The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2009 Chevrolet Colorado.

- Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
- Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. IN THE INTERIM, OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE CAN OBTAIN A FREE REPAIR, HOWEVER THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN WHEN THE NEW DESIGN PART BECOMES AVAILABLE. THE FUEL SYSTEM CONTROL MODULES MAY HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH AN ADHESIVE SEPARATION OF THE ROOM TEMPERATURE VULCANIZING (RTV) SEAL BETWEEN THE SEAL AND THE HOUSING MAY ALLOW WATER TO SEEP INTO THE MODULE.
- Consequence: WATER IN THE MODULE COULD CAUSE A SHORT OR OPEN CIRCUIT, ILLUMINATION OF THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LAMP, SETTING OF DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES OR THE ENGINE MAY BE HARD TO START, MAY NOT START OR MAY STALL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

I was initially disappointed with the gas mileage and the 4WD, but my opinion changed during a trip into the desert. When the pavement ran out and the road became a mass of mud and water due to two days of rain, I put the truck into 4WD low and powered through with ease. We drove about a mile until we reached a road, and although it was a bit hairy, we had fun and made it without any issues. This truck is like a billy goat and I would not hesitate to take it 4 wheeling any time.

The truck has a lot of torque and gets pretty decent gas mileage. I put a K&N cold air intake and performance catback and it increased the power and fuel economy even more. I am in the military and use my truck to go home on leave. Gets me there without spending too much on gas. I love the style of it, looks sporty. The interior is roomy for passengers or cargo. It hauls my fourwheeler almost like it's not there.

I like the truck overall. The initial problem with the bad Onstar module that was draining the battery was fixed under warranty. Although the gas mileage could be better, I have been averaging 20.5 mpg combined lately, which is much better than the F150 this truck replaced. The styling is decent and the ride is very good. While the fit and finish of the exterior could be better, the four-wheel drive with locking differential was a big plus during our last New England winter.

I'm so glad I decided to switch to a Chevy! I had been driving a new Mazda B4000 (Ranger), but it just wasn't cutting it. This truck is amazing - it drives like a dream, feels as comfortable as a car, and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2008 Chevrolet Colorado. While I did purchase it used from the dealer with 36,000 miles and unfortunately did not opt for the extended warranty, I did encounter some issues with cold start hesitations and the battery dying every 4 months. Despite spending quite a bit of money at the dealership to fix these issues, they unfortunately persisted. Additionally, I had a couple of problems with the A/C not working properly. The last straw was when the battery died while my pregnant wife was driving the truck and I was out of town. However, I have since switched to a Toyota and have been much happier with it. Just wanted to share my experience with you. Take care!

I purchased my Colorado in April with hopes of good fuel economy. The salesmen were very helpful, but unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with the truck. For example, it only gets 19 miles per gallon on the highway, even when traveling 200 miles north with the wind. Additionally, the brakes do not work well after the truck has been parked for more than 4 hours, and it lacks power. As a family truck, I do not find it reliable. The poor service at the dealership where I purchased the truck is also a concern. The personnel only checked the truck for less than 5 minutes and told me that the computer did not register any issues. When I brought up the brake problem, the manager simply said it was brake dust. Despite these issues, I appreciate the help of the salesmen during the purchase process.

I really enjoy driving this vehicle, despite the lack of features such as an emergency brake release that is a bit cheap and comes off easily, non-adjustable seats, and some issues with the starter experiencing turn over problems. Although I had to take it to the dealership to have the squirrel cage on the a/c replaced (as the original one squealed when on), the fuel economy is good for a truck, and it is incredibly fun to drive - sporty in one word! This vehicle is definitely perfect for a younger driver looking to save on insurance and gas, who doesn't mind working out the bugs with the dealership. OnStar is also great. Overall, it's a great buy that delivers power when demanded. Although I would have preferred a more rugged interior and at least an adjustable driver seat, it's still a fantastic vehicle.

As a loyal Chevy customer for 35 years, I am disappointed with the reliability of my 2008 truck. Despite numerous visits to the dealer, the issue of it not starting after sitting for a few days persists. This has caused me concern about taking it on out of town trips. I believe that a vehicle from 2008 should be more dependable than previous models.
