1993 Chevrolet Astro problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common 1993 Chevrolet Astro problems

The 1993 Chevrolet Astro is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. The door handles may break due to wear and tear or exposure to harsh weather conditions, making it difficult to open the doors from the outside.

Another common problem with the 1993 Chevrolet Astro is engine stalling. This issue can be caused by various factors, including problems with the fuel system, air intake system, or ignition system. Engine stalling can be dangerous, especially when driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic, as it can lead to accidents.

The 1993 Chevrolet Astro also has electrical problems, particularly when it rains for an extended period. Weird things can happen to the electrical system, such as the door locks locking and unlocking on their own or the fan and A/C cycling. Additionally, some owners have reported missing high beams, which can be a safety hazard when driving at night.

Furthermore, the 1993 Chevrolet Astro has a concerning fuel system, which can lead to poor fuel efficiency and engine performance issues. The fuel system can also cause engine stalling, which can be dangerous, as mentioned earlier.

Lastly, the 1993 Chevrolet Astro has a one-star crash test rating by the NHTSA, which is a significant safety concern for owners and their families. This rating indicates that the Astro is not as safe as other vehicles in the event of a crash, which can lead to more severe injuries or fatalities.

In summary, the 1993 Chevrolet Astro has several common problems, including breaking door handles, engine stalling, electrical issues, fuel system problems, and poor crash test ratings. These issues can affect the safety, reliability, and overall performance of the vehicle, making it essential for owners to address them promptly to ensure their safety and the longevity of their Astro.

1993 Chevrolet Astro engine

How long does a Chevy Astro engine last?

These engines are extremely reliable and long lasting as long as they receive basic maintenance. I have seen many 4.3 L V6 is with well over 300,000 miles on them. Ultimately a Chevy Astro can make it that far and although still running it will start falling apart around the engine.

Is Chevy Astro reliable?

Are Chevy Astro vans reliable? Chevy Astro vans tend to be very reliable. These vans were built primarily for commercial use and they have the same reliability and longevity that you would expect from other commercial trucks and vans. If you take care of them they should have no problem lasting over 200,000 miles.

How many miles per gallon does a Chevy Astro?

Based on data from 25 vehicles, 1,640 fuel-ups and 464,788 miles of driving, the 2000 Chevrolet Astro gets a combined Avg MPG of 15.10 with a 0.18 MPG margin of error. Below you can see a distribution of the fuel-ups with 120 outliers (6.82%) removed.

Why are Astro vans so popular?

The removable seats made the van especially popular with families. Sports gear, camping equipment, and so much more could fit into the cargo area with no problem. The back doors of the Astrovan were also something new and different.

Why was the Astro van so popular?

The Astro was the first van that offered rear-wheel drive. This drivetrain was standard, and there was the option to get an all-wheel drive. At the time, no other minivan of any sort offered these choices, and it made the Astrovan stand out. It also added to the ability to tow larger loads well.

What happened to the Chevy Astro?

The Astro was discontinued in 2005 because General Motors thought that they were not selling as well as they used to. The Astro was replaced by the Chevrolet Uplander, Chevrolet Traverse and the Chevrolet City Express.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-01-15
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: BOTH FRONT POWER DOOR LOCKS ON DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE MALFUNCTION INTERMITTENTLY FROM INSIDE OF VEHICLE REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. SECONDARY PROBLEM IS THE BATTERY DRAINING IF LEFT MORE THAN 24 HOURS WITHOUT BEING STARTED. BOTH BATTERIES ARE ONE YEAR OLD, IN GOOD CONDITION, AND ARE THE RIGHT TYPE. THE MAIN BATTERY DRAINS FIRST, SO WHEN THE AUXILIARY BATTERY IS STILL STRONG, THE ENGINE WILL START. I FEEL THAT THE CAUSE OF THE BATTERY/BATTERIES DRAINING IS NOT THE BATTERIES THEMSELVES BUT ANOTHER SOURCE, POSSIBLY THE FRONT POWER DOOR LOCKS. THE INTERIOR LIGHTS OR EXTERIOR LIGHTS ARE NOT THE SOURCE OF POWER THAT IS DRAINING THE BATTERY/BATTERIES. THIS VEHICLE IS USED AND OWNED BY A DISABLED PERSON IN A WHEELCHAIR. THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN AUXILIARY BATTERY TO ACCOMMODATE A WHEELCHAIR LIFT, DRIVER'S POWER SEAT, AND POWER SLIDING DOOR. *TR

