US as the Subaru Outback Sport. However, the Outback Sport remained in production for the U.S. market. The Forester appeared after the introduction of the Nissan Rasheen in Japan with a similar appearance, and the Forester's Japanese competitors include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Because of the Forester's low center of gravity, it meets the United States federal safety standards for passenger vehicles and does not require a "risk of rollover" warning label on the driver's visor. Size- and price-wise, it fits between the shared Impreza platform and the larger Legacy.

The automatic transmissions used on AWD-equipped vehicles will normally send 60% of the engine's torque to the front wheels and 40% to the rear wheels, using a computer-controlled, continuously variable, multi-plate transfer clutch. When the transmission detects a speed difference between the front and rear axle sets, the transmission progressively sends power to the rear wheels. Under slip conditions, it can achieve an equal split in front and rear axle speeds.

When accelerating or driving uphill, the vehicle's weight shifts rearward, reducing front-wheel traction, causing the transmission to automatically send torque to the rear wheels to compensate. When braking or driving downhill, the vehicle's weight shifts towards the front, reducing rear-wheel traction. The transmission again compensates by sending torque to the front wheels for better steering control and braking performance. If the automatic is placed in reverse or first gear, the transmission divides the torque 50/50 to both front and rear wheels. The manual transmission cars are set up with a near 50/50 torque split as a base setting, and it varies from there. Essentially, manual cars are set up with more bias towards the rear than automatic cars.

Common 2009 Subaru Forester problems

The Subaru Forester 2009 has been noted for several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most frequent issues is related to the engine, specifically oil leaks and engine reliability. The FB-25 engine in the 2011-plus Foresters tends to consume oil, while timing chains can go bad at higher mileage. Failing catalytic converters and issues with the exhaust system are also not uncommon. At higher mileage, the head gaskets may leak, which could potentially lead to more expensive repairs.

Another problem reported by Forester owners is a rattling exhaust shield. This issue is characterized by an occasional metal rattling noise that comes at certain engine RPMs. The repair for this problem is not very expensive, as it typically involves re-securing a loose exhaust heat shield.

For those considering a diesel model, it is essential to check that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has been properly maintained. DPF-equipped cars require frequent motorway journeys to ensure regeneration, and a clogged-up DPF can be costly to replace. Additionally, if the DPF has been shut off partway through regeneration, it can lead to contamination of the oil system with fuel, causing damage to the engine.

Subaru generally performs well in terms of reliability, with the brand placing 10th overall out of 32 car brands surveyed in the latest data. However, this specific generation of the Forester was not included in the survey.

