2004 Chevrolet Colorado problems
The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-13
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1GCCS196748
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: There apparently was fuel dripping onto the starter and soaking the starter so when we went to start the truck. It caught on fire And my truck is a total loss
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-15
- VIN: 1GCDT136148
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: One day, after I turned my truck off, I noticed that my taillights and overhead cargo light remained on. Key was out, truck was off, but the lights stayed on. So for the time being, I disconnected the battery. I brought it to a mechanic, who ran the codes that came back that the rear driver turn signal was high, the rear passenger turn signal was high, and the overhead cargo light was high. He checked the entire truck for a short, replaced the taillights, replaced the fuse box, replaced the body control module, and numerous other attempts at a repair, with no success. I was without a vehicle for many months, since I can't afford the absurd prices of the current vehicle market and was hopeful it could be fixed. Reading through some other complaints/online threads, this seems like a fairly common problem with these vehicles. Electrical issues that affect my ability to use a turn signal are a huge safety concern and this needs to be addressed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-23
- VIN: 1GCDT136248
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Frame of my vehicle is rotting away causing to fail inspection. Just finding out that Toyota did a recall on one of there pick up models replacing their frame due rotting frames that may be a safety factor if it gets into an accident. Does Chevy Colorado have a recall as such? Just had my frame recently welded on a piece of heavy metal to reinforce my frame in order to pass a safety inspection
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-10
- VIN: 1GCCS196348
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Ignition safety module known as pass lock security. This causes my vehicle not to start and give a code and a light on the dash for the Pass Lock security. The vehicle was fine then I went into a store came out and put the key in the ignition, the lights on the dash came on but it would not crank. This is very hazardous cause It could happen while you’re driving anytime, which could cause the vehicle to go into security mode and turn vehicle off making it very dangerous for passengers in vehicle. This is a problem with other Chevy Colorado's when I research this problem.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-17
- VIN: 1GCCS146548
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Body Control Module, BCM. Controls everything. Air bag can deploy, breaks can lock up. Mine, the hazards were staying on. Chevy Dealer says they are on National Back Order and GM is canceling those orders after so long placed. “We can get you one from a junk yard for $350 but GM won’t let us properly program them with correct codes, and so many times they won’t take, and I can’t return the part”. My response to GM already and to Congressman Westerman, BBB, and the WH. A part such as the on board computer, SAFETY first, should never come from a junk yard and if GM doesn’t want to supply the part AS we all know they need them for newer cars right now….. You, the NHTSB and all of us are in danger. There is an expiration date on our cars, but we’re not being told. A computer that controls EVERYTHING in a vehicle is more important than a safety belt. Me not wearing it kills me. Me being told by the dealer I could leave my fuses out and put my arm out the window. Boy I hate being a retired SGM, cause I ain’t allowed to put my boot in a six.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-06
- VIN: 1GCDT136X48
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Mechanic had the truck on the lift raised up to check the brakes for squeaking and while under the truck the mechanic inspected the frame because he noticed a lot of rust and called me to come look at it and pointed out that the frame has rotted to the point that he should not be driven and could break in half and cause major problems for the safety of the occupants and other drivers on the road. I looked up online if other Colorado owners had the same issue and others have the same problem. I’m am forced to junk this vehicle even though the rest of the truck is in very good condition
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-20
- VIN: 1gcdt136448
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I was checking on the common rear cab rust and noticed the frame looked rusted through just in front of the rear wheel suspension mount. I took it to my local mechanic (Bob's Repair of Mayer) and they said it was not safe to drive. It is a complete blindside to me and now I have to find a spare (safe) car to help drive around my newborn and toddler. I am going to attempt to repair the frame as I do not have any other options for vehicles. There were obviously no warnings are notices that about this issue, but it seems to be uncannily common for this generation of Chevrolet vehicles. The truck only has 160,000 miles on it and surface rust on the cab. The vehicle is not drivable and not safe as the frame could give away at any moment.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-01
- VIN: 1GCDT196448
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: FRAME RUSTED OUT LIKE THE TOYOTAS DID AND IS NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-27
- VIN: 1GCDT196448
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK ROTTED AND IS NO LONGER DRIVEABLE WITHOUT A CHANCE OF AN ACCIDENT. THE PA INSPECTION IS ABOUT TO RUN OUT ALSO AND WILL NOT PASS INPECTION. I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK USED AND JUST PAID IT OFF AND WAS HOPING I WAS CLEAR OF ANY VEHICLE PAYMENTS. AT THIS POINT THERE IS NO WAY I WILL EVEN GET CLOSE TO WHAT I PAID FOR IT AS IT IS ONLY GOOD FOR SCRAP. I AGREE WITH ANOTHER POST I SAW ON HERE THAT SAID IF TOYOTA HAD TO RECALL THEIR VEHICLES FOR THE SAME REASON THEN WHY DOES GM NOT HAVE TO DO THE SAME THING? IT ONLY SEEMS RIGHT. I KNOW THEY HAVE HEARD OF THIS ISSUE BUT ARE JUST TRYING TO BRUSH IT UNDER THE RUG HOPING IT DOESN'T COME UP. HOPING YOU HAVE OUR BACK ON THIS WITH TRYING TO PROTECT THE CONSUMER.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-19
- VIN: 1GCDT136648
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: VEHICLE HAS 96,800 MILES, AND THE FRAME HAS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH CAUSING THE REAR SUSPENSION TO DETACH FROM THE FRAME, AS WELL AS THE BED TO DETACH FROM THE FRAME. VEHICLE IS NO LONGER ABLE TO BE PUT ON LIFT TO HAVE TIRES ROTATED AS THE FRAME DISINTEGRATES UPON CONTACT. THIS IS A VERY WELL KNOWN PROBLEM, AND I AM CURIOUS WHY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS NOT FORCED GM TO RECALL THESE VEHICLES LIKE TOYOTA WAS FORCED TO DO WITH THEIR IDENTICAL SITUATION. DO YOUR JOBS, AND HOLD THESE CORPORATIONS ACCOUNTABLE FOR CHEAP WORKMANSHIP.

