2005 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, popularly referred to as the 'Evo', is a sports sedan and rally car based on the Lancer that was manufactured by Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 until 2016. There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a Roman numeral. All generations use two-litre intercooled turbo inline four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive systems.

The Lancer was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market the previous year with the Subaru Impreza WRX.

All domestic-market versions, until the release of the Evolution IX in 2005, were limited by a gentlemen's agreement between Japanese car manufacturers to advertise no more than 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp). However, sources say Mitsubishi had already been producing cars with more power but had been underrating the official power outputs in order to comply with the agreement. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-market Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 321 PS (236 kW; 317 hp). Various special versions available in other markets, particularly the UK, have official power outputs up to 446 PS (328 kW; 440 hp).

The tenth and final generation of the Lancer Evolution, the Evolution X, was launched in Japan in 2007, and overseas markets in 2008. The Evolution X was produced for almost 10 years until Mitsubishi retired the Lancer Evolution in April 2016.

Common 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution problems

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 2005 is a high-powered sports car that requires a lot of maintenance and care. One of the most common problems with this car is related to its transmission. The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in the Lancer Evolution 2005 is known for dying around 100,000 miles. Transmission replacement is a costly repair, but regular transmission fluid flushes can help extend the life of the transmission.

Another issue that Lancer Evolution 2005 owners have reported is premature failure of front struts. This problem is quite common and is often reported by members of the evolutionm forum. Other issues that have been reported include evaporator failure, idle control valve problems, and actuator issues. While these problems are not very expensive to fix, they can still be a nuisance for owners.

The Lancer Evolution 2005's interior may also disappoint luxury-seeking folks. While the car offers adequate space for a five-seater sports sedan, the interior is not as luxurious as some other cars in its class. The transmission tunnel is quite prominent, which can make it difficult for taller passengers to get comfortable in the back seat. The cargo capacity of 10.2 cu ft is adequate for a road trip, but the interior may not be as comfortable as some other cars in its class.

When it comes to reliability, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 2005 is not a dealbreaker. However, the car was designed for performance rather than reliability, so some issues may arise. The sorted suspension and capable AWD drivetrain make the Lancer Evolution 2005 one of the best performers when the roads go for a toss. The independent front and rear suspension with coil springs and anti-roll bars tuned to the stiffer side, shocks from Bilstein, 17" Enkei rims wrapped in the wide 235-section Yokohama tires, and a limited slip differential all contribute to the car's impressive performance.

In summary, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 2005 is a high-powered sports car that requires regular maintenance and care. The car's transmission is known for dying around 100,000 miles, but regular transmission fluid flushes can help extend its life. Other issues that have been reported include premature failure of front struts, evaporator failure, idle control valve problems, and actuator issues. The car's interior may not be as luxurious as some other cars in its class, but the sorted suspension and capable AWD drivetrain make it one of the best performers on the road.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-05-02
  • VIN: JA3AH86D25U
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: MY CAR WAS PURCHASED ON 11/23/05. ONE WEEK AFTER PURCHASE, SERVICE MANAGER INFORMED ME THAT MY OIL WAS REALLY LOW AND ADDED A QUART OF OIL. HE ADVISED ME TO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL REGULARLY. I NOTICED THAT I HAD TO ADD A QUART OF OIL EVERY 1,000 MILES OR SO. I VOICED MY CONCERN TO THE SERVICE MANAGER WHEN I HAD MY FIRST OIL CHANGE AND WAS TOLD THAT "A QUART OF OIL LOSS PER 1,000 MILES IS NORMAL". I CHECKED MY OIL REGULARLY TO AVOID ANY PROBLEMS UNTIL ONE DAY, I FOUND OUT ABOUT OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS. I TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT IT AND HE ARRANGED TO HAVE IT DONE ON MY NEXT OIL CHANGE. THE FIRST OIL CONSUMPTION TEST REVEALED ABNORMAL RESULTS WHICH PROMPTED THEM TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. ANOTHER OIL CONSUMPTION TEST WAS DONE AND IT SHOWED A MORE FAVORABLE RESULT. I CHECK THE OIL LEVEL REGULARLY AND STILL NOTICE THAT I ADD A QUART OF OIL EVERY 1,000 MILES. I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT IT AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NORMAL. I WENT TO ANOTHER DEALER TO HAVE THE OIL CONSUMPTION CHECKED. THE FIRST OIL CONSUMPTION TEST REVEALED A QUART OF OIL LOSS PER 1000 MILES AND THE SECOND TEST REVEALED AN ABNORMAL RESULT OF A QUART AND A QUARTER OIL LOSS PER 1000 MILES. I WAS THEN TOLD BY THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TO CONTACT MITSUBISHI CORPORATE OFFICE TO REPORT THE RESULT. NOW I'M ASKING FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE IN SOLVING THIS PROBLEM. THANK YOU. *TR

Negative 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution car reviews

  1. Keagan Jacobi 2024-08-13

I think this car is amazing, but it does have some turbo lag. It handles like a charm in the twisties, but in a straight line, it falls short at the top end. I have seen Cobra, STi, Camaro SS, and even lowly SRT-4 models that are faster. However, don't get me wrong, this car is awesome for what it was made for---rally; it turns like it's on rails.

  2. Colton Hartmann 2024-06-29

That's a great value for the price and performance!

Positive 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution car reviews

  1. Zackary Stanton 2025-01-07

For the automotive enthusiast, the Lancer Evolution 8 is not just a car, it's an experience. The Evo is the ultimate expression of the passion and pleasure of driving. It's truly an amazing machine for those who can appreciate its nuances. So, get in it and DRIVE!

  2. Jayson Murray 2024-10-29

I'm so happy with my '05 Evo! I've had it for 4 months now and it's been a joy to drive. The car starts up beautifully, looks amazing, and performs like a supercar (it's a shame that Mitsubishi isn't doing well). The acceleration is a bit slow at 2k/rpm, but once you hit 3k/rpm, the turbo kicks in and there's an incredible surge of power that's easy to control. And if you need to slow down quickly, the Brembo brakes and ABS work together seamlessly. The transmission shifts smoothly and the engine is powerful. The stiff chassis gives me confidence when I'm driving. Overall, it's a great car that's a pleasure to drive.

  3. Olen Stark 2024-10-13

This car is so much fun to drive! It handles better than any other car in its class, and the acceleration is really impressive. It may not be a dragster, but it's definitely quick. If you want to fully experience the potential of this car, you'll definitely want to drive it a lot.

  4. Axel Smith 2024-10-01

This is a great production car available at a reasonable price. I had the opportunity to test drive both the EVO 8 and the WRX STi, and while the Evolution has slightly less power and torque (276hp/286ft-lb. vs 300hp/300ft-lb), it boasts a much better suspension (much stiffer for better performance), a more advanced AWD system, and the Recaro seats in the EVO hug you, unlike the STi seats which were designed for larger individuals and provide no support. I have yet to be beaten in a race and it is the most enjoyable daily driver I've had the pleasure of riding in, let alone owning.

  5. Chaim Macejkovic 2024-09-07

Your 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII sounds like a blast to drive! It's always comfortable and handles turns and straight lines with ease.
