They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

The Apple Car Play, having to take my focus off of driving to try and unplug my phone and plug it back in to HOPEFULLY fix the issue of using the navigation or phone calls while I’m driving during long road trips is extremely dangerous for myself, my loved ones and others on the road around me. 2.) This error code is extremely unsettling to experience while 500 miles away from home and has caused an incredible amount of stress on multiple occasions. The light constantly turns on and off, leaving me completely clueless as to if I’m going to be left stranded on the side of the road. Both issues have been looked at by an automotive repair shop. And I’ve been advised to seek information to if there are any recalls regarding this issue. Check engine lights display for the Exhaust Camshaft Position Bank 2.

- Summary: My vehicle has only 70,000 miles on it. My transmission began to shimmy and is getting worse and worse and several technicians have told me the transmission will have to be replaced. The parts are not available anywhere in the country to rebuild the parts of the transmission that are defective. Secondly I was told I could replace the transmission but there are no transmissions available in the entire country to repair my vehicle with. After investigation on the internet this is a massive problem with this model vehicle and Chevy has been well aware of it for years. A few months ago I had the same problem with them air conditioner compressor. There were no air conditioner compressors available anywhere in the country for my four and a half year old vehicle.

- Summary: Power steering failure occurred while driving. This makes the truck very hard to turn. A warning message appears in the info screen “power steering assist failure” when the power steering failure happens. The only fix is to stop the truck, turn off the truck, open the drivers door, close the drivers door, and then restart the truck. The first occurrence of this failure was in July 2024. It has happened many times since: at slow and high speed, wet and dry conditions, on bumpy roads and smooth pavement. There does not seem to be a specific condition which triggers this event. Today, the power steering went out right as I was turning right. This caused me to turn very wide and forced me into the opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully, this did not cause an accident, however, the potential for an accident due to this failure is very high. A similar issue has been identified in the 2015 model year of this truck and there is an open recall for that model year but not this one. I believe the included model year list should be extended to include the 2016 model year at minimum.

I've had my 2021 Z71 for a month now and have already put 900 miles on it. The ride is very comfortable, and I appreciate the good acceleration when I need it. The infotainment system works well, and there's ample space in the bed. I'm also getting about 24 mpg, which is great. While I do have a couple of complaints - I could use a blind spot monitoring system and I'd like homelink garage door opener buttons - overall, I highly recommend this truck.

I was really hoping to get a Tacoma, but unfortunately, I was disappointed with every one I test drove. However, the Colorado proved to be a better ride with a superior engine and transmission. Since I won't be taking it off-road, it was difficult to justify getting a Tacoma. I do hope that the Colorado will earn a similar reputation for reliability as the Tacoma, especially considering its price point of close to $40,000. After reading many reviews, I decided to purchase the Colorado and after driving it for about 3000 miles, here are my thoughts: The engine and transmission are amazing, with the 8-speed shifting perfectly and providing lots of torque. It sounds great and feels incredibly strong, which is the best part of the truck. The interior is nice and spacious, making it easy to use and accommodating for my family of four and our dog. So far, I haven't had any issues with anything, and everything operates just as it should. It's a very enjoyable truck to drive. The only downsides are that the seat is a bit hard, which may be uncomfortable on long drives, and it doesn't have the same resale value as a Tacoma. Nonetheless, I believe that the Colorado is a great truck, and I hope that it will earn a reputation similar to Toyota's. I've always loved Chevy trucks, and this one is no exception.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love my Colorado! Out of all the trucks I've owned, this one is by far the most exciting and wonderful to drive. If you're considering buying one, I highly recommend getting all the options you can - they just add to the already great driving experience. I have to admit, I really wish I could have had the Colorado when my late wife was still with me and we were ticking off items on her bucket list. Every time I get in and drive this truck, I'm amazed and in awe of every part of it. Thanks so much, Chevrolet! This is actually my second Colorado - I went from an extended cab 4-cylinder to a 4-door crew V6, and I couldn't be happier.

