Chevrolet Astro problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

We bought our Astro in 2000 because we needed the extra space for our family. Despite being put through a lot, with 8 children and little time for maintenance, the van has held up remarkably well. It has handled every task we've thrown at it, from moving our furniture three times to towing heavy loads. We've had to replace a few parts, such as the fuel pump, water pump, and starter, but the original drivetrain has over 220,000 miles and is still going strong.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing van that I bought with only 30000 miles on it. Although I had a few minor issues during the first year, such as power lock failure, it has been running smoothly ever since. As a parent of 4 kids and a dog, I can't stress enough how much space this van has to offer. It's perfect for our family and we can even comfortably seat two more families and tow our 22-ft, 4000 lbs camper without any issues. We've even taken it halfway across the country! It's always funny to see people's surprised faces when they see us towing with it. We added a transmission cooler and complete tow package to make sure everything runs smoothly. It may not be the fanciest van out there, but it's definitely a great choice for larger, active families like ours.

We've owned two Astro Vans in a row since 1990 and they've been great in all kinds of weather and road conditions. The AWD is definitely the way to go. The only issue we've had is with the rear air conditioning, which has a line running from front to back that tends to wear at the brackets, costing close to $300 to fix. Other than that, if you take care of this vehicle, it's extremely dependable. We sold the 1990 to a couple with 125,000 miles on it and it's still in near-perfect shape. Even our auto repair shop was impressed with that van!

This is the third Astro we have owned. Currently, we are towing a 26.5ft travel trailer through the Midwest and we are happy to report that we have experienced no problems. It's important to drive responsibly and not expect to break any speed records, but we have found that the Astro is more than capable of handling our needs.

Your long term experience with this product is very good. It holds up very well and is built like a tank, with steel reinforcement behind plastic bumpers. The only item that needed to be replaced was the alternator.

Although the initial quality was acceptable, this vehicle did not hold its miles well. Despite all maintenance being done on schedule, after 60,000 miles, the vehicle seemed to be in self-destruct mode. The starter, battery, water pump, AC compressor, blower motor, rear wheel bearing, and transmission all needed repairs. Unfortunately, this experience was the last straw for me with the big three (GM, Ford, Chrysler). On the other hand, I never had any issues with my Hyundai, and I love my Honda even more. I hate to say it, but I believe our Union workers are overrated. However, I do believe that we can start building decent vehicles here in the USA if we abolish the Unions. Until then, Honda has my business. After all, they are over 75% USA or Canadian anyway.

I see that you purchased an Astro with 50,000 miles on it and have put 110,000 miles on it since then. That's impressive! It's great to hear that you haven't had any major problems with it, just some routine maintenance like brakes, tires, and fluids. You did a complete tune-up at 100,000 miles and it runs great. We purchased this vehicle from a frequent traveler when it had 98K miles on it. Over the years, we have put 271K miles on it and have had to replace the water pump, fuel pump, and transmission, among other things. However, we have not experienced any unexpected issues and the car still does not consume oil. It has been a reliable mode of transportation for our family of four and has even served as our trusty 'Mom wagon' for several years, accumulating 300 miles a week. Although it needs a new radiator and uses more gas than we would like at today's prices, everything still works and we are ready to let it go after a long and faithful service life. We definitely got our money's worth!

I would like to share my experience with the Astro. In my opinion, the Astro is a solid vehicle, especially if you have a generous extended factory warranty. Although I have had some reliability issues, such as replacing the front pads at 20K and experiencing bad ignition wires twice (one inside and one outside of the standard factory warranty period), I was fortunate enough to have the transmission issue resolved just before the warranty period ended at 35K miles.
