buick logo

The Buick Encore is a subcompact crossover SUV built by General Motors from 2012 to 2022. It is subcompact crossover SUV marketed by Buick and its fourth SUV overall after the Rendezvous, Rainier, and Enclave.

The "Encore" designation was previously used by American Motors Corporation (AMC) for the subcompact two and four-door hatchback variants of the U.S.-built front-wheel drive Renault Alliance from 1984 to 1987.

First generation (2013)

The first-generation Encore is a restyled first-generation Chevrolet Trax, and shares the same styling with the European Opel/Vauxhall Mokka. It debuted at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 10, 2012, and went on sale at the end of 2012. The North American Encore is assembled at the GM Korea plant in Bupyeong, South Korea alongside the Trax. The Chinese market Encore is assembled in Shandong.

The 2013, 2014 and 2015 Encore in the U.S. was offered in Base, Convenience, Leather, and Premium level models with the A14NET 1.4-liter inline-four multi-port fuel injected (MFI) VVT turbo gasoline engine rated at 128 hp (95 kW; 130 PS) @ 4900 rpm coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It was available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions.

For 2016, a new Sport Touring second tier model was added which included an 18-inch alloy wheels with midnight silver finish, rear spoiler, body-color door handles, remote start, fog lights, and a new more powerful B14XFT Ecotec inline four-cylinder direct fuel injection VVT engine rated at 153 hp (114 kW; 155 PS) @ 5600 rpm in Encore marketing materials. However, Opel in Europe rates the engine for the Mokka at 150 hp (112 kW; 152 PS) @ 4900–6000 rpm.

The Ecotec direct-injection engine package includes Stop/Start technology to improve fuel economy and was made available as an option on all but the base model for 2017 and 2018. In 2017, the model levels became Base, Preferred, Sport Touring, Preferred II, Essence, and Premium.

Common 2021 Buick Encore problems

The Buick Encore, a subcompact SUV, is generally considered reliable, but there are several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, particularly for the 2017 model year.

Engine issues are prevalent in the Buick Encore, and the 2017 model year has been particularly affected. Reports indicate that engine problems began to surface at relatively low mileage, around 11,000 miles or more. These issues have led to accidents and injuries in some cases.

Faulty airbags and seatbelts are another concern for the Buick Encore, particularly for the 2015-2017 model years. GM recalled over 3.6 million vehicles, including the Encore, due to defective airbags and seatbelts that prevented frontal airbags and seatbelt pretensioners from activating during collisions.

Brake issues are also common in the Buick Encore. Owners have reported hearing noises while braking, experiencing weak and ineffective brakes, and encountering excessive vibrations and loss of control due to brake problems. These issues can be dangerous and require immediate attention.

Faulty batteries are a problem for the 2014 Buick Encore, with some drivers reporting that they had to replace their batteries every four to six weeks. This issue can be frustrating and costly, as a replacement battery may be necessary frequently.

The windshield of the Buick Encore is also prone to cracking easily, with several owners reporting this problem at relatively low mileage. Replacing the windshield can be expensive, adding to the overall cost of ownership.

For the 2021 Buick Encore, common problems include dead batteries, excessive suspension noise, and stereo system issues. Dead batteries are the most widespread complaint, with some owners reporting this problem within the first 5,000 miles. Excessive suspension noise is usually caused by worn-out bushings and can cost around $200 to fix, while stereo system issues can be resolved with software updates available at dealerships.

It is worth noting that there are no recalls on the 2021 Buick Encore, which is a positive aspect of this model year. However, regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other small SUVs, around $426 per year.

