2013 Chevrolet Cruze problems
The Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car that has been produced by General Motors since 2008. It was designated as a globally developed, designed, and manufactured four-door compact sedan, complemented by a five-door hatchback body variant from 2011, and a station wagon in 2012. During its introduction, the Cruze replaces several compact models, including the Chevrolet Optra which was sold internationally under various names, the Chevrolet Cobalt sold exclusively in North America, and the Australasian-market Holden Astra.
The Cruze was released in 2008 for the South Korean market as the Daewoo Lacetti Premiere until the phasing out of the Daewoo brand in 2011, when it was renamed to Chevrolet Cruze. In Australasia, the model was sold between 2009 and 2016 as the Holden Cruze. In 2016, the Cruze sedan was restyled and renamed for the Australasian market as the Holden Astra Sedan, as a sedan complement to the Holden Astra family.
Due to the market shift towards SUVs and decreasing sales, the Cruze has been gradually phased out. Production of the Cruze in South Korea ended in 2018 as part of restructuring of GM Korea, which in turn ceased supply of the Holden Astra Sedan to Australasia. In the United States and Mexico, production ended in 2019, while production in China ended in 2020. Production continued in Argentina until 2023. It was replaced by the Monza in China, which is known as the Cavalier in Mexico.
Previously, the nameplate has been used for a version of a subcompact hatchback car produced under a joint venture with Suzuki from 2001 to 2007, and was based on the Suzuki Ignis.

Common 2013 Chevrolet Cruze problems
The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include engine problems, coolant leaks, ignition coils, electrical issues, and transmission issues.
Engine problems are a significant concern for the 2013 Cruze. Many owners have reported issues with the engine, including stalling while driving, failure, and smoke under the hood. These problems are often caused by a damaged cylinder that leaks oil or metal shrapnel that contaminates the turbo injector. The 2017-2018 models of the Cruze are particularly prone to engine problems.
Coolant leaks are another common issue with the 2013 Cruze. Owners have reported a strong smell of antifreeze leaking into the interior of the car, and in some cases, smoke has been seen coming from under the hood. The leak can cause the engine to overheat and automatically disable the A/C unit. Coolant leaks must be fixed as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the engine.
Ignition coils may also fail in the 2013 Cruze, causing misfiring. Replacing one ignition coil is not very expensive, but if the spark plugs are old, it's recommended to replace all the spark plugs at the same time.
Electrical issues have been reported by many Cruze owners, including problems with the display turning off and on, Antilock Brake System, Service Traction System, Service and Steering vehicle messages, and more. These problems are often caused by a loose negative battery cable, and GM service bulletin 14311B extends the coverage for this problem, with dealers replacing the negative battery cable.
Transmission issues are also common in the 2013 Cruze. Leaking transmission cooler lines are often reported, and if the automatic transmission fluid is low, it can cause the transmission to fail sooner. Transmission failure is the most reported issue in the 2011 model year, and repair options include rebuilding the transmission or replacing it with a new or used unit.
In summary, the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze has several common problems that have been reported by owners, including engine problems, coolant leaks, ignition coils, electrical issues, and transmission issues. These issues can be expensive to repair, and some owners have reported multiple problems with their vehicles. If you are considering purchasing a used 2013 Cruze, it's essential to be aware of these common problems and consider an extended powertrain warranty that will cover engine/transmission repairs.

- Summary: The engine in my 2013 chevy cruze failed due to the head gasket, and it causes the car to overheat. Chevrolet issued a recall on some 2013 and 2014 Cruze models for head gasket problems. The gasket in these models is known to fail and that can completely destroy the motor. When a head gasket fails that allows the oil and the coolant to mix; and that will destroy the lubrication in your engine and cause the engine to fail. Pepboys repair shop-- has the repair invoice.

