2017 Chevrolet Ss problems

Super Sport, or SS, is the signature performance option package offered by Chevrolet on a limited number of its vehicles. All SS models come with distinctive "SS" markings on their exterior. The SS package was first made available for the 1961 Impala. Some of the other models bearing the SS badge include the Camaro, Chevelle, El Camino, Impala, Monte Carlo, Nova and Chevrolet Pickup Trucks. Current SS models are produced by the GM Performance Division.
General Motors Company's Australian subsidiary Holden offers SS models in its range of Holden Commodore sedans and sportwagons, and also in the Holden Ute range of two-door coupé utilities.
History
In December 1956, Chevrolet unveiled a show car based on the first generation (C1) Corvette called the Corvette Super Sport. In early 1957, the Chevrolet Corvette SS debuted — a custom built racing sports car that was the first Chevrolet to wear the SS badge.
In 1961, the SS "kit" (known as a sport and appearance package) was offered on any Impala for just $53.80. The package included Super Sport trim for both the interior and exterior, chassis reinforcements, stronger springs and shocks, power brakes, spinner wheel covers, and narrow-band whitewall tires. The car's dashboard received a Corvette style passenger hand bar and a steering column mounted 7000-rpm tachometer. Chevrolet built 491,000 Impalas that year and 453 had the SS package, of which 311 received the 348 cid and 142 received the 409 cid. Since 1994, the SS package has been used on a variety of GM vehicles, including pickup trucks, four-door sedans, and front wheel drive cars.
Both historically and today, the Super Sport package has typically included high-performance tires, heavy-duty suspension, and increased power, along with a variety of other performance and appearance upgrades.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-24
- VIN: 6G3F25RW6HL
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Right rear sealed wheel bearing failed and was just replaced at 50,564 miles at a cost of $1,142,82, parts, tax, and labor. I have seen correspondence from approximately 12 other owners of this model vehicle (12,500 imported to the USA by Chevrolet over 4 years), who have all experienced similar failure of front and/or rear bearings at 40-50k miles. These bearings reside in the knuckle assembly of the suspension system. Failure of these bearings can cause fires, accidents, and/or other more catastrophic damage. Fortunately, I noticed the noise of the failing bearing before any incident occurred. Sealed bearings, which cannot be serviced as regular "open" bearings are at intervals, should not fail so soon. Open bearings can easily last over 100k miles with regular service. It is unreasonable for owners to expect $4,000+ in seal replacement expense at such low mileage. Chevrolet should pay for these repairs and provide a better bearing unit.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-15
- VIN: 6G3F15RW2HL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I AM COMPLAINING ABOUT THE BRAKES ON MY 2017 CHEVROLET SS. THE CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND EXPERIENCES VERY ANNOYING BRAKE SQUEAL WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. I HAVE TALKED DIRECTLY WITH CHEVROLET TO NO AVAIL. I HAVE ALSO EMAILED THE BRAKE MANUFACTURER, BREMBO BRAKES, WITH NO RESPONSE TO MY COMPLAINT. I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ISSUE, BUT GM AND THE DEALER SAY IT IS A MAINTENANCE ISSUE, EVEN THOUGH MY VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-20
- VIN: 6G3F25RW6HL
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: MY POWER STEERING HAS A TENDENCY TO FAIL DURING OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD MY POWER STEERING CEASE TO FUNCTION, AND BECOME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AT SPEED. LUCKILY I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY, AND ABLE TO SAFELY MANEUVER THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. I SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND TURNED IT ON TO SEE IF THE POWER STEERING WOULD RETURN. ON AVERAGE IT TAKES ABOUT 5 CYCLES FOR IT TO RETURN TO NORMAL. IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS, I'VE HAD MY STEERING CEASE FUNCTIONING ABOUT 5 TIMES. THE FIRST TWO TIMES DIDN'T CONCERN ME AS MUCH BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS RANDOM. ONLY UNTIL MY STEERING DIED 3 TIMES IN THE SPAN OF 2 HOURS ON 20MAY19, DID I SUSPECT THIS WAS A SERIOUS ISSUE. APPARENTLY GM SENT OUT A TSB ON 2014-2016MY CHEVROLET SS MODELS, BUT MY 2017MY WAS NOT INCLUDED YET MY VEHICLE IS HAVING THE SAME EXACT FAILURE ACCORDING TO THE TSB FOR THE OTHER MY. I'VE HAD THE STEERING FAIL WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY AND DURING TURNING MANEUVERS DURING CITY DRIVING. DURING STEERING FAILURE, THE DIC DISPLAY WILL CAUTION, "SERVICE POWER STEERING, DRIVE WITH CARE".
STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-08-23
- VIN: 6G3F25RW9HL
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
- Summary: WHILE TURNING AT 40MPH THE STEERING WHEEL FAILED AND CAUSED MY REAR WHEEL TO HIT A CURB AND DAMAGE THE REAR WHEELS.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-05-05
- VIN: 6G3F15RW7HL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THE INTERIOR TRIM IS A SHINY CHROME ON THE NAVIGATION AND SHIFTER SURROUNDS. ON SUNNY DAYS THE SUNLIGHT IS REFLECTED OFF THIS TRIM INTO THE DRIVER'S EYES. EVEN SUNGLASSES DON'T NEGATE THIS..IMAGINE SOMEONE WITH A MIRROR REFLECTING THE SUN INTO YOUR EYES. THIS IS DANGEROUS WHEN DRIVING AND LIKELY WILL CAUSE A CRASH, INJURY OR DEATH. THIS IS NOT A SINGLE TYPE OCCURANCE..IT OCCURS NEARLY EVERY SUNNY DAY.

