2018 Bmw M4 problems
The BMW M4 is a version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Upgrades over the standard BMW 4 Series include an upgraded engine, suspension, exhaust system, brakes and weight reduction measures including increased use of carbon fibre, such as on the roof of the car.
First generation (F82/F83; 2014)
On 25 September 2013, BMW released the technical specifications of the M4. It is powered by the S55B30 engine, which is developed and engineered by BMW M GmbH. This 3.0-litre inline-6 engine has been built specifically for the new M4/M3, having a redline of 7,600 rpm with the rev limiter actuated at 7,300 rpm. The engine uses two mono-scroll turbochargers with a peak boost pressure of 18.1 psi (1.2 bar). The power is rated at 317 kW (431 PS; 425 hp), however this is achieved not at a specific engine speed, but is instead rated throughout the range of 5,500–7,300 rpm. The engine's torque is rated at 550 N⋅m (406 lbf⋅ft) throughout the range of 1,850–5,500. Two transmission choices are available, the 6-speed manual and the 7-speed M-DCT transmissions. The 7-speed M-DCT transmission accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds) and the 6-speed manual transmission from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds. The weight of the European specification M4 equipped with a manual transmission is 1,572 kg (3,466 lb) and with the M-DCT dual-clutch transmission, the car is some 40 kg (88 lb) heavier, losing some 80 kg (176 lb) as compared to the E92 M3.
As per its E92 predecessor, the roof of the coupe model is constructed from carbon fibre (except if the optional sunroof is fitted). Carbon fibre is also used for the bootlid and engine brace. For the first time in a M3/M4 model, an electric power steering unit is used. The steering system is specifically tuned for both the M3 and M4, however it has been criticised for lacking in feel. The 18 inches (460 mm) and 19 inches (480 mm) wheel options are available with lightweight forged alloy wheels being standard. The M compound brakes come standard (with blue brake calipers), while carbon ceramic brakes (with gold brake calipers) are available as an option.
The M4 features Active Sound, live amplification of the engine's natural sound inducted into the passenger cabin via speakers in the car. BMW claims this technology has been used so that the well insulated cabin can reduce road/wind noise but still provide the driver with the sporty sound of the M powered engine. There are no artificial sound or any pre-recorded track in the system. This system was first implemented in the M5 (F10).
The M4 is based on the F32 4 Series however 50 percent of its components are unique as compared to the 4 Series.
The convertible variant of the M4 was announced along with its coupe sibling, also internally known as F82 or F83 M4. It shares almost everything with the coupé version, but weighs more due to its folding metal roof. The convertible weighs 1,750 kg (3,858 lb) (manual), 1,691 kg (3,728 lb) (M-DCT). The three-piece retractable hardtop folds in 20 seconds. The only significant difference between the two is the weight due to its retractable hardtop. Like its hardtop counterpart, the F83 M4 uses carbon fibre reinforced plastic to lighten and stiffen the car.
Because of its extra weight it accelerates slower, taking it 0.3 seconds longer to 100 km/h (62 mph); 4.6 seconds with the manual and 4.3 seconds with the M-DCT transmission. The dynamic differences between the two variants are marginally small.
Starting from the 2019 model year (production from 07/2018 onward) BMW removed the carbon fibre driveshaft so as to be able to fit an Otto Particulate Filter (OPF), necessary to comply with WLTP emissions regulations and this also meant that the M Performance Exhaust was no longer able to be offered on these cars by BMW.

In terms of recalls, the standard 4 Series has experienced issues with a possible faulty retracting seatbelt mechanism, potential power steering problems, and a faulty fuel pump. However, most of these recalls affected lesser-engined models. The M4, as a high-performance variant, may not have been affected by these specific recalls.
When buying a used BMW M4, it is essential to check for any signs of misuse or abuse, examine the bodywork, underside, alloy wheels, and exhaust for any issues. Uneven tire wear could indicate misaligned wheels, and it is recommended to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle if there are any concerns.

- Summary: The fuel tank was leaking a substantial amount of fuel. Yes it is. Our safety was put at risk due to the fuel leak. Any small spark, overheating or if somebody threw a cigarette butt out of their window could have ignited our car. BMW informed me to immediately cease driving the car and bring to the dealership right away. Problem was confirmed by dealership as stated on the attached invoice. No, no warning or indicator lights were present.

- Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Fuel Tank on my BMW under 50k miles started leaking after a fill up. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I didn't notice any leaks at the gas station but once I got home, pulled in my garage I noticed the smell of fuel, figured I just spilled a bit. I left my car to go get ready, once I came back the garage was filled with gas fumes. I looked under the car and saw a decently large puddle under the driver side. I live in Texas where it was quite warm that day. I could've easily caught fire and cause harm to myself and so many others. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I had it towed immediately the next day to a BMW dealership, and they stated the seams of the fuel tank are leaking. How is that possible, that's a manufacturing issue. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Only the BMW dealership, they won't have anyone else look at it. Slapped me with a $3,489 repair estimate, and that's it. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? There were literally no lamps, alerts, lights or indicator to tell me something was wrong. The car could've exploded on me. I still have the federal emissions warranty active and they are saying it doesn't cover a fuel tank.

