1994 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-05
  • VIN: 1FTCR10U7RP
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: FUZION TOURING TIRES P195/70R14 91T TREAD SEPARATING AT <14KMILES. I BOUGHT THIS SET OF TIRES AND RIMS USED FROM A FRIEND WHO HAD BOUGHT THE SET OF TIRES FROM ON ONLINE TIRE RETAILER, IN EARLY 2013 (TIRE DOT CODE JEFJ CAN 4412 MADE IN CHINA). THE RIMS AND TIRES WERE INSTALLED ON A 1996 FORD RANGER 2WD INITIALLY AND THEN ON MY 1994 FORD RANGER XLT 2WD. FRONT TWO TIRES BEGAN TO FEEL WOBBLY AND VIBRATE EXCESSIVELY. UPON INSPECTION, THE TIRES WERE DISFIGURED AND OUT OF ROUND. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION BOTH FRONT TIRES APPEARED AS IF THE INNER BELTS HAD PEAKED IN THE CENTER OF THE TIRE ON THE TREAD SURFACE (LIKE THE TREAD SURFACE HAD BEEN FOLDED AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE TIRE), BUT NOT ALL THE WAY AROUND THE TIRES. THIS WAS THE OBVIOUS CAUSE OF THE VIBRATION. TIRES REPLACED AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. THE REPLACEMENT TIRES WERE PUT ON THE REAR AND THE TWO REMAINING FUZION TIRES WERE MOVED TO THE FRONT. A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER, ONE OF THE FUZION TIRES NOW ON THE FRONT REPEATED THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD WITH THE OTHER TWO. OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE TIRES FOR 3 OF 4 TO GO BAD IN EXACTLY THE SAME WAY WITH IN SUCH A CLOSE TIME RANGE. THE 4TH TIRE APPEARS TO BE OK, HOWEVER DUE TO THE PROBLEM WITH THE OTHER THREE, I AM REPLACING IT TOO. IF YOU HAVE THESE TIRES AND EXPERIENCE VIBRATION, IMMEDIATELY INVESTIGATE THE SHAPE OF THE TIRE TREAD SURFACE FOR DISFIGUREMENT - IF YOU FIND ANY, IMMEDIATELY REPLACE THE TIRE. I CAN PROVIDE PHOTOS AS NEEDED. *TR

UNFORTUNATELY, FORD INFORMS ME THAT THE PART IS DISCONTINUED, AND MY MECHANIC IS UNABLE TO FIND A REPLACEMENT PART ANYWHERE. I AM CURRENTLY TRYING TO FIND A MACHINE SHOP THAT CAN MAKE THE PART. WITHOUT PROPER KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ACTIVE AND AGGRESSIVE RUST CAN LEAD TO LOSS OF STEERING, CONTROL, AND SHIFTING LOADS AS REAR LEAF SPRING BRACKET HAS ALREADY FAILED AFTER HITTING A POTHOLE. BODY MOUNTS HAVE RUSTED LEAVING THE CAB WITH POTENTIAL TO FALL OFF, OR SHIFT DURING A SIMPLE DRIVING MANEUVER . FRAME HAS PANCAKES OF RUST FLAKING OFF AT THIS TIME IN IT'S AGE (NOW 18 YEARS). ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-01-11
  • VIN: 1FTCR10A9RU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: COMPLAINT: HIGH RISK OF ACCIDENT DUE TO ENGINE SHUT DOWN. SUBJECT: IGNITION MODULE SAFETY COMPLAINT. 6 OUT OF 7 BAD COMMENTS: PROBLEM: 1994 FORD RANGER PICKUP DIES FREQUENTLY AND SPORADICALLY AFTER IGNITION MODULE REPLACEMENT BY AUTO MECHANIC. FIRST 2 OEM MODULES FROM ADVANCE AUTO TEST BAD AT PARTS DEALER. THIRD MODULE IS FORD MOTOR CRAFT AND IS ASSUMED GOOD. SEVERAL NEW PARTS INSTALLED INCLUDING CRANK SENSOR, FUEL FILTER, FUEL RELAY, TIMING BELT, EEC (COMPUTER), WATER PUMP, EEC RELAY. SPORADIC DYING CONTINUES. FORD MODULE TESTED AT AUTO ZONE AND FAILS, BUT NEW AUTO ZONE DURALAST MODULE IS TESTED FOR COMPARISON AND PASSES. MECHANIC RETURNS MODULE AND ORDERS NEW ONE FROM ADVANCE AUTO. IT FAILS TEST IN STORE. MECHANIC ORDERS ANOTHER THAT PASSES AT ADVANCE BUT FAILS AT AUTO ZONE ON DURALAST TEST. I INSTALL MODULE AND IT FAILS A QUARTER MILE FROM HOUSE. MECHANIC GETS ANOTHER MOTOR CRAFT MODULE FROM FORD THAT PASSES AT ADVANCE AND FAILS AT AUTO ZONE. I DON'T INSTALL IT. THAT MAKES 4 OEM MODULES THAT FAILED AND 2 MOTOR CRAFT. FINALLY, I INSTALL AUTO ZONE MODULE THAT PASSED TEST AT AUTO ZONE. NO FAILURE FOR 4 DAYS AND COUNTING. LOCAL FORD DEALER TRIED TWICE TO FIND THE PROBLEM AFTER THE FIRST MOTOR CRAFT MODULE WAS INSTALLED AND DID NOT LOCATE THE PROBLEM. THEY DID NOT HAVE AN OUT OF VEHICLE ANALYZER. MY CONCLUSION: THERE IS A STRONG POSSIBILITY THAT OTHER PEOPLE WILL ENCOUNTER THE SAME PROBLEM. MY VEHICLE DIED ON THE ORDER OF SEVERAL DOZEN TIMES OVER A SIX MONTH PERIOD (ALMOST DAILY). LUCKILY I LIVE IN A RURAL AREA AND AM QUICK AT HITTING THE EMERGENCY BLINKER. AFTER AWHILE,I BOUGHT A USED CAR AND ONLY DROVE THE TRUCK TO TEST IT. SAFETY HAZARD: UNEXPECTED DYING ON BUSY HIGHWAY OR AT INTERSECTION COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. PLEASE LET ME KNOW THAT YOUR DOING SOMETHING. FORD WON'T. *TR