I was on the hunt for a car that could match up to my old 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo - SS SC, which had all the bells and whistles, comforts, and get-up-and-go that I wanted. I test drove eight different vehicles within my price range, but none of them quite hit the mark. While the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 came close, they were too common for my liking. I wanted something unique on the road. Since I had great luck with Chevrolet in the past, I decided to head back to the dealership to see what else they had to offer. I test drove an Impala, but it was too big and lacked the take-off I was looking for. I also test drove a Cadillac, which was comfortable and had decent take-off, but the cost of heated seats was too steep. I had already test driven a Camaro, which had awesome power, but it was too cramped and uncomfortable to ride in. It was all about the engine and the great-looking exterior. That's when I decided to try the Chevy SS, and boy am I glad I did! It was so much fun to drive. The one I test drove was a manual, which was great, but I've gotten lazy over the years and wanted an automatic. Unfortunately, the closest dealer with a black automatic SS was an hour away in heavy traffic. Despite the distance, I decided to go and test drive one. It was worth the drive, but I wasn't happy with the price they offered, so I left the dealership. However, I couldn't stop thinking about that car. A couple of days later, the dealership called me to ask what I didn't like about the car. I explained that I liked the car, but I have a specific way of doing things. I offer them a price, they don't add on all of their extras that I don't want, and then I will decide what I need to put down and borrow for a loan.I offered them a price, but they declined. However, they came back with a counteroffer that I was happy to accept. The car may not have the flashy look of a bad boy Camaro, and some people mistake it for an Impala, but I don't mind. It's a bit smaller than my Monte Carlo, which is what I wanted. It does use a lot of gas, but that's to be expected with its power. Despite its unassuming appearance, it's not your ordinary grandma car - when I blast past people on the highway, they know it's something special. I was sad to leave my Monte Carlo at the dealership, but after two days with my Chevy SS, I'm doing just fine! I've owned the car for over a year now, and I still love it and enjoy driving it. I'm glad I chose the Chevy SS - it may not look like a beast, but it feels great! I was asked to update my review, and even now in January 2018, I still love my car! Unfortunately, it was totaled on 10/05/2018, but it did its job and saved my life. I would have bought another one if there had been a new one available, but life goes on.

I really love this car! It has a great driving experience, advanced technology, luxurious interior, and understated looks, all for about 45k. The best thing about this car is its exhaust. Any complaints you have will be washed away once you start the car up. Performance is top-notch, and with the understated looks, it's not a cop magnet. In fact, the look on people's faces when you floor it or start it up near them is priceless. However, there are some downsides. Build quality is not quite the best, but all the touchpoints are soft. The gas mileage is poor, especially in the city. I get about 11 mpg with the auto. Speaking of the transmission, it is very smooth, but when you want to downshift with the paddles, it will take a second. There are various other very small complaints, but they do not matter in the big picture of this car. If you are looking for a sedan around 40-50k, I strongly urge you to go with this car. Overall, I would rate it 9/10.

