Super Sport, or SS, is the signature performance option package offered by Chevrolet on a limited number of its vehicles. All SS models come with distinctive "SS" markings on their exterior. The SS package was first made available for the 1961 Impala. Some of the other models bearing the SS badge include the Camaro, Chevelle, El Camino, Impala, Monte Carlo, Nova and Chevrolet Pickup Trucks. Current SS models are produced by the GM Performance Division.

General Motors Company's Australian subsidiary Holden offers SS models in its range of Holden Commodore sedans and sportwagons, and also in the Holden Ute range of two-door coupé utilities.

History

In December 1956, Chevrolet unveiled a show car based on the first generation (C1) Corvette called the Corvette Super Sport. In early 1957, the Chevrolet Corvette SS debuted — a custom built racing sports car that was the first Chevrolet to wear the SS badge.

In 1961, the SS "kit" (known as a sport and appearance package) was offered on any Impala for just $53.80. The package included Super Sport trim for both the interior and exterior, chassis reinforcements, stronger springs and shocks, power brakes, spinner wheel covers, and narrow-band whitewall tires. The car's dashboard received a Corvette style passenger hand bar and a steering column mounted 7000-rpm tachometer. Chevrolet built 491,000 Impalas that year and 453 had the SS package, of which 311 received the 348 cid and 142 received the 409 cid. Since 1994, the SS package has been used on a variety of GM vehicles, including pickup trucks, four-door sedans, and front wheel drive cars.

Both historically and today, the Super Sport package has typically included high-performance tires, heavy-duty suspension, and increased power, along with a variety of other performance and appearance upgrades.

  • Summary: A few days ago I was heading home from work and sport mode automatically turned on and the “service power steering” warning came on. Then the steering wheel stiffened up 2 times for a few seconds while I was driving. I looked into it and there was a recall before I purchased the vehicle and it was repaired also. But it is the same problem. I contacted the dealer ship but they said there’s no warranty on recalls. I did purchase the car from a used car dealership and still paying it. Car still isn’t running and seems like an expensive repair.

  • Summary: Collapsed lifter on cyl 6. Lifter tick / knock since 100,200 miles. Car has a warranty until 5/2026 or 171,000 miles and they refuse to honor it. Car has a steering issue. Two separate chevy dealerships unable to fix. vanderevere charged me 500-600 to fix NOTHING AT ALL. serpentini chevy charge me 500-600 and it was repaired for a few months problem is back. Serpentini quoted me 6,000 plus tax to fix my collasped lifter, and at that price its a full engine replace from what it looks like, which means the AFM lifter will fail eventually again and ill need to spend even more money. There is a class action lawsuit out on alot of v8 2007-2022 engines which can be found at (https://www.classaction.org/media/harrison-et-al-v-general-motors-llc.pdf) that the original class action lawsuit. I've also posted the class action lawsuit pdf, as well as what was said price wise by serpentini. Also posted are messages from the drone from jim butler kia dealership. Notice they try to use my oil changes as a way to deny liability, if u call AUL the place that issues the warranty, they cite modified parts (new headers mufflers etc) because they are new but not from GM so they are considered "modifications" and they were all placed on the car by the previous owner and is exactly the same as it was sold to me by jim butler kia. THIS IS THE SAME BAD COMPONENT PART # THAT WAS ALSO RECALLED ON ALL CAPRICE POLICE PURSUIT VEHICLES WITH MANUFACTURER RECALL # 22010 AND OUTLINED IN NHTSA REPORT 16V-160. GM HAS FAILED TO ADEQUATELY ADDRESS THE ISSUE BY KNOWINGLY STILL HAVING VEHICLES WITH BAD COMPONENTS ON THE ROAD ENDANGERING THE SAFETY OF THE SS OWNERS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL AS WELL AS OTHER MOTORIST. A SEARCH OF THE AUTO ENTHUSIATS WEBSITE SHOWS SEVERAL MENTIONS OF SS SEDANS IN THE 2014-2016 MODEL YEAR RANGE EQUIPPED WITH THE BAD PARTS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL SO THIS POTENTIAL FAILURE IS NOT LIMITED IN SCOPE. I HAVE INFORMED GM OF THIS ISSUE AND THEY REFUSE TO TAKE FURTHER ACTION. THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP FROM AN EARLIER REPORT.

