1998 Honda Civic problems

honda logo

The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 1998 Honda Civic problems

The Honda Civic 1998, particularly the 1.5 VTEC-E (84kw) model, is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.

  • Ignition and Temperature Gauge: Another common issue is that the engine temperature jumps to the middle when the key is turned to the ignition, making it difficult to determine if the engine is warmed up. This could be due to a faulty temperature sensor or gauge.
  • Odometer and Trip Reset Buttons: The odometer is reported to work, but the trip reset buttons do not. This could be due to a faulty reset button or a problem with the odometer's circuitry.
  • Non-functioning Lamps in the Cluster: Some owners have reported that some lamps in the instrument cluster are not working. This could be due to a blown fuse or a faulty lamp.
  • Fuel Type: There is confusion about the type of fuel to use in the car. The engine runs on regular 91-octane unleaded petrol, except for the VTEC engine, which requires 95-octane premium unleaded.
  • Rear Fog Light: Some owners have reported that the rear fog light switch does not work, indicating that the car might not have a rear fog light or that the switch is faulty.
  • Distributor and Exhaust Manifolds: The D16Y7 engine, in particular, is known to have issues with the distributor and cracked exhaust manifolds.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical issues such as a dead clock, a non-functioning fuel gauge, and stalling due to a faulty idle air control valve have also been reported.
  • Maintenance and Repairs: Regular maintenance is crucial for the Civic, especially changing the belts every 100,000km and using the recommended Honda oil for the automatic transmission to avoid potential problems.
  • Safety Features: The safety features in the sixth gen Civic are limited, with dual front airbags standard across all models from 1998, but ABS and ISOFIX baby car seat mounts were not available.

These issues do not necessarily mean that the engine is "done and ready for expensive repair", but they are common problems that owners of the Honda Civic 1998 have reported. Regular maintenance and careful inspection can help prevent or address these issues.

How many miles will a 1998 Honda Civic last?

It's not uncommon for a Civic to last upward of 20 years, and you can tack on the miles during that expanse of time. You could get from 200,000 to 300,000 miles with a Honda Civic before it completely breaks down or requires extensive repairs.

Are 1998 Honda Civics reliable?

Stylish, very comfortable, powerful enough, handles extremely well, unquestionably reliable, offers great fuel economy, great bang for your buck. Highly recommend the 6th generation Honda Civic.

What was a bad year for Honda Civic?

What Year Did the Honda Civic Have Engine Problems? The Honda Civic years 2001 – 2006 is a notorious batch of vehicles in the lineup with multiple engine and airbag issues. However, models from 2006 to 2008 and a few 2009 models had coolant issues such as leaks that could blow up your engine.

What is the common problem of Honda Civic?

Brakes. Some Civic owners have complained of squealing brakes; Honda is said to be aware of the problem and working on a fix, though it's worth keeping in mind that any Civic you test drive with noisy brakes may not be easy to fix.

1998 Honda Civic recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 18 recalls for different components of the 1998 Honda Civic.

2020-01-17
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

Negative 1998 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Vidal Schinner 2024-11-23

This car has been a reliable mode of transportation since it was purchased at 4 years old with only 21k miles and one owner. While it may not be the best option for highway driving due to its automatic transmission, it is perfect for getting around town. Although the base model is quite basic, it has been maintenance-free for the past 20 months and 27k miles. There have been some minor issues with the shift program, causing the engine to rev excessively when accelerating after slowing down to about 20mph, but overall the car has been dependable. Additionally, the windshield wipers have a unique pattern that leaves some areas un-wiped, and the passenger-side wiper is smaller than the driver-side wiper. Despite these minor issues, this car is a great choice for anyone seeking a reliable and practical vehicle.

  2. Garfield Williamson 2024-08-12

This car is reliable but I have to admit, it's not my favorite. I've had to deal with a lot of small repairs on this cheaply built car and I'm not a fan of the manual windows or the defrosters. Plus, it tends to shake if you drive faster than 65 mph. However, I did get a good deal on it - I only paid $1,500 for it. In fact, I'm about to sell it now that I've put 18k miles on it, but overall it's been a decent car.

  3. Abe Buckridge 2024-08-11

Although there have been some issues with this car, it still has a lot to offer. It may not be as unique as some of its European competitors, but it has its own strengths. The transmission and manifold may have had some problems, but they can be fixed. Additionally, the car's popularity speaks to its reliability and accessibility. Overall, this car is a solid choice for those looking for a dependable vehicle.

  4. Geovany Hartmann 2024-07-27

I am extremely dissatisfied with this car. The paint has peeled, the door handles have broken, and the wiper motors have failed. Now, at 155k, there is a deep knock in the engine, most likely a rod. As a result, I have lost all confidence in Honda!

  5. Franz O'Connell 2024-05-19

I wrote a review on this car back in March 2008 after I purchased it. I currently have 102,000 miles and it is still running strong. Since last August (at around 95,000 miles), I had some maintenance work done, including replacing the front passenger axle due to CV boot/joint failure, servicing the AC system and brake system (although no new pads/rotors were needed!), replacing the over the axle pipe on the exhaust, and installing new spark plugs. My oil pan gasket was also leaking, which was fixed by my indy mechanic for about $800 in parts and labor. Although I may have a front crank seal leaking and the clutch is going, it has yet to leave me stranded and burns no oil. It even started every time this past winter in frigid outside temps. Overall, it's a fantastic little car!

A vehicle that allows you to focus on driving without worrying about the hood release. Maintenance is as easy as any car since the Model T, and the comfort is great even for someone as tall as myself.

  2. Casper Heller 2024-11-13

I am the second owner of my Honda Civic. I've had it for over 3 years and I have never had to get repairs. It's a very dependable car and great for fuel economy.

  3. Maxime Bins 2024-11-01

I bought this car brand new because of its fuel economy and the fact that it was a Honda - my 8th one! During the first few years, I was in sales and on the road all the time. I cruised at about 85mph and got an impressive 37-38 mpg. Nowadays, my wife commutes in this car for 4 miles each way, in town, and still gets a respectable 32 mpg. Last week, we drove 4 hours to Sea World and back, cruising at 70 mph, and got an amazing 39 mpg. Other than normal maintenance, I have only had to replace the 'B' pipe and the blower fan. The A/C is great (a must-have in Florida), and the manual transmission is flawless. There can be some road noise if your tires become unevenly worn, but overall, this car has been a great investment. If you can find one, I highly recommend buying it!

  4. Javier Conroy 2024-10-09

You've got yourself a decent car with a decent ride and handling. The off the line pickup isn't the greatest with the automatic, but the passing power is decent. The only downside so far is that when the gas tank has fewer than 3 gallons in it, it can be nearly impossible to start. Unfortunately, the dealer hasn't been able to find anything wrong with it or duplicate the problem. Additionally, the dealership was a bit of a ripoff for trade-ins and can be a bit of a pain to work with in general.

  5. Maximillian Murray 2024-10-04

I love my Honda! My '98 Civic has over 200,000 miles and is still going strong (this is my second one, the first was a 1990 with 109K). It has had a few issues, but who hasn't? The A/C system was replaced when it was 7, and I had to replace the odometer cable. When it was 10, the radiator and ignition coil were replaced, but that's understandable at its age. Overall, it has been a wonderful little car. It's fairly zippy, not a Porsche, but it gets me onto the freeway with no problems. The interior is completely intact, nothing broken or fallen apart. In the last year (it's now 12), the dash lights for the air system have faded, but I haven't asked the dealer about it. I would give my Honda a 10-star rating!