  • Summary: 1994 FORD RANGER, HAS A CRACKED FUEL FILLER HOSE THAT CAUSES FUEL TO SPILL OUT WHEN FILLING THE TANK, DURING WARM WEATHER YOU CAN GET TO 3/4 OF A TANK BEFORE FUEL SPILLAGE STARTS, IN WINTER JUST A LITTLE OVER 1/2 TANK. WHEN I APPROACHED THE DEALER ABOUT GETTING PARTS TO REPAIR I WAS TOLD THEY ARE ON BACKORDER. HIS COMMENT TO ME WAS THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF RANGERS OUT THERE, THOSE THAT LEAK AND THOSE THAT HAVE BEEN FIXED. IN OTHER WORDS THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FORD HAS WITH THE RANGERS THAT THEY ARE CHOOSING TO IGNORE. IN CHECKING OTHER SOURCES IT SEEMS TO BE RANGERS FROM AT LEAST 1993 - 2009 HAVE THIS ISSUE. *TR

  • VIN: 1FTCR10A7RP
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: 3 OUT OF 4 LEAF SPRING BRACKETS (THOSE THAT ATTACH THE LEAF SPRING TO THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK) RUSTED THROUGH TO THE POINT OF COMPLETE SEVERING THE CONNECTION OF THE LEAF SPRING TO THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK. THE 4TH BRACKET WAS ALSO REPLACED AT THE URGING OF MY MECHANIC SINCE IT APPEARED TO BE CLOSE TO BREAKING AS THE OTHER 3 DID. THESE BRACKET FAILURES WERE A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE AND PUT THE SAFETY OF ALL PASSENGERS AT RISK FOR PERSONAL INJURY. I PERSONALLY KNOW SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR FORD RANGERS. THESE VEHICLES NEED TO BE RECALLED AND FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY HAD TO REPAIR THEIR TRUCKS COMPENSATION SHOULD BE MADE.

HAD TO REPLACE ALL FOUR HANGERS ON LEAF SPRINGS AND SHACKLES DUE TO THEM BEING RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKE. DEALER SAID THIS IS NORMAL AND I WILL ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE BRACKETS HOLDING THE FRONT SPRINGS. MY EXHAUST IS THE ORIGINAL AND THE TRUCK HAS 147,000 MILES ON IT. I WOULD EXPECT THE EXHAUST TO RUST OUT BEFORE THE FRAME BUT I GUESS I AM WRONG. I AM STARTING TO WORRY ABOUT THE SAFETY OF ME AND MY KIDS. I STILL HAVE THE PIECES THAT WERE REPLACED. TRUCK WAS ALSO ORIGINALLY EQUIPPED WITH AN UNDERCOATING ON THE FRAME. I GUESS THIS DID NOT HELP. *TR

Great truck! It sounds like you really love it. Have you thought about keeping it instead of trading it in?