STEERING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-03
- VIN: 1G1PC5SB5D7
- Components: STEERING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The cars first started telling me randomly that it needed service to the stabilitrak and the. Would disappear, the next component was the anti theft activated and after turning car off..next time I tried to turn on, it acted as if battery was dead and locked my key in ignition. Fixed itself a couple hours later. Next time it gave me issues all of these components started to come on at same time while also causing power steering to come on and go out in the middle of driving which could have caused a horrible wreck (didn’t thank god) and also started flickering lights inside and outside of car, and the radio turned on and off as well…the car now will not turn on and acts as if battery is dead unless I use cables and have someone jump start my car…it definitely seems to be shorting out like the wiring isn’t working the way it should…I have now taken it to auto one and they tested battery and altinater and said both were in great condition, so I researched and have seen that my car make and model years from 2011-2015 have a recall on the negative battery cable not being crimped right enough but my car specifically isn’t included because it is past its warranty…which I’m sorry is ridiculous in every way no matter any warranty this was a mistake made by the manufacturer and it should be corrected on every car that is included in the years they specifically stated themselves they failed to do correctly when made…my car behaving this way and putting me and my family in danger is nothing that is our fault but the manufacturers and it should 100% be covered…I’m currently waiting to have it looked at by mechanic to reconfirm what I already know, and will know shortly that it is indeed the negative battery cable..I need this covered and corrected by dealer near me

- VIN: 1G1PE5SB6D7
- Components: SUSPENSION,ENGINE
- Summary: There is a leak that is causing the coolant reservoir tank to empty every couple of days. It appears that the coolant fumes are going inside the car. It has been taken to the repair shop on several occasions and has had the coolant reservoir replaced. However, the problems persists and the coolant fumes are making me ill from inhaling them. The car was taking in to a Chevrolet dealer December 2023 for an oil change and the service technician stated my car was “fine”. I asked about any possible leaks as I have observed spots in my parking spot. He assured me there were no problems with my car, but I persisted. He printed the service log and he determined the staff who completed the oil change had in fact noticed a leak, but the guy at the desk assured me there was not a problem. A few weeks have gone by and coolant continues to leak and the fumes are getting inside the cabin of the car. They are most noticeable when use the heater or the AC and the fumes can also be observed when I exit the car.

2013 Chevrolet Cruze recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Buick Verano and 2016 Chevrolet Malibu as the electronic park lock lever may allow the ignition key to be removed without the transmission being in PARK. Also, certain 2013 Buick Encore, 2011 Buick Regal, 2013-2014 Buick Verano, 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox 2013-2015 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2011-2013 GMC Terrain vehicles may have been serviced with similar defective replacement electronic park lock levers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
- Consequence: If the key is removed without the transmission in PARK, the vehicle may rollaway as occupants are exiting, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the key cylinder lock housing, free of charge. The recall began on October 14, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick 1-800-521-7300, and GMC 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 50490 and 50491.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Buick Encore all-wheel-drive vehicles manufactured August 23, 2012, to September 9, 2013; Verano vehicles manufactured August 8, 2012, to June 20, 2013; Chevrolet Cruze vehicles manufactured August 7, 2012, to August 16, 2013, and 2012-2014 Chevrolet Sonic vehicles manufactured May 10, 2011, to August 16, 2012 equipped with a Calix oil pan/block heater. In cold temperatures, the insulation on the engine block heater cord can become damaged, allowing the wires to be exposed.
- Consequence: Exposed wires increase the risk of electrical shock and personal injury if the cord is handled while it is plugged in.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine oil pan/block heater cord with a new cord that is rated for temperatures of minus 40 degree Celsius. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14257.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the driver's front air bag inflator may have been manufactured with an incorrect part.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's air bag, the air bag's inflator may rupture and the air bag may not inflate. The rupture could cause metal fragments to strike and potentially seriously injure the vehicle occupants. Additionally, if the air bag does not inflate, the driver is at an increased risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver side air bag, free of charge. The recall began on June 28, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 14305.

- Consequence: If the half shaft fractures and separates while driving, the vehicle would lose power and coast to a stop. If a vehicle with a fractured half shaft is parked without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could move unexpectedly. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the right half shaft, as needed, free of charge. Parts for the remedy are not currently available. GM will send an interim letter to owners in May 2014. A second owner letter will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-866-694-6546. GM's number for this recall is 14079. This is an expansion of recall 13V-452. NOTE: Some vehicles subject to this recall were subject to the recall campaign initiated in 2013. Some of those vehicles were repaired using defective parts. The VALVE cap was replaced in 2014 and the Purge Valve was replaced in 2015. Recently, the car has been turning off randomly when at a stop and the computer panel shuts off without warning. Additionally, when idle, the car jerks. Most recently, there has been a noticeable smell of gas inside the car when it is on and at a stop.

