The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Dodge brand for model years 2009 to 2020 over a single generation, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. The Journey was styled by Ryan Nagode, and was marketed globally in both left- and right-hand drive, including as the Fiat Freemont.

Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.

Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common 2018 Dodge Journey problems

The 2018 Dodge Journey has some common problems that owners have reported. These issues include transmission slipping, rearview camera malfunctions, and Bluetooth connectivity problems.

Transmission slipping is a widespread complaint among 2018 Dodge Journey owners. This issue usually occurs around 60,000 miles and is caused by a transmission software problem. The fix for this issue typically costs around $150. However, in rare cases, damage to the transmission internals may occur, which can cost over $1,500 to rebuild.

Another common problem with the 2018 Dodge Journey is the rearview camera not working. This issue is reported within the first 10,000 miles and can be resolved with software updates for the stereo system. Dealerships usually install these updates for free, while some may charge around $50 for labor.

Bluetooth connectivity issues have also been reported by 2018 Journey owners at around 1,000 miles. This is another software problem that Dodge has released updates for. Most dealerships will install the latest version of the infotainment software for free, while others charge around $50.

In addition to these issues, there are six recalls on the 2018 Dodge Journey, including a voltage regulator recall that can cause the SUV to stall and a rear brake caliper piston coating recall. Dodge will replace the powertrain control module on affected models for free for the voltage regulator recall, and the rear brake caliper piston coating recall will also be fixed for free.

The 2018 Dodge Journey offers two engine options: a 4-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 173 horsepower and a 6-liter V6 engine that produces 283 horsepower. The 4-cylinder engine comes with a four-speed automatic transmission, while the V6 engine has a six-speed automatic transmission. The Journey provides seating for up to seven passengers across three rows, with limited legroom in the third row. The ride quality is decent, with the suspension absorbing most minor road imperfections, but some critics have mentioned that it might feel somewhat firm over more substantial bumps.

Overall, the 2018 Dodge Journey offers acceptable comfort for its class, but those seeking a more luxurious feel may want to explore other options. The Journey lasts around 200,000 miles, with some transmission software and rearview camera issues reported. At $13,150 to $25,990, it’s cheaper than many other midsize SUVs in its class.

  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: While care was parked, daughter (11yo) leaned around passenger seat with her forearm against the left side of the head rest to talk to her mother. Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

Negative 2018 Dodge Journey car reviews

  1. Jackson Hyatt 2024-11-03

Although I have had some issues with my car, I have taken care of them promptly and efficiently. Over the past 3 years, I have had to replace the transmission, radiator, and hub assembly, and I have also experienced some ABS issues. However, I have been proactive in addressing these problems. I have also replaced the tires that came with the car, as they were not up to my standards. While I have experienced some phantom beeps, I have been able to resolve any issues that have arisen. Currently, my check engine light and airbag light come on intermittently, but I am confident that I will be able to address these issues as well. Overall, I am satisfied with my car and have taken good care of it.

  2. Javon Price 2024-09-08

Not got good ratings, but it does the job it was bought for. I had a Ford Escape before, and I noticed no difference in performance or consumption. The car is very basic, with no Bluetooth or even overtaking mirrors. However, I'm happy enough with what I got for the money and trade-in.

  3. Janick McCullough 2024-08-04

The vehicle shakes heavily at around 70mph, even though it was bought used and still under warranty. Despite taking it to a local Dodge dealer, they failed to diagnose the issue and only suggested balancing the tires. After replacing all four tires and rotating them, the issue persisted. Upon returning to the dealer, it was discovered that the front caliper was frozen and not releasing, and the rear wheel bearing was bad. Although the warranty had expired, the issue was promptly diagnosed and repaired for $1,700. While disappointed with Dodge, as none of these parts should have worn out at 29,000 miles, I have had a positive experience with my 2012 Journey SXT. However, I would advise against purchasing the 2017 GT AWD and consider other manufacturers instead.