  2. Quinton McClure 2024-10-19

My Ranger has the 2.3 4cyl w/100hp and while it may not be the fastest, it has been a great truck to drive with impressive off-road capabilities.

  3. Kenyon Goodwin 2024-06-15

This truck has been well-maintained by its original owner, with an impressive 278,000 miles on it and no oil burning. While there are some minor issues with rough idling and occasional check engine light, these can be easily addressed. The 2.3 engine may not be the most powerful, but it still delivers a respectable 20 mpg on average, even with the five-speed. The eight spark plugs can be a bit tricky to change, but this is a small inconvenience. Additionally, the body is rust-free, although the rear spring hangers may require some attention. Overall, this truck is a reliable and durable choice for those in need of a hard-working vehicle.

  4. Koby Muller 2024-05-23

The vehicle is tough and has a good metal build. It corners well and its twin I-beam front suspension helps mitigate outboard front wheel tuck. The 4.0 engine uses no oil and supplies ample power. The manual 5-speed transmission affords great versatility. Overall, I would rate the truck an 8.0.

The Ford Ranger line of used cars is often overlooked, but it's actually a great truck for the price, especially if you can find one with low miles. I've seen Rangers priced about $500 lower than Dakotas or S-10 trucks. However, I would recommend staying away from the 4-cylinder trucks. The Ranger is a fun truck to drive, and even the 2-wheel drive can handle some heavy off-road duty. To make your Ranger the best truck for the real world, you can do some cheap customizing. Just add 15-inch wheels and tires, and lift blocks on the rear. Now you're ready for muddy country roads or a comfortable cruise on the interstate. Find your Ranger and have a blast!

I bought this truck used in 1996 with only 15,000 miles on it. Over the years, it has been a reliable companion, providing me with nine years of trouble-free service. I only had to replace a few items such as the battery, brakes, temp gauge sender, tires, and a $15 sensor. Surprisingly, the clutch, starter, exhaust, and other parts are still original. Even after all these years, there is not a spot of rust on it, despite being parked in the same spot every day in the Cleveland area. Not a single drop of oil on the floor either. It is, without a doubt, the most dependable vehicle I have ever owned, and I still enjoy driving it. I cannot recommend it enough!

Hey there! I just wanted to share with you that I got my 1994 Ford Ranger for an amazing deal of only 1000 dollars! It had 328,000 miles on it when I bought it, and as far as I know, it still has the original engine. I've only had to replace the starter and the fuel pump, and soon it will need a new clutch, but other than that, it still runs like a charm at 337,000 miles!

  3. Ruben Turner 2024-11-16

I have been driving my Ranger for over 5 years now, and it has proven to be a reliable vehicle. Although I purchased it used, it has only required regular maintenance such as oil changes, belt replacements, front brakes, and new tires. The only issue I had was when the stick stopped working, but a colleague at work suggested it might be a hydraulic clutch. I spent just $1.19 on a can of fluid and filled the clutch reservoir, and it was good as new. While I may consider purchasing a more fuel-efficient vehicle for my daily commute, I have no plans to part with my trusty little truck until the wheels fall off.

I have the Mazda badged version of the '94 Ranger (B3000), which is identical except for body cosmetics. I bought it used with 75K miles almost 20 years ago, and now it has 183K. The 3.0 V6 can be a bit anemic, especially when climbing hills on the freeway (I often have to downshift to 3rd gear), but it gets the job done. The truck is super reliable -- I only had to replace the 5-spd. manual trans at around 130K because the grease monkey at the lube joint didn't tighten the drain plug or fill it up after draining. The cost was only $700 for a rebuilt trans found online and $200 for installation with a mechanic friend. Compare that to the $4K or $5K it takes to replace a modern auto trans in many vehicles. Unfortunately, you can't find manual trans anymore... I've had to replace the brakes, shocks, wheel bearings, master cylinder, idler pulley, and tires, but that's just normal wear and tear for a vehicle this old. I was thinking of getting something newer, but the horror stories of maintenance with these computerized wonders terrify me ($1500 to fix power sliding doors on minivans, $9K to replace a sensor deep in the bowels of a Toyota engine... it goes on and on). I've decided to keep this

  5. Harvey Will 2024-10-01

This truck has been an absolute gem for the 214,425 miles that I've owned it. It has great gas mileage and provides a smooth ride. I have not encountered any issues with it whatsoever. I would be thrilled to own another vehicle as reliable as this one has been.
