1996 Chevrolet Astro problems

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-06-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GNEL19W9TB
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT WHAT I FEEL IS/WAS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT WITH MY 1996 CHEVROLET ALL WHEEL DRIVE ASTRO VAN [XXX]. RECENTLY WHILE DRIVING THE RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION TORSION BAR SNAPPED, COLLAPSING THE SUSPENSION, DROPPING THE ENTIRE RIGHT SIDE ON TOP OF THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND TIRE PULLING DRASTICALLY TO THE RIGHT ACROSS 2 LANES OF TRAFFIC. FORTUNATELY TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT, AND I WAS TRAVELING AT A SLOW SPEED -ABOUT 40 KM/HR IN A POSTED 50KM ZONE AS I HAD JUST ENTERED THE 4-LANE ROADWAY. I MANAGED TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VAN AND STEER IT TO THE SIDE OF THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE ROAD. I SHUDDER AT THE THOUGHT IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY OR FREEWAY. THE LICENSED JOURNEYMAN MECHANIC THAT LOOKED AT THE VAN INDICATED THIS WAS QUITE COMMON ON 90-96 ALL WHEEL DRIVE VANS STATING THAT THE TORSION BAR ACTUALLY RUSTS OR CORRODES AT ALMOST THE EXACT SAME SPOT (NEAR THE ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY) AND EVENTUALLY SNAPS COMPLETELY BREAKING THE TORSION BAR INTO 2 PIECES! WHILE HE MENTIONED IT WAS USUALLY THE DRIVER'S SIDE (MINE WAS PASSENGER SIDE) HE INDICATED GM HAD RECOGNIZED THE PROBLEM AND ACTUALLY COMPLETELY CHANGED THE DESIGN OF BOTH THE TORSION BAR AND THE ADJUSTER MECHANISM! HOWEVER AFTER CONTACTING A COUPLE OF LOCAL GM DEALERS, THEY ALL TOLD ME WAS THAT THIS WAS NOT A PRODUCT SERVICE BULLETIN RELATED ITEM OR AN OFFICIAL SAFETY RECALL! YET THEY ALL HAD HEARD OF IT AND JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE ALL OF THE PARTS IN STOCK TO THE TUNE OF $1000 (YOU HAVE TO REPLACE BOTH SIDES WITH THE REDESIGNED ITEMS). I FOUND IT SURPRISING THAT THEY JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE 6 TORSION BARS AND 6 ADJUSTERS IN-STOCK; WHEN I RECENTLY HAD TO SPECIAL ORDER THE REAR DOOR HANDLE THAT HAD BROKEN. I WAS TOLD THEY ONLY STOCK COMMONLY REPLACED ITEMS AT THAT TIME. THE FACT THAT IT WAS REDESIGNED TELLS ME SOMETHING. A COMPONENT THAT IS SUBJECT TO WEAR SHOULD HAVE SOME SORT OF PUBLISHED INSPECTION PROCESS, WEAR MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE OR EVEN A REGULARLY SCHEDULED REPLACEMENT INTERVAL. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-07-29
  • VIN: 1GNEL19W6TB
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: MY WIFE WENT TO MOVE OUR 1996 CHEVROLET ASTRO VAN AND WHEN SHE BACKED UP THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE WAS RUBBING ON THE WHEEL WELL. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION IT WAS DETERMINED THAT ONE OF THE TORSION BARS BROKE. *AK WHEN I CALLED MY LOCAL DEALER I FOUND THE PARTS WERE READILY AVAILABLE BUT I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE BOTH SIDES BECAUSE THEY HAD BEEN "UPDATED". THE PARTS ALONE WERE OVER $500.00. WHEN I REMOVED THE OLD TORSION BARS I FOUND OUT WHAT HAD CAUSED IT TO BREAK, THE RECEIVER TUBE THAT THE END OF THE BAR WENT INTO HAD FILLED WITH DIRT AND ROAD CRUDE CAUSING THE BAR TO RUST AND EVENTULLY BREAK. THIS OCCURED FOUR DAYS BEFORE WE WERE LEAVING ON A 2500 MILE TRIP. IF THIS HAD OCCURED WHEN WE WERE GOING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT 75MPH OR IN THE MOUNTAINS WHILE ON VACATION IT COULD HAVE BEEN DIASATEROUS. MY LAST COMPLAINT IS THAT I WAS REQUIRED TO REPLACE BOTH TORSION BARS BECAUSE THE NEW ONE WOULD NOT MATCH THE OLD. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO REPLACE SOMETHING THAT IS NOT BROKEN AND IF THEY DO REQUIRE YOU TO DO SO THE MANUFACTURER IS ADMITTING THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE OLD DESIGN. I CHECKED IN YOUR RECORDS AND FOUND THAT THE ASTRO AND SAFARI VANS BUILT FROM 1992-1996 HAD ALMOST 200 CASES OF THESE TORSION BARS BREAKING AND A COMPLAINT BEING FILED. WHO KNOWS HOW MANY OTHER ONES HAVE BROKEN AND GONE UNREPORTED.THE 1997 MODELS DID NOT SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY CAME OUT WITH THE UPDATED PARTS.

