They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

After investigation on the internet this is a massive problem with this model vehicle and Chevy has been well aware of it for years. A few months ago I had the same problem with them air conditioner compressor. There were no air conditioner compressors available anywhere in the country for my four and a half year old vehicle.

- Summary: Power steering failure occurred while driving. This makes the truck very hard to turn. A warning message appears in the info screen “power steering assist failure” when the power steering failure happens. The only fix is to stop the truck, turn off the truck, open the drivers door, close the drivers door, and then restart the truck. The first occurrence of this failure was in July 2024. It has happened many times since: at slow and high speed, wet and dry conditions, on bumpy roads and smooth pavement. There does not seem to be a specific condition which triggers this event. Today, the power steering went out right as I was turning right. This caused me to turn very wide and forced me into the opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully, this did not cause an accident, however, the potential for an accident due to this failure is very high. A similar issue has been identified in the 2015 model year of this truck and there is an open recall for that model year but not this one. I believe the included model year list should be extended to include the 2016 model year at minimum.

I recently purchased a 2019 Colorado W/T edition with 4x4, 3.6L V6, and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The dealer added some great options that made it feel like an L/T edition, such as colored bumpers and mirrors, a rearview camera, the Light Touch tailgate, Weather Guard floor mats, and a locking rear differential. These additions made it a great value for me, as I saved around $2,500 compared to buying an L/T edition. The only thing missing was the 8-inch Infotainment system, which I didn't really need since I prefer to use my phone for navigation and other features. The ride in this truck is fantastic, it feels more like a car than a truck, but still has that high driving position that truck drivers love. The fuel mileage is impressive, averaging 28-28.5 mpg at 65 mph, while my friend's Tacoma only gets 20 mpg if he's lucky. The interior is spacious and comfortable, with easy-to-use controls and a Bluetooth system that works flawlessly. Overall, I've had no issues with my truck and I absolutely love it. If you're in the market for a midsize truck, I highly recommend checking out the Colorado.

I'm probably one of the few who opted for the LT with the 2.5L gas engine instead of the 3.6L, as I wasn't impressed enough to pay the premium. However, the LT package comes with a larger center console screen that is definitely worth the extra cost. With Apple CarPlay, navigation, calling, streaming, and talk-to-text all work great and are free. I've driven 16,000 miles in about 7 months and the truck rides wonderfully, is easy to park, and has enough room for home improvement work. Even when towing a car across the country for 2,000 miles, the little 4 did great, losing some speed on longer grades but no complaints on flat ground. I average 22 mpg around town, 16-18 while towing, and about 25-29 on the highway unloaded. For doing work around the house and on cars, it has a ton of well-thought-out features. The corner steps on the bumper make getting in and out easy, and the storage under the back seat is big enough for tie-down straps, hitch, and gloves. The GM roll-up hard bed cover is a must-have addition as it keeps whatever is in the bed dry but can be rolled up to haul tall things. Although the short bed is small, it is still big enough to load a pallet full of floor and shut the tailgate.

After six months on the road, I had to bring my vehicle in for a bad torque converter issue. Although GM is well-known for this issue, I was confident in their ability to fix it. They performed a multiple transmission flush five months ago, but unfortunately, the shudder re-occurred. Last week, they had to replace the bad torque converter. I am confident that this will solve the issue. I love the power and handling of the vehicle, and it has a decent ride. Overall, I am pleased with the interior and body style, which has received compliments from several people. However, I do find the driver's seat a bit uncomfortable. I opted for the work truck crew cab model to save some money on accessories, but I now regret not spending a bit more to get remote mirror controls, rear window defroster, and other features. The mileage is as expected, and the road mileage is good, but I mostly drive it in the city. I added a few extras, such as a tool box and step side running boards, which make it look really nice. Although I was concerned about the transmission issue, I am now confident that it will not rear its ugly head again.

This truck has had multiple issues, including air leaks in the doors/windows, a squeaky heater fan, faulty window regulators, difficulty starting and bucking, and the need for A/C servicing. Despite being a new truck with less than 13,000 miles, it has been in the shop six times in nine months. I am disappointed with the quality of this GM/Chevrolet product and will be taking it to arbitration.

Hello everyone, I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2021 Colorado. Unfortunately, I had some issues with it, including problems with the fuel injectors, fuel pump, and AC compressor before the truck hit 24,000 miles. Additionally, the truck vibrated at highway speeds over 73 MPH, which was quite uncomfortable. The infotainment system also had some issues, which made it unusable for a few days at a time. While I believe my specific vehicle was a lemon, I understand that single system failures can happen to any vehicle. However, having multiple systems fail independently of one another was a huge problem. I think it's important for Chevy to improve their quality control to ensure that their customers feel secure. Despite these issues, I did appreciate the affordable price of $23500 and the smooth ride quality (minus the high-speed rumble). While I ultimately decided to purchase from another company, I hope that Chevy can address these issues and improve their vehicles in the future. Thank you for listening to my experience.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my truck. Unfortunately, I had to take it to the shop to replace/repair the torque converter. At first, I thought I was hearing some engine miss and road noise, but then I noticed that the truck was vibrating badly when under slow acceleration. The problem got worse quickly, and I was worried. Interestingly, there was another person in the shop at the same time with a 2017 Colorado with similar issues. The dealer GM said they had the problem with mostly the Silverado, and they were working on it. They gave me a Silverado loaner to drive while repairing my truck, but it seems to have the same issue. I hope they can fix it soon. This is the first new vehicle of many in my 70 years that I had a problem with, but I'm still hopeful. If the problem is fixed and no others occur, I'll probably keep the truck. I basically like it. However, if there are any further issues, I'll consider trading it for the Ford Ranger when it comes on sale in the states. I had two Rangers before, and I loved them both. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I bought this truck back in 2005 and I've had some issues with it. There were some electrical problems with the door locks and power windows, but they seemed to fix themselves after a few weeks to a month. The transmission can be a bit hit and miss, and sometimes it takes a while to shift gears even with the pedal all the way to the floor. I've had to replace two parking brakes before hitting 50K miles, and I've had a couple of instances where the brakes didn't work as expected. Unfortunately, the 4WD HI setting doesn't seem to work even after the dealer tried to fix it. I've also experienced some stalling problems, even at highway speeds. Lastly, the hood has come loose a few times. Overall, it's been a bit of a bumpy ride, but I'm hoping to get it sorted soon!
