The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

No problems in 4 years. Towed a 19' boat 2400 miles each year with no issues. The only downside is the small leg area in the front seat, which is why we are trading it. However, it rides great and the back seat is comfortable. The grandkids love the TV and VCR!

I had an astro before this one drove it for 10 years no problems except the sliding door locked and couldn't open inside or out. It made 24 MPG. Bought a new one because we liked the old one for the room (took out the seats and we could haul 4x8 sheets of plywood. They have good clearance and AWD grip the road when lots of snow and ice ( better than our 1/2 ton 4WD pickup) Also has 5000# tow capacity. But we were very disappointed with the gas mileage on the 2003. We lost 8 to 10 MPG can't understand what happened? It has the same engine as the old one and we drive it the same way.

Our first one was a 1988 Astro LT, and we were so impressed with the 4.3L engine that we had to get another one. As someone who fixes cars for a living, I can confidently say that this is the perfect van for my family.

Your 2000 Waldoch Astro sounds like a reliable vehicle! With almost 200,000 miles on it, it's impressive that you were able to drive your mom and two German Shepards to Vegas four times without any issues. It's understandable that you prefer your Astro over a rental car, especially after the rental car broke down in Colorado with only 2800 miles on it. It's great that you also have a Mercedes, even though it doesn't get much use. Your socialite neighbors may call your Astro a Dog Van, but your vanity Dog Van license plate was a clever idea!

We are currently enjoying our second Astro! We absolutely love the spaciousness, comfort, and ease of movement it provides. This is especially important when you have little kids in car seats and need to move quickly without tripping over a center console. We have found this van to be incredibly reliable, powerful, and easy to drive. It sits high, providing great visibility, and has plenty of cargo room. In our opinion, there simply isn't a minivan out there that can compare! It's like an SUV with a minivan price tag, better gas mileage, and superior maneuverability. We highly recommend the Astro to anyone who is economically minded and needs a reliable workhorse to transport their family.

In 2004, we purchased the '95 for $4000. It was equipped with A/C, AWD, and seating for 8. With our fourth child on the way, we needed a vehicle that could seat 6, which eliminated most of the cars we were considering. I really enjoyed this van, but it became expensive to maintain, and working under the hood was a real challenge due to the small engine compartment and the need to remove the 'dog house' in the interior to access anything. Mechanics tend to charge more for these types of vehicles because of the extra effort required to replace parts. Fortunately, I was able to do a lot of the work myself. Over the 5 years we owned it, I invested about $1000-1500 each year into it.

I would like to share my experience with the Astro. In my opinion, the Astro is a solid vehicle, especially if you have a generous extended factory warranty. Although I have had some reliability issues, such as replacing the front pads at 20K and experiencing bad ignition wires twice (one inside and one outside of the standard factory warranty period), I was fortunate enough to have the transmission issue resolved just before the warranty period ended at 35K miles.

I bought this car new 2 years ago. Unfortunately, it had to be taken to the shop every 2500 miles. The dealer consistently claimed that they couldn't pull diagnostics on it. The first time it broke down was close to home due to an alternator issue at 12000 miles. The second time was on the way to Santa Barbara, on the same day it left the dealership shop. The third and final time, I refused to drive it until the dealer experienced the loss of power. I kept telling them it was the transmission, but one week later they still claimed it drove perfectly for them. However, that same day, the transmission blew on the freeway at 30,000 miles. I was 8 months pregnant with 2 kids in my car. Unfortunately, Chevy's 1-800 customer service did nothing about all the problems, so I traded it for a Nissan. I hope Chevy can improve their quality control in the future.

It's such a shame that the build quality of the Astro isn't up to par, especially since it's such a great fit for families with diverse outdoor interests. Unfortunately, we had some issues with the vehicle and the dealer contesting warranty claims, but thankfully the extended warranty saved us from unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs. We had a particularly difficult experience with Security Chevrolet in Vista, California, which has since gone out of business.

The vehicle is reliable, roomy, and comfortable for kids. Although the driver's seat is a bit small, especially the left leg room, my wife, who is the main driver, loves it mostly for the great view of the road and the carrying capacity. The Dutch doors in the rear are nice; however, the weatherstripping needs to be replaced once every three years. The handling is fine for a truck chassis vehicle.