Negative 1996 Chevrolet Astro car reviews

Although this vehicle has great potential, it has unfortunately been plagued with a number of issues over the years. Despite my best efforts to fix them, the problems have continued to pile up, including broken power windows, a faulty wiper motor, a growling transmission, and a malfunctioning A/C that has been out of commission for three years. However, I must say that the vehicle's size is perfect for my needs, as it is larger than a mini but smaller than a full-sized van, and I can even fit a full-sized piece of plywood inside with all of the doors closed. If only it were more reliable, I would have happily purchased another one.

The engine and transmission have been great. After 100,000 miles, the engine runs smoothly, and doesn't burn any oil. However, the motors for the power windows go out regularly, and the sensors for the ABS system are also not reliable. On the bright side, the body has been solid, with very few rattles even after 100,000 miles.

Since 1996, we have taken our van on 8 trips of approximately 3200 miles from Edmonton, Alberta to Las Vegas. With the exception of two trips, we only used the van for normal city driving in Canada. Almost 50% of the mileage comes from these eight return trips on expressways. We have a detailed maintenance record available, including tire replacements at approximately 8900 miles, brake replacements about 3 years ago, air-conditioning repairs, rear hydraulic lift and front end alignment completed in 2001. Although the windshield has a crack and there are several scratches and dimples on the 'autumn brown' rust-free exterior, the van is in good condition overall.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1995 Astro van. I've owned a couple of Chrysler 'Magic Wagons' before, but the Astro has been a game-changer for me. It's got so much more room, power, and has been incredibly reliable. Surprisingly, it uses no more fuel than my 1993 Grande Voyager did. The only thing to keep in mind is that it's built on a truck chassis, so the ride and handling are a bit more truck-like than the Chrysler product. I know some auto mags have given the Astro and Safari a bad rap because of fuel economy, but I have 276,000km on mine and it's still running strong. In fact, many owners report driving theirs for over 500,000km! I'm so glad I made the switch from Chrysler to the Astro - it's been a much better purchase for me.

From day one, the van has been giving us a lot of trouble. Unfortunately, we couldn't claim it as a lemon because the problems were all different. We've only driven 54K miles, and we've already had to replace the alternator, wiper motor, A/C compressor, driver's door window motor, transmission, and everything on the motor that has oil in it has a leak. I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy one of these vehicles.

We bought this van because it has 8 seatbelts instead of the 7 in most mini-vans. We have used it a lot. We have 6 children and travel frequently, yet it has been reliable and serviceable for the entire 7 years we've owned it. We made a great purchase buying it used.

This has been our family car since 2001 and we've been very pleased. It has over 160k miles and shows no sign of quitting.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your story about your trusty van. It's amazing to hear that it has served you so well over the years. Despite initial doubts, it sounds like it has been a reliable and spacious vehicle for your family and your wife's Samoyed dogs. You have clearly taken great care of it, using synthetic oil and maintaining it regularly. It's understandable that now, as retirees, you are looking for a new car to last you for the next few years. I hope your van finds a new home where it will continue to be loved and appreciated!

Fifteen years ago, I came across this 1995 Astro Van, CL, which was originally set up for 8 or 9 people, with 2 large bench seats behind the driver's seat. It even had a factory-installed rear heater for the passengers' comfort. Despite some initial issues with the engine due to the previous owner's neglect, our mechanic installed a long block and it has been a reliable vehicle ever since. The catalytic converter was replaced 9 years ago and we haven't had any smog problems yet! It's great for off-road adventures!

We've had a great experience with our Astro, despite some negative reviews in Consumer Reports. Since we needed a minivan that could tow our boat, our options were limited, but the Astro (and the GMC Safari) fit the bill. Although we've had to make a few repairs, including a couple of pricey ones, we were fortunate to have purchased an extended warranty from Carmax that covered everything. With plenty of room for our family of four and their friends, the Astro has been a fantastic choice for us. In fact, the low CR rating has made it an affordable option for anyone in the market for a used minivan.
