1999 Chevrolet Astro problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common 1999 Chevrolet Astro problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Astro 1999, several common problems have been reported:
- Distributor Drive Gear Wear: Some owners have noticed excessive wear on the distributor drive gear over time, leading to the need for distributor replacements at higher mileage points. This issue has been reported in both 2000 and 2002 Astro models, potentially affecting the engine's performance and reliability.
- Transmission Problems: While not specific to the 1999 model, transmission issues are common in Chevrolet Astro vans. Transmission failures can result in gear shifting problems, loss of power, and ultimately, the inability to drive the vehicle. It is crucial to inspect the transmission thoroughly when considering purchasing a used Astro van.
- Rust Problems and Fluid Leaks: Rust problems and fluid leaks are significant concerns in older Astro vans. Rust can weaken the vehicle's structure, leading to safety hazards and costly repairs. Fluid leaks, especially from the transmission or engine, can indicate underlying mechanical issues that need immediate attention to prevent further damage.
- Brake System Control Unit Failure: The ABS light may illuminate due to brake system control unit failure. This can compromise the vehicle's braking system, affecting its safety and performance. Addressing this issue promptly is essential to ensure proper brake function and driving safety.
These common problems with the Chevrolet Astro 1999 highlight the importance of regular maintenance, thorough inspections before purchasing a used vehicle, and addressing any issues promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
How long does a Chevy Astro engine last?
These engines are extremely reliable and long lasting as long as they receive basic maintenance. I have seen many 4.3 L V6 is with well over 300,000 miles on them. Ultimately a Chevy Astro can make it that far and although still running it will start falling apart around the engine.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-07-08
- VIN: 1GCDM19W7XB
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I HAVE 2- CHEVY ASTRO VANS. 1-1998, 1-1999. THE 1999 HAS CORRODED BRAKE LINES AND GAS LINES. THE MAIN BRAKE LINES ARE CORRODED INTO. I WAS COMING BACK FROM A LONG TRIP YESTERDAY AND I NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES WERE SOFT. WHEN I GOT HOME UPON INSPECTION I CHECKED THE BREAK FLUID AND IT WAS LOW. I FILLED IT. I NOTICED A PUDDLE OF FLUID BY THE BACK TIRE. AND LOOKED, I DISCOVERED ALL OF THE BRAKE AND GAS LINES WERE EAT UP WITH CORROSION. GM NEEDS TO TAKE THIS AS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM AND FIX IT IMMEDIATELY. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED , OR I COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE IF THE BRAKES FAILED TO HOLD. I INSPECTED THE 1998 ASTRO VAN TO SEE IF IT HAD A PROBLEM TO. AND UPON DOING SO DISCOVERED IT IS FINE, NO PROBLEMS. I HAVE PICS OF BOTH VANS THE PICS WILL SHOW THAT MY STATEMENT IS TRUE. I BOUGHT THE 1999 VAN (THE ONE WITH CORRODED LINES) IN THE STATE OF OHIO. AND I BOUGHT THE 1998 VAN IN ALABAMA.I DO NOT KNOW WHY THIS IS, BUT I KNOW I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH A FAULTY GM PRODUCT WITH CORROSIVE BRAKE AND GAS LINES. I AM VERY THANKFUL I DISCOVERED THIS BEFORE TRAGEDY HAPPENED. THIS IS A POTENTIAL DEADLY PROBLEM, AND GM NEEDS TO RESOLVE THIS BEFORE SOMEONE LOOSES THEIR LIFE, NOT AFTER. ANY HELP WITH GETTING THIS RESOLVED IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! I JUST WANT TO LET UNSUSPECTING GM OWNERS KNOW ABOUT THIS DANGER! *TR

