Chevrolet Colorado problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Chevrolet Colorado 2016
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-29
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-29
  • VIN: 1GCGTDE31G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Power steering failure occurred while driving. This makes the truck very hard to turn. A warning message appears in the info screen “power steering assist failure” when the power steering failure happens. The only fix is to stop the truck, turn off the truck, open the drivers door, close the drivers door, and then restart the truck. The first occurrence of this failure was in July 2024. It has happened many times since: at slow and high speed, wet and dry conditions, on bumpy roads and smooth pavement. There does not seem to be a specific condition which triggers this event. Today, the power steering went out right as I was turning right. This caused me to turn very wide and forced me into the opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully, this did not cause an accident, however, the potential for an accident due to this failure is very high. A similar issue has been identified in the 2015 model year of this truck and there is an open recall for that model year but not this one. I believe the included model year list should be extended to include the 2016 model year at minimum.

Latest negative Chevrolet Colorado car reviews

  1. Norval Heathcote 2025-08-24

    Vehicle year: 2018

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my truck. Unfortunately, I had to take it to the shop to replace/repair the torque converter. At first, I thought I was hearing some engine miss and road noise, but then I noticed that the truck was vibrating badly when under slow acceleration. The problem got worse quickly, and I was worried. Interestingly, there was another person in the shop at the same time with a 2017 Colorado with similar issues. The dealer GM said they had the problem with mostly the Silverado, and they were working on it. They gave me a Silverado loaner to drive while repairing my truck, but it seems to have the same issue. I hope they can fix it soon. This is the first new vehicle of many in my 70 years that I had a problem with, but I'm still hopeful. If the problem is fixed and no others occur, I'll probably keep the truck. I basically like it. However, if there are any further issues, I'll consider trading it for the Ford Ranger when it comes on sale in the states. I had two Rangers before, and I loved them both. Thanks for listening!

  2. Blair Franecki 2025-08-18

    Vehicle year: 2004

Hi there! I bought this truck back in 2005 and I've had some issues with it. There were some electrical problems with the door locks and power windows, but they seemed to fix themselves after a few weeks to a month. The transmission can be a bit hit and miss, and sometimes it takes a while to shift gears even with the pedal all the way to the floor. I've had to replace two parking brakes before hitting 50K miles, and I've had a couple of instances where the brakes didn't work as expected. Unfortunately, the 4WD HI setting doesn't seem to work even after the dealer tried to fix it. I've also experienced some stalling problems, even at highway speeds. Lastly, the hood has come loose a few times. Overall, it's been a bit of a bumpy ride, but I'm hoping to get it sorted soon!

  3. Jamey Smitham 2025-08-17

    Vehicle year: 2022

According to their assessment, they have been unable to replicate the transmission shifting issue, so it remains unresolved. While there are some design flaws and cost-cutting measures that are concerning, such as the absence of a driver's side grab handle and low seat belt clips, there are also some positive aspects to the vehicle, such as the power driver seat. The gas mileage for the 4 cylinder is still disappointingly low, and the transmission downshift can be odd at times, resulting in a clunk forward or a weird quiver from the rear end. The paint chips fairly easily, so it is recommended to install a deflector on the hood. The A/C is not as strong as expected for a new vehicle. The carpet on the floor is not of the highest quality, and it tends to shed hairballs frequently. The vehicle lacks full-sized wheel well liners and protective skid plates, which are standard on most vehicles. Recovery hooks on the front are also absent, which is standard in many vehicles. Despite these issues, the cruise control works fine, and the interior storage space, while limited, is still functional. Overall, the vehicle has its pros and cons, and it is up to the individual to decide if it is the right fit for them.Manual mirrors can be difficult to adjust while driving, which can be a safety concern. It would be great if power mirrors were standard for trucks, as they would make it easier to adjust the passenger side mirror.