This car is a true gem for those who love sport sedans. It has the power to satisfy even the most demanding drivers out there. With its sophisticated adjustable suspension, exhaust function, steering feel and throttle mapping, you can easily switch from quiet sedate street driving to all-out controlled sideways power induced oversteer with just a turn of the control knob from the tour mode to the performance mode. The huge highly visible red caliper Brembo brakes are a clear indication that this car is something special. Aside from the Brembos, there is very little else drawing attention to the true potential bottled up inside. You only need to 'rub the lamp' to unleash the Mr. Hyde disposition. The car can comfortably carry 4 or 5 adults, and the manual transmission puts it in rare company for 4 door, V8 powered sedans. The clutch performs equally well while giving you confidence that it is up to the potential provided by the 6.2 liter Chevy LS3 V8 churning out 415 HP and 415 lb.ft. If you're looking for a full-size, 4-door sport sedan with superb power and an unequalled fun factor, this is the car for you. I have personally driven 2,700 miles on mine and every time I fire up its V8 and slide it into 1st gear, I feel validated in my purchase. I just love this car. I recently sold my 2007 Audi S4 V8 manual transmission auto and replaced it with this SS, and I have no regrets. Even after driving over 11,000 miles in 7 months, I still get excited every time I fire up the V8. It not only sounds great but also lives up to the sound with its performance. I'm now looking forward to replacing the Bridgestone tires with Michelin PS4s. However, I must mention that with 38,000 miles, my car has had some issues with the oil pump. The first one failed, and the dealer (whom I did not buy the car from because they didn't have and couldn't get one) took 11 days to diagnose and repair. Luckily, the car was under warranty for the first three replacements, and the fourth one seems to be holding up well. Apart from this issue, the car has been incredibly reliable. The Michelin PS 4s are absolutely phenomenal, providing 23000 miles of use compared to the stock tires' 15000 miles. Although they need replacing now, I still get the same great feeling every time I start the car and hear the wonderful V8 rumble to life. The fun factor is amazing, and I often get looks and questions about the car. People often mistake it for an Impala or Malibu, as they have never heard of it. The rarity of this car, especially with the 6-speed manual transmission, is also very appealing to me. I absolutely love this car!

Congratulations on owning a 2015 SS! It's amazing that you've driven 35,000 miles without any trouble. Chevy/Holden did an excellent job creating this car. You mentioned that you believe you would have to go to Germany to find something comparable to the SS, but maybe a Cadillac could come close. The SS has held its value well, unlike some German cars. It's clear that you love your car and it's easy to see why. The SS is a comfortable, high-performance, rear-wheel-drive sedan that's perfect for families. The BMW5 is a great car, but the SS can hold its own against it. The seats are comfortable and spacious, and the car is fun to drive. The brakes are outstanding, and the heads-up display and magnetic ride control are great features. It's clear that you have a real passion for your car. If you're looking for a car with great gas mileage, you may need to look elsewhere, but if you want a car that's fun to drive and has great performance, the SS is the perfect choice. It's a shame that this car has been discontinued, but it's clear that you'll be enjoying your SS for many years to come.

Update: After nearly 7 years and 63,500 miles of ownership, I still smile every time I hit the start button and the LS3 comes to life. The exhaust note in Sport, Performance or Track mode opens the baffles in the exhaust for a great sound without being obnoxious. It's also nice to flip to touring to quiet it down a little and smooth out the bumps when cruising on the interstate. I love the handling, acceleration, engine/exhaust rumble, subtle styling that doesn’t scream sports car, versatility of having a large trunk and 4-doors, and owning a car that you rarely see on the road. However, there are a few downsides to consider. For instance, there is no Homelink, so you are stuck with a clunky garage door opener remote. Additionally, the 6-speed automatic is very dated, and overall not very responsive to the 415 hp and 415 lb/ft of torque begging to come out and play. The Magnetic ride shocks are great but also are known to fail when the seals begin to leak - I’ve replaced both rear shocks and about to replace both fronts after barely 60k miles. Lastly, since production ended with the 2017 model year and the Holden plant in Australia closed permanently, parts are increasingly harder to obtain. Overall, finding this car with a 20% GM discount tag in 2016 made it the best performance sedan for the money, and one of the few rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated V8's left. The fuel economy is terrible, but no one could realistically expect different. A huge plus is that the car has held its value. As of May 2023, I have a trade-in offer for $3,500 less than what I paid new (before tax, title, license).

Hey there! I can see that you really enjoyed the performance and loaded options of the Chevy SS. However, I understand that the price of 50k for a souped up Malibu just doesn't seem worth it to you.

The front tires of this car need to be replaced every 13,000 miles due to abnormal wear. Despite having the alignment checked at two Chevy dealers, who confirmed it is within specifications, the poor tire wear remains unexplained and there is no warranty. To keep the front tires in good condition, a budget of 0.06 cents per mile is necessary. Additionally, the heating and AC are excessively noisy, which is a concern. However, it is important to note that this car has always been driven conservatively, like a family car.