- Summary: Fuel tank was leaking. I brought it in to BMW of San Antonio who found the left side top area of fuel tank leaking fuel from the sealed portion. Heat caused the top of fuel tank to expand and crack. BMW of SA required me to buy a replacement fuel tank. When I said, if I buy the replacement fuel tank, won't this issue keep reoccurring every time it gets hot. The tech advised that BMW was aware of the problem and designed the replacement fuel tanks differently, so that the fuel tanks won't expand and crack in the same manner. I advised BMW of North America requesting they pay for the replacement, that this should have been a recall issue due to the dangers of this problem (other BMW vehicles with this defectively designed fuel tank could leak, cause fire, injury, or death), and BMW should not be waiting and hoping that no one reports the problem or only replacing the fuel tank once someone has a fuel leak and the possibility of severe injury and death. BMW explained that only NHTSA can issue recalls and BMW won't do anything proactively despite knowledge of the fuel tank design defect resutling in fuel leaks. There were no warnings - only the strong smell of gas while driving.

- Summary: I think the fuel tank has cracked on the upper portion of the tank. I noticed a smell of gas on my way home from filling gas and when I got home I realized there was a puddle of gas sitting underneath my car. I jacked up the car and inspected the underneath and saw nothing, I noticed the gas was leaking from a higher spot, somewhere I couldnt see. Ive read on forums that its happened before to a few other people and someone personal that I know. Yes the car can be inspected upon request. Safety is put at risk because the gar is leaving right next to the exhaust, which can easily catch fire to the car, myself, and other drivers on the road. I was getting a misfire on my car and realized the engine wasnt getting enough fuel, on my way home from filling gas I got a check engine light and a notification in my car saying “drivetrain malfunction”

- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive, and M4 convertible vehicles. The Emergency Locking Retractors (ELR) within the front seat belt assemblies may have been produced with incompatible vehicle-sensitive locking mechanism housings.
- Consequence: If the vehicle has an incompatible vehicle-sensitive locking mechanism, the seat belt may not restrain the seat occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary replace, the front seat belt assemblies, free of charge. The recall began October 13, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

I previously owned a 2009 M3 and got rid of it after only a month. However, I have to say that the new M4 is a completely different beast. It's a ROCKET and has beautiful, aggressive styling. I absolutely LOVE driving this thing. Its mid-range torque is other-worldly and I would compare it to the feeling of driving a 911 Turbo. Having owned Porsches, Ferraris, and AMGs, I think this is the best performance car you can buy under $100K.

This high performance sports coupe is a real beauty, with a powerful engine that handles extremely well. While the advertised HP is 425, it's probably closer to 500. It's also been a very reliable machine so far. While it does have a high depreciation rate and less than stellar exhaust note, most car enthusiasts will not be disappointed with this track marvel and daily driver.

I am currently driving the 2015 model. Although I have had some challenges with it, I have learned to adapt. Some professional reviewers have noted that the engine can be quite loud, but I have found ways to manage it. The shifter can be a bit slow when changing between forward and reverse, but with some patience, it is manageable. The navigation system is not as advanced as Google Maps, but it still serves its purpose. I have noticed that the backup camera has some limitations, particularly in low light conditions, but it is still helpful. One thing to note is that the car cannot be locked when parked in Neutral, which can be inconvenient at times. Overall, I have learned to work with the car's quirks and have found it to be a reliable mode of transportation.

The engine compartment is quite tight, which generates a lot of heat. Unfortunately, this is not good for electrical, plastic, and rubber parts, making it harder to trace vacuum, coolant, or oil leaks. This can end up costing owners a lot of money. Additionally, the interior cabin can be quite noisy, and the lettering or logo is too small to read easily. It can be a bit confusing to navigate the entertainment display, and it's important to be careful not to spill food or drink near the buttons next to the transmission shifter. Changing headlight bulbs can also be a bit tricky. Unfortunately, after only 35,655 miles, there was an oil leak at the turbo, which was expensive to repair. The warranty only covers 4 years, which is disappointing given the quality of the parts. There were also several error codes, including check engine, cas system, headlight, alarm, and zgm codes, which cost $8756.00 to repair. Despite these issues, we hope that you will still enjoy your car!

The door handles require an extra pull to get in or out of the car, which can be inconvenient. Additionally, the door unlock button is located in the center of the dash, which may not be the most user-friendly design. The automatic transmission can also be difficult to shift into park, especially for new drivers. It's important to note that the paddle shifters can be easily activated when shifting into drive. These factors have made it challenging for my wife to drive the car. Furthermore, I found the garage door opener to be difficult to set up, despite having experience with American cars. Lastly, the electronics and command center console could be more user-friendly. While I appreciate the engineering of German cars, I may consider purchasing an American car in the future due to their user-friendly design.
