2005 Chevrolet Colorado problems
The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.
First generation (2004)
The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.
The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2005 Chevrolet Colorado problems
The 2005 Chevrolet Colorado, a mid-size pickup truck, has been noted for several common problems by its owners. These issues primarily revolve around electrical systems, braking, and engine performance.
Electrical issues are the most prevalent problems reported by 2005 Chevrolet Colorado owners. These issues include failing tail lights, melted wiring, and anti-theft systems inexplicably kicking in and locking the ignition. Electrical problems account for 69 of the vehicle's 353 total National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) complaints.
Braking issues have also been reported, with the most concerning being brake failure at low speeds. A 2012 complaint reported that the anti-lock brakes activated, preventing the driver from stopping the vehicle on warm, dry pavement. This was the final complaint on the matter, but it highlights a potential safety concern for 2005 Colorado owners.
Engine and powertrain complaints are less common but have been reported. A 2021 complaint reported hesitation when pressing the accelerator pedal at 169,000 miles. However, major engine and powertrain issues are generally uncommon below 200,000 miles.
The 2005 Chevrolet Colorado has only three recalls on file with the NHTSA, indicating a relatively reliable powertrain and overall vehicle design. Most of the repairs made during the first few years of ownership are likely to be minor, with electrical systems and interior accessories being the most common sources of problems.
In terms of longevity, 2005 Chevrolet Colorado drivers typically report lifetime mileages ranging from 200,000 to 300,000 miles. With proper maintenance, a used Colorado should be expected to get somewhere in the 250,000-mile range.
In summary, the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado has common problems related to electrical systems, braking, and engine performance. However, with proper maintenance and care, these issues can be mitigated, and the vehicle can provide reliable service for many years and miles.

2005 Chevrolet Colorado recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: CHILD SEAT
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, "CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS." THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.
- Consequence: BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINT'S PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY JUNE 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. IN THE INTERIM, OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE CAN OBTAIN A FREE REPAIR, HOWEVER THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN WHEN THE NEW DESIGN PART BECOMES AVAILABLE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS MAY EXPERIENCE THE PERMANENT LOSS OF BRAKE LAMP FUNCTION OR BRAKE LAMPS THAT ARE ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES. THE CENTER HIGH-MOUNTED STOP LAMP (CHMSL) IS AFFECTED IN BOTH INSTANCES. ALSO, IF EQUIPPED, THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL BECOME INOPERATIVE. ANY TRAILER BRAKE LAMPS WHICH ARE CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMP WIRING WILL MIMIC THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE LAMPS WHEN EITHER CONDITION OCCURS.
- Consequence: A FOLLOWING DRIVER MAY NOT KNOW WHEN THE BRAKES HAVE BEEN APPLIED, AND A REAR-END CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE LAMP SWITCH ASSEMBLY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 5, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 OR ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the 3.5L crew cab Z71. I found the ride to be incredibly comfortable, and the exterior design is sleek and modern. Additionally, the performance is great, and I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent gas mileage. Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts!
-
Hi there! We're thrilled to share our experience with our Chevy Colorado program vehicle. We were lucky enough to find a crew cab LS with OnStar and XM radio, and it even came in the stunning Granite Blue color which gives it an upscale look. We've been able to haul our 1500lb boat trailer and a small utility trailer with ease. While it may not be the fastest truck out there, we've been pleasantly surprised with what the 4cyl engine can do. We typically get around 17-19mpg in the city and 24-26mpg on the highway, depending on the weather and speed. Speaking of features, we love that it came with power windows/locks, AC, 6CD/XM Radio, and traction control. Unfortunately, the locking differential and traction control are not available on 4cyl crew cab LS models from '06 and later. Thanks for reading!

I'm so glad I bought my Colorado after my S-10 died. It was definitely the right decision. I looked at other light duty trucks, but the Colorado stood out. It gets better gas mileage than any of the other trucks I considered, which is really important right now. I was pleasantly surprised by how much power it has for a 5 cylinder truck.
-
The Colorado is a fantastic truck that is just as comfortable as any other on the market. It has power everything and a 3.5 L 5 cyl engine that provides plenty of power for everyday hauling and stop-and-go traffic. The body has simple yet eye-catching lines with square ends. It's almost identical to the Silverado in terms of cosmetics, making it perfect for those who want to haul their kids and U-Haul without driving an SUV. Plus, it has great fuel economy!
-
I love this truck! I take it to places my 4-wheeler loves to go. Thanks, LCpl Haynes Jr Kenneth L USMC.

It sounds like you've had a bit of trouble with your car. It's been in the shop twice for faulty springs and a loud A/C compressor.
Dennis Lubowitz 2024-11-20
I love the Chevy Colorado for its fuel economy and stylish exterior. However, I've been having some trouble with the fan. It only runs on high and the other 3 speeds don't seem to work. I've taken it in for repairs three times already, but the issue persists. It's a bit frustrating because it wasn't like this when I first purchased it, but I'm hopeful that it can be resolved soon. Despite this issue, I still think the Chevy Colorado is a great car with a lot of sportiness.
Mitchell Sauer 2024-11-13
Great performing and great looking truck from the exterior. However, the interior could use some improvement. The interior design is a bit boring and the seats are stiff. The console between the seats looks a bit cheap and the door panels are made of thin-looking plastic. On the bright side, the truck rides nicely and handles excellently with good braking. If GM had spent more time and money on the interior, this could have been an amazing truck.
Florian Johns 2024-09-24
If you are considering purchasing a Chevy Colorado, it may be worth doing some research on the vehicle's electrical system. Some owners have reported issues with the blower, lights, and radio, which may be related to GM's electrical system. However, there are many other great manufacturers to choose from, so it's important to weigh your options and find the best fit for your needs.
Dennis Brekke 2024-09-18
This truck is poorly constructed. The tires needed replacement at just 30K miles, and now I am being told that I need to spend $1500-2000 on new brakes, shocks, struts, and tie rods. The front end has needed alignment twice, once at 30K miles and again at 50K miles. Additionally, the interior molding in the windshield was ruined after just one year, and there are numerous rattles and squeaks. As a manufacturer, it is unacceptable to sell a vehicle of such low quality.
