Chevrolet Astro problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

I'm so glad you bought the Astro back in 1995! Even though things didn't go as planned and you still have it seven years later, it's amazing to hear that you haven't had to do anything major to it other than regular maintenance in the 126000 miles it's been driven. I love how the Astro sits up higher than most other vehicles, including other mini vans. It's so responsive and solid, and it's great to hear that it gets such good mileage on the highway - 20mpg is impressive! I'm also impressed that you've been able to camp in it with the back seats out, and that you and your son have driven it several times to Colorado to ski - just throwing everything, including downhill skis, in the back and going! It's clear that the Astro is a versatile and reliable vehicle that can handle anything you throw at it, and it's great that you get to drive it every day to work.

This is my fourth Astro in nine years, and I must say, each one has been better than the last. I've driven about 90,000 to 100,000 miles on the last three, and I'm already up to 1600 on my 2005 Astro. I absolutely love it!

This is my second Astro and it is incredibly capable of doing everything. With its truck frame, it can tow large campers with ease, and it gets an impressive 19 mpg on the highway for an AWD van/truck of this size. It handles snow and ice with ease, although strong winds can push it around a little on the interstate. At 119,000 miles, I finally had to replace something - the starter - which was very easy to replace myself. Changing the plugs isn't too bad if you pull the front wheel off. Overall, we absolutely love the (boxy) design, because you sit up so high and have a great view of what's going on in front of you. This van is better than any other minivan we have owned, including Mazda and Plymouth, and even better than our Toyota 4x4 pickup. We think it's a great van and would love to see it make a comeback!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my van. I purchased it used with 50,000 km and have added 60,000 km in the last two years. It's been a great highway vehicle; very comfortable, quiet, and with great visibility. It's also reasonably economical at highway speeds, which is a plus. One of my favourite things about it is its great capacity. It can easily accommodate up to 8 passengers with a full load, or it can be a very comfortable vehicle for 6 people with all their gear and 2 canoes on top. It's also great in deep snow, with its great clearance and 4 winter tires. In fact, it's my preferred vehicle for winter driving compared to my car. It's also perfect for comfortable drives and trips in the summer. The only downside is the intrusive wheel wells in the passenger compartment. Other than that, it has a conservative styling with simple clean lines, which I think looks great. Thanks for listening!

Your grandfather gave you the van! That's so cool! Despite being 27 years old, it's still in good shape, although it needs a new rear end and some TLC. It runs and drives well and is very comfortable, although it doesn't have the greatest turn radius. Overall, it's a really nice vehicle!

Take this van for what it is - roomy, practical, relatively inexpensive, no-frills transportation. Van has had its share of minor problems, most of them related to fit and finish items, but no problems with any major component (engine, transmission, electrical, etc.). It's great for towing light trailers and for long-distance hauling with a full load of kids and goodies. Plus, it gets decent gas mileage for its capabilities (16.0 - 21 mpg).

I rescued this astro van ext from the yard of my neighbor after he passed away. It had not been driven for three years. I replaced two freeze plugs, changed the oil, cleaned it up, and put it on the road. It drives and handles great. Here's the kicker, it has 260,956 miles and can out run my 1993 Toyota Corolla. I absolutely love this van!

The 4.3 engine is basically 'bullet proof' and the automatic transmission is good. However, the AWD system does consume more fuel compared to the two-wheel drive, resulting in a difference of about 5mpg.

I strongly advise against purchasing this van. Despite being garaged and driven mostly on highways, it has had numerous issues including the air conditioning breaking down twice, the motor needing replacement just six months after purchase, and the need for replacement of the front tierods and bushings. Additionally, the gas gauge does not work and the brakes had to be replaced last year. Although the serpentine belt was replaced a year ago, it still makes a loud noise and requires another replacement. Despite being a top-of-the-line model with TV and VCR, I purchased it new in 1997 for $28,900. In light of these issues, I cannot recommend the Astro to anyone.

This has been our trusty 'family truckster' for the past 10 years and 90K miles. It has pulled our camper halfway across the country and taken us on many long (13 hour drive) trips. It has only let us down twice - once for a fuel pump (which we managed to fix ourselves, no tow needed) and once with a cooling system blowout. Unfortunately, at 200K miles, it's now experiencing head gasket problems (which may have been present for a while), so it's time to retire it.
