2010 Chevrolet Colorado problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2010 Chevrolet Colorado problems

The Chevrolet Colorado, introduced in 2003, is known for its efficiency and off-roading capabilities. However, its reliability has been questioned, with some model years experiencing more problems than others. This article will focus on the 2010 Chevrolet Colorado and its common problems based on complaints from owners.

  • AC Blower Issues: One of the most common issues with the 2010 Chevrolet Colorado is an underperforming A/C blower unit, which is prevalent in models with nearly 90,000 miles.
  • Engine Misfires: Engine misfires are a regular annoyance for some 2010 Chevrolet Colorado owners. These misfires can occur due to worn-out valve seals or damaged or worn-out spark plugs, and they can cause the engine to stall intermittently. This issue is especially prevalent in the 2019 release but can also affect the 2010 model.
  • Transmission Problems: The 2010 Chevrolet Colorado has been known to experience excessive vibrating, jerking, and shuddering at certain speeds, typically beginning around 25 mph and extending to 80 mph. These uncomfortable motions are highly noticeable when downshifting and accelerating. Removing and replacing the transmission fluid or installing a new torque converter may solve this issue.
  • Fuel Gauge Inconsistencies: Colorado trucks may suffer from inconsistent fuel gauges, leading vehicles to run out of gas rapidly and preventing drivers from knowing how much fuel they have. When this happens, it's usually because the fuel tank's level sensor is malfunctioning. This problem has become extremely common within 2004 to 2012 Colorado models that have over 150,000 miles. To fix it, you can replace individual components on or completely swap out your fuel pump assembly.
  • Brake Problems: Colorado models have long had issues with their brakes, dating back to some of the earliest releases in the line. Loud squealing, grinding, ABS malfunctions, and unresponsive brakes have been at the forefront of headaches affecting these vehicles. Spongy and soft brakes are common across numerous Colorado releases, requiring drivers to use repetitive pumping to stop and drastically increasing stopping distance.

These are some of the most common problems reported by 2010 Chevrolet Colorado owners. If you own this vehicle and are experiencing any of these issues, it is essential to address them promptly to ensure your safety and the longevity of your vehicle.

2010 Chevrolet Colorado recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2010 Chevrolet Colorado.

2012-12-19
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
  • Summary: General Motors is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon vehicles manufactured from November 9, 2009, through August 28, 2012, for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 113, "Hood Latch System." The hood may be missing the secondary hood latch.
  • Consequence: If the primary hood latch is not engaged, the hood could open unexpectedly. During vehicle operation, this could obstruct the view of the driver and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners and instruct them to inspect their vehicle for the presence of a secondary hood latch. Dealers will replace the hood on any affected vehicles, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC at 1-866-996-9463.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: CHILD SEAT
  • Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
  • Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Negative 2010 Chevrolet Colorado car reviews

Hello! I noticed that you recently traded in your 15-year-old S-10 for the cash for clunker deal. The truck seems nice, but I understand that the front seats may not be up to your standards. Additionally, the floor pan may be a bit higher than what you're used to, making it feel like you're sitting in a little kid's chair. If you plan on keeping it for a while, you may want to consider yanking the bed liner out, as it's starting to leave a gouge in the paint on the tailgate and front wall lip. On the bright side, the truck is very roomy both in the front and rear, and has plenty of power. It's interesting to note that you received $3500 for your S-10 because the gas mileage on the Colorado was supposed to be better, even though you consistently got 20 mpg with the S-10 and only get maybe 18 with the Colorado. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Just picked up vehicle today---to early to rate anything. There are 3 things I would suggest be changed. Firstly, the rubber floor mats are too slick and not very useful. Secondly, the steering wheel needs to be covered as it is also too slick. Lastly, the CD drawer needs a complete revision as it is not well designed and you almost need to stop the vehicle to return one to the holder. I hope this feedback is helpful. Best regards, Irv.

I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle. While it may be suitable for short commutes without inclement weather, it can be difficult to hold a phone conversation due to the high level of interior noise. Additionally, the gas mileage is poor, only achieving 19mph with the inline 5cyl, and the ride can be rough with uncomfortable seats. It is worth noting that the vehicle was obtained at no cost, but the quality does not justify the high price. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Chevy required a bail-out.

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with my truck, which I purchased back in February 2010 (although I was told it would arrive in 6-8 weeks, it actually arrived in 17 weeks). Overall, I really love the truck's styling and comfort. However, I have had a few issues with it, including having to replace the rear spring bushings, wiper transmission, wiper switch, and front windshield re-sealed. Unfortunately, I still have a

  1. Oral Koch 2024-11-14

Congratulations on your new Colorado! It's always tough to say goodbye to a reliable vehicle, but it's great that you were able to find it a good home. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the ride, styling, and comfort of your new Colorado. It's great that it appears to be a scaled down version of the Silverado. With the 4 cylinder engine and automatic transmission, it sounds like you have a good balance of power and acceleration. And getting about 22 mpg is pretty impressive! It's no wonder you've received numerous compliments about your new vehicle. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  2. Bennett Hoeger 2024-11-09

I purchased this truck used a few years ago with 68k miles on it. Since then, I have driven it for 40k miles and have not experienced any issues whatsoever. Interestingly, everyone who has ridden in the truck seems to prefer the backseat, including my wife who is 6'0

  3. Demetrius Yundt 2024-09-02

Congratulations on your new Colorado! It's great to hear that you are a repeat owner and that you are enjoying the new Crew Cab. The improvements that Chevy made for '09, such as the smoother brakes and the stylish body color trim with chrome accents, really make a difference. It's also impressive that your old truck was so reliable and economical. With 21 mpg in everyday driving and 27 on trips, it's no wonder you would recommend this truck without hesitation. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  4. Alvah Hermann 2024-08-21

No dislikes to report. You'll be pleased to know that this vehicle has good gas mileage with plenty of power. Additionally, it rides and drives better than expected for a 4x4.

  5. Jaeden Keeling 2024-07-13

Okay, so it shows 4cyl, but I actually have a 2009 Chevy Colorado SS with an 8cyl, 5.3 engine, which is very rare! I've had a blast driving it, especially with the leather power seats and awesome bass. It drives okay, and would probably be even better if it were newer. The only downside to the truck is that it's very low to the ground and not great on gas.