- Summary: HAD CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED PRIOR TO ENTERING A REDUCED SPEED AREA AND IT FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. AFTER DEPARTING THE REDUCED SPEED AREA, I ENGAGED THE RESUME FUNCTION AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED PAST THE SET SPEED AND KEPT SPEEDING UP. I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE WITH BRAKES ALTHOUGH THEY GOT VERY HOT AND SMOKED SEVERELY. ATTEMPTS TO TURN OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL FAILED, AS WELL AS TURNING OFF AND REMOVING THE KEYS FROM THE IGNITION. AFTER SUCCESSFULLY STOPPING THE VEHICLE, I CONTINUED ATTEMPTS TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL BUT ANY ATTEMPT TO START THE ENGINE RESULTED IN IMMEDIATE RACING OF THE ENGINE. I EXAMINED THE OWNER'S MANUAL AND DISCOVERED THAT FUSE NUMBER 6 WAS LABELED "CRUISE MODULE, CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH, ELECTROMECHANICAL MIRROR". THE FUSE WAS REMOVED BUT THE ENGINE RACED UPON ATTEMPTING TO START IT. I THEN DISCOVERED THAT FUSE NUMBER 18 WAS LABELED "VCM-IGN 3, VCM-BRAKE, 4WAL, CRUISE STEPPER MOTOR SIGNAL". UPON REMOVING THIS FUSE, I WAS ABLE TO START THE ENGINE, AND IT REMAINED IN NORMAL PARAMETERS. I DID NOTICE THAT THE ANTILOCK LIGHT WAS ON, BUT BELIEVE THIS IS RELATED TO THE VCM-BRAKE LABEL ON THE CIRCUIT BREAKER. I WAS THEN ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE HOME, AND WILL BE CONTACTING THE REPAIR SHOP TO DISABLE/REMOVE THE CRUISE STEPPER MOTOR, AS I REFUSE TO CHANCE ANOTHER UNINTENDED ACCELERATION EVENT. *TR

NO ONE WAS INJURED. IT COST $300 TO GET THE POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACED AND ANOTHER $75 JUST TO REPLACE THE RADIATOR FAN AND SHROUD SO THE VEHICLE COULD BE MADE DRIVABLE AGAIN. AFTER CONTACTING SEVERAL SERVICE AGENCIES I FIND THAT THE BRAKE BOOST SYSTEM HAS BEEN INCORPORATED INTO THE POWER STEERING PUMP, HENCE, IF YOU LOSE YOUR POWER STEERING, YOU LOSE YOUR BRAKES! I CONTACTED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE (CASE #1-383499552) AND THEIR ANSWER WAS, "YOU SHOULD STILL HAVE SOME BRAKES IF YOU PUSH HARD ENOUGH." I'M 5'10" TALL AND WEIGH 200 LBS. I HAD BOTH FEET PUSHING ON THE PEDAL TRYING TO STOP. IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THIS HAPPENED TO SOMEONE IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC OR IF THEY WERE COMING OFF OF THE INTERSTATE AT 70 MILES PER HOUR TRYING TO STOP THEIR VEHICLE. GM NEEDS TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS HAPPENING. NOTHING IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL ABOUT IT. WE WOULD ALSO LIKE GM TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGES TO OUR VEHICLE CAUSED BY US NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP. *NM

Negative 1999 Chevrolet Astro car reviews
Positive 1999 Chevrolet Astro car reviews

We bought this van for our two growing kids and it has been great! There is plenty of room for everyone and it even came with a TV/VCR for those long road trips. Overall, it has been a solid and dependable choice.

You have a 1998 Astro that is in great condition. It's important to maintain any car you buy, for example, never miss an oil change, check tires, brakes, fluid levels regularly, and keep it clean. You have driven about 70,000 km and the engine runs great. The gas tank is 90L and you use nothing but high grade fuel. It's true that the air filters get dirty fast, but you put a fine net around the opening and it stays clean for longer. The body design is great and the paint is of good quality. Although the seats inside could be more comfortable, overall it's a nice car. The 8 speaker 500 watt stock sound system is really nice! If Chevy had to make one improvement, I would suggest improving the performance.

