2007 Chevrolet Colorado problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2007 Chevrolet Colorado problems

The Chevrolet Colorado, produced from 2004 to 2012, has been a popular choice for many vehicle enthusiasts and owners. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to common problems that can impact its performance and longevity. Here are some of the most common Chevrolet Colorado problems based on complaints from owners:

  • Electrical Problems: Electrical problems can affect any vehicle, including the Chevy Colorado. These issues can manifest as malfunctioning power windows, door locks, or dashboard lights. Often, electrical problems stem from faulty wiring or sensor failures. To address electrical problems effectively, consult an expert technician who can diagnose and resolve the issues.
  • Suspension and Steering Concerns: A comfortable and controlled ride is essential for any vehicle. Chevy Colorado owners have reported suspension and steering concerns that can disrupt this experience. These issues may include unusual noises when turning, a bumpy ride, or uneven tire wear. Addressing these problems promptly is essential for improving your vehicle's performance and enhancing safety on the road.
  • Brake Problems: Brake problems are a critical safety concern for any vehicle owner. Chevy Colorado owners have reported issues such as squeaky brakes, decreased brake effectiveness, or brake pedal pulsation. Maintaining your vehicle's brakes is of utmost importance to ensure your safety on the road. Regular brake inspections and maintenance are essential to prevent accidents and save you from expensive repairs in the long run.
  • Engine Complaints: Engine complaints, such as engine stall and oil leaks, have been reported by Chevy Colorado owners around 100,000 miles. Regular vehicle inspections and maintenance can help identify potential engine issues before they become major headaches.
  • Faulty Fuel Level Sensor: Many drivers reported erratic and inaccurate readings with their fuel gauges due to the malfunctioning fuel level sensor, which needs to be replaced.
  • Loss of Power Steering: This issue was more pronounced with the 2015 version, where drivers saw the service power steering or StabiliTrak warning lights coming on before losing their power steering control.
  • Hidden Drivetrain Control: Some Chevy Colorado owners have complained about the hidden drivetrain control, which can't be seen while driving, and the lack of a panel light indicating your driving mode.
  • Air Conditioning Blower: 433 people reported that the air conditioning blower did not work correctly because of a failed resistor, the most widespread issue mentioned.
  • CD Player Failure: Reports state that the CDs either wouldn't play or wouldn't eject, with the problem being most frequent in model years 2004-2008 and 2011-2012.

Understanding these common Chevrolet Colorado problems can help owners maintain their vehicles more effectively, ensuring a smoother and safer driving experience. Regular maintenance, inspections, and timely repairs are crucial for addressing these issues and ensuring the longevity of your Chevy Colorado.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-07-22
  • VIN: 1GCCS13E578
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE PASSLOCK ANTI-THEFT DEVICE KEEPS MY VEHICLE FROM STARTING THINKING IT'S BEING STOLEN.. DISABLING THE FUEL PUMP.. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND HAS ALSO MADE ME LATE FOR WORK SEVERAL TIMES AND STRANDED. IT STARTED OCCURRING THIS YEAR JULY 22, 2017 WITH NO PRIOR INCIDENTS. IT'S OCCURRING ON A REGULAR INTERVAL AND IT'S GETTING TO THE POINT THAT I CANT RELY ON MY VEHICLE TO START AS NORMAL. PLEASE LET THERE BE A RECALL ON GETTING THE MANUFACTURER GENERAL MOTORS TO FIX THIS ON MY COLORADO AS IT'S THE ONLY FAULT ON THIS VEHICLE. THE FAULTY PASSLOCK SYSTEMS SHOULD BE A RECALLED ITEM SINCE IT WILL DISABLE THE FUEL PUMP AND HAVING TO WAIT 10 MINUTES FOR THE THE SYSTEM TO RESET AT UNKNOWN OR UNSAFE PLACES. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER WITH TWO KIDS AND I RELY ON MY VEHICLE TO COMMUTE TO AND FROM SCHOOL AND WORK. LUCKILY THE INCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED AT WORK, AT HOME, AT WALMART PARKING LOT.. BUT WHO KNOWS WHEN THE SYSTEM DECIDED AS IT GETS WORST. MY SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD SON HAS TAKEN THE VEHICLE OUT AND I'M ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT THIS SAFETY DUE TO THIS FAULTY PASSLOCK ANTI-THEFT DEVICE. THE VEHICLE HAS 181,450 MILES, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS SHOW ON DASH.. OTHER THAN THIS ISSUE.. IT'S THE ONLY REASON THE VEHICLE IS MOSTLY PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY.. ONLY MYSELF WILL TAKE THE DRIVE IT FOR SHORT DISTANCES. I WISH AND HOPE TO HAVE THE MANUFACTURER RENDER A NEEDED RECALL ON THIS PASSLOCK ANTI-THEFT DEVICE SYSTEM... .UPDATED 10/04/17 *BF

