1996 Chevrolet S10 problems

The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that some Chevy trucks were shipped with a faulty head gasket and a few other issues that can cause some thumping noises. Unfortunately, the 2.2L engine doesn't have a lot of power. On the bright side, my old '88 Chevy (which I sold to a friend) is still running strong with over 250k miles! However, I am currently at 150k miles and need to rebuild everything. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

  2. Cruz Boyer 2024-09-23

I purchased this truck brand new in 1995 and unfortunately, I have experienced a number of issues with it. The fan clutch broke at just 1,500 miles and the manual transmission clutch failed at 2,500 miles. Despite having to undergo two transmission jobs, replacing a few U-joints, spending several hundred dollars on A/C repairs, dealing with a broken timing chain, and even having to undergo a total engine rebuild, I am still not satisfied with the performance of this vehicle. As a result, I have decided that I will not be purchasing another S-10.

Hi there! I've owned a few S-10s in my time, and while they've generally been reliable, my 1996 model has been a bit of a headache. I've had to deal with a laundry list of issues, including problems with the brakes, wiper motor, speedometer, A/C, heater, intake, radiator, transmission, and now the water pump! On top of that, I've gone through five batteries, five thermostats, two radios, and even had to replace the back window. All of this happened at just 74,554 miles! So, if you're considering buying one, just be aware of the potential risks. Thanks for reading!

  4. Jamey Mueller 2024-06-15

I have experienced multiple issues with this vehicle, including 3 rear main seal leaks, 2 oil pan leaks, and 9 rear pinion seal leaks, which unfortunately continue to persist.

  5. Immanuel Runolfsson 2024-05-27

Hi there! I am the original owner of my 4wd ext. cab ZR2 with 100K mi as of 12/05, and I have to say, it has been a blast to drive off road and to haul stuff with. However, there have been a few major repairs that have cost quite a bit of money: the transmission at 50K mi, fuel pump, power window motor & switches, 6 batteries, oil leaks, two A/C units, two alternators, electrical problems, idler pulley and recently some ignition system problems. Also, at 16 MPG on the highway, it is not the best for commuting. But, I am happy to say that the 4.3L Vortec V6 has been strong and burns no oil. Thanks for listening!

This is such an awesome little truck! It's great for everything, especially in the snow - it slides around corners nicely and does great in the mud (I've never gotten stuck). However, it's not the best when it comes to rivers and bridges. On the bright side, parts for this truck are extremely cheap!

  2. Dennis Runolfsdottir 2024-09-07

The Chevy S-10 has a solid engine with the Vortec V6. Although, I have experienced some of the same issues as many others. For instance, the vanity mirror light stayed illuminated, ABS grinds, and the mirror rattled loose. Additionally, the transmission, clutch, and catalytic converter went out at 50K. At some point, still under warranty, the wiper delay module went out. Now, every summer, the AC needs recharging ($10 kit from Wal-Mart). It is expected that with high mileage, the water pump, O2 sensor, alternator, and U-joints will need replacing. The check engine light stays on now with 135,700 with no other indications of mechanical problems. However, with regular maintenance, the engine has no problem. I will probably drive it until the wheels fall off.

  3. Jasen Harvey 2024-08-26

The original owner of this black ZR2 had great things to say about it, including excellent sightlines from the driver's seat and a great look. Unfortunately, there were some issues with the ABS chip failing in the first week of ownership and three front hubs needing replacement before 42K due to a combination of failed parts and mechanic error. Additionally, due to oversized tires (31x10.5) being mounted on standard 4wd wheel steering and suspension assemblies (except for Bilstein shocks), this truck tends to eat through brakes and lower ball joints. The fuel efficiency has never been great, with a maximum of 19.8 MPG and an average of about 16 MPG with hard driving. However, the owner has been meticulous with scheduled maintenance, including flushing the transmission. Major costs have included replacing the encoder motor at 130K, and the fuel pump, water pump, and alternator near 150K. Despite these issues, the original engine and transmission are still running very well.

  4. Cristopher Glover 2024-07-04

The quality of your vehicle is superb! It's great to hear that you've had virtually no trouble with it in the 8 years you've owned it.

  5. Nels Kautzer 2024-06-21

After owning my S-10 for about four years, I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It's been a great experience taking it to places you would never believe. If you're a fan of smaller trucks, don't overlook this one!