In summary, potential buyers of the Subaru Forester 2009 should be aware of the common problems related to the engine, exhaust, and diesel particulate filter (for diesel models). Regular maintenance and checks can help mitigate these issues and ensure a more reliable ownership experience.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: JF2SH63699G
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: - I bought a set of 4 Cooper Adventurer P225 55 R17 tires from Pep Boys in La Habra , CA on [XXX]. - On [XXX], I had to replace one due to a flat, and they noticed that I had a serious bulge in another. I replaced those two tires, putting the new ones in the front. - On around [XXX], friends helping me with adjusting my side mirror noticed that I had two serious bulges, one in each of the front tires that had been replaced. - They were suspicious about the same damage in two tires, so they checked & found that similar number Cooper Adventurers sold at Pep Boys at the same time as mine were among a number of Cooper tires that had been recalled for sidewall separation bulges. They suggested I contact you. - There are already 5 complaints about these particular tires for sidewall bulges; mine will make 6. Yet one of the recalled tires only had 2 complaints. - I have photographs of the tire bulges in my phone, but I'm having trouble sending them to my laptop. I will contact you to add the pictures to this report as soon as I sort out the difficulty. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-11-20
  • VIN: JF2SH66649H
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: THIS VEHICLE HAS A TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) THAT IS FAULTY AND UNNECESSARY. WHEN THE TIRES ARE AT THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF PRESSURE THE TPMS LIGHT APPEARS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DURING COLD WEATHER AND WILL NOT TURN OFF. IF YOU WANT IT TO GO AWAY YOU HAVE TO PAY A TECHNICIAN TO RESET IT. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE MANUFACTURER MADE IT SO IT CANNOT BE DISABLED. AS I STATED IT IS FAULTY AND UNNECESSARY AND PEOPLE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CONTINUALLY PAY TO HAVE IT RESET OR REPLACED. AS WELL I OWN A 2008 IMPREZA WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THE WINDSHIELD DEFROST/WIPER SITUATION IS ALSO A SERIOUS ISSUE! EITHER THE DEFROST DOES NOT HEAT THE WINDSHIELD ENOUGH FOR THE WIPERS TO CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD OR THE WIPER ARMS ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO APPLY ENOUGH PRESSURE TO CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD. IN RAIN AND SNOW CONDITIONS THE WINDSHIELD IS VERY HARD TO SEE THROUGH AND QUITE FRANKLY DANGEROUS. I HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY PEOPLE WITH THIS MODEL VEHICLE COVERING MANY GENERATIONS WITH VERY FEW TO VERY HIGH MILES AND THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH ALL GENERATIONS OF THIS MODEL.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-05
  • VIN: JF2SH63669H
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: FAIRLY RECENTLY I HAD MY RADIATOR REPLACED DUE TO A LEAK. COUPLE WEEKS INTO MY NEW ONE, I WENT TO START MY CAR AND A PROOF OF WHITE SMOKE SHOT OUT THE EXHAUSTS WHICH I NEW WAS NOT OK. I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN IT FELT LIKE IT WAS IN LIMO MODE AND THE CHECK ENGINE, TRACTION CONTROL, AND CRUISE CONTROL LIGHTS ALL STARTED BLINKING - THEY WEREN'T ON BEFORE. SO I SHUT MY CAR OFF AND TOOK MY MOM'S TO WORK. I LATER FOUND OUT THAT I HAD NO COOLANT, BUT THERE WAS NO WARNING OR INDICATION THAT I WAS LOW. FROM THAT DAY ON MY CAR HAS BEEN GOING THROUGH FULL RESERVOIRS OF COOLANT BY THE DAY WITH NO VISIBLE LEAKS, HEATING+COOLING, FAND A ULL RADIATOR UP TO THE BRIM. I'M ASSUMING MY ISSUE IS A HEAD GASKET LEAK AT ONLY 86,000 MILES...THAT IS TERRIBLE PRODUCT QUALITY - I CAN'T JUST GO AROUND AND PAY $2000 IN REPAIRS FOR A CAR I RELIED ON AND HAVE ONLY DRIVEN FOR 10K MILES. THAT'S JUST RIDICULOUS AND THERES NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT WITHOUT $2000 TO SPEND BUT SELL IT AND SCREW SOMEONE ELSE OVER.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-17
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JF2SH64629H
