Chevrolet Colorado problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Chevrolet Colorado 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-29
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-29
- VIN: 1GCGTDE31G1
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Power steering failure occurred while driving. This makes the truck very hard to turn. A warning message appears in the info screen “power steering assist failure” when the power steering failure happens. The only fix is to stop the truck, turn off the truck, open the drivers door, close the drivers door, and then restart the truck. The first occurrence of this failure was in July 2024. It has happened many times since: at slow and high speed, wet and dry conditions, on bumpy roads and smooth pavement. There does not seem to be a specific condition which triggers this event. Today, the power steering went out right as I was turning right. This caused me to turn very wide and forced me into the opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully, this did not cause an accident, however, the potential for an accident due to this failure is very high. A similar issue has been identified in the 2015 model year of this truck and there is an open recall for that model year but not this one. I believe the included model year list should be extended to include the 2016 model year at minimum.

In my experience, I have found that Tacoma is overrated. While I have owned two Tacomas in the past, I ultimately decided to sell them both. The 4-cylinder model lacked power, and the 6-cylinder model had issues with the heater making a clanking noise. In contrast, I have had no issues with my 2023 Colorado Trail Boss, which I purchased for $38950. The ride is fabulous, the handling is great, and the doors are solid when closed. Additionally, I appreciate that the Colorado is made in America.

I needed to get a WT model rather than the base model to get the rear seats that are, at best, for occasional use. I elected to get the 6-cylinder engine because I felt that the 4 would be under powered, and there was just 1 mpg difference in fuel economy between the engines. I don't regret either decision. The Colorado is a great work truck, with adequate power, and it's quiet. I'm looking forward to getting years of use from it. Already, in the first year, I've hauled gravel, mulch, sand, paving stones, wood chips, and cardboard in it. I also have used it on a week-long camping trip, after purchasing an air mattress that fills the truck's bed, a tent that fits over the truck bed, and another tent that attaches to the first and sits on the ground behind the truck bed. I really appreciated the driving position of the truck when I drove for 11 continuous hours to my camping destination. My actual mileage in the truck is around 20 mpg--a bit less around town and as high as 25 mpg for long stretches of Interstate highways.

I'm so happy with my new 2023 Chevy Trail Boss! It has exceeded all of my expectations. The transmission is super smooth, it has lots of power, and it's very quiet at highway speeds. Since it's just my wife and me using it, I removed the back seat (which was easy) and installed a plywood platform to hold more stuff. My dog even rides on top of it! The platform lifts up easily via a piano hinge for quick access, and it has made a huge difference. Now I can keep all of my essentials, like tools and emergency items, stored under the platform. This Trail Boss is not only super capable, but it's also a lot of fun to drive!

I conducted thorough research before purchasing my 2019 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab 2WD LT 3.6-V6 5.1ft bed. I found a great video on Edmunds that compared the 2019 Colorado, Ranger & Tacoma, analyzing standard features, interior space, power and towing, ride comfort, and off-road capabilities. After watching the video, I was able to make an informed decision on the best truck for my needs. I absolutely love the ride and the stance of the truck. Although I didn't need 4-wheel drive, I did opt for the electronic locking rear differential, which comes in handy when parking in muddy grass parking lots during the summer rains in Florida. The 305 hp 3.6 naturally aspirated V6 is the best engine option for this truck, providing plenty of power and allowing me to tow up to 7,000 lbs with the towing package. As a 6'1 235lb driver, I appreciate the front seats' ample leg and headroom, and the power driver seat allows me to adjust it for maximum comfort. The only thing that kept me from giving this truck 5 stars was the lack of padding on the bottom of the front seats. One feature I really appreciate is the gauge cluster center screen that displays the current speed limit for the road you're driving on, which can help avoid speeding tickets where speed limits drop quickly. The HD Bose infotainment system is user-friendly and sounds awesome. I've had the truck for 14 months and have had no problems at all, and the average MPG on the highway has been between 28/30 mpg.

I have owned a Tacoma and a Frontier. Both were great trucks. The Colorado is also a great truck, and I am very happy with my purchase. It is comfortable, has a smooth ride, and boasts an outstanding interior and awesome exterior. The technology is top rate, and I love driving it. I have received a lot of people checking it out and asking me about it. I would encourage others to buy a Chevy.

I recently purchased a diesel powered truck to replace my 2005 Sequoia as a tow vehicle. Unfortunately, I experienced a warranty issue just 3 days after purchase. It's important to note that there are certain conditions with the diesel that can cause the vehicle to go into limp mode, which can only be cleared by taking the truck to a dealer. Additionally, I've had trouble with the Air Conditioning unit freezing up, and despite several attempts, GM has not been able to find a fix. This seems to be a known issue with the truck. Before making a purchase, I recommend taking the time to read through some forums. Although this truck comes with a high price tag, it may not be worth it. Personally, I am in the process of exercising the Ohio Lemon Law for a buy back.

I've been using this truck for commuting, towing a small camper, back roading in Colorado, and carrying people, and I haven't had a single mechanical issue. Passengers have even commented on how unexpectedly comfortable the ride is, and there's lower wind noise than I expected. Although I've never had infotainment features before, they work perfectly fine, and I love the backup camera - it's a must-have with a cap on the back. I'm still getting used to the length, though. The long wheelbase, long bed crew is just as long as a full-size truck. While the front bumper finish seems a little delicate and has a few nicks from bugs or whatever that have gone through the beautiful red paint and now black is showing, the truck is still running great 10 months and 25,000 miles later. However, I do have a concern with the front air dam, which is awful for a 4WD. I've scraped it several times driving mild 4WD roads, and GM is not interested in addressing the design flaw. According to the owner's manual, you're supposed to remove it if you're going to take it off-road, but you can't do it without disassembling the whole front end. Apparently, the off-road package is for looks only. GM customer service blew me off, and they have no fix for this design flaw. I'm very disappointed with GM.

We have 7 trucks in our fleet, but unfortunately 5 of them have been experiencing shaking at highway speeds and have had to be taken to the dealership. Despite attempts to fix the issue, such as changing the drive shaft and rebuilding the rear end, the problem persists. While the engine performance is impressive, the transmission can be quite jarring. Even my neighbor, who owns a 2016 Z71, has experienced similar issues and cannot drive it on the highway. It would be great if Chevy could address this problem. In the meantime, we are considering the new Ranger when it is released.

I recently traded in my 2004 Toyota Tacoma for a 2007 Colorado because I wanted to go back to Chevy trucks. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the engine. When it's cold, it cranks and dies, and then idles extremely rough until it warms up. I took it to the dealership for service, but they told me they've never heard of a Colorado doing that before. While the truck is in good condition bodywise and interiorwise, in my opinion, it might be best to wait until they work out all the bugs in this new 4 cylinder powerplant.
