1998 Chevrolet Astro problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

The removable seats made the van especially popular with families. Sports gear, camping equipment, and so much more could fit into the cargo area with no problem. The back doors of the Astrovan were also something new and different.

What engine did the Chevy Astro have?

Many of the same components. Directly from the Caprice station wagon while the rear had composite leaf springs like the s10. Engine.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-02-10
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1998 CHEVY ASTRO VAN THAT QUALIFIES FOR A EXPIRED WARRANTY FOR GM THAT IS RELATED TO A DEFECT IN THEIR FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM THAT CAUSES THEM TO STICK OPEN OR CLOSED. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED BY CHEVY ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND WAS NOT PROPERLY DIAGNOSED BY A MECHANIC UNTIL THIS YEAR. THE BULLETIN/WARRANTY NUMBER IS: 99066E AND IT STATES THAT ALL REPAIRS RELATING TO THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE COVERED NO CHARGE TO THE VEHICLE OWNER AS LONG AS IT'S WITHIN 10 YEARS OR 200,000 MILES. SO, I'M 3 YEARS OUT OF WARRANTY AND I HAVE 217,000 MILES. IT DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT THAT CHEVY NEVER CONTACTED ME ABOUT THIS AND I'VE HAD TO PAY FOR NUMEROUS REPAIRS RELATED TO THE FUEL SYSTEM IN THIS VEHICLE OVER THE YEARS WITHOUT THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF I HAD MY FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM FIXED. THESE VANS ARE KNOWN TO RUN UP TO 450,000 MILES. THE OPERATION OF MY VEHICLE IS VITAL IN THIS ECONOMY. I REALLY WOULD APPRECIATE THIS WARRANTY EXTENDED TO ME. I HAVE CONTACTED CHEVY/GM AND THEY JUST READ THE WARRANTY BACK AND DENY ME REPAIR OR TELL ME TO GET IT FIXED AT THE DEALERSHIP. WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY FOR A REPAIR THAT THERE IS A WARRANTY THAT STATES THAT THEY ARE AT FAULT AND IT'S RELATED TO FUEL DEPOSITS IN CALIFORNIA FUEL? *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-07-01
  • VIN: 1GBDM19W2WB
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1998 CHEVY ASTRO 2WD WE BOUGHT WITH 23K MI. IN 2000. ROUGHLY 2 YEARS AGO WE HAD ALL NEW BRAKES (HEAD TO TOE, FRONT & BACK) INSTALLED AGAIN. WE HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT ISSUES WITH OUR ABS MAINLY WHEN TRAVELING UNDER 15 MPH, WHEN YOU TRY AND STOP IT GRABS HEAVILY OR SOMETIMES ALMOST NOT AT ALL. JUST LAST YEAR WE HAD THE FRONT BRAKES RE-DONE AGAIN AND STILL THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. I HAVE SEEN MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THE WEB FOR THIS TYPE OF ISSUE. WE ONLY TRAVEL 12-14K MILES A YEAR WITH THE VEHICLE AND MOST OF THE DRIVING IS ON COUNTRY ROADS. WE NOTICE IT THE MOST WHEN WE ARE DROPPING THE KIDS OFF AT SCHOOL OR PICKING THEM UP OR PULLING INTO OR OUT OF THE GARAGE. THE JERKING ACTION HAS CAUSED MAJOR FRONT END ASSEMBLY DAMAGE TO THE VAN WHERE WE HAD TO REPLACE MOST OF THOSE PIECES AS WELL. AFTER DUMPING ALMOST $2200 INTO THE VAN AND STILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE, THIS IS WHY I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE, CAUSE IT IS DANGERING THE LIVES OF MY FAMILY AND OTHER AROUND US. I BELIEVE IT IS A BAD SENSOR. WE WILL ALSO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF ILLINOIS LISA MADIGAN AS THIS IS MORE THAN JUST ONE INCIDENT ACROSS THE U.S. FEEL FREE TO CALL OR EMAIL ME ASAP AS WE DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO FROM HERE. IF THE ECONOMY WAS BETTER WE MIGHT OF JUST WENT TO BUY ANOTHER VAN BUT WE ARE LIKE THE REST OF AMERICA AT THIS POINT AND SEE NO POINT IN TRYING TO GET RID OF A VEHICLE THAT PERFORMS WELL EXCEPT FOR THE ABS. WE HAVE RECORDS OF ALL WORK DONE TO THE VAN AND WILL SHARE IF NEED BE. DISSATIFIED VEHICLE OWNER TOM K. *TR

TO STOP THE VEHICLE, I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION IN REVERSE AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. AFTER ANOTHER BRAKE ATTEMPT THE BRAKES RESPONDED. I WENT TO AN ISOLATED STREET WITH SOME ICE AND DRY PAVEMENT, AND THIS ANTI-LOCK BRAKING FAILURE OCCURRED IN 1 OUT OF 5 BRAKING ATTEMPTS. I NEVER RECEIVED AN ANTI-LOCK WARNING LIGHT AND THE SYSTEM COMPLETED ITS SELF TESTS PROPERLY ON EACH ENGINE START UP. I REMOVED THE 60 AMP FUSE TO DISABLE THE SYSTEM AND I AM NOT SURE I CAN EVER TRUST THIS SYSTEM AGAIN. *JB