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: WAS DRIVING ABOUT 20 MPH ON A 2 LANE SECONDARY ROAD WHEN AN APPROACHING VEHICLE'S DRIVER GOT MY ATTENTION AND SAID MY CAR WAS ON FIRE. I FOUND A PLACE TO SAFELY PULL OFF THE ROAD AND DIRECTED MY SPOUSE TO QUICKLY GET OUT, MOVE AWAY FROM OUR CAR AND CALL 911. THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD SO I OPENED IT CAREFULLY AND SAW A WALL OF FLAME, JUST ABOVE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, AND APPROXIMATELY THE WIDTH OF THE RADIATOR AND ABOUT 6 INCHES IN HEIGHT. I HAD A BOTTLE OF WATER WITH ME WHICH I USED TO DOUSE THE FLAMES BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE OUR MECHANIC FOUND A BURST TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLING LINE WHICH HAD SPRAYED FLUID INTO THE LOWER ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND ONTO THE HOT CATALYTIC CONVERTER WHICH IGNITED THE FLUID. JUST BEFORE I PULLED OFF THE ROAD THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED OPERATING EFFECTIVELY AS I NOW KNOW THE FLUID WOULD HAVE BEEN LOW. AT A HIGHER SPEED THE VEHICLE OPERATION WOULD HAVE BEEN DRAMATICALLY HAMPERED AND THE POTENTIAL FOR A MORE EXPLOSIVE SITUATION WOULD HAVE OCCURRED IF THE FLAMES HAD BEEN FORCED FURTHER UNDER THE VEHICLE.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-08
  • VIN: JF2SH64619H
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 2009 SUBARU FORESTER THROUGH THE KIA DEALERSHIP IN WEST CHESTER, PA. I PAID $5,600 FOR THIS USED CAR, BELIEVING IT WAS A GOOD DEAL BASED ON THE SALESMAN'S RECOMMENDATION. DURING THE PROCESS, THEY TOLD ME OF THE REPAIRS THAT MAY BE NEEDED, BUT WITH NO MENTION OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM SPECIFICALLY. FIVE WEEKS LATER, I WAS DRIVING HOME ON BACK ROADS AND HEARD A LOUD SOUND. I DISCOVERED THE CAR'S EXHAUST SYSTEM HAD BROKEN OFF, DUE TO SEVERE RUST. THE ENTIRE SYSTEM WAS RUSTED OUT AND FALLING APART. MY MECHANIC LATER INFORMED ME THAT THE CAR NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOLD GIVEN THIS DANGEROUS, TERMINAL ISSUE AND THAT IT WAS NOT AT ALL SAFE TO OPERATE. I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND THIS OUT. I WAS DISTINCTLY TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE A VERY SAFE AND RELIABLE CAR FOR MY FAMILY TO OWN. THE SALES PERSON EXPRESSED HOW THOROUGH THE UPKEEP OF THE CAR HAD BEEN OVER ITS LIFETIME AND EXPRESSED THAT IT COULD GO ANOTHER 50,000 TO 100,000 MILES. I COULD NOT PICK IT UP UNTIL THE NEXT DAY, SO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD PERFORM A THOROUGH VISUAL AND MECHANICAL INSPECTION. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A THOROUGH INSPECTION GIVEN THE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS CONDITION OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THE SALESPERSON I DEALT WITH IS NO LONGER EMPLOYED AND THERE WAS A NEW GENERAL SALES MANAGER WHO WAS VERY RUDE, UNPROFESSIONAL AND UNWILLING TO HELP ME. IN ADDITION, I SUBSEQUENTLY NOTICED THAT THERE ARE MAJOR DISCREPANCIES WITH THE DATES ON THE INSPECTION/EMISSION STICKERS ON THE CAR. THE DATES INDICATED ARE 2017, 2018, AND 2019. IT IS UNCLEAR WHAT INSPECTIONS WERE ACTUALLY COMPLETED ON THIS VEHICLE. AS A CONSUMER, I WAS RELYING ON THE EXPERTISE OF THE DEALERSHIP TO FULLY DISCLOSE ANY AND ALL SAFETY CONDITIONS CONCERNING A USED VEHICLE. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT SEEKING HELP. • Manufacturer: SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Subaru is recalling certain model year 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback vehicles, certain model year 2006 through 2012 Tribeca vehicles sold before January 2012, and certain model year 2009 through 2012 Forester vehicles sold before January 2012. Up to 78,650 of these vehicles may have been equipped with accessory puddle lights that, when illuminated, brighten the area under the doors of the vehicle. A short circuit can develop when either the puddle light or connector are exposed to an electrolytic moisture source (such as road spray that has road salt in it) and it penetrates the circuit board of the puddle light or the pins of the puddle light connector(s).
  • Consequence: Over time, migration of the moisture into the circuit board and/or into the connector cavity, may result in a short circuit of the puddle light system. This may generate heat which may melt the plastic resulting in smoke or fire.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional fused-harness, free of charge. The recall began February 19, 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information.