THIS SAME VEHICLE WAS HELD BY CHEVROLET FOR ABOUT 90 DAYS FOR A QC HOLD FOR REASONS THAT WERE UNDISCLOSED PRIOR TO TAKING DELIVERY SO I HAVE NO IDEA IF THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN DAMAGED IN SHIPMENT SOMEHOW. THIS SUDDEN FAILURE SEEMS TO BE THE SAME FAILURE AND REQUIRES THE REPLACEMENT OF THE EXACT SAME PARTS THAT CHEVROLET HAS ALREADY ISSUED A RECALL FOR CONCERNING 2014-2016 VEHICLES OF THE SAME MODEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A SECOND OPINION AND THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT TENSIONER CABLE WAS COMING APART AND STEEL PIECES WERE FALLING ALL OVER THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND FLOOR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE REPAIR WAS A PERMANENT REMEDY. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,000.

PART OF THE INFOTAINMENT 'MYLINK' SYSTEM IS AN APP THAT CONTROLS PANDORA, AN INTERNET RADIO PROGRAM, VIA A BLUETOOTH CONNECTION ON THE TOUCHSCREEN OF THE RADIO. WITH THIS SYSTEM, THE USER IS ABLE TO CHANGE TRACKS, CHANGE STATIONS, VIEW WHAT'S PLAYING, AND PLAY/PAUSE, ALL WHILE THE USER'S PHONE IS STOWED AWAY FOR DRIVING. PANDORA IS MY PRIMARY SOURCE OF MUSIC THESE DAYS, AS THE CAR DOES NOT COME WITH A CD PLAYER, AND I CHOOSE NOT TO PAY FOR XM SATELLITE RADIO, AND RARELY FIND ANYTHING TO MY LIKING ON AN FM OR AM STATION. WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE CAR, THE APP FUNCTIONED AS IT SHOULD. UNTIL SOMETIME TOWARDS THE END OF FEBRUARY OR THE MIDDLE OF MARCH. THE MYLINK APP WOULD START AS IT SHOULD, BUT AS SOON AS I WOULD TRY TO CHANGE A STATION, THE MYLINK SYSTEM WOULD 'LOCK UP' ALL FUNCTIONALITY TO MY PHONE. I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO CHANGE ANYTHING IN THE PANDORA APP, AND IF I WERE TO TRY AND MAKE OR RECEIVE A CALL, I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO HEAR OR BE HEARD BY THE PERSON ON THE OTHER END OF THE LINE. A PHONE RESTART SIMPLY MADE ME LOSE THE PANDORA FUNCTION ALL TOGETHER ON THE MYLINK SYSTEM, AND I WOULD HAVE TO TURN THEN IGNITION OFF, WAIT, AND THEN TURN THE IGNITION BACK ON FOR THE APP TO RESTART. I'VE HAD MY VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE TWICE NOW AT TAYLOR CHEVROLET, WITH THE ONLY ANSWER BEING FROM THEM, 'THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE PHONE, THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO WITH THE VEHICLE.' I HAVE NOT BEEN PROVIDED ANY SORT OF CLEAR ANSWER OR SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DISTRACTING SITUATION FOR ME TO BE IN, AS I'VE STATED BEFORE, PANDORA IS MY MAIN SOURCE OF MUSIC IN THE VEHICLE AND HAVING TO CONTROL THE APP FROM MY PHONE ISN'T TOO FAR AWAY FROM TEXTING AND DRIVING (AND EASILY MISTAKEN FOR SUCH TO LAW ENFORCEMENT VIEWING FROM OUTSIDE).

