Chevrolet S10 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common Chevrolet S10 problems

The Chevrolet S10, a compact pickup truck, has been celebrated for its versatility and durability. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems and complaints from owners. This article will explore some of these issues, focusing on the second generation of the Chevy S10, produced between 1994 and 2004.

  • Faulty Heater Core: The heater core is a crucial component of the vehicle's heating system. When it malfunctions, it can cause symptoms such as coolant leaks, reduced heat output, or even engine overheating. The heater core is located in the dashboard, and repairing it often requires the removal of the upper engine parts like fuel lines and the A/C compressor.
  • Distributor Problems: The distributor is responsible for distributing the high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the correct order. Common problems with the distributor on the Chevy S10 include a bad distributor cap and rotor or worn internal parts. Symptoms of distributor problems may include engine misfires, the engine turning over but not starting, or a check engine light for misfire codes P0300-P0306.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant issue for the second generation of the Chevy S10. It can result in symptoms such as transmission slipping, difficulty shifting gears, or complete transmission failure. The most reported problem in this category is transmission failure in the 2002 S-10 Pickup, with an average cost to fix of $1,400 and an average mileage of 58,000 mi.
  • Fuel System Issues: Fuel system issues are another common problem for the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues can range from fuel tank cracks at the inlet tube connection point, which can lead to fuel leaks and gas fumes, to malfunctioning fuel level sensors, which can cause erratic fuel gauge readings. Fuel system issues not only pose safety and environmental concerns but can also impact the vehicle's overall performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Electrical System Malfunctions: Electrical system malfunctions, such as headlights and horns activating unexpectedly, are a common complaint among owners of the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues are often attributed to a malfunctioning body control module or faulty wiring and can pose an inconvenience and potentially lead to more significant repairs if not addressed promptly.
  • Suspension and Steering Complaints: Suspension and steering complaints, such as premature wear of suspension components or steering difficulties, are another common issue for the second generation of the Chevy S10. Regular checks and timely component replacements are recommended to maintain the truck's performance and safety.
  • Structural Integrity Issues: Structural integrity issues, such as liftgate collapse due to fractured tailgate cables, have been reported for the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues not only pose a risk of injury but also highlight the importance of regular vehicle inspections and adherence to recall notices when applicable.
  • Equipment Failures: Equipment failures, such as parking brake malfunctions or service brake system warnings, can compromise vehicle safety and require immediate attention from certified professionals to ensure the proper functioning of these vital systems.

In conclusion, the second generation of the Chevy S10, while celebrated for its versatility and durability, has its share of common problems and complaints from owners. Recognizing these issues is crucial for current and prospective owners aiming to make informed decisions regarding maintenance, repairs, and overall vehicle care. By staying informed and addressing these issues promptly, owners can ensure their Chevy S10 continues to serve them well for years to come.

Latest negative Chevrolet S10 car reviews

  1. Olin Swaniawski 2024-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2002

This S-10 has been very reliable with good handling capabilities and great 'go anywhere' capability. It also has a suspension that is very good for its class and boasts very good fuel economy (23-27hwy & 17-19city) with plenty of power for its class. However, there are some cons to this vehicle such as cheap finishes, trim, paint, and fitting of interior parts. Additionally, the vehicle has a very poor turning radius.

The side seat handles have been replaced three times, but unfortunately, they still do not work. Additionally, the passenger compartment is smaller than expected and the interior plastic used by GM is of poor quality. The transmission was overhauled at 40000 miles, but it started slipping again after a year. Despite having it checked before the extended warranty expired, no action was taken. Currently, the brakes are weak and require attention. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the right expertise and attention.

Although the truck has had some mechanical issues, it still has less than 100,000 miles and has a lot of potential. With some improvements to the transmission and interior, this truck could be a great investment. It's important to address these issues early on to ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

The reason I decided to purchase a GM product was because I had a $4K rebate on my GM card. I have been pleasantly surprised that I haven't had to pay for any repairs yet, only maintenance. However, there have been some issues such as the 3rd door sticking sometimes and some shaking, rattling, and rolling. Additionally, the 2.2L engine is not as powerful as I would like.

The car has several issues that need to be addressed. The build quality is poor, resulting in wind noise and other problems. The brakes are clunky, and the power steering can be unreliable. Additionally, the transmission is not smooth when driving in the city. These issues can be resolved with proper attention and maintenance.

I owned a Dodge Dakota for 9 years and put over 140,000 miles on it. Recently, I bought a Chevy S-10 crew cab and I can't believe I ever lived without 4 doors. It has plenty of horsepower and I take it on the outer beach about once a week, and it just goes. The 4.3 engine has been around for a while and has proven itself as a reliable choice. I looked at the Colorado before purchasing my S-10. In fact, I was even waiting for it to come out. But after doing my homework, I quickly ordered an S-10. Some of the features that the Colorado will not be getting include 4-wheel disc brakes and 250lbs of torque.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to say that I absolutely adore this truck. It's been with me for quite some time now, and even at 160,000 miles, it's still running like a champ! I've had a few minor issues here and there, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a little TLC. I'm confident that it'll keep on truckin' for a while longer! It's perfect for hauling all sorts of things, from furniture to rocks to dirt, and it's great for passing other cars on the road.

I bought my truck based on the 3rd door and the indigo blue color. It may seem like a 'girl' thing, but being from a true Chevy family (with 5 Chevy cars, a truck, and SUVs from the same dealer), it was a no-brainer for me. Living in the Bay Area, the V6 has served me well going up and down hills. I drive a lot to SoCal and it's always a comfortable drive. I haven't had any maintenance problems other than normal wear and tear. I would definitely buy another truck.

I've been driving this truck for the past five years and I absolutely love getting into it every morning. Recently, I put a new paint job on it because the old one was fading. People have been asking me if I want to sell it, but my answer is a resounding no. This truck is amazing in the winter - the 4WD can get me through any snowstorm. Plus, I've only had to do normal maintenance like brakes and oil changes.

I have driven Ford Rangers for the past 15 years, and this truck is by far the fastest and best-riding truck I have owned. The 4WD is great for snow and good in the mud. The storage behind the seat is good for tools and small items (not for adults). It gets around 20 MPG around town.