Negative 2009 Subaru Forester car reviews

  1. Curt Erdman 2024-11-17

I purchased my 2009 Forester brand new with the expectation that it would last for at least 200,000 miles without any major issues. However, at 90,000 miles, it began to leak oil from one of the head gaskets. Although it was no longer covered by the factory warranty, I confidently invested in the necessary repairs, which cost close to $3,000. Despite this setback, I remain a loyal Subaru owner and look forward to many more trouble-free miles.

  2. Cedrick Cummings 2024-11-13

The Forester is a dependable car that performs well in the snow and is great for hauling large items when seats are folded down. Although I usually get Honda or Toyota, I decided to buy this car a year ago because I always wanted a Forester. While I prefer the past models, I am confident that this car will last until over 150k. The car gives decent gas mileage of 25 avg for mainly city driving. Although the car has little power for accelerating on the highway, I am still able to drive it safely. While the interior looks cheap and the fabric on the doors is not ideal, the power button on the driver side for seat adjustment is easy to use. The front passenger seat is a bit low, but overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and would recommend it to others.

  3. Tremayne Reichel 2024-11-11

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some thoughts on the car you mentioned. While it does have a non-turbo 4 engine, it may not be the most powerful option out there. However, it still has some great features that make it a reliable choice. In terms of mileage, it gets around 15 to 16 in the city and 20 to 21 on the highway, which is not too bad. Although it may rattle a bit, it's still a comfortable ride. The carpet finish could be improved, but overall it's a nice car. It may take a few turns to start in the rain, but once it's up and running, it's good to go. The navigation system may not be the easiest to use, but it can still get you from A to B. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!

  4. Presley Pollich 2024-09-17

I am confident in stating that the Subaru did not meet my expectations. The vehicle lacked power, had a poor interior design, and below average mpg. Additionally, I had to replace the engine at 120k miles and all 4 wheel bearings due to rust. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to replace this vehicle.

  5. Wallace Dicki 2024-07-26

I bought this car used for around $8k when it had just about 161K on the odometer. It was to replace a car that was totaled due to an inattentive freeway lane-changer, which was a graduation present. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it, but was not a fan of the notch-y first gear. As a younger male driver, I was looking for something practical and safe, yet fun. I also wanted some comfort for occasional long drives. I had trouble finding a car that I liked and that didn't cause minor back aches even on a short test drive, except for this one. The only downsides are that it could use a few more inches of trunk space and more factory stereo options. The 80w preamp is barely enough for the 4 main speakers, let alone the optional 6 speaker set. Additionally, I've read that the NAVI is not very user-friendly.

Positive 2009 Subaru Forester car reviews

  1. Roscoe Eichmann 2024-10-19

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I recently purchased my 5th car, a 2014 Subaru turbo Forester.

  2. Elmer Conn 2024-09-28

I could have paid less for my Forester if I had been more patient, but I'm happy with my purchase. The extras I could have added for the same price were not terribly interesting, and there were trade-offs (standard, turbo) that I wasn't willing to make. While there are some minor issues with the stereo volume, plastic/felt interior, goofy high chrome exterior trim, engine high speed 'rev', and blind spots, these are more industry-wide technology-style issues than Subaru's 'fault'. I'm not thrilled with the armrest, but my dog likes it, and I have some issues with the iPod integration kit. Overall, after 15,000 miles and 6 major road-trips from the snow to the desert, I still love my Forester.

  3. Maximillian Bernier 2024-09-25

I'm so glad you're considering this car! After test driving both the CR-V and RAV4, I decided to go with this one. I was looking for an SUV that wouldn't break the bank, and this one fit the bill perfectly at under $20,000. The 2009 style is nice, and the 4wd system is really impressive. The mileage is great too, as long as the mechanics tune it right. After the first service, the mileage got even better, although it did dip a bit after the second service. However, after the third service, it's back to being great again! I recently took it on a long trip to Chicago and Cincinnati, and it got an impressive 30 mpg. Around town, it gets about 22 mpg, but overall it averages around 25 mpg. I haven't had any issues with rattles or mechanical problems, and the quality is top-notch. I've mostly had Toyotas in the past, but this car has definitely exceeded my expectations. The only thing I've noticed is that it can be a bit sensitive to high/cross winds, but that could just be the tires. Overall, I highly recommend this car!

  4. Wyatt Koss 2024-09-12

We purchased our Forester Turbo for just over $26k USD. The interior is incredibly spacious, with enough legroom for four adults of decent size. The turbo delivers a powerful punch between 2500RPM-5000RPM, which is more than enough for normal driving. While a 5th gear would be nice to have, it's not really necessary as the car goes fast enough. The Tiptronic feature is a nice touch. With 100% highway driving, no AC, and windows open at a constant speed of 60MPH (2100RPM), you can expect to get up to 27mpg. The XT is sure to outperform any other 4-cylinder car (with the exception of the really high-end ones) and it will certainly keep up with the 6's and 8's. The trunk space is adequate and it has a 5-star crash rating.

  5. Jamaal Gaylord 2024-09-12

As a first-time Subaru owner, I have been thoroughly impressed with this vehicle. I drive an average of 30k miles per year and have not experienced a single problem with this car (knock on wood). The PZEV feature is hardly noticeable, and it is wonderful to be able to reduce emissions so effortlessly! With an average of 28mpg (20% city/80% highway) mostly at 75-80 mph in the mountains, this car can go anywhere (deep snow, snow-packed roads, and ice) and still provide a comfortable ride. The 5-speed manual is essential, as the non-turbocharged automatics can be sluggish. I have even taken it on mild off-road trails, and the clearance/traction combination is fantastic. As long as you take it slow, it will make it with flying colors!
