Chevrolet S10 problems

The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.
In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.
The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common Chevrolet S10 problems
The Chevrolet S10, a compact pickup truck, has been celebrated for its versatility and durability. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems and complaints from owners. This article will explore some of these issues, focusing on the second generation of the Chevy S10, produced between 1994 and 2004.
- Faulty Heater Core: The heater core is a crucial component of the vehicle's heating system. When it malfunctions, it can cause symptoms such as coolant leaks, reduced heat output, or even engine overheating. The heater core is located in the dashboard, and repairing it often requires the removal of the upper engine parts like fuel lines and the A/C compressor.
- Distributor Problems: The distributor is responsible for distributing the high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the correct order. Common problems with the distributor on the Chevy S10 include a bad distributor cap and rotor or worn internal parts. Symptoms of distributor problems may include engine misfires, the engine turning over but not starting, or a check engine light for misfire codes P0300-P0306.
- Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant issue for the second generation of the Chevy S10. It can result in symptoms such as transmission slipping, difficulty shifting gears, or complete transmission failure. The most reported problem in this category is transmission failure in the 2002 S-10 Pickup, with an average cost to fix of $1,400 and an average mileage of 58,000 mi.
- Fuel System Issues: Fuel system issues are another common problem for the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues can range from fuel tank cracks at the inlet tube connection point, which can lead to fuel leaks and gas fumes, to malfunctioning fuel level sensors, which can cause erratic fuel gauge readings. Fuel system issues not only pose safety and environmental concerns but can also impact the vehicle's overall performance and fuel efficiency.
- Electrical System Malfunctions: Electrical system malfunctions, such as headlights and horns activating unexpectedly, are a common complaint among owners of the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues are often attributed to a malfunctioning body control module or faulty wiring and can pose an inconvenience and potentially lead to more significant repairs if not addressed promptly.
- Suspension and Steering Complaints: Suspension and steering complaints, such as premature wear of suspension components or steering difficulties, are another common issue for the second generation of the Chevy S10. Regular checks and timely component replacements are recommended to maintain the truck's performance and safety.
- Structural Integrity Issues: Structural integrity issues, such as liftgate collapse due to fractured tailgate cables, have been reported for the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues not only pose a risk of injury but also highlight the importance of regular vehicle inspections and adherence to recall notices when applicable.
- Equipment Failures: Equipment failures, such as parking brake malfunctions or service brake system warnings, can compromise vehicle safety and require immediate attention from certified professionals to ensure the proper functioning of these vital systems.
In conclusion, the second generation of the Chevy S10, while celebrated for its versatility and durability, has its share of common problems and complaints from owners. Recognizing these issues is crucial for current and prospective owners aiming to make informed decisions regarding maintenance, repairs, and overall vehicle care. By staying informed and addressing these issues promptly, owners can ensure their Chevy S10 continues to serve them well for years to come.
Why did Chevy stop making s10s?
Chevrolet discontinued the S10 pickup truck in 2004. This was 22 years after its first launch in 1982. It was replaced largely for the same reason that a lot of modern vehicles are: fluctuating trends of the ever-changing automotive industry and changing consumer demands.

What can I say in 700 Characters?? This is a review of my ZR-2 without decals! I transferred from West Virginia to Virginia and unfortunately, my 4WD tires were swiped. However, the original dealer corrected the issue. I also had some fuel gauge problems and my right signal was constantly on, but all of these issues were fixed under warranty. We still love our truck! We have a Crew Cab with a hard tonneau and 18-19 MPG is fine for us (vs. 11-14 on 3500 Crew). We almost got the Dodge V8 (14 MPG), but couldn't justify the 5k in price! Would we buy another? YES WE WOULD! We receive one compliment per week. Who would have thought?

This truck drives and handles well. It's always ready for the next challenge, even when I push it hard like a Jeep.

Hi there! I just wanted to share how much I love my truck. I've had it for 13 years now and it's still going strong. I get offers to sell it all the time, but I just can't part with it. Recently, I put in about $4500 for some maintenance work, including a head rebuild, brakes all around, suspension parts, radiator, water pump, and fuel pump. Now it rides like a bat out of hell! Even after all these years, it's still worth the $10K I spent on it. The gas mileage varies depending on how you drive, but I usually get between 19-25 mpg. Thanks for listening to me gush about my truck!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to say that I really love my 2000 s10. It has 243,000 miles on it, but the motor is still going strong. The 4x4 works great, and it's been a lifesaver in the snow. Unfortunately, my driver's side window stopped working and there's some rust, but overall I'm still really happy with it!

I really like the crew-cab! It's a great towing vehicle. I've towed my 20 ft car hauler and 2800 lb race truck with no problems. One thing that has helped this truck with any cooling issues and power loss is to purchase a complete cooling fan system for a 98-02 Camaro or Firebird and install it. By taking the belt-driven fan clutch system off and dropping the fans in and adding an aftermarket thermostat control, I've gained several horsepower. This truck has an impressive 352,222 miles on it and it still runs well. I haven't had to do any internal work on the engine or any other major repairs besides regular maintenance. She's getting a little weak now, but I'm going to keep driving her until she dies!

The vehicle looked sporty at the dealer, but unfortunately did not perform as well on the road. In my experience, the only way to achieve good performance was with the v6 setup and manual transmission. I had the 4 with automatic and was disappointed with the performance. Additionally, the build quality was not up to par. The rotors went bad after only 20k miles, the transmission needed an overhaul after 30k, and at 56k the truck was having trouble starting. Although I was disappointed with my experience, I have since traded in the truck and purchased a Japanese vehicle. I value quality and reliability in my vehicles and have found that in Japanese brands. Thank you for considering my feedback.

I bought this truck back in May 2004 when it had 57000 miles on it. It's been almost 2 years now and I've put 98000 miles on it. I'm happy to say that I've only had to replace the starter, tires, and a radiator hose. The fuel economy is fantastic and I'm able to drive it 600 miles every other weekend through the Ozark Mountains to pick up my daughter for visitation. That's a lot of hard driving for a 4 cylinder motor, but it's still going strong and I haven't even had to replace the clutch yet. The air conditioning still works great too. I highly recommend this truck to anyone!

It's great to hear that the offroad capability of the vehicle was impressive at the start. However, it's unfortunate to hear that it started to fall apart after a month of use. It sounds like you had to spend a significant amount of money on repairs, including a new engine, rear end, seals, bearings, water pump, alternator, cooler lines, oil pump lines, and O2 sensor. Additionally, it's disappointing to hear about the moisture problem that caused water to leak into the passenger floor mats. It seems like you also had some issues with the third door and the vacuum pump. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, we appreciate your feedback.

Although I had a negative experience with this vehicle, it is important to note that every car has its own unique issues. In my case, I unfortunately experienced a series of problems such as the oil filter falling off after being rear-ended, the heater core breaking, the wheels being constantly out of alignment, and the water pump going out. While these issues were frustrating, I was able to address them and move forward. It is important to do your research and make an informed decision when purchasing a vehicle, but ultimately, unforeseen issues can arise with any car.

I have about 230,000 miles on mine. Although the transmission is starting to go on it, it has been a great little truck. I bought it for $5500 in 2006, with about 130,000 miles, and have been pretty hard on it since then, with no major repairs. I am very pleased with it!