I usually prefer Toyota vehicles, but when I was looking for a mid-size truck, I found that the Colorado had a quieter and smoother ride, and I liked the interior design more. However, I was not a fan of the Tacoma's long hood. Although I wanted a 2-wheel drive, the dealer only had 4-wheel drives in stock. We test drove a pretty silver 4-door model and decided to purchase it. After a week, we noticed two problems: a vibration while driving over 40mph and a 'clunk' in the rear end when coming to a stop. We took the truck back to the dealer, and they replaced the torque converter, which fixed the vibration. However, the 'clunk' was still there. We took the truck back to the service department, and they tried to fix the issue by resurfacing the rear brakes and greasing the leaf springs, but the 'clunk' persisted. After researching the issue, we found out that the 'clunking' was normal due to gear lash in the differential, transfer case, and transmission. Although this was frustrating, we learned that this was not a problem with 2-wheel drive Colorados. After a couple of months of dealing with the 'clunking,' we decided to trade the truck in for a Toyota vehicle.I had a bad experience with a Chevrolet Colorado and I don't think I will be buying another Chevrolet vehicle again. I have also noticed that all Chevrolet 4WD vehicles seem to experience a 'kachunk' in the drivetrain when stopping and/or starting. I am not sure if this is a typical experience with all 4WD vehicles, but I have ridden in Silverados, Tahoes, and even GMC Yukons with 4 wheel drive, and they all have varying degrees of this clunk, which can be quite aggravating and make you feel like the rear end is about to fall out. In my opinion, this is unacceptable whether it's considered normal or not.

The truck is unfortunately back in the repair shop again due to the air conditioner freezing up. In Georgia, air conditioning is a must-have, so this is quite inconvenient. We've had the truck for 8 months and had the same issue last year. Although parts were replaced and the issue was thought to be resolved, we are experiencing the same problem this season. We've also noticed that the vehicle shudders when accelerating while already moving, which is a common issue among other drivers. Additionally, we are not satisfied with the gas mileage of the small truck with a 6-cylinder engine. We've considered trading it in for a full-sized truck, but the best offer we received was $6,000 less than what we paid. If you're looking for a small truck, the interior and features are nice, but if you want performance, it's best to go big. We were disappointed with the reliability of this vehicle. UPDATE: We decided to get rid of this vehicle due to its unreliability.

So glad to hear that everything is going well! I noticed that you decided to go with the Chevy instead of the Toyota. It sounds like you're really enjoying the quiet ride and great handling, which is fantastic! I'm also happy to hear that you're getting great gas mileage, with your best MPG being 25.6 for a 300 mile trip. Keep up the good work!

I recently purchased a 2016 Z71 4WD black Trail Boss and I'm absolutely loving it! The trail boss package accessories, such as the off road sport bar and LED off road lights on top, are fantastic. The black painted wheels and aggressive all terrain tires really make heads turn. I opted for all the options, including heated seats, navigation, Bose 7 speaker system, and spray in bed liner, and I couldn't be happier. The technology in this truck is amazing, especially the apple car play feature that allows me to reflect my iOS device onto the in-dash display. The rear view camera is also great with its line projections that show you where you're going to end up as you turn the wheel. The only downside is that it takes a little long to switch gears when I lay on the gas, but I'm glad it has the option for manual gear switching. I've been averaging 17MPG over the course of 1,000 miles, but I'm a pretty aggressive driver so others may get better gas consumption rates. Overall, I'm thrilled with my purchase and don't regret trading in my 2012 TRD Tacoma one bit. I can't give an accurate report on reliability or cost of ownership yet as I've only had it for a little less than a month. If you're considering this truck, I highly recommend going for the v6 or turbo diesel options instead of the 4 cylinder.

We purchased this 4 WD crew cab pick-up on March 17th, 2008 and have been putting it through its paces ever since. To make it more functional, we added running boards and a Leer cap. Since my elderly Dad lives with us, we needed the crew cab. As an active country family, we use it to haul landscaping and building materials, as well as other items for the country church we belong to. Recently, we drove it 1600 miles from NYS to Sanibel Island, FL and it performed exceptionally well. This truck is a great combination of economy, utility, passenger hauling, and comfort. We were able to get 20 mpg on the highway. Throughout the spring, we used it to haul green waste to the town transfer station, lumber to build raised vegetable garden beds, and loads of rotted horse manure to add to those beds. We are extremely satisfied with our decision.

A lot more insulation and so much quieter than a Toyota. Your 2019 CCSB 4x4 sounds like a great fit for you since you don't do a lot of towing/hauling. It's great to hear that the power train has been flawless and that you love the blindspot mirror and lack of nanny technology. It's also reassuring to know that after 16k miles, you haven't experienced any issues or problems. Enjoy your truck, especially during pothole season!

This truck exceeded my expectations! It's well-built, comfortable, and has a powerful V6 engine with over 300 HP. I love all the options it has and haven't found anything I don't like about it. If I ever need to buy another truck, I wouldn't hesitate to choose this one again. I highly recommend taking it for a test drive to see for yourself!
