Chevrolet Astro problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Chevrolet Astro

How many miles can a Chevy Astro van last?

about 200,000 miles

The transmissions are good for about 200,000 miles if not overworked. They become rattle traps and start to disintegrate around the engine at about 350,000 miles although I have seen some with over 400,000 miles on them.

Are Astro Vans hard to work on?

Are Astro vans easy to work on? The Chevy Astro van is considered to be very easy to work on. These have the Chevrolet 4.3L V6 engine that is known to be very simple to service if any issues come up.

Why was the Chevy Astro discontinued?

The Astro was discontinued in 2005 because General Motors thought that they were not selling as well as they used to. The Astro was replaced by the Chevrolet Uplander, Chevrolet Traverse and the Chevrolet City Express.

Why are Astro Vans so popular?

The removable seats made the van especially popular with families. Sports gear, camping equipment, and so much more could fit into the cargo area with no problem. The back doors of the Astrovan were also something new and different.

Latest negative Chevrolet Astro car reviews

  1. Jeffry Lockman 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 1996

We purchased this van in 2002 for $10,000 when it had 50,000 miles on it. While we had hoped for a reliable vehicle given the price and mileage, unfortunately, it has been quite the opposite. We have had to spend thousands of dollars on repairs, including a new transmission, and it has broken down on us multiple times, even leaving us stranded hundreds of miles from home on two occasions. We strongly advise against purchasing this van as it has been a very unpleasant and stressful experience to own. The torsion bar has broken twice, which is also a problem that my friend experienced. One of the torsion bar incidents happened while I was driving on a crowded interstate at 70mph, on a bridge, with no place to pull over. Thankfully, I was able to remain calm and avoid an accident. Overall, we cannot recommend this vehicle due to the numerous issues we have experienced.

  2. Andy Halvorson 2025-03-19

    Vehicle year: 1995

In 2004, we purchased the '95 for $4000. It was equipped with A/C, AWD, and seating for 8. With our fourth child on the way, we needed a vehicle that could seat 6, which eliminated most of the cars we were considering. I really enjoyed this van, but it became expensive to maintain, and working under the hood was a real challenge due to the small engine compartment and the need to remove the 'dog house' in the interior to access anything. Mechanics tend to charge more for these types of vehicles because of the extra effort required to replace parts. Fortunately, I was able to do a lot of the work myself. Over the 5 years we owned it, I invested about $1000-1500 each year into it.

  3. Carmine Boehm 2025-03-17

    Vehicle year: 1999

Next time, I will replace the fuel pumps with Delco parts to avoid the inconvenience and expense of having to drop the fuel tank twice in 13 months, costing me almost $1400. Despite some transmission issues on long drives and electrical problems with the overhead lights flickering on and off while driving, the van still runs strong. Although there are some rattles from the van, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with proper maintenance.

  4. Olen Schulist 2025-03-15

    Vehicle year: 1995

I have loved this van. However, at about 100,000 miles, I began experiencing electrical issues such as intermittent turn signals, stalling without reason, and the fan turning on and off unexpectedly - particularly unpleasant in hot weather. Despite only having 125,000 miles on it, I have decided to sell it. I had hoped to get between 150,000 and 175,000 miles out of it.

  5. Khalid Quitzon 2025-03-15

    Vehicle year: 2000

I bought this car new 2 years ago. Unfortunately, it had to be taken to the shop every 2500 miles. The dealer consistently claimed that they couldn't pull diagnostics on it. The first time it broke down was close to home due to an alternator issue at 12000 miles. The second time was on the way to Santa Barbara, on the same day it left the dealership shop. The third and final time, I refused to drive it until the dealer experienced the loss of power. I kept telling them it was the transmission, but one week later they still claimed it drove perfectly for them. However, that same day, the transmission blew on the freeway at 30,000 miles. I was 8 months pregnant with 2 kids in my car. Unfortunately, Chevy's 1-800 customer service did nothing about all the problems, so I traded it for a Nissan. I hope Chevy can improve their quality control in the future.

I bought the Astro as a replacement for my 1989 Pajero. I wanted more height and space, and I have never regretted my decision. I drive it every day, rain or shine, and it performs exceptionally well. It has proven to be very reliable, and in almost a year, I have only needed a service and an alternator. I service it myself, which is not difficult as long as you have a set of tools and a means of getting access underneath (I put it on ramps). One of the other reviewers here says it's impossible to change the plugs, but I have to seriously disagree on that! With a pipe-type spanner and a screwdriver, it can be done in just a couple of minutes. My Astro has a high roof fitted, and it still manages to get 16 mpg. The engine is powerful, and it hauls great.

This is my 4th Astro but my first AWD. Even though the gas mileage is less with AWD, I find it holds the road better, especially on wet roads. I would definitely consider purchasing another one in the future.

The van was incredibly reliable, had plenty of power for the required task, and was extremely versatile - it could carry either 8 people or 3/4 ton of bagged concrete. The turning radius was fabulous for a van. The only drawback was that the paint degraded very quickly.

Our 4th Astro, obviously we like them. We chose the Astro over A-B'b the Caravan and Aerostar when we were in the market for a small van in 1985. I thought the Astro was the best choice then, and I still do now. It's a shame they're no longer made.

This is my 2nd Astro and both have been great! This one now has 200,000 miles and is still going strong. I have only needed to do minor repairs over the years, nothing out of the ordinary. In comparison, my husband's new car has needed more repairs in one year than my van has needed in five! I also get great mileage on this van, about 24 on the highway and 19 in town.