Replacing tie rod ends every 40K or less and going through many sets of tires is common for these vans. Unfortunately, the 50K tires I purchased failed about 50% of the expected life and prorating them resulted in no compensation. Ball joints typically need replacement around 100K. Additionally, it's important to replace the cap and rotor every 12-15K miles to ensure the vehicle starts properly. While the doghouse can be difficult to remove to work on the engine, it's not too challenging. Changing plugs can be a chore, especially the driver's side one which is very difficult to access. I purchased my 1991 van with 100K miles and it still runs fine with no issues at 270K miles. I replaced the alternator twice as a preventative measure due to some noise, as well as the fuel pump, water pump, and brakes (typical wear items). The heater core started leaking and I replaced it myself many years ago. There is a very small amount of oil consumption and leakage under the vehicle between oil changes, which is less than many new vehicles. The rims are rusting out and developing slow leaks, as is the underbody. I have already replaced one rim. The original exhaust is still intact! It's not a great turning (handling) vehicle when compared to a full-sized Avalanche or equivalent, and there's not a lot of legroom, but it's good enough for me (I am 6' 2”). Recently, the check engine light came on because the anti-lock brakes are not working, but I don't need this fancy anti-lock system and find simplicity is best. The A.C died many years ago and there is minimal heat due to gunk in the radiator (which has been flushed many times), but now there is a leak in the radiator and it cannot be flushed or pressurized. It must be near the top of the water line because I only add about one cup of water per year, and it does not leak. This is more of a truck than a minivan for the wife, but it does great in winter and is super handy for homeowners who need to haul replacement water heaters or washer/dryers. Overall, this is a great, reliable vehicle that I love and will miss dearly if and when I decide to part with it.I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned you're thinking of a Chevy Avalanche to replace your current vehicle someday. That's a great choice! Let me know if you need any help with your search.

I have been the proud owner of this vehicle for 9.9 years. Although I have had to spend a few hundred dollars to fix the rear a/c and transmission, I have found that it is easy on tires and brakes, and the replacement battery has been working well so far. Recently, I took it on a 900 mile trip and was pleased to find that it got over 21 mpg and had plenty of room for all my belongings without feeling cluttered. The interior has held up excellently, with the exception of the recliner levers. Overall, it is a solid, quiet, roomy, and economical vehicle. I would caution against expecting a high resale value, unless you are purchasing a used one.

Compared to some on here, I consider myself lucky. In the 9 years since I bought my van new, I have not spent more than $600 on repairs. Although it has been less reliable than my previous Astro in some ways, the interior and paint have held up great. There are no rattles, fade, or things getting loose, and the engine runs like new. On trips, it gets an impressive 23 mpg. However, I did have to repair the transmission for $170 and the rear A/C line for $350. The water pump also needed replacement at 80k, which was not very impressive. Additionally, the battery was defective and died from terminal rot out disease that was designed into it to save a few cents. Although road handling is a weak spot, overall, I am happy with my van.

I bought this van because of its size, but unfortunately, it has had many problems. The window switches, door locks, door opener, and calipers have all had to be replaced, and all of these issues occurred before the van had even reached 36,000 miles. The most recent problem was with the differential, which had to be replaced at 38,000 miles. This is unheard of according to many mechanics. Unfortunately, GM would only cover half of the total cost to replace it, and the executive office stated that they could not help me since I did not use the dealer to service it all the time. I am frustrated that I would have to pay the dealer twice the amount for a simple oil change.

This car has had a poor track record with multiple brake replacements, idle arm replacements, tire replacements, water pump replacements, and now a catalytic converter replacement. Additionally, the lack of A/C in the back causes discomfort for passengers in the summer, and the car has poor gas mileage, making it expensive to maintain. The door handles have also broken and the passenger side no longer locks. It is clear that this car is not a suitable choice for this mom.

This is my fourth Chevy. Although I have had two major repairs on this van, both on family trips out of state, I have enjoyed driving it. Around 20K I had the transmission rebuilt, and at 56K I had the alternator replaced twice. It was a bit of a challenge driving across SC and GA on a 90+ degree day with a failing alternator and no a/c, but I managed. I have had some issues with cruise control, power locks, windows, mirrors, etc., but overall it has been a good experience. I hope Chevy continues to improve their reliability, but for now, I am considering other options.

I've owned this same vehicle for the past 6.5 years and have taken it on many long distance trips. I've found it to be quite exceptional - it's very comfortable and roomy, making it perfect for kids moving about and for extra storage.

I really enjoy the all wheel drive during the winter. I have heard that the windshields on these vehicles tend to leak, but we purchased the extended warranty just in case. Additionally, I have heard that the fuel injectors on this engine have had some issues. Despite this, if I were to purchase another van, it would still be an Astro. I'm not a big fan of compact mini vans and I really appreciate the power of the V-6 engine.
