The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

I have owned my Astro for over 12 years and have loved every minute of it. It has taken me on trips from Canada to Florida and everywhere in between. I have used it as a cargo van, loading it beyond its maximum capacity, as well as a passenger van, carrying people on long journeys. I have also gone on numerous camping trips with my Astro. In my opinion, this is truly the best mini van ever built! I would like to thank General Motors for building such a great mini van. Since then, I have purchased a 2001 GMC Safari and am now reliving my experiences with my new found love. Keep up the good work and long live the Astro/Safari!

This van is incredibly dependable! The motor and transmission are strong and we have had no problems driving it to California, Colorado, and Missouri. We would confidently drive it anywhere. The only minor flaws we have noticed are the lack of front passenger leg room and the door handles, which we have had to replace on both of our Astros. Despite having 186000 miles on it, our van still runs great! We highly recommend this vehicle!

We purchased our van from family and it has been in our family since 1995. Our van has over 330,000 Km on it and we absolutely love it. Some of our friends suggest that we buy new cars like them, but we know better. These are the same friends who call us when their new cars break down and need to be towed home. We love our old van, even with the rust.

I really like this van, but there are a couple of things that could be improved. The turning radius isn't as tight as our old Voyager, and it can be difficult to back up at night due to the dark tinted windows and high seats. However, it's a fantastic traveling van with a fold-down back seat that turns into a bed and nice window blinds. Plus, it gets better mileage than we expected, averaging 20 mpg and even up to 24 mpg on the interstate. Overall, we're very happy with it and plan to keep it until it falls apart!

This van has been fantastic for our family since we got it in 1994. Even though it has barely over 70,000 miles, it still runs like a dream! We have had very few problems with it, except for an issue with the brakes. Something kept busting in them, and now I think the problem is coming back. But other than that, everything is great. The front and rear A/C work perfectly!

The Astro's greatest merit is its spacious interior, which comfortably accommodates up to 8 passengers and a considerable amount of cargo. Additionally, it is the only newer minivan capable of towing up to 4500 pounds. While it may not be the most exciting vehicle, it provides reliable and practical transportation. AWD, a common option, is particularly useful for driving in snow, although it unfortunately does not work in reverse and reduces mileage by 2 mpg. Expect an AWD model to achieve 13-17 mpg. The powertrain performance is adequate, although it may not feel particularly strong and can be noisy when pushed hard. While the seats are only moderately comfortable, they were improved in 2002. Overall, the Astro offers great value and practicality to owners who prioritize functionality over modern design and performance.

This van has had multiple issues since the beginning, including breakdowns on the freeway and the need for replacement parts such as the catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, and fuel pump. Despite these challenges, we were able to work with GM Customer Relations to resolve the issues and find solutions. While the ride may not have been as smooth as we would have liked, we appreciate the opportunity to have gained experience with this vehicle and look forward to exploring other options in the future.
