Chevrolet Astro problems

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common Chevrolet Astro problems
Based on the information provided in the sources, here are common problems with Chevrolet Astro cars based on complaints from owners:
- Safety Concerns: The Chevrolet Astro van has faced safety criticisms, particularly related to crash performance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety highlighted the van's poor crash performance, indicating significant safety risks in the event of a collision.
- Structural Defects: Another recurring problem with Chevrolet Astro vans is related to structural defects. Specific recalls have been issued for certain models due to issues with running boards containing courtesy lights that could overheat, posing a risk of fire when exposed to excessive moisture and road salt.
- Interior Quality: Complaints have been made about the interior quality of Chevrolet Astro vans, including issues with cheap plastic materials and overall build quality.
These common problems reported by owners of Chevrolet Astro vans highlight various issues ranging from safety concerns to structural defects and interior quality problems.
How many miles can a Chevy Astro van last?
about 200,000 miles
The transmissions are good for about 200,000 miles if not overworked. They become rattle traps and start to disintegrate around the engine at about 350,000 miles although I have seen some with over 400,000 miles on them.
Are Astro Vans hard to work on?
Are Astro vans easy to work on? The Chevy Astro van is considered to be very easy to work on. These have the Chevrolet 4.3L V6 engine that is known to be very simple to service if any issues come up.
Why was the Chevy Astro discontinued?
The Astro was discontinued in 2005 because General Motors thought that they were not selling as well as they used to. The Astro was replaced by the Chevrolet Uplander, Chevrolet Traverse and the Chevrolet City Express.
Why are Astro Vans so popular?
The removable seats made the van especially popular with families. Sports gear, camping equipment, and so much more could fit into the cargo area with no problem. The back doors of the Astrovan were also something new and different.

We are currently enjoying our second Astro! We absolutely love the spaciousness, comfort, and ease of movement it provides. This is especially important when you have little kids in car seats and need to move quickly without tripping over a center console. We have found this van to be incredibly reliable, powerful, and easy to drive. It sits high, providing great visibility, and has plenty of cargo room. In our opinion, there simply isn't a minivan out there that can compare! It's like an SUV with a minivan price tag, better gas mileage, and superior maneuverability. We highly recommend the Astro to anyone who is economically minded and needs a reliable workhorse to transport their family.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Astro van. I bought it brand new and it has been such a reliable vehicle for me. The only issue I've had so far is with the locks, but that was an easy fix. I've kept up with regular maintenance and it has served me well. Even though the back door failed last year at 185,000 miles, I haven't had it fixed yet and it still runs great with almost 200,000 miles on it! It's amazing how it still has that get up and go, even after all those miles. I'm actually considering getting a newer one soon. Thanks for listening!

I'm in the market for a new car after owning my current one for a decade. I can't help but compare every option to my trusty Astro, which still looks almost new both inside and out. I've gone through four sets of tires in that time, but I'm impressed with how well it handles in wet and snowy conditions thanks to its AWD. The handling is a vast improvement over my previous car, an '89 Astro. While there have been some necessary repairs as the car has aged, they've been standard and expected. The check engine light has come on three times in a decade, and the stereo's lighting has burned out, but it still works perfectly. Overall, I'm grateful for the reliability and performance my Astro has provided me over the years, and I'm excited to find a new car that can live up to its legacy.

The LT option interior design is great. This is a very dependable vehicle, with no repairs necessary in the first 80,000 miles. It's great for hauling people and/or cargo. The ride has been vastly improved from earlier models. Astro's are truly 'Like a Rock'. In fact, my 1986 model Astro that I bought new has 335,000 miles on it with the original engine and transmission, and I haven't had to rebuild either one.

I'm glad to hear that you've had a positive experience with your new purchase! It seems like the fuel pump may be a common issue, but overall it's a big and comfortable car that's great for long drives. It's impressive that it never overheated in such extreme desert heat, and the A/C kept things cool inside. Your wife even prefers it over the Q45! If the reliability can match that of imports, you would definitely consider buying another one. It would be great if the warranty could be extended and parts prices lowered to make it even more appealing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

I have a 92 Astro that my colleagues and I affectionately call the 'Astroid'. Unfortunately, after reaching 120K miles, it has been in the shop multiple times and is no longer worth owning. The A/C and cruise control are no longer functional, and the brakes are overly sensitive, making it difficult to come to a smooth stop. However, it does have great gas mileage and a finely tuned stereo. It has been regularly serviced, including an oil change every 3,000 miles.

To change spark plugs, you'll need to remove the tires first. Then, you can access two of them through the hood and the other two from inside the engine hood. I understand that mechanics find them difficult to work with since it's hard to reach anything on the engine. I had to pay $150 for labor to put in a manifold gasket. Additionally, it doesn't have half the passing power of my 6-cylinder Dodge Caravan. Based on my experience, I wouldn't consider purchasing another one.

We have owned an Astro since 1999, bought at 2K miles. Unfortunately, we have had to pay for multiple repairs since then, some of which have been for the same issue. If I were to put together all of the repair receipts, the total might even surprise us. It's important to watch out for idler arm problems, which seem to be a recurring issue due to poor design. Additionally, we've experienced some electrical system problems, as well as issues with little motors and switches. In contrast, we also own Toyota products, which have required significantly less expensive and redundant repairs. It's always good to be aware and cautious!

We bought our Chevy truck used from a dealer and have never regretted it. Although the 93's rattle here and there and have a stiff truck-like ride, we wanted and got a solid vehicle that can handle towing a boat and utility trailer. The 4.3 engine provides great power that will put you back against the seat when you need it. We've only had to replace the original fuel filter and battery, and the exhaust once. We also had new brakes and shocks installed 2 years ago. Even with 147,000 miles, it still gets close to 25 mpg on the freeway at 60 mph with cruise control. We love our Astro and wouldn't be surprised to see it top 250,000 miles before it's ready for the scrap heap!

We absolutely adore our AWD Astro! It has taken us on countless adventures, from towing our camper over the Rockies to navigating Jeep trails in the mountains. It's incredibly versatile and has never let us down. While the front foot room is a bit tight, that's a common issue with all vans. With AWD and ABS, it's hands down the best vehicle we've ever had for driving in snow and ice. Even with 125K miles, it still only burns a quart between oil changes and gets a respectable 14-19 mpg. It's such a shame that they're discontinuing it. We're holding onto ours for dear life because we can't find another one with the same setup.
