The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

This error code is extremely unsettling to experience while 500 miles away from home and has caused an incredible amount of stress on multiple occasions. The light constantly turns on and off, leaving me completely clueless as to if I’m going to be left stranded on the side of the road. Both issues have been looked at by an automotive repair shop. The parts are not available anywhere in the country to rebuild the parts of the transmission that are defective. Secondly I was told I could replace the transmission but there are no transmissions available in the entire country to repair my vehicle with. After investigation on the internet this is a massive problem with this model vehicle and Chevy has been well aware of it for years. A few months ago I had the same problem with them air conditioner compressor. There were no air conditioner compressors available anywhere in the country for my four and a half year old vehicle.

- Summary: Power steering failure occurred while driving. This makes the truck very hard to turn. A warning message appears in the info screen “power steering assist failure” when the power steering failure happens. The only fix is to stop the truck, turn off the truck, open the drivers door, close the drivers door, and then restart the truck. The first occurrence of this failure was in July 2024. It has happened many times since: at slow and high speed, wet and dry conditions, on bumpy roads and smooth pavement. There does not seem to be a specific condition which triggers this event. Today, the power steering went out right as I was turning right. This caused me to turn very wide and forced me into the opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully, this did not cause an accident, however, the potential for an accident due to this failure is very high. A similar issue has been identified in the 2015 model year of this truck and there is an open recall for that model year but not this one. I believe the included model year list should be extended to include the 2016 model year at minimum.

So far, this has been a great truck! It handles very well, rides decently for a 4X4, and its gas mileage is good for a 4x4. It also looks better than its competition, but that is a matter of personal preference. Some of the reviews don't really reflect that this is a truck for its intended purpose and not a car. It has excellent 4X4 capabilities.

This truck is amazing! I have the 5 cylinder 3.7 litre engine (242 horsepower) and it has plenty of power. It also has awesome gas mileage for a truck, averaging around 20-21 combined, which is pretty much the same mileage I got with my 2006 Honda CR-V! Although the CR-V was a great car too (I traded it in with 54,000 completely trouble-free miles on it), I needed a truck for my construction work and the Colorado fills my needs perfectly. Don't be swayed by expert reviews, read the consumer reviews instead, and don't listen to people complaining about it not having a V8! I had a 2003 Dodge Ram1500 with a V8, and that had less horsepower than my 5 cylinder Colorado!

Test reviews may not be very kind to this pickup, but I have had a great experience with it. I owned a 2004 EXT 4CYL and liked it a lot, so I upgraded to an I-5 4WD EXT. I have owned it for 15 months and have had no problems. It has good fuel economy, is comfortable, and looks great with the LT2 package. I test drove a Ford Ranger, Tacoma, Frontier, and Dakota, and while they all have their attributes and dislikes, the Colorado seemed to be the right choice for me the second time around. I have no regrets. If you want to know more about these trucks, ask Colorado owners, not experts who test them and give their opinion. People's reviews who own these trucks are more reliable than consumer reports, etc. Some people expect trucks to drive like a car and handle like a sports car, but it's important to remember that it's a truck, and a great one at that.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Colorado mid-size truck. I have the reg. cab 5cyl z71 4x4 and I couldn't be happier with my choice! It handles really well, even in tough terrain. Plus, the gas mileage is great - much better than a full-size truck. I've found that adding a little weight to the back end makes it even more efficient. The factory stereo with tweeters is good, but I'm planning on adding a subwoofer for a little extra oomph. Compared to the new Ranger and the Dakota, the Colorado has tons more power and a better feel. In my opinion, it's the best domestic small truck out there. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and capable vehicle. Thanks for reading! Rusty

I see that you have a 2019 Z71. It's great to hear that you find it to be a well-designed and well-built truck. The handling is very good and the maneuverability is excellent for a pickup. The dash is well laid out and the controls are easy to understand and use. The infotainment system works smoothly and is nicely sized. The capabilities are very good, with a payload of 1400 lbs and towing capacity of 7,000 lbs, which should be more than enough for most people. I highly recommend it!

I have owned this truck for 7 months now. I'm about to take it to the mechanic for the 5th time. The first month I had it the radio, back up camera, blinker clicks, horn honk, and USB port went out. At month 4 the ac went out. The transmission skips when you are doing a constant speed, the dealership told me it's because the "gears are wound so tightly the truck is having a hard time figuring out what gear to be in." The radio and back up camera have went out a total of 8 times, every time I take it in they say nothing is wrong when they run their diagnostics. I'm paying 600$ a month for a truck that runs like crap! I will NEVER buy another Chevy as long as I live. Save yourself the headache! The headlights went out tonight. So I have a truck less than a year old that I can't drive at night. This truck is a nightmare!

I bought a used 2005 car in February 2009. So far, I've only had one problem with the A/C fan, but the dealer fixed it under warranty. Besides that, it drives well and gets pretty good gas mileage on long trips as long as you stay under 75mph. It also seems to handle very well in off-road situations. Overall, it's a good value for the money.

I have experienced several issues with my vehicle within the first 2,000 miles, including a check engine light due to a wiring issue, multiple problems with the air conditioner that the dealer has been unable to duplicate, and a locked-up touchscreen. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the proper attention and expertise.

I've had my Colorado for a month now, but unfortunately it's been in the shop for almost two weeks out of that time. The a/c compressor sounds like a jet plane and the truck has a noticeable vibration during highway speeds and deceleration. Despite being told that these issues are normal, I'm a certified diesel mechanic and I know that something isn't right. I traded in a 2013 Tacoma with over 100,000 miles that didn't have these problems, so I'm disappointed that my new truck is experiencing these issues. I do love the style of the truck, but I believe there may be some design flaws that need to be addressed. The dealership has suggested that I test drive another Colorado to show me that these issues are normal, but I've already driven two other models that didn't make these noises. I even drove a brand new LT model that was just delivered, but it had a whining noise that sounded like a siren coming from either the transmission or rear end. I was told by the lead technician at RK in Virginia Beach that this truck sounds like the carrier bearing was bad, but Colorado's don't even have carrier bearings. I've since hired a lawyer to help me resolve these issues. In my opinion, it's best to avoid buying the Colorado altogether. I regret my decision to purchase it.