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-12
  • VIN: 1GCDT13E478
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON MAY 6, 2017, OUR 2007 CHEVROLET COLORADO WAS DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 400 MILES WITH SEVERAL STOPS AND TURNED OFF WITH NO PROBLEMS. ONCE WE ARRIVED AT DESTINATION, SAID VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN DRIVEWAY OF RELATIVE'S HOME. LAPSE TIME OF ABOUT AN HOUR, THEN THE TRUCK WOULD NOT START. NOTHING ELECTRICAL WORKED. AFTER LEAVING THE TRUCK OVERNIGHT, THE NEXT MORNING THE TRUCK STARTED UP AND RAN AS IF NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. WE RETURNED THE 400 MILES HOME WITHOUT INCIDENT. A MONTH LATER, (6/12/17) THE TRUCK WAS DRIVEN ABOUT 5 MILES, PARKED, TURNED OFF AT A GROCERY STORE. APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES OF SHOPPING, RETURNED TO TRUCK AND IT WOULD NOT START. HAD TO LEAVE IT THERE AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL START IN THE MORNING. I AM DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT COMPLAINTS I HAVE ENCOUNTERED ON SEVERAL WEBSITES ABOUT THESE VEHICLES. IT APPEARS THAT THIS IN NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM WITH THE CHEVROLET COLORADO. IT ALSO APPEARS AS IF NO PROBLEM HAS BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED BY CHEVROLET NOR A RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH I CAN FIND NO DEFINITIVE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. SURELY CHEVROLET COULD AT LEAST GIVE US A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM AS IT HAS CAUSED ALL KINDS OF INCONVENIENT SITUATIONS AND LIFE THREATENING INCIDENTS WHEN THE TRUCK DECIDES TO QUIT RUNNING AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS.

2007 Chevrolet Colorado recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2007 Chevrolet Colorado.

2010-11-18
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: CHILD SEAT
  • Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
  • Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
2009-07-29
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. IN THE INTERIM, OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE CAN OBTAIN A FREE REPAIR, HOWEVER THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN WHEN THE NEW DESIGN PART BECOMES AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
2006-08-11
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: WHEELS:RIM
  • Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND TRUCKS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 110, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS." THESE VEHICLES HAVE AN INCOMPLETE TIRE RIM DESIGNATION ON THE CERTIFICATION/TIRE LABEL LOCATED ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR EDGE. IN ADDITION, THE LABEL MAY ALSO BE MISSING THE TIRE LOAD RATING ON THE LABEL. ALTHOUGH THIS INFORMATION IS NOT REQUIRED BY THE STANDARD, IF A TIRE OF A LESSER LOAD RATING IS INSTALLED, THE TIRE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SUSTAIN THE LOADS ENCOUNTERED DURING USE.
  • Consequence: IF A CUSTOMER REPLACES A WHEEL AND ONLY RELIES ON THE RIM SIZE DESIGNATION THAT IS INDICATED ON THE LABEL, A WHEEL THAT IS OF A DIFFERENT RIM CONTOUR DESIGNATION MAY BE INSTALLED. IT MAY BE DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE TO MOUNT THE TIRE ON A WHEEL WITH THE WRONG CONTOUR. IF THE TIRE IS MOUNTED ON THE WHEEL WITH THE WRONG CONTOUR, THE WHEEL AND TIRE MAY NOT PERFORM AS INTENDED, WHICH COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: A LABEL THAT WILL CORRECT THE LABEL ORIGINALLY INSTALLED WILL BE MAILED TO CONSUMERS ALONG WITH INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. THE CUSTOMER WILL HAVE THE OPTION FOR DEALERS TO INSTALL THE LABEL. THE RECALL BEGAON ON NOVEMBER 7, 2006. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2239, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, AND GMC TRUCKS AT 1-866-996-9463.

Negative 2007 Chevrolet Colorado car reviews

  1. Reuben Reynolds 2024-11-26

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been having with your truck. It must be frustrating to have the reduced power and check engine light come on so frequently. It sounds like you've been doing everything you can to get it resolved, but unfortunately, it still won't start. I hope the dealership can help you out tomorrow and get it towed to the shop. It's definitely not what you expect from a truck that's only a year old. Hang in there and hopefully, they can get it fixed soon.