A NORMAL MECHANIC SHOP WOULDN'T FIX IT, BECAUSE IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE, SO TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE CHEVROLET DEALER, WHO CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM, AND HAD TO REPLACE THE WIRING HARNESS IN THAT DOOR.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-09
- VIN: 1GCDT196848
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: FRAME HAS RUSTED OUT TO THE POINT THAT IT IS UNREPAIRABLE, VEHICLE HAS 92000 MILES GOOD CONDITION EVERYWHERE ELSE. THIS IS QUITE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH COLORADOS. IT WILL NOT PASS SAFETY STANDARDS, QUITE HONESTLY IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING WITH THESE VEHICLES. IT SEEMS ODD THAT TOYOTA WAS FORCED TO REPLACE FRAMES DUE TO POOR QUALITY AND RUST ISSUES YET THESE COLORADOS ARE JUST AS BAD.

IT IS VERY UNSETTLING KNOWING EVEN IF I DONT DRIVE THIS TRUCK AGAIN ANOTHER CHEVY COLORADO ON THE HIGHWAY COULD RIP IN 2 PEICES CAUSING AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE FAULTY FRAME ON THESE TRUCKS. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS ISSUE THAT CHEVY WILL NOT ADDRESS. WHEN MY FRAME BROKE INTO 2 PIECES INWARD DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THE BED CAME FREE ON THE DRIVER SIDE AND SMASHED IN THE BACK CORNER OF MY CAB. LUCKILY I WAS NOT ON THE HIGH WAY BECAUSE IF I WAS IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I HOPE CHEVY MAKES RIGHT BY THIS.

2004 Chevrolet Colorado recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: CHILD SEAT
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
- Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. IN THE INTERIM, OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE CAN OBTAIN A FREE REPAIR, HOWEVER THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN WHEN THE NEW DESIGN PART BECOMES AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS MAY EXPERIENCE THE PERMANENT LOSS OF BRAKE LAMP FUNCTION OR BRAKE LAMPS THAT ARE ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES. THE CENTER HIGH-MOUNTED STOP LAMP (CHMSL) IS AFFECTED IN BOTH INSTANCES. ALSO, IF EQUIPPED, THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL BECOME INOPERATIVE. ANY TRAILER BRAKE LAMPS WHICH ARE CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMP WIRING WILL MIMIC THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMPS WHEN EITHER CONDITION OCCURS.
- Consequence: A FOLLOWING DRIVER MAY NOT KNOW WHEN THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN APPLIED, AND A REAR-END CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 5, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 OR ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727.