THIS HAS HAPPENED IN TWO ASTROS THAT THE CONSUMER HAS OWNED. THE FIRST ONE WAS A 1995 CHEVY ASTRO VAN AND THE SECOND ONE IS A 1998 ASTRO VAN. THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND MOTOR TO THE WIPERS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE OWNER WAS TOLD BY A SERVICE TECHNICIAN THAT GM REPLACED THE MOTOR ON THE WIPERS ON THE MODELS BEFORE THE OWNERS VAN. THERE IS NO RECALL ON THE 1998 VANS. THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE 2003. THE OWNER HAS NOT HAD THIS LOOKED AT BY A TECHNICIAN. THE OWNER STATED THAT SHE USUALLY SHE PULLS OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, POPS THE HOOD AND TAPS ON THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR TO GET THE WIPER TO WORK, AND MOST TIMES THIS WORKS. THE CONSUMER HAS NOT TALKED TO THE DEALER BUT HAS TALKED WITH GM. THE PERSON AT GM SAID THAT SINCE THERE WAS NO RECALL THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY CAN DO. THE OWNER JUST KEEPS TAPPING ON THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THE OWNER IS TAKING HER VAN IN FOR RECALL WORK ON THE SIDE MIRROR TOMORROW. SHE IS GOING TO ASK ABOUT THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND SHOW THEM THE COMPLAINTS THAT HAVE BEEN FILED ON THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS FROM THE NHTSA. *NM

Negative 1998 Chevrolet Astro car reviews

This van has been nothing but trouble since day one, with multiple tire replacements and alignments needed at under 10,000 miles. Despite our diligent preventive maintenance, we have also experienced air conditioning problems. It is worth noting that the safety reviews of this van are listed as 'poor'. Based on our experience, I would recommend considering other options if you are in the market for a reliable minivan.

This is a very reliable people/thing hauler with great power from the 4.3 engine. Although the old solid rear leaf spring made the older van a better ride than the current set-up, this van still has a lot to offer. It may have more rattles than my previous astro, but it is still a great choice. While the value loss may be high, you can buy one cheap and plan to keep it for a long time.

I've owned this same vehicle for the past 6.5 years and have taken it on many long distance trips. I've found it to be quite exceptional - it's very comfortable and roomy, making it perfect for kids moving about and for extra storage.

    I love these vans.

Hi there! It's great to hear that you've owned your car for 9 years and put 102k miles on it. While it may not have been perfect, it sounds like it has been very reliable for you. It's impressive that you were able to get it for $18,400 out the door when it was originally stickered for $24,800! It's good to know that the repairs you've had to make over the years have been affordable, and it's great that you've only needed to replace the water pump, battery, and serpentine belt. It's also good to hear that the brake pads and tires are reasonably priced. Thanks for sharing your experience with us, and we hope you continue to enjoy your car! Oh, and it's interesting to know that the roof rack only adds interior noise.

45000 miles only problem has been battery and wiper blades replaced once, steering alignment once. Still with original Uniroyal tires. 20 mpg highway, good, but would like it better. Two factory recalls for very minor problems. I have not had typical Chevy things breaking, e.g. window cranks, doorknobs, etc, that I have had with Chevies in past years. Everything works like it is supposed to.

Replacing tie rod ends every 40K or less and going through many sets of tires is common for these vans. Unfortunately, the 50K tires I purchased failed about 50% of the expected life and prorating them resulted in no compensation. Ball joints typically need replacement around 100K. Additionally, it's important to replace the cap and rotor every 12-15K miles to ensure the vehicle starts properly. While the doghouse can be difficult to remove to work on the engine, it's not too challenging. Changing plugs can be a chore, especially the driver's side one which is very difficult to access. I purchased my 1991 van with 100K miles and it still runs fine with no issues at 270K miles. I replaced the alternator twice as a preventative measure due to some noise, as well as the fuel pump, water pump, and brakes (typical wear items). The heater core started leaking and I replaced it myself many years ago. There is a very small amount of oil consumption and leakage under the vehicle between oil changes, which is less than many new vehicles. The rims are rusting out and developing slow leaks, as is the underbody. I have already replaced one rim. The original exhaust is still intact! It's not a great turning (handling) vehicle when compared to a full-sized Avalanche or equivalent, and there's not a lot of legroom, but it's good enough for me (I am 6' 2”). Recently, the check engine light came on because the anti-lock brakes are not working, but I don't need this fancy anti-lock system and find simplicity is best. The A.C died many years ago and there is minimal heat due to gunk in the radiator (which has been flushed many times), but now there is a leak in the radiator and it cannot be flushed or pressurized. It must be near the top of the water line because I only add about one cup of water per year, and it does not leak. This is more of a truck than a minivan for the wife, but it does great in winter and is super handy for homeowners who need to haul replacement water heaters or washer/dryers. Overall, this is a great, reliable vehicle that I love and will miss dearly if and when I decide to part with it.I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned you're thinking of a Chevy Avalanche to replace your current vehicle someday. That's a great choice! Let me know if you need any help with your search.

I have been the proud owner of this vehicle for 9.9 years. Although I have had to spend a few hundred dollars to fix the rear a/c and transmission, I have found that it is easy on tires and brakes, and the replacement battery has been working well so far. Recently, I took it on a 900 mile trip and was pleased to find that it got over 21 mpg and had plenty of room for all my belongings without feeling cluttered. The interior has held up excellently, with the exception of the recliner levers. Overall, it is a solid, quiet, roomy, and economical vehicle. I would caution against expecting a high resale value, unless you are in the market for a used one.