In summary, potential buyers of the Buick Encore should be aware of engine issues, faulty airbags and seatbelts, brake problems, faulty batteries, and easily cracked windshields, particularly for the 2013-2017 model years. For the 2021 Buick Encore, common problems include dead batteries, excessive suspension noise, and stereo system issues. Regular maintenance costs are similar to other small SUVs, and there are no recalls on the 2021 model year.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
  • VIN: KL4CJESMXMB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The 2021 Buick Encore was listed by the NHTSA as having a parts recall with the Evaporative Emission Purge Pump, yet when I look up my VIN and talk to the dealer, I’m told the vehicle is not recalled, even though I’m having the exact same issue that was described in the recall. I’ve been delaying servicing because I was told the part was on back order but now they have it in stock and I’m hoping I don’t have to pay for it since my issue is the same one that was listed in the recall.

Changed upstream O2 sensor, changed wastegate solenoid, turbo seems to be working fine, no noises, but losing power going up hills at highway speeds. Negative 2021 Buick Encore car reviews

  1. Mohamed Daugherty 2024-11-01

Five months ago, we hit a deer which caused the driver's side seat belt to malfunction. Despite our repeated attempts, GMC has been unable to provide us with a replacement seat belt and has not given us any indication of when one will become available. As a result, the dealership has refused to release the car due to safety concerns. Despite our long-standing loyalty to GMC, we have been disappointed by their lack of action in resolving this issue, and we are now considering other options for our future automotive needs.

Love the Apple Car play and safety features! It's such a comfortable car for freeway miles, although the gas mileage and power could be better. Unfortunately, I had to replace the air compressor at 40,000 miles, which wasn't covered under warranty, and the Turbo Charger went out at 50,000. Currently, the check engine light is on with a slow loss of EVAP system. I'm a bit disappointed with the GM warranty and the dealerships, but I'm hopeful that we can resolve these issues. This is my first American car, and I'm hoping it won't be my last!

I recently had an opportunity to drive the Encore as a dealer loaner while my car was getting repaired. During the 4 days, I drove over 500 miles and unfortunately, I did not enjoy the experience. The seats felt cramped and there was very little legroom for both the driver and passenger. Additionally, the engine felt underpowered and the car felt sluggish on the highway, which made me feel a bit uneasy when changing lanes. The interior felt a bit cheap and the seats were not very comfortable. Although I have been a Buick owner for years, I would not consider purchasing the Encore. However, I do have a friend who recently purchased a brand new Jeep Compass and for the money, I would strongly recommend considering one of those instead of an Encore.

I had the chance to drive an Encore as a rental while my car was being repaired after an accident. At first, I was excited to see them on the road, thinking they were cute and possibly fun. When the rental company offered me one, I couldn't resist. The front of the car seemed luxurious, but upon closer inspection, the interior was made of cheap plastic on the dash and doors. However, I did enjoy the big touch screen and the features it came with. The front seats were a bit narrow, but manageable. One day, while packing my things in the back to go to work, I sat in the back to sort them so they wouldn't fall over. Unfortunately, it was very cramped back there, and I felt claustrophobic, even though I'm a little short person. The materials in the back were even cheaper than in the front. I wouldn't want to ride back there on a long trip. The trunk was also very tiny. I ended up driving all day one of the days while I had it because I had to go see clients, and it was quite uncomfortable. In my opinion, this car is not worth the price they charge for it. Keep in mind that I'm a short and little person, and I still felt cramped. Overall, I was not impressed and was glad to get my car back. This car is cheaply made and not as luxurious or fine as advertised.

With only 15,100 miles, I experienced an issue while merging onto the freeway at 60 mph. The check engine light went on and the car seemed to lose a lot of power. I immediately took it to the Buick dealer and was informed that it was a turbocharger failure. The service advisor told me that this was a known issue with the Encore. Although they had already rebuilt the turbocharger once, the exact same issue occurred again after just one week. I hope that they will do a better job this time!

Smooth ride, all the tech options you need, cute car, great value for the money. Love it!

