Chevrolet S10 problems

The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.
In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.
The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common Chevrolet S10 problems
The Chevrolet S10, a compact pickup truck, has been celebrated for its versatility and durability. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems and complaints from owners. This article will explore some of these issues, focusing on the second generation of the Chevy S10, produced between 1994 and 2004.
- Faulty Heater Core: The heater core is a crucial component of the vehicle's heating system. When it malfunctions, it can cause symptoms such as coolant leaks, reduced heat output, or even engine overheating. The heater core is located in the dashboard, and repairing it often requires the removal of the upper engine parts like fuel lines and the A/C compressor.
- Distributor Problems: The distributor is responsible for distributing the high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the correct order. Common problems with the distributor on the Chevy S10 include a bad distributor cap and rotor or worn internal parts. Symptoms of distributor problems may include engine misfires, the engine turning over but not starting, or a check engine light for misfire codes P0300-P0306.
- Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant issue for the second generation of the Chevy S10. It can result in symptoms such as transmission slipping, difficulty shifting gears, or complete transmission failure. The most reported problem in this category is transmission failure in the 2002 S-10 Pickup, with an average cost to fix of $1,400 and an average mileage of 58,000 mi.
- Fuel System Issues: Fuel system issues are another common problem for the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues can range from fuel tank cracks at the inlet tube connection point, which can lead to fuel leaks and gas fumes, to malfunctioning fuel level sensors, which can cause erratic fuel gauge readings. Fuel system issues not only pose safety and environmental concerns but can also impact the vehicle's overall performance and fuel efficiency.
- Electrical System Malfunctions: Electrical system malfunctions, such as headlights and horns activating unexpectedly, are a common complaint among owners of the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues are often attributed to a malfunctioning body control module or faulty wiring and can pose an inconvenience and potentially lead to more significant repairs if not addressed promptly.
- Suspension and Steering Complaints: Suspension and steering complaints, such as premature wear of suspension components or steering difficulties, are another common issue for the second generation of the Chevy S10. Regular checks and timely component replacements are recommended to maintain the truck's performance and safety.
- Structural Integrity Issues: Structural integrity issues, such as liftgate collapse due to fractured tailgate cables, have been reported for the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues not only pose a risk of injury but also highlight the importance of regular vehicle inspections and adherence to recall notices when applicable.
- Equipment Failures: Equipment failures, such as parking brake malfunctions or service brake system warnings, can compromise vehicle safety and require immediate attention from certified professionals to ensure the proper functioning of these vital systems.
In conclusion, the second generation of the Chevy S10, while celebrated for its versatility and durability, has its share of common problems and complaints from owners. Recognizing these issues is crucial for current and prospective owners aiming to make informed decisions regarding maintenance, repairs, and overall vehicle care. By staying informed and addressing these issues promptly, owners can ensure their Chevy S10 continues to serve them well for years to come.
Why did Chevy stop making s10s?
Chevrolet discontinued the S10 pickup truck in 2004. This was 22 years after its first launch in 1982. It was replaced largely for the same reason that a lot of modern vehicles are: fluctuating trends of the ever-changing automotive industry and changing consumer demands.

I have owned my S-10 Crew cab for 3 month now, and have taken it from the outer beaches of Long Island up to Plattsburgh where I now live. It is a happy median between a fast car and an off road vehicle. Meaning while the suspesion is great, it lacks ground clearance. But being lower to the ground makes it hand real well when cruising at 80-90mph on the highway. Chevy is coming out with the Colorado next year which seems to be a nice truck, look at the specs. S-10 has more torque has the proven 4.3 v6 which was used in Syclone in the early 90s. Where is the improvement? .

I've driven this truck through some of the toughest terrains and it has never let me down. It has beaten every Chevy, Dodge, and Ford full-size pickup I've come across. Even after being stolen and damaged, it still ran for a month. This truck is perfect for anyone looking for a reliable, powerful, and versatile vehicle for hauling and off-roading. The only downside is that the seats in the short cab can be a bit uncomfortable for people taller than 5'8

252,000 and counting. It's never left me stranded. The bed holds a 4wheeler with room to spare. I couldn't even get the gate closed on my old Tacoma. Although the MPG's are down to 21 and power is also down compared to when I got it at 200k, I will still drive it as long as it runs.

I drive a 1995 Chevrolet S10 Extended Cab LS 4.3 Vortec and I absolutely love it! It runs smoothly, handles well, and performs at a 5-star level. I make sure to maintain regular oil changes at around 4000 miles and have added a Spectre cold air intake and a Flowmaster Super 44 muffler for an even better driving experience. The straight pipe exhaust sounds great and the truck is quick, although the gas mileage isn't the best. The exterior is black and white with a tan interior, and the engine is clean with no cracks on the interior. There is some minor rust, but it was an easy fix. Overall, I highly recommend this truck to anyone looking for a fun and reliable ride!

This is my first Crew Cab, but my fourth S-10. I really enjoy the ride and drive of this truck. It's a shame to see it go.

I have driven this vehicle throughout Germany and I absolutely love it! It has been incredibly reliable, with only a few minor issues. Unfortunately, the recline handles on both seats broke before 30000 miles due to substandard metal used where they screw onto. Additionally, the truck tends to slide easily and the traction is not great, despite the tires. However, after 140,000 miles, I still don't burn oil thanks to my religious maintenance schedule. The brakes tend to wear out quickly on the front and the rotors warp easily, but this seems to be a common issue with all GMs. I adore the timeless body style and the 4.3 engine is fantastic, although I do wish the plastic coolant outlet valve on the radiator was better quality. Overall, this truck has been incredibly reliable and has served me well. The only downside is the wind noise, but that's a small price to pay for such a great vehicle!

Hello! I just wanted to share my experience with Chevrolet. Although I have always been a fan of their cars, I have unfortunately had some issues with my Chevy truck. I've had problems with the brakes, rear end, and most recently, the drive line. It's been difficult to find a drive line shop that will repair it with a warranty due to an engineering problem. Despite these challenges, I still appreciate Chevrolet and their cars. I hope to see improvements in the future so that I can confidently purchase a Camaro when it comes out. Thank you for listening!

This was my second S-10. It was a great little truck! Although the interior wasn't as nice as the later models, the engine performance was good. I had no problems with the truck at all. I parked the truck because I bought another one, and decided to do something that Chevrolet won't do. I stuffed a SBC 427 and Powerglide in it. To hell with fuel mileage, let's have fun! I'm still racing her too.

Vehicle year: 1996
The 4.3 V6 models of my second s10 have a severe lack of power, which is a known issue with the 4 cylinder. However, the problem lies with the prehistoric overhead valve design that GM still uses in nearly all their vehicles, despite other manufacturers moving to overhead cam design. It is important to note that if the previous owner did not change their oil every 2000 miles or sooner, the lifters may mess up by 100,000 miles. In such cases, the only solution would be to invest $500 into the engine or buy a new one.

I've had the truck for nine years and last year I had to spend $1200 on the head gasket. Although the windshield wipers work occasionally, it still hauls loads fine. However, I do wish the mechanical systems were up to the quality of Japanese automakers.
