Chevrolet S10 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common Chevrolet S10 problems

The Chevrolet S10, a compact pickup truck, has been celebrated for its versatility and durability. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems and complaints from owners. This article will explore some of these issues, focusing on the second generation of the Chevy S10, produced between 1994 and 2004.

  • Faulty Heater Core: The heater core is a crucial component of the vehicle's heating system. When it malfunctions, it can cause symptoms such as coolant leaks, reduced heat output, or even engine overheating. The heater core is located in the dashboard, and repairing it often requires the removal of the upper engine parts like fuel lines and the A/C compressor.
  • Distributor Problems: The distributor is responsible for distributing the high voltage from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the correct order. Common problems with the distributor on the Chevy S10 include a bad distributor cap and rotor or worn internal parts. Symptoms of distributor problems may include engine misfires, the engine turning over but not starting, or a check engine light for misfire codes P0300-P0306.
  • Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant issue for the second generation of the Chevy S10. It can result in symptoms such as transmission slipping, difficulty shifting gears, or complete transmission failure. The most reported problem in this category is transmission failure in the 2002 S-10 Pickup, with an average cost to fix of $1,400 and an average mileage of 58,000 mi.
  • Fuel System Issues: Fuel system issues are another common problem for the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues can range from fuel tank cracks at the inlet tube connection point, which can lead to fuel leaks and gas fumes, to malfunctioning fuel level sensors, which can cause erratic fuel gauge readings. Fuel system issues not only pose safety and environmental concerns but can also impact the vehicle's overall performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Electrical System Malfunctions: Electrical system malfunctions, such as headlights and horns activating unexpectedly, are a common complaint among owners of the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues are often attributed to a malfunctioning body control module or faulty wiring and can pose an inconvenience and potentially lead to more significant repairs if not addressed promptly.
  • Suspension and Steering Complaints: Suspension and steering complaints, such as premature wear of suspension components or steering difficulties, are another common issue for the second generation of the Chevy S10. Regular checks and timely component replacements are recommended to maintain the truck's performance and safety.
  • Structural Integrity Issues: Structural integrity issues, such as liftgate collapse due to fractured tailgate cables, have been reported for the second generation of the Chevy S10. These issues not only pose a risk of injury but also highlight the importance of regular vehicle inspections and adherence to recall notices when applicable.
  • Equipment Failures: Equipment failures, such as parking brake malfunctions or service brake system warnings, can compromise vehicle safety and require immediate attention from certified professionals to ensure the proper functioning of these vital systems.

In conclusion, the second generation of the Chevy S10, while celebrated for its versatility and durability, has its share of common problems and complaints from owners. Recognizing these issues is crucial for current and prospective owners aiming to make informed decisions regarding maintenance, repairs, and overall vehicle care. By staying informed and addressing these issues promptly, owners can ensure their Chevy S10 continues to serve them well for years to come.

I've been the proud owner of the Crew Cab S-10 for almost two months now, and it has proven to be an excellent value for the money spent. With all the incentives, it was the best deal on the market for a truck that can comfortably seat a family of four and fit in my garage. Although there were a few things I didn't like about the truck, I was able to fix them shortly after buying it. I did, however, find the OEM 15

I've owned a '89 S-10 Reg Cab 4cyl/5spd, a '91 S-10 Reg Cab 4cyl/5spd, and now a '99 S-10 Ext Cab 6cyl/5spd. While I enjoyed the older models, I have to say that the '99 has not been my favorite. It tends to squeak and rattle while driving, and the automatic headlights, radio that stays on after the ignition is turned off, and interior light that comes on after removing the ignition key can be a bit much. Additionally, I feel that the newer S-10s are not built as well as the older models. In my experience, this has been the worst S-10 I've owned. If you're considering purchasing an S-10, I would recommend looking for a pre-94 model.

This truck has some areas that require improvement, but with the right attention and care, it can be a reliable vehicle. Some of the features that could be improved include the 4cyl engine, automatic transmission, and interior materials. Additionally, there are some maintenance issues that need to be addressed, such as the engine service light and shocks/struts. However, with proper maintenance, this truck can still provide value and serve its purpose effectively.

I replaced the rear end twice in the first year I owned it. I had the third door handle replaced and it is broken again. Neither of the seats recline anymore, and both handles have broken.

Fantastic truck! It's so much fun to drive and it looks great too! I almost hate to get to my destination. The fuel economy has been excellent and it holds just enough in the bed, plus we can squeeze three people in the cab. I wish I had another one!

My friends and I have owned S10s since we were old enough to drive. I bought my 02 S10 for $3800.00 with 168k on the odometer. Since then, it has towed my boats, pulled trucks three times its size off the beach, been loaded with 1500 lbs of concrete blocks for home improvement projects, spent a good deal of time off-roading in the hills of KY, and all the while taken me an additional 72,000 miles. I have now passed the truck to my brother who uses it every day. I can't say enough good things about it. The S10 is completely bulletproof. There is a good reason you see so many of these trucks on the road to this day. It possesses a rugged simplicity that is unmatched by anything on the road today.

I bought my 2.5L 4cyl Short Box with Automatic Transmission and Rallye Wheels brand new in 09-91. I'm happy to report that my S10 still delivers decent mileage, competent handling, and outstanding reliability. I have not had to make any engine, transmission, or electrical repairs under the hood. The only parts that have needed replacing are the fuel pump and the dashboard fuel gauge, which were both replaced at 138,000 miles. Additionally, I replaced the serpentine belt at 95,000 miles and the water pump at 110,000 miles. While the 4-cyl lacks punch in overdrive, the transmission compensates nicely with well-tuned gearing and 89 octane gas, provided you are willing to down-shift the automatic manually. I highly recommend this vehicle.

After reading some negative reviews, I wanted to share my positive experiences with my truck so far. I purchased my V6/auto truck brand new in 2001 and it has never needed to go back to the dealership for repairs. A couple of years ago, I replaced the battery myself when it started seeping acid from the side post. Other than that, I've only needed to do oil/filter changes and suspension grease jobs. I've taken the truck on three 3000 mile round trips to Florida and have averaged 24-26 mpg on each trip! The seats are also very comfortable for long road trips.

I bought my 3 door LS extended cab 2WD 2.2L brand new off the dealership lot in August of 2001 and have been thrilled with it ever since. It's been almost 14 years and 116,000 miles, and we're still going strong. I've always appreciated the reliability and simplicity of my S-10 (I'm old, so I love how straightforward it is!) All I've ever done is preventative maintenance, and I've never had any issues with it, except for a new exhaust system last year. It hasn't rusted at all, and it seems like a great truck for the money, especially since I didn't want the Silverado MPG. I took it on a 410-mile trip last weekend without any problems, and the 4-cylinder got 24 MPG, even with the hilly Missouri terrain and the Cruise Control set to 70. I really adore this truck, and since it's lasted 13 ILL winters without any issues, I'll keep it for another 13+!
