Chevrolet S10 1987 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common Chevrolet S10 1987 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 1987 Chevrolet S10, several common problems have been reported:

  • Stalling Out Issue:
    • Another prevalent problem is the vehicle stalling out after running for a short period, typically 15-20 seconds. This issue can be attributed to various factors such as electrical problems, fuel pump issues, or components like the M.A.P sensor, spark plugs, plug wires, coil, and air idle control valve.
  • Fuel Pump Problems:
    • Owners have reported issues related to the fuel pump, including difficulty starting the vehicle, engine not turning over, and a lack of fuel smell despite cranking the engine. Replacing the fuel pump in the 1987 Chevrolet S10 can be a challenging task, often requiring access to the top of the tank or even removing the bed of the truck to reach the pump assembly.
  • EGR Valve and Vacuum Line Concerns:
    • Some owners have experienced engine performance issues related to the EGR valve and vacuum lines. Improper installation of the EGR valve or damaged vacuum lines can lead to rough idling, stalling, or poor engine performance, especially under load conditions like going uphill.
  • Electrical and Fuel System Problems:
    • Electrical issues, particularly related to the wiring to the fuel pump and fuel relay, have been highlighted as potential causes of stalling or starting problems in the 1987 Chevrolet S10. Additionally, fuel system components like the fuel regulator in the TBI (Throttle Body Injection) system may require attention to ensure proper fuel delivery.

These common problems with the 1987 Chevrolet S10 can impact the vehicle's performance, safety, and reliability. Addressing these issues promptly through proper diagnosis and repair can help maintain the optimal functioning of the vehicle and ensure a smoother driving experience for owners.