  4. Ed Kiehn 2024-06-16

I have been driving this car as a rental for over a month. The cabin is quiet and the seats are comfortable. Although, I have experienced some issues with the acceleration, gas mileage and transmission, which can be a bit sluggish and not shift smoothly between gears. Additionally, the brake and gas pedals are positioned quite high, which has caused some discomfort in my right ankle. Unfortunately, the radio stations do not tune well, but I have found a solution by plugging in my phone. However, this means I cannot talk on the phone while driving. Overall, while I would not personally buy this car, it has some positive features and can be a good option for some drivers. I am looking forward to turning it in and getting my car back.

  5. Godfrey Harber 2024-06-05

I purchased an all-wheel-drive Crossroad brand new in January 2017. Unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with it since then. The dash had a clip break, and the transmission has been leaking. Although the dealership initially denied the leak, we were able to provide pictures to prove it. Additionally, a wheel sensor has gone out. All of these issues occurred within 9 months of owning the vehicle. While it is covered under warranty, I am still paying for a vehicle that I cannot drive due to fear of further issues. As a parent, I am concerned about the safety of my children in this vehicle. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this vehicle to others.

Positive 2018 Dodge Journey car reviews

  1. Xander Abbott 2025-01-04

I love how Dodge has kept the style of this model consistent since its release. The car still looks great! Moving from a base model Sorento to the Crossroad version was a huge upgrade for us. If you're considering a Journey, I highly recommend the Crossroad edition. We tested the SE and SXT models and they don't compare. Additionally, I suggest opting for the V6 with all-wheel drive, especially if you live in an area with regular snow and ice. It handles beautifully. The only downside we've experienced so far is the low gas mileage, which is around 17 mpg in town. However, given all the other positives, it's a trade-off I'm willing to make.

  2. Myrl Bergstrom 2025-01-04

My wife suffers from collapsed disks in her back, which causes her a lot of pain. Despite being only 32 years old, she experiences back pain that is usually associated with people much older than her. Driving a car was particularly painful for her, as the seats were too close to the floor. However, on Valentine's Day 2019, we decided to trade our 2011 Camry XLE for a new 2018 Dodge Journey. Although the Camry's V6 engine was much faster than the 2.4 world engine in the Journey, we were familiar with the latter from our previous experience with Kia and Hyundai vehicles. The 0-60 time of 9.5 seconds may not be the fastest by 2019 standards, but it is more than enough for the rural area of Ohio where we live. Our Journey is a left-over 2018 model, and it is a base SE with the backup camera, blacktop package, and Bluetooth/Satellite and Leather Steering wheel package. Despite being a base model, it has a lot of features that make it a great car. The car's price was just $18,500, thanks to all the rebates we received from FCA and Ganley Motors in London, OH. We have only had the car for a month, but we are impressed with its performance. The interior quality is decent, and the engine noise is well subdued, except when accelerating. The 4-speed is ancient, but the torque converter is pretty high stall, which allows the engine to rev fairly freely to make the most of its modest output. The car is black, and with the tinted windows and blacktop package, it looks much more expensive than it actually is. The seating angle is higher than our old Camry, which is a huge relief for my wife, who drives all over the state for her job. Although the fuel economy could be better, 22-23mpg combined isn't too bad either.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned you have a Dodge Journey RT for two years now. It's great to hear that you're enjoying the heated seats! However, I understand that you're experiencing some trouble with the gas mileage. Have you considered taking it to a mechanic to see if there's anything that can be done to improve it? The V-6 engine is supposed to get around 17 miles per gallon in the city, so it's definitely worth looking into. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns!

Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that unfortunately, the navigation feature is only available in the upper models. Even if you purchased the 8.4 screen, you won't be able to add the Nav option. I hope this information helps!

This is actually the second V6 Journey I've purchased. I had a previous G/TG and regretted selling it when I did. My wife and I wanted something different, so we looked back at a Journey Crossroads Plus. It's a super SUV with a wonderful leather interior, very well designed and looks terrific. It gets great gas mileage, my wife averages around 25 most of the time. It's a great riding and driving SUV. I'm so glad we went back to one. It's a wonderful vehicle that deserves more attention from the auto buffs.
