Chevrolet Colorado problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Chevrolet Colorado 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-29
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-29
- VIN: 1GCGTDE31G1
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Power steering failure occurred while driving. This makes the truck very hard to turn. A warning message appears in the info screen “power steering assist failure” when the power steering failure happens. The only fix is to stop the truck, turn off the truck, open the drivers door, close the drivers door, and then restart the truck. The first occurrence of this failure was in July 2024. It has happened many times since: at slow and high speed, wet and dry conditions, on bumpy roads and smooth pavement. There does not seem to be a specific condition which triggers this event. Today, the power steering went out right as I was turning right. This caused me to turn very wide and forced me into the opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully, this did not cause an accident, however, the potential for an accident due to this failure is very high. A similar issue has been identified in the 2015 model year of this truck and there is an open recall for that model year but not this one. I believe the included model year list should be extended to include the 2016 model year at minimum.

I really like the lines of this truck, and it's more maneuverable than the Silverado. For my needs, I don't require the larger footprint of the Silverado. The interior is comfortable, although the back seat is a bit upright and tight if the front seats are all the way back. However, I don't use the back seat much, and you can always inch the seats up a bit to give passengers in the back a bit more room without losing comfort for front seat passengers. I'm not a big fan of the touch screens in any new cars. They're too complicated and take your eyes off the road. They did add some redundant readouts in the instrument cluster, which is an improvement, and redundant buttons on the info-center. However, as with all modern cars, you can't adjust them with gloves on, which can be a nuisance in areas like mine (NJ) that have cold winters. I also don't understand the new penchant for putting large wheels on SUVs and pickups! They're a fortune to fix and look out of proportion to the vehicle and wheels. Why do you think they offer The factory carpet mats look nice, but like any vehicle, they get dirty quickly. Overall, I really like the sleek lines of the truck, which give it a sporty look compared to the more boxy Silverado. In fact, I prefer the exterior styling of the Colorado to that of the FORD, TOYOTA or RAM equivalents. While some reviews have criticized the interior for being too simple, I personally love it. When manufacturers add chrome and fake wood, it all just looks like plastic to me. The only downside is the price, which I wish was lower. According to Nightly Business Report, companies make a huge profit on pickups - something like $10,000! Given that many people buy these trucks for work, not just play and riding around town, it would be great if the price could be lowered a bit. One thing I really appreciate about the Colorado is its REAL 4-wheel drive and truck construction, which is much better than the dumbed-down SUVs now aimed at the 'Soccer Mom' market. I use my truck for both work and play, as well as general travel, so it's very versatile. It's replacing my 1999 Chevy Blazer, which I loved, but unfortunately, the motor got fried from sitting in that debacle of a snowstorm last year. The Blazer had a tailgate (no annoying lift gate) and was on a truck body, which I really appreciated. The Colorado has great towing capacity, which is perfect for my needs. Overall, I'm very happy with the vehicle. However, I must say that I HATE the buying process, as it can feel like a 'steel cage death match' with dealers sometimes!

Vehicle year: 2017
We purchased this truck brand new and it has clean lines that give it a nice appearance. My wife loves it because it allows her to see down the road better than our previous car. It handles really well and we specifically chose it to fit into smaller parking spaces. Although we have a 2500 HD long bed for pulling our travel trailer, it was difficult to maneuver in and out of business parking spaces. This truck has been perfect for that reason. We have also used it to pull our 20-foot ski and fish boat and it performed well, even on steep boat ramps. The only reason I did not give it a 5-star rating is because we were disappointed to find out that it did not come with a CD player, despite having purchased the best entertainment package available. However, we have found a solution by downloading the CDs onto a flash drive and plugging it into one of the USB ports. The Bose sound system in the truck is also of great quality. We have put 100,000 miles on it in 4.8 years and it has been a very reliable truck. We have done all the required maintenance and it has held up well. We are looking to replace it soon with the same type of truck. We recently took it to our dealer for a complete 100,000-mile tune-up of all fluids, brakes, and a diagnostic review and front-end check, which all came back good. Overall, it has been a great truck for us as an older couple who travels a lot. Although we have thought about trading it in for a newer model, we have decided to keep it for a while longer.

