Chevrolet Astro problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Chevrolet Astro

How many miles can a Chevy Astro van last?

about 200,000 miles

The transmissions are good for about 200,000 miles if not overworked. They become rattle traps and start to disintegrate around the engine at about 350,000 miles although I have seen some with over 400,000 miles on them.

Are Astro Vans hard to work on?

Are Astro vans easy to work on? The Chevy Astro van is considered to be very easy to work on. These have the Chevrolet 4.3L V6 engine that is known to be very simple to service if any issues come up.

Why was the Chevy Astro discontinued?

The Astro was discontinued in 2005 because General Motors thought that they were not selling as well as they used to. The Astro was replaced by the Chevrolet Uplander, Chevrolet Traverse and the Chevrolet City Express.

Why are Astro Vans so popular?

The removable seats made the van especially popular with families. Sports gear, camping equipment, and so much more could fit into the cargo area with no problem. The back doors of the Astrovan were also something new and different.

Latest negative Chevrolet Astro car reviews

  1. Cristian Miller 2025-05-24

    Vehicle year: 1998

We have owned an Astro since 1999, bought at 2K miles. Unfortunately, we have had to pay for multiple repairs since then, some of which have been for the same issue. If I were to put together all of the repair receipts, the total might even surprise us. It's important to watch out for idler arm problems, which seem to be a recurring issue due to poor design. Additionally, we've experienced some electrical system problems, as well as issues with little motors and switches. In contrast, we also own Toyota products, which have required significantly less expensive and redundant repairs. It's always good to be aware and cautious!

  2. Cory Koepp 2025-05-21

    Vehicle year: 1995

We absolutely adore our AWD Astro! It has taken us on countless adventures, from towing our camper over the Rockies to navigating Jeep trails in the mountains. It's incredibly versatile and has never let us down. While the front foot room is a bit tight, that's a common issue with all vans. With AWD and ABS, it's hands down the best snow and ice vehicle we've ever owned. Even with 125K miles, it still only burns a quart between oil changes and gets a respectable 14-19 mpg. It's such a shame that they're discontinuing it. We're holding onto ours for dear life because we can't find another one with the same setup.

  3. Braxton Boyle 2025-05-21

    Vehicle year: 1998

It's such a shame that the build quality of the Astro isn't up to par, especially since it's such a great fit for families with diverse outdoor interests. Unfortunately, we had some issues with the vehicle and the dealer contesting warranty claims didn't help matters. Thankfully, the extended warranty came in handy and saved us a lot of money on unexpected breakdowns. We did have a bit of a nightmare experience with Security Chevrolet in Vista, California, but they're no longer in business.

  4. Fermin Ledner 2025-05-20

    Vehicle year: 2001

I have owned an 85 and a 91. However, my most recent Astro has been the worst one yet. I miss the comfort of the seats of my other vans. Despite deflating the back support completely, it is still uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I cannot adjust the AC vent to prevent the air from blowing right on me, and the same goes for the passenger. Additionally, the rear suspension is too soft, which led me to reinforce it. I have spent a lot of time at the dealer due to various issues such as a leaking roof, brake light, door lock, rear axle, brakes, power windows, etc. Like my other Astros, the idle is rough, the rear brakes are weak, and the check engine light comes on.

  5. Bradley Johns 2025-05-19

    Vehicle year: 2003

This van is the ultimate choice for anyone looking for a minivan with more passenger, cargo, and towing capacity than any other on the market. Its truck frame and suspension make it sturdier than the car-based minivans of today, while still providing a smooth ride quality and handling. Although the interior quality of the LS may look and feel cheap, I personally appreciate the rubber floor mats that come with it. Compared to my previous 2002 Pontiac Montana, this van is much more capable of hauling 8 adult passengers and their luggage. If you're in need of a van that can effortlessly carry eight people and their belongings while cruising down the freeway, then this is the perfect choice for you.

This is my second Astro and it is incredibly capable of doing everything. With its truck frame, it can tow large campers with ease, and it gets an impressive 19 mpg on the highway for an AWD van/truck of this size. It handles snow and ice with ease, although strong winds can push it around a little on the interstate. At 119,000 miles, I finally had to replace something - the starter - which was very easy to replace myself. Changing the plugs isn't too bad if you pull the front wheel off. Overall, we absolutely love the (boxy) design, because you sit up so high and have a great view of what's going on in front of you. This van is better than any other minivan we have owned, including Mazda and Plymouth, and even better than our Toyota 4x4 pickup. We think it's a great van and would love to see it make a comeback!

I bought the Astro W with 130,000 miles on it 3 years ago and I couldn't be happier with my choice. We replaced our Jeep Cherokee with it and it has been a smoother ride with more cargo space. It's not just a soccer mom mobile, it's my Toy Box and I have a long playlist to keep me company. Even with one seat removed, it can still comfortably seat 5 people and fit 5 bikes, skis, snowboards, climbing gear, windsurf/kitesurf rigs, or a mixture of them all in the back. During winter, I move the seat to the back row and it provides a nice space to put on ski boots, have lunch between snowkite sessions, or even sleep in it. The rear heat works great and there's no need for a rocket box, but it has factory racks so it's easy to add if needed. I can even hook up a trailer and pull 4 dirt bikes or two snowmobiles with no worries. Right now, it's winter and this van loves it. It's so stable on ice and snow, and with good tires, it's even better. We ski at Little Cottonwood Canyon and chase wind for snowkiting, so we often drive in blizzards. The weight is well proportioned to its size, making it a smooth and reliable snowmobile. The gears work awesome, just put it in 1st or 2nd on steep snowy downhills and you barely need to use the brakes. I work on the Great Salt Lake and have to commute across a 15-mile dirt road which gets icy, horribly washboarded, and rutted this time of year. I set the cruise control at 45 and let the S-10 chassis do the work. Although I have had to replace the fuel pump and catalytic converter, which is normal stuff for its age, affordable parts and minimal labor made it no big deal. I highly recommend this van to all fun hogs, especially snow lovers!

Your grandfather gave you the van! That's so cool! Despite being 27 years old, it's still in good shape, although it needs a new rear end and some TLC. It runs and drives well and is very comfortable, although it doesn't have the greatest turn radius. Overall, it's a really nice vehicle!

I've had my van for 4 years and it was purchased with 52,000 miles. My Astro has been incredibly dependable. In the 4 years I've owned it, I've only had to spend $150.00 on repairs, and the engine has only lost 1% of its original compression power. I currently have 103,034 miles on it, and I'm excited to see it take me another 103,000 miles!

We purchased this van back in 2002. Although it is quite spacious, the foot areas for the driver and passenger could be a bit roomier. Nevertheless, it is a comfortable and easy-to-drive vehicle. The 2nd and 3rd seats are removable, but they can be quite heavy to take out. The only significant issue we have encountered is with the gas and electrical systems. Unfortunately, we only get 13-14 mpg and we have had some problems with the electric window and keyless remote system. Despite these minor setbacks, we have enjoyed our time with this van and would only consider trading it in for something else if absolutely necessary.
