Chevrolet Astro 1991 problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common Chevrolet Astro 1991 problems
Common Problems with the Chevrolet Astro 1991
- Engine Problems: The 1997 Chevrolet Astro Van has the most overall complaints, with the most-reported problem being with the 1999 model for "runs roughly, misfires". The average cost to fix this issue is $2,000, with an average mileage of 62,000 miles. The 1997 model year is rated as worse due to higher repair costs or more problems at lower mileage.
- Fuel Issues: Fuel-related problems are common in the Chevrolet Astro. One owner reported jump-starting the van, which melted the 4-prong connector behind the battery. The van then died due to no fuel pressure. The fuel filter was jammed with black flecks, and the fuel pump was replaced, but it was installed incorrectly, causing fuel to be delivered back into the tank.
- Ignition Control Module Failure: The ignition control module can fail, causing intermittent starting problems. This issue was reported by a 1989 Astro owner, who had to replace the module after it failed completely.
- Electrical Issues: Electrical problems can also be common in the Chevrolet Astro. One owner reported that the van had no lights or fuel pump, which was traced to a melted electrical connector behind the battery.
- Safety Concerns: The Chevrolet Astro has received a one-star crash test rating by the NHTSA, with a concerning safety concern reported for this vehicle. While it may not be rated as the safest vehicle, it is reportedly very reliable and durable enough for big families.
- Catalytic Converter and O2 Sensor Failure: The catalytic converter and at least two O2 sensors can fail, causing the engine to run rich due to inaccurate information being sent from the sensors. This issue can cause a loud one-time knock sound intermittently.
In summary, the Chevrolet Astro 1991 has several common problems, including door handle failure, engine problems, fuel issues, ignition control module failure, electrical issues, safety concerns, and catalytic converter and O2 sensor failure. These issues can be costly to repair and may affect the reliability and safety of the vehicle.

These engines are extremely reliable and long lasting as long as they receive basic maintenance. I have seen many 4.3 L V6 is with well over 300,000 miles on them. Ultimately a Chevy Astro can make it that far and although still running it will start falling apart around the engine.

The Astro has been very good to us. We live in Canada and our winters can be harsh, but it still works great. It's on its 2nd motor, but what can you expect with over 450,000 kms on it? It feels solid when you drive it, not like the other mini vans, and the rear wheel drive uses time-proven technology. We love it and would buy another.
-
This van is a great choice for anyone looking for a dependable and spacious vehicle. The air conditioner works really well and keeps the interior ice cold. The rear seats can be removed easily, although they are a little heavy. On the highway, it gets an impressive 20-22 mpg. The controls on the dashboard are laid out very well and the engine power is good. The ride is smooth and comfortable, and the driver's seat adjusts well for shorter drivers. The cruise control works well too. While there have been a couple of minor issues, such as occasionally blowing the radio fuse and the side door locking on its own, overall this is a great van. It's worth noting that this particular model does not have power locks, but a body shop man showed me how to trip the lock mechanism, unlock it, and thus make it shut.
-
Our Astro van has been a highly functional addition to our family. It has served us well for camping, towing, cross-country travel, and moving cargo. The 4.3L engine is just right for our needs, and the size is excellent - most minivans are too small. In fact, my daughter is about to inherit the Astro van as her first car! While I do wish that General Motors would pay more attention to details, such as the rear heater that had to be disconnected after about 5 years of ownership, we have been very happy with our Astro van overall.

I've had my Astro for 8 years now and it's been a really great car! Even though it was reconditioned after a wreck, it's still been running smoothly. Unfortunately, this year it burned a valve in the head of the engine and is running rougher. However, my father likes it so much he said he'll keep it and put in a newer engine.
-
Hi there! I just wanted to share with you how much I love my Astro van. I've been driving it since I bought it brand new in 1990 and it's been my trusty companion ever since. I even took it on a 1500-mile trip the day after I bought it and it performed like a champ! With 193,000 miles on it, I've only needed to do routine maintenance and the AWD has saved me a few times. It's now getting about 22 to 24 miles per gallon on the highway, so I just can't bear to part with it.

At 98000 miles the hydraulic control system for the ABS malfunctioned with an estimated repairs of $2500. At 120000 miles the automatic transmission is slipping from 2nd to 3rd gear and the recommended replacement of a rebuilt transmission would cost $3500. Exterior paint has been gradually peeling off at less than 8 years old.
