1990 Chevrolet Astro problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common 1990 Chevrolet Astro problems

The 1990 Chevrolet Astro is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. This section will discuss these issues in detail, focusing on the 1990 model year.

  • Engine Problems: Engine issues are prevalent in the 1990 Chevrolet Astro, with many complaints about rough running and misfires.
  • Fuel System Recalls: The 1990 Chevrolet Astro has had several recalls related to the fuel system, with 27 recalls in total. These recalls address issues such as fuel leaks, which can lead to fire hazards, and faulty fuel pumps, which can cause performance issues and decreased fuel efficiency.
  • Seat Issues: Seat problems are also common in the 1990 Chevrolet Astro, with 27 recalls related to seat issues. These recalls address concerns such as seatbacks not locking into place, which can increase the risk of injury during a collision, and seatbelt malfunctions, which can also compromise passenger safety.
  • Lighting Problems: The 1990 Chevrolet Astro has had 38 recalls related to lighting issues. These recalls address problems such as headlights not working properly, which can decrease visibility and increase the risk of accidents, and taillights malfunctioning, which can make it difficult for other drivers to see the vehicle at night or during inclement weather.
  • Battery Drainage: Some 1990 Chevrolet Astro owners have reported issues with battery drainage, where the battery becomes completely drained within a short period after being charged. This problem can be caused by a faulty charging system, a dead battery cell, or a motor running when it shouldn't, such as the fuel pump.
  • Thick White Smoke: Thick white smoke coming from the muffler is another common issue in the 1990 Chevrolet Astro, which is usually a sign of burning coolant due to a blown gasket or other engine problems.
  • Torque Converter Lockup Clutch: A worn torque converter lockup clutch can cause a "thump" under the floor, either catching or releasing when it shouldn't. This problem can lead to discomfort for the driver and passengers and may indicate a need for clutch replacement.

In conclusion, the 1990 Chevrolet Astro has several common problems, including issues with door handles, engine performance, recalls related to fuel systems, seats, lighting, battery drainage, thick white smoke, and torque converter lockup clutch. These issues can lead to decreased performance, increased repair costs, and safety concerns. Owners of the 1990 Chevrolet Astro should be aware of these problems and consider regular maintenance and inspections to address them promptly.

1990 Chevrolet Astro engine

How long does a Chevy Astro engine last?

These engines are extremely reliable and long lasting as long as they receive basic maintenance. I have seen many 4.3 L V6 is with well over 300,000 miles on them. Ultimately a Chevy Astro can make it that far and although still running it will start falling apart around the engine.

How reliable is the Chevy Astro?

Are Chevy Astro vans reliable? Chevy Astro vans tend to be very reliable. These vans were built primarily for commercial use and they have the same reliability and longevity that you would expect from other commercial trucks and vans. If you take care of them they should have no problem lasting over 200,000 miles.

Why did Chevy discontinue the Astro?

The Astro was assembled at the Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland. The Astro was discontinued in 2005 because General Motors thought that they were not selling as well as they used to. The Astro was replaced by the Chevrolet Uplander, Chevrolet Traverse and the Chevrolet City Express.

How many miles per gallon does a Chevy Astro?

Based on data from 25 vehicles, 1,640 fuel-ups and 464,788 miles of driving, the 2000 Chevrolet Astro gets a combined Avg MPG of 15.10 with a 0.18 MPG margin of error. Below you can see a distribution of the fuel-ups with 120 outliers (6.82%) removed.

At 98000 miles the hydraulic control system for the ABS malfunctioned with an estimated repairs of $2500. At 120000 miles the automatic transmission is slipping from 2nd to 3rd gear and the recommended replacement of a rebuilt transmission would cost $3500. Exterior paint has been gradually peeling off at less than 8 years old.

Positive 1990 Chevrolet Astro car reviews

  1. Dallas Orn 2025-01-09

You have a 1990 Astro van with 127,000 miles on it and it's great to hear that you haven't had any major issues with it, except for a few door locks going bad. It's wonderful to hear that it's very reliable and handles well in the winter time, making it easy for you to drive on snowy roads in NW Pa. It's also impressive to hear that your in-laws have driven theirs cross country with 300 thousand miles on it and still trust it. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  2. Nasir Dickinson 2024-11-11

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I absolutely adore my van that I purchased from Bayou Chevrolet back in 1988. It's a 1989 model, and it's been such a reliable vehicle for me. I'm so grateful for it!

  3. Cullen Hermann 2024-11-01

Hi there! I just wanted to share with you how much I love my Astro van. I've been driving it since I bought it brand new in 1990 and it's been my trusty companion ever since. I remember taking it on a 1500-mile trip the day after I bought it and it performed like a champ! With 193,000 miles on it, I've only needed to do routine maintenance and it still runs like a dream. Plus, the AWD has saved me a few times. It's now getting about 22 to 24 miles per gallon on the highway, so I just can't bear to part with it.

  4. Presley Greenholt 2024-10-19

The Astro has been very good to us. We live in Canada and our winters can be harsh, but it still works great. It's on its 2nd motor, but what can you expect with over 450,000 kms on it? It feels solid when you drive it, not like the other mini vans, and the rear wheel drive uses time-proven technology. We love it and would buy another.

  5. Nat Little 2024-10-08

I've had my Astro for 8 years now and it's been a really great car! Even though it was reconditioned after a wreck, it's still been reliable. Unfortunately, this year it burned a valve in the head of the engine and is running rougher. However, my father likes it so much he said he'll keep it and put in a newer engine.
