Chevrolet Astro problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

I'm thrilled to share that I recently traded my 1995 AWD for a 2001 AWD Astro, and it's been a game-changer! The Astro is perfect for my needs, and I'm so impressed with how thoughtfully it's laid out. The seats are still a bit heavy to remove, but they're much lighter than my previous model. The driver controls are easy to reach and control, and the response to driver input is much improved. The van looks even more attractive than my previous model, thanks to the rocker arm mouldings. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase and plan to stick with the Astro/Safari for many years to come!

Congratulations on getting your van for your 60th birthday! It sounds like you had a great trip to Maine with your friends. Although you love your van, it would be even better if it had 4 doors. It's always nice to have more space for friends and family. It's amazing that you and your family have done a lot of traveling, especially with 21 years of military service. At 35000 miles/year, I am hard on a vehicle. Most of the miles were city driving(65-70%). I tend to wear brakes out faster than most people. However, the body integrity is excellent and there is not a single squeak or rattle for the first 80,000 miles. Even at 145K, it still runs quietly. There have been no motor or transmission problems and it can still go 3000 miles without burning a quart of oil!

Hi there! I've only had this van for a few months, but I've had experience with other Astros, as well as other brands for comparison. I think the Astro does a great job for what it was designed for. It may not be the most stylish, but it is definitely functional. It has adequate power delivery, although it may not be the most refined. It handles like a van, not a BMW, and rides like a truck, not a Buick, but it's perfect for hauling people and trailers. Plus, it gets decent fuel mileage! Overall, I think it makes a great work truck that can handle the abuse and punishment usually associated with work trucks.

Overall, we like this vehicle. Although we have had some minor issues such as the battery (which had to be replaced twice in two years, but the dealership took care of it), the motor in the door for the windows stopped working, and a clip that was attached to the motor that made the back window open broke, my husband was able to fix them all. However, we did notice that the van depreciated quite quickly. We paid $21,000 for it when it was less than a year old with very low miles, but it depreciated over $10,000 in just two years. We're not sure if it's because there are so many of them out there now, or for some other reason.

The Astro's greatest merit is its spacious interior, which comfortably accommodates up to 8 passengers and a considerable amount of cargo. Additionally, it is the only newer minivan capable of towing up to 4500 pounds. While it may not be the most exciting vehicle, it provides reliable and practical transportation. AWD, a common option, is particularly useful for driving in snow, although it unfortunately does not work in reverse and reduces mileage by 2 mpg. Expect an AWD model to achieve 13-17 mpg. The powertrain performance is adequate, although it may not feel particularly strong and can be noisy when pushed hard. While the seats are only moderately comfortable, they were improved in 2002. Overall, the Astro offers great value and practicality to owners who prioritize functionality over modern design and performance.

This van has had multiple issues since the beginning, including breakdowns on the freeway and the need for replacement parts such as the catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, and fuel pump. Despite these challenges, we were able to work with GM Customer Relations to resolve the issues and find solutions. While the ride may not have been as smooth as we would have liked, we appreciate the opportunity to have gained experience with this vehicle and look forward to exploring other options in the future.

Take this van for what it is - roomy, practical, relatively inexpensive, no-frills transportation. Van has had its share of minor problems, most of them related to fit and finish items, but no problems with any major component (engine, transmission, electrical, etc.). It's great for towing light trailers and for long-distance hauling with a full load of kids and goodies. Plus, it gets decent gas mileage for its capabilities (16.0 - 21 mpg).

I have loved this van. However, at about 100,000 miles, I began experiencing electrical issues such as intermittent turn signals, stalling without reason, and the fan turning on and off unexpectedly - particularly unpleasant in hot weather. Despite only having 125,000 miles on it, I have decided to sell it. I had hoped to get between 150,000 and 175,000 miles out of it.