You've already driven 1100 miles and it's been a great experience so far! The V6 engine is fantastic and provides excellent gas mileage, achieving 26 mpg at 70 mph. It's also very peppy and outperforms your 2013 Silverado. The Infotainment system is a great feature and the sound quality is impressive. The only downside is the lack of a CD player and auto 4 wheel drive option. Living in Michigan, you found the auto 4wd option useful when the roads were slick but not heavily snow covered. Nonetheless, it has plenty of towing ability and you're enjoying the 6 to 7 mpg more than your 2013 Silverado. Overall, it's been a great ride so far!

Vehicle year: 2009
I really don't understand the negative reviews from some 'experts' about this truck. It's the only Crew Cab pickup available with a 4 cyl engine, and it performs adequately while getting an impressive 26 mpg on the highway! The truck is also very comfortable, quiet, and has the best exterior styling in its class. I've driven all the competitors, and the Tacoma rides rough, while the Frontier is even worse. Additionally, the Colorado has the best back seat in its class. Don't let the 'experts' sway you - take this truck for a test drive and decide for yourself. Also, the 'innovative' features in the Tacoma and Frontier, such as the tie down tracks, will likely end up being more of an annoyance than a convenience. Overall, the Colorado is a solid and reliable pickup.

Vehicle year: 2012
I purchased a 2012 Chevy Colorado with a 3.7 liter 5 engine and 21,000 miles. In September 2012, I took it on a 6,000 mile road trip through 22 states, from Charleston, South Carolina to Great Falls, Montana, to Parker, Arizona, and back to Charleston. During the last leg of the trip, I towed a 2000 Dodge Dakota single cab with a frame hitch behind my Colorado. Throughout the entire trip, the truck ran excellently. Before towing the Dodge, I averaged 24.5 MPG on the highway at about 75 MPH. While towing the Dodge, I managed 15-19 MPG. Driving up the continental divides in both Arizona and New Mexico, I was able to maintain a steady speed of 70 MPH while towing, and the truck ran at about 2500 RPM.

After driving the '06 Colorado for a month, I noticed some parts were poorly installed. The mud flaps were uneven, the bed was not aligned properly causing one side to stick out farther, and the seats were flabby and made from cardboard. Additionally, the plastic wheel moldings were coming loose, revealing the double-sided tape, and the tailgate lock would not unlock. The driver's seat had wrinkles and was not tight after only a month of use. Although I like the vehicle, I wish GM would take more pride in the quality of their work. Perhaps the average person would not notice these things, but I expect a new vehicle to be perfect. On the bright side, I do appreciate the 6 cup holders and tool boxes, as well as the fact that all 4 doors open wide on the extended cab.

Great looks and a quiet ride! However, I noticed that the front cupholders are a bit small and won't hold a 1 liter water bottle. Also, the seats with base interior don't recline. One thing to keep in mind is that without the $500 power package, there is no lock cylinder on the passenger door, which can be inconvenient and a safety concern, especially if you have children.

Despite having experienced the rumble/vibration issue that appears to be a common problem with Chevy trucks, I took the necessary steps to address the issue. I had the transmission flush and torque converter replaced under warranty, but unfortunately, the issue persisted. After conducting thorough research, I discovered that many others were also experiencing this problem. Despite my efforts, the dealer was unable to resolve the issue, and even the Chevrolet Regional Service manager failed to provide a solution. As a result, I had to take a substantial loss and return the truck. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend any Chevy/GM vehicle with this transmission.

The truck has been at the dealer more than my house due to an over the air update that killed the battery, radio, and dash. Despite the dealer having it for 3 months, they were only able to update and turn back on the radio and dash, and it still has a theft deterrent error. As a result, GM has decided to buy it back. It appears that GM attempted to implement too much technology without the necessary hardware upgrades.

After driving this truck for 6 months, I wanted to update my initial review from 9/24/06. I'm happy to report that most of the rough idle and cranking problems were solved with a software update to the onboard computer module. Although I did have to take it back for a defective ignition switch soon after. (Engine would die suddenly while driving!) However, since that first month, I have had no problems whatsoever with the vehicle. I must say, this is the first vehicle that I have ever received so many questionnaires about (5 so far, I think). Most included a new one dollar bill. Evidently, a lot of people are interested in all aspects of this truck. Overall, I like this truck a lot better now than I did before.