I absolutely love my 2016 Colorado Ext Cab V6! With almost 1500 miles on it, I've been averaging 19-20mpg around town and 24.5-26mpg on the highway at 55-60 mph. Even at 70-80 mph, it still averages a respectable 23-24mpg. The transmission is incredibly smooth and I've never had any issues finding gears or accelerating quickly. The ride is quiet and comfortable, with smooth handling and a surprisingly tight turning radius. While the extended cab may not be the most spacious for passengers, it's perfect for my storage needs. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase and have no regrets!

I have been experiencing issues with my Chevrolet Colorado's radio (head unit) since I picked it up. Despite my efforts to resolve the issue with Autonation and Chevrolet, it has been ongoing for over a year now. Unfortunately, Autonation has informed me that there is nothing they can do about it, and Chevrolet has not been able to provide a solution either. I am disappointed with the warranty and the lack of support from both companies. As a result, I am currently trying to get it fixed well enough to trade it off, but other dealers have not been willing to offer me a fair price due to the obvious issues. I would advise caution when considering Chevrolet products.

While there are some design flaws and cost-cutting measures that are concerning, such as the absence of a driver's side grab handle and low seat belt clips, there are also some positive aspects to the vehicle, such as the power driver seat. The gas mileage for the 4 cylinder is still disappointingly low, and the transmission downshift can be odd at times, resulting in a clunk forward or a weird quiver from the rear end. The paint chips fairly easily, so it is recommended to install a deflector on the hood. The A/C is not as strong as expected for a new vehicle. The carpet on the floor is not of the highest quality, and it tends to shed hairballs frequently. The vehicle lacks full-sized wheel well liners and protective skid plates, which are standard on most vehicles. Recovery hooks on the front are also absent, which is standard in many vehicles. However, the cruise control works fine, and the interior storage space is adequate, although not as spacious as some other vehicles. Overall, the vehicle has some drawbacks, but it also has some positive features that make it a decent choice for some drivers.Manual mirrors can be difficult to adjust while driving, which can be a safety concern. It would be great if power mirrors were standard for trucks, as they would make it easier to adjust the passenger side mirror.

The transmission seems to have several issues, such as irregular shifting when accelerating, decelerating, or going up hills. Additionally, if you don't come to a complete stop and then accelerate, the transmission may buck and feel like you missed a gear or two. According to the service representative, this is called a 'skip shift' transmission, which is different from a sequential gear transmission. Unfortunately, the dealer has stated that GM designed the transmission this way, and there is nothing that can be done to fix the problems. In my experience, this is the worst transmission I have had in numerous vehicles owned. I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle or any other that comes with an 8 gear transmission. I have lost confidence in GM and GM products.

In August 2011, I purchased a new LT1 2WD with auto trans after hearing positive reviews from two friends who also bought Colorados. Initially, everything was great, but after a month, the truck started to spit and sputter, accompanied by a strange vacuum noise. Despite the dealer replacing some parts, the issue persisted. Additionally, the turn signal switch began to malfunction, and the truck made a concerning chain dragging noise when starting up, which we have yet to diagnose. These problems occurred with less than 4k miles on the truck, despite my diligent care. As a result, I am considering trading it in for an import truck. While my 95z28 with 130k miles has had no issues, this new truck has been a disappointment and I would not purchase it again.

I have owned this truck for 7 months now. I'm about to take it to the mechanic for the 5th time. The first month I had it the radio, back up camera, blinker clicks, horn honk, and USB port went out. At month 4 the ac went out. The transmission skips when you are doing a constant speed, the dealership told me it's because the "gears are wound so tightly the truck is having a hard time figuring out what gear to be in." The radio and back up camera have went out a total of 8 times, every time I take it in they say nothing is wrong when they run their diagnostics. I'm paying 600$ a month for a truck that runs like crap! I will NEVER buy another Chevy as long as I live. Save yourself the headache! The headlights went out tonight. So I have a truck less than a year old that I can't drive at night. This truck is a nightmare!
