2004 Chevrolet S10 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common 2004 Chevrolet S10 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet S10 2004, several common problems have been reported:

  1. ABS Light Due to Brake System Control Unit Failure:
    • One of the common issues reported is the ABS light coming on due to brake system control unit failure. This can indicate a problem with the anti-lock braking system, affecting the vehicle's braking performance and safety.
  2. Coolant and Oil Leaks:
    • Owners have reported coolant and oil leaks, particularly in the V6 version of the S10. Coolant leaks at the intake can lead to coolant dripping behind the water pump area, requiring resealing of the intake. Additionally, coolant seepage into the engine oil can occur due to the intake leak.
  3. Heater Core Problems:
    • Another issue is related to the heater core, which can lead to heating system malfunctions. Symptoms of a faulty heater core include the need to remove upper engine parts like fuel lines and the A/C compressor for repair.
  4. Distributor Problems:
    • Distributor issues have been reported, manifesting as engine misfires, difficulty starting the engine, and check engine lights indicating misfire codes. Common causes include a bad distributor cap and rotor, or worn internal parts.
  5. Fuel Level Sensor Malfunction:
    • The fuel level sensor located in the fuel tank can cause erratic fuel gauge readings and inaccurate fuel level indications. Replacing the fuel level sensor may require removing the fuel tank or even the bed of the truck for access.
  6. MAP Sensor Issues:
    • Problems with the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor, located in the intake manifold, can result in poor fuel economy, rough running, hard starting, and a check engine light. Replacing the MAP sensor is relatively straightforward.

These common problems with the Chevrolet S10 2004 can impact various aspects of the vehicle's performance, safety, and reliability. Owners experiencing these issues should consider seeking professional assistance to diagnose and address the specific problem effectively.

Negative 2004 Chevrolet S10 car reviews

  1. Tyrell Stoltenberg 2024-10-10

I completely understand where you're coming from. It can be tough when the price is the deciding factor. It seems like the new Colorados are a bit too expensive for your liking. Have you considered looking into a Ford F-150 Crew cab instead? It might be a more affordable option for you.

  2. Brian Beer 2024-06-19

ABS in this truck has been a bit of a nightmare. I've had to go to the shop 5 times already. I'm crossing my fingers that it won't happen again, but I've said that 4 times before. Other than that, it's a good truck for light work.

  3. Ramiro Stark 2024-06-12

The front suspension (4x4) experienced issues that required a rebuild at 60,000 miles. Additionally, the vacuum system and actuators required a rebuild at 55,000 miles. Despite these challenges, it is still a great truck.

  4. Tod Herman 2024-03-11

The truck has a small engine noise, which sounds like lifters. While driving, it may sound like the window is open, but I was told it's the roof rack. The upgrade to 5 CDs costs $400, which seems a bit steep. I'm not entirely satisfied with the sound and features of the stereo for the cost of the upgrade. The bed of the truck is a bit shallow, and I would not choose cloth seats again as they seem to attract dirt like a magnet. Additionally, there isn't much room in the back seat, and with two small children aged 4 and 6, their feet are very close to the driver's seat. The gas mileage for a small truck is 15 to 18 mpg, and the gas tank is also quite small, requiring a refill after about 200 miles.

Positive 2004 Chevrolet S10 car reviews

  1. Brendan Jaskolski 2024-11-28

I owned a Dodge Dakota for 9 years and put over 140,000 miles on it. Recently, I bought a Chevy S-10 crew cab and I can't believe I ever lived without 4 doors. It has plenty of horsepower and I take it on the outer beach about once a week, and it just goes. The 4.3 engine has been around for a while and has proven itself as a reliable choice. I looked at the Colorado before purchasing my S-10. In fact, I was even waiting for it to come out. But after doing my homework, I quickly ordered an S-10. Some of the features that the Colorado will not be getting include 4-wheel disc brakes and 250lbs of torque.

  2. Alvah Sanford 2024-11-08

I've owned two S-10's and loved them both. They always did what I asked of them, even things that were really pushing the limits of the truck. My 2000 extended cab, which I never really understood the one fold-up seat in the back, I drove to 120,000 miles with no problems. Then I bought a 2004 ZR5, which was a great truck. The only thing I would have changed about this truck is the size of the box, but I got by with it. It hauled my wood and a load of rock that I needed with no problem. I would have kept the truck, but I had to replace the rear end twice. I've researched this and can't find anything where it's a popular problem, so maybe it was just a freak thing with mine. I was without a car for one week both times.

  3. Tyrique Shanahan 2024-09-07

Hey there! I just wanted to share my thoughts on this amazing car. It's seriously sweet, dude! The handling is outstanding and it's really smooth. I opted for the leather interior and it is so comfortable, I can't get enough of it. I give it 5 stars without a doubt!

  4. Albin Lesch 2024-07-28

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you've had the truck for only a month, which is great! As someone who has owned three S-10s, I'm sure you know what you're looking for in a pickup. It's great to hear that you find it very comfortable and roomy, even though you don't really care for the no-choice black-only interior. I agree that the outward design is eye-catching, and I can see why you prefer the looks over the Colorado, especially because of the odd wheel-well shape on the Colorado. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!

  5. Landen Hackett 2024-07-28

Although the seat material is not great, the Colorado ZR5 is a nice riding truck with a very nice design. However, I have noticed that the Colorado has very limited storage space compared to the S-10. At least with the S-10, you can put things behind the seat, whereas the Colorado doesn't even have enough room for a long ice scraper.