  2. Berta Von 2024-11-07

A few years ago, my friend got one and I took a 2-hour drive in the back seat (I'm 5'8). Surprisingly, I found it very comfortable and the ride was smooth and quiet. Three weeks ago, I decided to purchase this vehicle because I got tired of driving my big SUV around town. I find it very fun to drive and the cargo area, although small, is big enough for a week's worth of groceries. As an animal rescuer, I do need a bit of space, but when I fold the seats down, I have plenty of room. Even the passenger front seat folds flat if I'm driving solo. I bought the Essence model and I absolutely love all the bells & whistles. The car is very comfortable and easy to zip in and out of traffic and tight parking spots. The sound system is great too. So far, I am loving this car!

Update August 22, 2022: I wanted to share some feedback on my experience with this vehicle. While there were some minor reliability issues, such as the information display resetting at one point and the right horn stopping working at 49,000 miles, overall I found the Encore to be a decent car. The LED interior lights did begin to fail, but that was a minor issue. The only thing that really bothered me was the remote fob, which had a raised alarm button that could be triggered with the slightest touch. No matter where I put it on my body, eventually the horn would start beeping. Despite this annoyance, I still appreciated the quietness of the car due to active noise cancellation and the adequate acceleration provided by the turbocharged engine. The interior has also had a significant upgrade since the 2014 model, with improved controls that are generally intuitive. While I did find the steering wheel controls for cruise control and sound system to be less intuitive than those on a Honda, the sound system itself is very good. The climate controls are well thought out and the driver display is well laid out. Overall, I would recommend the Encore to others looking for a decent car with a comfortable interior.Having individual temperature controls for both the driver and passenger is incredibly useful, and the heated seats with three levels are a nice touch. However, my absolute favorite feature in cold weather is the heated steering wheel. While the handling, steering, and brakes are good, they don't feel quite as precise as a Honda HR-V. That being said, the front seats are very comfortable and supportive, making the Encore a pleasure to drive on long trips. The ride is smooth and the cabin is quiet, which is impressive for a small car. Although I was hoping for the optional 153 hp engine, it's hard to find on the used market, but the base engine provides adequate power. The gas mileage is slightly disappointing, especially in city driving, where it's hard to get better than 25 mpg. The city-highway combined is averaging ~31 mpg, which is about 10% worse than a Honda HR-V. The collision/proximity warning system is excellent. However, there are a few areas where the Encore falls short for a $30,000 car, such as the lack of USB power outlets for rear seat passengers and no power-assisted hatch. Additionally, it's inexcusable that GM charges more than $149.99+$3.95 shipping to update the map software. In a vehicle of this class, lifetime map updates should be standard. Instead of being ripped off by GM, I will use Android Auto when I need up-to-date travel data. UPDATE: Unfortunately, the VVT solenoid failed at ~48,000 miles, and repairs cost around $200. However, I have since sold the Encore on January 31, 2023, and replaced it with a 2023 Kia Niro, which outclasses the Encore in every possible area.

  4. Jessie Hauck 2024-10-16

Riding in the Encore is a beautiful and luxurious experience. As a shorter person, I appreciate not having to climb into it, and my husband, who has had multiple back surgeries, finds it easy to slide right in. The seating is comfortable for both of us, and we both have great visibility. The Encore is also great on fuel, which is a bonus. We both love the versatility of the back seat, which can be adjusted to a flat surface when we need additional room. Additionally, the front passenger seat can be folded flat. While the mirror adjustment controls serve their purpose and work fine, we do think that Buick could improve their appearance to match the rest of the vehicle. The bright headlights have a LED combination that lights up remote country roads, and they look beautiful even when they're not on. The body design is both beautiful and classy. Overall, we absolutely love our Encore!

  5. Kameron Mitchell 2024-10-01

The car has some great features such as a pretty design, nice colours, and a reasonable price of 20k. However, the set of tires can be a bit noisy and the steering is extremely sensitive at 65. It took a lot of seat and steering adjustments to get the view of the instruments and road right, and the steering wheel then blocked the view of the speedometer. Although there were some not-so-nice aspects, I did appreciate the seat height. However, I personally am not a fan of subcompact cars.