I bought this car used from the dealer and it had a few minor recalls that were easily fixed. While the price was nice, I found that there are better cars available at the same price point. However, I was happy with it for what it was - a cheaper, reliable car for getting around town that got good gas mileage. The visibility was good and the backup camera was great. Driving was comfortable and the satellite road was very helpful. The controls were easily accessible and the gas mileage was great. The trunk space was fine and the USB charger in the front console was a nice touch. The pockets on the doors were also a nice feature. The headlights were bright and the seats were easily cleaned. I had a Montana that would stain with water stains every time it rained or got snow on them, but this car did not have that issue. Even when a Jeep Laredo hit me, there was hardly any damage done to it! However, there were some downsides. The car was extremely underpowered from a standstill and the passenger legroom was small due to the glovebox. The cloth material on the dash looks nice but I'm not sure about its longevity. The passenger footroom was also small because of the depth of the glovebox. The window defrost is only in the center of the dash and it would take forever to defrost (I live in Canada). The cup holders placement was awkward and there was no interior trunk release - I had to turn off the car to use the trunk release. There was also no legroom in the back seats (remember it's a small car). The car would jerk at times when stopped and I don't know why. There was also a smell coming from the engine compartment when I first bought it, which smelt like burning antifreeze, but it has since stopped. The cheap plastic on the exterior trim would fade and the armrest was extremely small and needs to be longer. Overall, this car would be great for someone under 5'7, but not for tall or bigger people. The dash plastic had a nice style but looked and felt cheap.

I had this car for 7 years! It never gave me any problems and always got me where I needed to go, although I always made sure to keep up with its maintenance. I would definitely recommend it 100%!!!

My wife and I have been driving cars for over 45 years. We hadn't purchased a Chevy in more than 25 years until 2013 when we decided to buy a Cruze. Before that, we owned an Elantra, a Focus, a Volks Golf, and a Dodge Caravan. We test drove several cars, including the Elantra, Focus, Mazda, and Toyota, but ultimately chose the Cruze 6-speed standard. We have been extremely satisfied with our decision, having driven approximately 20,000 miles in the past 10 months without any issues.

I've been the proud owner of a 2013 Cruze LT for two and a half years now, and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any issues with it. My wife loves it too! Although, it would be even better if Chevrolet could increase the interior space and armrest.

I bought the car from the dealer as a demo vehicle with less than 5,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had nothing but issues with it. The car has no pick up, which makes crossing intersections a bit nerve-wracking. Six months into owning the vehicle, it started overheating and giving me a message that read 'a/c off due to high engine temps.' When I took it to the dealer, they couldn't find the issue, and the message was no longer there. Unfortunately, 100 miles over my warranty expiration, it happened again. I had to get the car towed there, and only then did they find the issue. The repairs cost me almost $2,000.00. Not even a month later, the check engine light was back on. Now, every time I pump gas, it gives me a hard time to start and is very shaky, to the point where I have to turn off the car and turn it back on. Sometimes, when I try to turn it off, the engine stays on even if I take the key out. This car has been a real lemon, and I am also looking into the lemon law. I know a few people that own this vehicle, not necessarily 2013 but newer models as well, and they have had the same problems. So, my advice is to avoid buying this car.

We had a tough time with our 2013 Cruz. It was in the garage 11 times in the first two years, and we had problems associated with the power train. The turbo went twice! We couldn't wait to get out of this car! Unfortunately, they don't hold their value well, and we took a big hit when we went to trade it in. If you're looking for something reliable and that holds its value, I'd keep looking. The only plus was the technology, but reliability and dependability are much more important, and we didn't get that!

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with the Chevy Cruze. While I personally had some issues with it, I would recommend considering other options like Honda or Nissan. The car had been recalled twice, but unfortunately not for the known faulty transmission. I did experience some surging and jerking, and even needed a new transient for my 2 year old car. To make matters worse, I had to go back three times in a week because the new one wasn't installed correctly. Just wanted to give you a heads up! :)

We noticed some spots on the hood where the paint had peeled away. After visiting the Chevy dealer and speaking to Chevy corporate, they concluded that bird droppings caused the paint chips. Unfortunately, they refused to fix the problem and informed us that it would cost $500 to repair. We were also disappointed to find that our actual MPG was only 25, which was not what we expected. Additionally, there have been two recalls on safety issues in the year that we've had the car. If we had known about these issues beforehand, we would not have purchased the car. We want to warn others to be careful. It's unfortunate that Chevy won't stand behind the quality of its cars. We will not be purchasing another Chevy.
