They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

- Summary: My vehicle has only 70,000 miles on it. My transmission began to shimmy and is getting worse and worse and several technicians have told me the transmission will have to be replaced. The parts are not available anywhere in the country to rebuild the parts of the transmission that are defective. Secondly I was told I could replace the transmission but there are no transmissions available in the entire country to repair my vehicle with. After investigation on the internet this is a massive problem with this model vehicle and Chevy has been well aware of it for years. A few months ago I had the same problem with them air conditioner compressor. There were no air conditioner compressors available anywhere in the country for my four and a half year old vehicle.

- Summary: Power steering failure occurred while driving. This makes the truck very hard to turn. A warning message appears in the info screen “power steering assist failure” when the power steering failure happens. The only fix is to stop the truck, turn off the truck, open the drivers door, close the drivers door, and then restart the truck. The first occurrence of this failure was in July 2024. It has happened many times since: at slow and high speed, wet and dry conditions, on bumpy roads and smooth pavement. There does not seem to be a specific condition which triggers this event. Today, the power steering went out right as I was turning right. This caused me to turn very wide and forced me into the opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully, this did not cause an accident, however, the potential for an accident due to this failure is very high. A similar issue has been identified in the 2015 model year of this truck and there is an open recall for that model year but not this one. I believe the included model year list should be extended to include the 2016 model year at minimum.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I've been driving my Chevy Colorado since 2004, and it's been a great ride so far! With 116XXX miles and counting, I've definitely put this truck through its paces. While I've made a few performance upgrades to the engine, I haven't had to do any major overhauls yet. One thing I've learned is that it's important to keep up with the scheduled maintenance. I have noticed some issues with the blower motors, but fortunately, it's an easy fix. Thanks for listening!

I have always owned Silverado's before, but I was looking for something that was more fuel-efficient and lower to the ground for my elderly parents to get in and out of. I must say, I am rather impressed with this little truck. I have put 130,000 miles on it, and the only issue I had was the water pump, which went at about 80,000 miles, but it was covered under warranty. The only other minor issue is that the rear brakes squeak after a while due to brake dust build-up. This truck has a snow plow in the winter, and I tow a trailer for the band and my classic 55 Chevy, so I am not easy on it. Towing uphill can be a little rough, but the gas mileage is decent, about 22 on the highway and about 17-18 in the city.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2012 Colorado Crew Cab that I bought used with 21,400 miles on it. I opted for the 5 cyl. 3.7L engine because the 4 cyl. engine just wasn't powerful enough for me. Surprisingly, the fuel efficiency difference was only 1 mpg. When I'm driving alone with luggage, I get an impressive 24.5 mpg at 66 mph. With more people and luggage, it's more like 22 mpg. In Houston's mix of highway and city driving, I tend to get around 19-20 mpg. I did have a $400 sensor go out at 60,000 miles, but other than that, I've had no issues with the drivetrain. The ride and road noise aren't the best, but they're definitely livable. The turning radius is better than full-size trucks, but not great. Overall, I find that the fuel mileage is significantly better than full-size trucks, and this truck is reliable. If you're looking for a midsize truck with great value, this is the one to buy!

While I have been enjoying the power and size of the vehicle, I have noticed a few minor issues that I wanted to bring to your attention. After bringing it in for service, it turned out that the AC was not properly plumbed out the firewall, which caused the issue. As a volunteer firefighter in the northeast, I have pushed my truck to its limits. I specially ordered Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor tires and was able to get nearly 70K miles without needing an alignment. The gas mileage on the highway is good and the four-wheel drive is a necessity during the winter. I have had big truck owners get in and be surprised at the room and the smooth ride. My truck is the base model with vinyl flooring, which makes it easy to wash out with a hose. I am definitely getting another one. On the other hand, my girlfriend got a 2006 LT full cab with the five cylinder and has had lots of front end issues. I think the extra weight of the cab, engine, and trim must affect the suspension.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my 4wd work truck. I bought it new and, overall, it has been a reliable vehicle. Occasionally, I have trouble starting it on the first try and the check engine light comes on from time to time. Additionally, the gas mileage is slightly lower than advertised and it can be a bit challenging to park in tight spaces due to its 40-foot turning radius. However, I still find it to be a great truck for my needs!

On the night of November 13th, my wife was driving my truck home from a friend's house when the power steering suddenly failed. As a result, the truck is currently parked on a side street, unable to be driven. Despite the check engine light being on, I am confident that the issue will be resolved once the truck is towed to the dealership. I have already made arrangements for the truck to be towed to the dealership as soon as it opens, and I am certain that the problem will be resolved quickly and efficiently.