OK RETURN 12/1/16 "AGAIN" FROM THEIR (RINKE) CALL, THEY SAID THEY GOT THE PART NO PROBLEM 20 MINUTES TOO REPAIR, SO I TOOK THE CAR IN "AGAIN", GET THE CAR BACK AND THE PERSON SAID SOMEHOW THEY ORDERED/GOT THE WRONG PART! SO HERE WE ARE TODAY 3/8/2017, NO CALL FROM DEALER, STILL WITH SEATBELT RECALL UNSERVICED. APPARENTLY ALL THEY REPLACED EACH TIME, IS THE SEATBELT COVER. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY STATIONARY, PARKED ON THE BACK LOT OF THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP NEAR MY HOUSE. CHEVY ISSUED A STOP SALE PREVENTING DELIVERY, WHILE ALLOWING THOSE THAT TOOK DELIVERY PRIOR TO 7/7/16 TO CONTINUE DRIVING A CAR THE COMPANY HAS DEEMED NOT SAFE ENOUGH TO SELL. THERE ARE CURRENTLY NUMEROUS 2014, 2015, AND 2016'S ON THE ROAD, BUT SOMEHOW MINE, WITH ONLY 17 MILES ON IT, MAY EXPERIENCE A SEATBELT FAILURE FROM FATIGUE AND IS THEREFORE MORE UNSAFE THAN A 2014 WITH THOUSANDS OF MILES ON IT. DESPITE NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO DETERMINE WHEN THE FIX WILL BE AVAILABLE, I AM LEFT TO HAVE FAITH THAT A FIX IS COMING. I HAVE PAID MY MONEY FOR THE CAR, BUT I CANNOT DRIVE IT. I'M ONLY ALLOWED SUPERVISED VISITS.

  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet SS and Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicles (PPV) that were previously repaired under NHTSA recall number 16V-518. The repair may not have been performed properly. The driver's seat belt tensioner cable may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.
  • Consequence: If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to determine whether the new seat trim was installed and replace the trim as necessary. Dealers will also inspect and replace the pretensioner cable assembly, as necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began November 17, 2020. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.     I purchased this car back in August 2014 with only 2700 miles on it. It has to be the best value I have ever had the opportunity to purchase. Spend a little time reading up on and knowing what this car is about, and you would have a very hard time finding a car that covers more aspects from drivability to curb appeal with any less than a 'wow'! This car is sweet. It was built in the land down under, and there is no question that it was built with pride. You just cannot match the dollar for dollar, bang for the buck. It's a sleeper Super Sport that gives cars like the BMW5 a run for their money, doing it with dimes to the dollar to boot! I own it, and I love it. If you can, try to touch one, drive it, and step into it! It's first class!

    I drove the first '15 at the dealer the day it came off the truck and fell in love with it at first sight/drive, especially because it was a 6-speed manual! I kept going round and round, but as a GM supplier, there were better deals on other cars, but none of them were like the SS - maybe the ATS-V + $25k. I didn't do anything. Then last week, I 'stumbled' upon information on the net about a GM 15% discount on selected '15 left-overs, and the SS was on the list. I went to my dealer's site and behold, the Heron White '15 was still there less 15%, + an additional discount because the owner had put 1,000 miles on the odometer - too good to be true?? Nope, what they advertised was the real cost - no gimmicks. One downside - automatic transmission. But for the kind of discount that I got, I can handle driving an automatic. I bought it!!! I've had it for less than a week, but I love driving it - I can't wait to put lots more miles on it!! As a serious car person, I can tell you that you'd be hard-pressed to find a similar car in any price range, especially when you throw in the manual transmission option. This morning, I was on the Holden website and saw the sweet El Camino (us old folks can remember that name), and somehow, GM needs to keep Holden alive - they've got too much bad history shutting down good divisions.