I had to let my S10 go due to financial reasons, but I absolutely loved the truck. I was pleasantly surprised by the Colorado, as it has proven to be just as good, if not better. The 2.8 engine provides great mileage and power, and the sound system is the best I have heard in a stock vehicle so far.
-
Hi there! I've been driving trucks for a while now. I used to drive a standard Isuzu with no comfort options. However, I recently got my Colorado almost fully loaded (all except the leather and the Onstar). Now, instead of dreading the drive to work, I absolutely love it! This truck is comfortable yet rugged, sporty yet serious, and generally a damn good truck. The 4x4 with the rear wheel differential is excellent in snow, ice, and heavy off-roading - a must-have for anyone in Canada. I did a lot of investigating before I bought this truck, and I can tell you that compared to this truck, the Ranger, Dakota, or even the Toyota Tundra seem like WWII technology.
-
I have the Z-85 extended cab. It's a great truck! The I-5 cylinder with 220 hp is really gutsy. If you're looking for a mid-size truck, this is the one for you. As you can see, I love everything about this truck. The S-10 is no match for this one. This is a real cruiser. Check out my ratings!
-
The Z71 crew cab package is a great choice! Although the box could have been a little longer, I don't need to haul big loads anymore. I was pleasantly surprised by the power and acceleration, and the gas mileage is better than I expected. The transmission is smooth and effortless, unlike that of a Ford Ranger. The stiffer frame also gives it a smooth feel over rough roadways. The interior is very roomy and comfortable. Thanks, Chevy!

I'm so glad I ended up with a crew cab Colorado, even though I wasn't initially sold on the smaller bed. Since having a baby, it's been the perfect fit for my family and all of our hauling needs. Although we did have some trouble with the traction control early on, the dealership was very helpful in resolving the issue and the truck has been running smoothly ever since. With its 220 hp 5 cyl and ZQ8 package, this truck has a really sporty feel and is a blast to drive!

I purchased this vehicle in April and unfortunately, it has been in the shop three times since then. The first time was due to mold in the A/C, the second time was due to water damage from a defective door, and the third time was for a transmission replacement. As someone who has owned many Chevy vehicles, I must say that I am quite dissatisfied with the Colorado Truck. However, I must admit that it is a fun truck to drive when it is not in the shop for repairs. It is also quite fuel-efficient for a truck. Overall, I would advise caution when considering purchasing this truck until all of the issues have been resolved.

You've already driven 2,400 miles and unfortunately have had to go back to the shop for a second time. It seems like the dealer is having trouble fixing the alignment. Additionally, you've noticed that the interior feels a bit cheap and the rear headrests are blocking your rearview. As for the XM radio, you don't feel like it's worth paying extra for it as it hasn't met your expectations.

I have always been a loyal customer of GM products and have had positive experiences in the past. However, I am disappointed with my recent purchase. The fuel efficiency is lower than expected at 15 mpg, while my full-size truck and Tahoe get 21 mpg. Additionally, the towing capacity is comparable to my wife's Escape. I have also experienced some issues with the vehicle, such as a leaking roof, damaged headliners and carpet, and easily breakable plastic parts. The front turn signals have also been prone to corrosion and require frequent cleaning. Despite my disappointment, I have not mistreated the vehicle in any way.

I noticed that the inline 5 engine option is not listed in the pull-down menu. Additionally, the seats are quite uncomfortable and there is a high level of engine noise in the cab. The interior features also appear to be of a cheaper quality and the radio speakers are not very good.

This truck has been in the shop three times in the past two months for transmission repairs, yet the issue remains unresolved. It is unfortunate that GM representatives have not been helpful in addressing safety concerns. However, it is important to prioritize safety when considering purchasing a vehicle. It may be worth exploring other truck options that offer better quality and value for the price.
