Chevrolet Astro problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

I'm so glad with the performance of my vehicle! It has great acceleration, mileage, and sits up as high as any passenger truck on the road. The only thing I wish I had done differently is ordering the rear heating and a/c. The AWD is absolutely awesome, I'll never go back!

This is my second Astro and I put 175000 miles on the first one. Whether I'm towing my 5500lb boat, hauling various team members for my 4 kids' sports, driving on a 3000 mile vacation, or just buzzing around town, this van is the only thing that can do it all. SUVs are too long outside for less room inside, and mini vans are like recycled Pepsi cans when compared to the stoutness and versatility that the Astro offers. Consumer magazines may rank it poorly, but in the real world, it's a different story! Oh, and one last thing - a set of KYB Monomax shocks can transform the ride to modern standards.

I've owned this van for 2 years now, and it has been the most comfortable and reliable vehicle I've ever had. As a big man weighing nearly 300 lbs with a bad back, I've struggled to find a vehicle that doesn't cause me stress and discomfort. However, this van has been a game-changer for me. I can drive for hours without any issues. The engine is strong and the mileage is about 20, which is great. Although there are a few minor problems, such as the heater control knobs being a bit weak and expensive to replace, and the feet feeling cramped due to the fender well protruding inside the floorboard too much, these are classic Chevy problems. Additionally, larger individuals may have difficulty getting comfortable on the passenger side. Overall, the van rides like a dream, and the 60 series tires add stability over 75s. I would definitely consider buying another Astro, and my family loves it too!

Your first one, an '89, has 140,000 miles on it and is still on the road, that's impressive! Your new one sounds amazing with the AWD and extended features, I'm glad to hear that they are working out so well for you!

I've had mine for about 70,000 miles now and only had a couple of significant problems: idler arms, and fuel injection needed repair. Neither left us stranded. It has lots of room and from what I've seen, they'll run forever. If you tow or live in a hot climate, make sure to get a tranny cooler.

This van has been nothing but trouble since day one, with multiple tire replacements and alignments needed at under 10,000 miles. Despite our diligent preventive maintenance, we have also experienced air conditioning problems. It is worth noting that the safety reviews of this van are listed as 'poor'. Based on our experience, I would recommend considering other options if you are in the market for a reliable minivan.

Our '98 Astro always seems to need something fixed. I know it can be frustrating, especially when the parts are expensive, but we'll get through it. Unfortunately, at 115,000 miles, we were told that the transmission is on its way out. That's not ideal, but we'll figure it out. As for whether I would buy this vehicle again? Probably not, but it's been a good run.

Hi there! I noticed that you got the LS AWD (with leather and every available option) for family trips. It's a shame to hear that you've had some trouble with it though. It sounds like there have been quite a few issues with the vehicle, including some rattling and parts coming apart on the interior. That must be frustrating!
