Chevrolet Colorado problems

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Chevrolet Colorado 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-29
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-29
- VIN: 1GCGTDE31G1
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Power steering failure occurred while driving. This makes the truck very hard to turn. A warning message appears in the info screen “power steering assist failure” when the power steering failure happens. The only fix is to stop the truck, turn off the truck, open the drivers door, close the drivers door, and then restart the truck. The first occurrence of this failure was in July 2024. It has happened many times since: at slow and high speed, wet and dry conditions, on bumpy roads and smooth pavement. There does not seem to be a specific condition which triggers this event. Today, the power steering went out right as I was turning right. This caused me to turn very wide and forced me into the opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully, this did not cause an accident, however, the potential for an accident due to this failure is very high. A similar issue has been identified in the 2015 model year of this truck and there is an open recall for that model year but not this one. I believe the included model year list should be extended to include the 2016 model year at minimum.

I recently purchased a 2023 Z71 on Memorial Day! After the purchase, the dealer kept the truck to install tint on the front windows and I added heated seats. However, after having the truck for only two days, the engine light, forward collision light, and other warning bells started flashing. I immediately headed back to the dealer and it took two weeks to get the truck back due to a known problem with the engine. Although it was not a good first impression, the dealer fixed the issue and even provided me with a new car to drive while my truck was in the shop. Since then, I have had no issues and absolutely love the truck. The acceleration is great and I am a big fan of the new interior and exterior. I hope this review helps!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my truck. I've had it for a little over a year now, and I must say, it's been the most reliable and easiest to maintain car or truck I've ever owned. I have a regular cab xtreme zq8 model, and I haven't had any issues whatsoever. I've only had to do rear drums and change the oil for maintenance. The only thing I would say is that the 2.8 is a little slow while accelerating, but once you're at speed, it's smooth and quiet. On the highway, I average 32 mpg, and I can get 450+ miles a tank. Overall, I would highly recommend a Colorado to anyone. Thanks for reading!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my truck. I bought it brand new back in 11/07 and traded in my old Toyota 2004 Tacoma. I was a bit hesitant at first since it was my first American truck, but I have to say, I'm really pleased with it! I've put over 16000 miles on it and it still rides great. It handles the road really well and drives like a car. I've even had to pull my 6000lb skid loader out of the mud and tow large chippers, and it had no trouble at all. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it to anyone in the market for a new truck!

Vehicle year: 2005
Great power and mileage! You can expect to get 20.5 to 21+ MPG during a combination of highway and city driving in warmer months, and up to 23 to 24 MPG on the interstate. The wheels are a bit on the cheaper side with a large plastic center piece, but the truck still has a very bullish appearance compared to other brands. The console could use a bit of enlargement, but overall a great choice for a smaller truck!

It's great to hear that you haven't had any problems with the performance of your truck despite the snowfall every day since you bought it! The 4WD has been performing as it should and it's definitely a plus that the 4 cylinder mileage is good with gas prices still high. It sounds like you got a good deal on a solid truck for under $20 grand. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the truck I purchased. After test driving all the similar midsized competition, I found that this one was the only one that could fit an infant baby seat in, which was a must for me. However, I did experience some trouble with it when it overheated and stranded me and my two daughters on April 17th, 2015. It was a warm day at 70°F and I was just idling while waiting for my wife. I'm a bit worried about how it will perform if I ever need to tow something with it. Have you had any similar experiences with your truck?

Vehicle year: 2021
I recently purchased a 2021 Colorado and have driven it for less than 900 miles over the past 7 weeks. Unfortunately, I have had to take it in for service twice due to some issues. The brakes tend to grind for the first 10 minutes of driving, and despite having them cleaned and the pads changed, the issue persisted. I was informed that GM is currently working on a service bulletin to address this problem. Additionally, the hands-free phone system has been a bit finicky, only working about 10% of the time. Although the program was flashed and seemed to work better, the issue persisted. I eventually installed Google Assistant, which has helped improve the system's functionality. While it is still a bit slow to respond and doesn't work for texts, it is now working pretty well. I understand that these issues can be frustrating, but the service team has been doing their best to address them and I appreciate their efforts.

I really love this truck despite its archaic styling (113k miles). For those who complain about the power/interior space, I suggest buying a full-size truck. This compact truck has plenty of pep. I've hauled a lot of weight in it, and it handles it with ease. I chose the Colorado over the Dakota because the latter had a hungry V8, the Ranger was too tiny, and the Taco and Frontier were about 2k more expensive. The Colorado drives like a small SUV, smooth and easy on the blacktop. It can handle the KS mud and CO snow with ease, especially with a decent pair of shoes. The mpgs are great, about 18 city at 6500 ft, which is impressive for most pre-gas hike vehicles, not just trucks. If you need a layman's truck for the occasional moving day or trash haul, the Colorado is the perfect choice.

This is the third time my truck has been in the shop for transmission shudder, and this time they need to replace the torque converter. Unfortunately, the dealership informed me that this may not solve the problem, as they have seen similar issues with other vehicles. As an owner of a Chevy Colorado, it's disheartening to hear this news. I'm considering selling the truck once it's out of the shop, even though I loved and babied it. The dealership mentioned that they may have a fix after the first of the year, but until then, it's up to the customers to decide whether to keep driving and shaking until more serious issues arise after the warranty expires.

Vehicle year: 2016
The vehicle has experienced multiple issues with the battery, stalling at red lights, and transmission. Despite numerous attempts to address these issues, they persist even with only 10k miles on the vehicle. It is clear that further attention is required to resolve these problems.