Negative 1993 Chevrolet Astro car reviews

  1. Samir Skiles 2024-09-07

I have a 92 Astro that my colleagues and I affectionately call the 'Astroid'. Unfortunately, after reaching 120K miles, it has been in the shop multiple times and is no longer worth owning. The A/C and cruise control are no longer functional, and the brakes are overly sensitive, making it difficult to stop smoothly. However, it does have good gas mileage and a finely tuned stereo. It has been regularly serviced, including an oil change every 3,000 miles.

  2. Rocky Romaguera 2024-05-24

Your Astro sounds like a fantastic vehicle! It's great to hear that it has held up so well over the years. Although it needed some repairs along the way, it's impressive that it still looks and drives wonderfully with no rust. Keeping the carpet covered was a smart move to keep it looking new. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with your Astro!

  3. Jeffrey Stokes 2024-03-15

We've had Bertha for eight years and she's been a real trooper. She's carried kids, dogs, lumber, trash, and everything in between without a single complaint. With over 170,000 miles on her, we plan to keep her until the wheels fall off!

  4. Bobbie Hoppe 2024-02-09

Although my experience with this van has been disappointing, I have learned a valuable lesson about the importance of researching before making a purchase. While it is understandable that a 1993 vehicle may not be in perfect condition, I was surprised by the extent of the issues I encountered. In contrast, my Subaru with 260,000 miles has been reliable with only minor maintenance required. Despite my initial assumptions, this van has required significant investment and I have decided to sell it.

  5. Preston Hirthe 2024-01-26

To change spark plugs, you'll need to remove the tires first. Then, remove two plugs through the hood and two through the inside engine hood. Mechanics often find this task challenging because it's difficult to access the engine. Additionally, replacing the manifold gasket can cost up to $150 in labor. However, I have found that this car doesn't have the same passing power as my 6-cylinder Dodge Caravan. Overall, I wouldn't purchase this car again.

Positive 1993 Chevrolet Astro car reviews

  1. Stephen Hane 2024-09-13

This little truck has 165,000 miles on it now and the only major expense I've had was when the A/C went out (while towing a U-haul). All I've ever had to do is regular oil changes and maintenance. It's been dependable to a fault. This truck made 10 trips hauling trailers between Atlanta and New Orleans after Katrina. My house was a total loss but the Astro was something I could depend on. Unless you've been in that position, you have no idea how important such dependability is. I would strike out across the country in this without a worry. I'll keep this until the wheels fall off...and then buy new wheels.

  2. Julius Pfeffer 2024-07-21

I bought the Astro as a replacement for my 1989 Pajero. I wanted more height and space, and I have never regretted my decision. I drive it every day, rain or shine, and it performs exceptionally well. It has proven to be very reliable, and in almost a year, I have only needed a service and an alternator. I service it myself, which is not difficult as long as you have a set of tools and a means of getting underneath (I use ramps). One of the other reviewers mentioned that changing the plugs is impossible, but I have to disagree. With a pipe-type spanner and a screwdriver, it can be done in just a couple of minutes. My Astro has a high roof fitted, but it still manages to get 16 mpg. The engine is powerful, and it hauls great.

  3. Alfred Hintz 2024-07-17

I've had my Astro for 8 years now and it's been a really great car! Even though it was reconditioned after a wreck, it's still been running smoothly. Unfortunately, this year it burned a valve in the head of the engine and is running rougher. However, my father likes it so much he said he'll keep it and put in a newer engine.

  4. Columbus Lind 2024-07-02

The Astro has been very good to us. We live in Canada and our winters can be harsh, but it still works great. It's on its 2nd motor, but what can you expect with over 450,000 kms on it? It feels solid when you drive it, not like the other mini vans, and the rear wheel drive uses time-proven technology. We love it and would buy another.

  5. Alexander Kiehn 2024-06-25

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I absolutely adore my van that I purchased from Bayou Chevrolet back in 1988. It's a 1989 model, and it's been such a reliable vehicle for me. I'm so grateful for it!