I've owned this model for a year now and so far, I haven't encountered any issues. In fact, I find it to be an improvement over the S-10. However, there are some gas issues that I've noticed. Specifically, using 87 octane can cause the engine to be stubborn or buck, but this can be easily resolved by using 89 octane instead. On the other hand, I'm quite disappointed with the tires. They're Generals made in Mexico and they're absolute junk! It would be great if Chevy Division could do something about this. Unfortunately, going the warranty route won't help since the replacements will likely be of the same poor quality. To add to that, three out of the four tires have bumps on them. Lastly, I think the hand-brake release could be better engineered since I often have to pull on it multiple times to get it to release.

This is about my parents who are aged 74-76. My mom had a few issues with her car, like acid rain drops that wouldn't come off. During one of her visits to the shop, she mentioned that the 5-speed wasn't going into reverse. The response she received was two pieces of paper that stated that a customer can expect a blocked reverse shift 10 in 50 attempts (1 in 5). Engineering has determined that this condition is an inherent characteristic (06-07) and should be considered normal. They provided a procedure for getting it into reverse: 1) shift into 1st gear, 2) move the vehicle forward, 3) stop and shift to reverse. This means that you need to go into traffic to get it to reverse. However, I drive a stick and it (Colorado) doesn't work.

Hi there! I have a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado and I've been having some trouble with it lately. The alarm keeps going off for no reason, and the driver's window is messed up. It's a shame because I don't drive it very often and it only has 11587 miles on it. I recently had to replace the sensor which cost me $161. I've always been a Chevy person, but maybe it's time to explore other options. What do you think?

Do you remember the cardboard and plastic Vega or Pinto from the 70s? Well, they are back as the Chevy Colorado. I have the 4-door model. Unfortunately, not even 3 months after purchasing it, a bird dropping ate through the clearcoating and the paint, despite the magic coating the dealership sold me. I was disappointed to find that the warranty wasn't worth the paper it was written on. This experience has left me feeling like this will be the last Chevy anyone in my family will ever own.

I have been very satisfied with my Colorado, despite some issues with the service department. Unfortunately, they created more problems than the truck would normally have. However, I still wouldn't trade it for any other truck. I get an average of 26.9 to 28.6 mpg, depending on how I drive. I do a lot of hauling with it and have even pulled my 10' trailer with no problems. Going up hills, it has more power than I expected, which is especially important here in West Virginia where we have a lot of hills. I would highly recommend the Colorado to anyone looking for a small economy truck. Just be careful with the tires, as mine were dry rotted and needed to be replaced after only 15,000 miles. Overall, I've had a great experience with my Colorado and would definitely recommend it to others!

Hi there! We recently purchased this vehicle to replace one of our Security fleet Chevy Cavaliers. We've been really impressed with its excellent acceleration and comfortable driving experience. It's been great for both city and highway driving, with a fuel mileage of nearly 30 MPG. We even used it to pull a loaded 8' trailer and hardly noticed any difference, although the fuel mileage did drop to 24 MPG on the highway. As a security vehicle, we've engaged in high speed chases with many different vehicles, and we're happy to report that the Colorado hasn't been out-run or out-performed yet!

My first car ever bought was amazing! It took me on many 5-hour trips to Mammoth Mountain and was also my trusty commuter car. I loved how roomy it was and how easily it hit speeds I shouldn't have been driving. One of my favourite things about it was that I could fit up to 6 people in there, which I did often. I still regret trading it in for a Jetta... the Jetta just doesn't compare to this amazing truck!

For the price, it sounds like you've got a great deal! It's easy to drive, park, and store in the garage. While the fuel economy on the 5 cyl is debatable, it does offer more power than the 4 cyl. It would be great to see at least 30 mpg in real gas mileage, not just EPA estimates.

  5. Hyman Koss 2024-10-06

After 3 months, I'm really happy with my new Colorado! I got the ext cab model with a 4 cyl engine, RWD, and auto trans. I use it for commuting (mix of country and city roads) and for light hauling. Most of the time, I'm alone in the truck. For the way I use the truck, it works really well. It's super economical (19-20 mpg), has enough room to carry my stuff, and my family can ride along when they need to. The truck is really comfortable and very well equipped for what I paid ($16K). The only issue I've had is a loose spot in the upholstery, but it was fixed under warranty. It may not be the most exciting or refined truck out there, but if you're looking for an economical, reliable everyday truck, this is definitely a good one!
