2002 Chevrolet Astro problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-08-14
- VIN: 1GNDM19X52B
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: VEHICLE LOST ALL ELECTRICAL POWER TO EVERY SYSTEM THAT IS CONTROLLED BY THE IGNITION BEING TURNED ON. DRIVER WAS IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING A U-TURN AROUND A CURBING ISLAND IN THE DIVIDED TRAFFIC ROAD WHEN ALL ELECTRICAL WAS INTERRUPTED WHILE THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT. CONDITION CAUSED STEERING TO BECOME DIFFICULT, BRAKE PEDAL WENT CLEAR TO THE FLOOR, AIR CONDITIONING AND RADIO AND HEADLIGHTS ALL WENT OFF. CONDITION WAS REPEATABLE WITH EXCEPTION OF BRAKE PEDAL, EACH TIME STEERING WAS TURNED TO THE LEFT. INSPECTION UNDER VEHICLE FOUND THAT MAIN POWER CABLE IS ROUTED ACROSS FRONT SIDE OF MAIN FRAME MOTOR MOUNT MEMBER. THERE WAS A SLIGHT CURVE IN THE WAY THE WIRE WAS ROUTED AND EACH TIME THE STEERING WAS TURNED TO THE LEFT, THE INNER TIE ROD END FOR THE RIGHT WHEEL CAME IN CONTACT WITH THE WIRE HARNESS. AFTER MANY MILES, THE PROTECTIVE COVER AND THEN THE ACTUAL WIRE INSULATION WAS RUBBED THROUGH. THIS CAUSED A DIRECT SHORT TO GROUND THROUGH THE STEERING PARTS OF ALL (SWITCHED WHILE RUNNING) ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS OF THE VEHICLE. PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED BY TAPING THE WIRE INSULATION, THEN TAPING THE PROTECTIVE COVERING. I THEN HAD TO FABRICATE A BRACKET TO SCREW TO THE STEEL CRUMPLE MEMBER TO HOLD THE HARNESS BACK FROM THE STEERING LINKAGE. *TR

WHEN THEY PUT IT ON THE LIFT THEY SAID THE WHOLE BRAKING SYSTEM WAS MELTED UNTIL THE POINT OF THE HOSE BURSTING. HE SAID HE NEVER SAW ANYTHING LIKE THIS IN HIS 20 YEARS OF SERVICE. THEY DID NOT WANT TO TOUCH IT STATING IT WAS NOW A LIABILITY TO THEM AND DIRECTED ME TO CHEVY. CHEVY CONCURRED, FOUR DIFFERENT PEOPLE SAID THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN OR HAVE A CLUE AT WHAT CAUSED THIS. THEY CALLED IN GM, WHO ALSO NEVER HAD SEEN THIS, BUT BOUNCED THE BLAME ON A QUESTIONABLY INSTALLED MASTER CYLINDER. CHEVY SAID THEY CAN REPLACE THE WHOLE BRAKING SYSTEM BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS WRONG, BUT SINCE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THIS OR WHY FUSES DIDN'T BLOW TO PREVENT IT, IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. WE HIRED OUR OWN CAR CONSULTANT TO LOOK AT THE VAN, HE TOO HAS NEVER SEEN OR HEARD OF ANYTHING LIKE THIS. THE HEAT AND MELTED BRAKE LINES RAN CLOSER THAN 1/4 INCH AWAY FROM THE GAS TANK. I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THE RISK OF DRIVING AGAIN WITH MY CHILDREN AND LOOSING BRAKES OR POSSIBLY IGNITING THE GAS TANK. *TR

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my van. I bought it used back in January 2003 with 38,000 miles on it, and I have to say, it's been a really great vehicle overall! While I have experienced a few minor issues such as a bad window motor, some vibration at idle, and an intermittent squeak from the rear on acceleration, they haven't been too much of a hassle. I use it to drive to work every day and have even taken it on a few 100+ mile trips to visit relatives. It's super comfortable, roomy, and handles really well. Plus, the dash controls are very user-friendly, which is always a plus. Even with 6 adults aboard in the July heat, the front/rear AC does a great job of keeping us cool. Thanks for listening!
-
I really like this van, but there are a couple of things that could be improved. The turning radius isn't as tight as our old Voyager, and it can be difficult to back up at night due to the dark tinted windows and high seats. However, it's a fantastic traveling van with a fold-down back seat that turns into a bed and nice window blinds. Plus, it gets better mileage than we expected, averaging 20 mpg and even up to 24 mpg on the interstate. Overall, we're very happy with it and plan to keep it until it falls apart!
-
I'm currently on my third Astro Van and I have to say, I was devastated when I had to give up my first one at 100,000 miles and then my second one at 107,000 miles. In today's throw-away world, it's refreshing to know that there are still some things that are dependable. As someone who frequently transports children, I can attest to the incredible ruggedness of this vehicle. If I could make one suggestion to Chevy, it would be to consult with mothers for ideas on how to improve the model. For example, having rear windows that open would be a great addition. Overall, I really hope they continue to produce this model.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with Astro. I've been using it for almost 2 years now and I absolutely love it. It's perfect for families with more than 2 children, as it's incredibly comfortable and reliable. I highly recommend it!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the '90 Plymouth Grand Voyager and the Astro. While the Plymouth had a lot of space, it unfortunately wasn't very reliable. However, the Astro has been a game changer for me! It has just as much room, but has been perfectly reliable so far and has a lot more power. I love going camping, and with the Astro, I feel confident taking my pop-up wherever I want to go - even into the mountains! Plus, it handles snow like a champ - I've never had any issues with slipping. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Astro to anyone with an active family. Thanks for listening!

This van was perfect for my needs at the time. It can tow medium-sized loads and is comfortable enough. If you remove the third-row seat, which can be a bit of a chore for one person, the cargo space is great. However, I do think that the engine box could be pushed forward a bit.

This is actually the second Astro we've owned, the first being a 1993 model that we sold at 170,000 miles with very few problems - just some issues with the motor mounts and electric windows. We've taken great care of this van, but I do occasionally tow a small trailer with heavy loads. Unfortunately, the transmission never seemed to shift quite right, but the Chevy dealer always said it was okay. Recently, I noticed the rear starting to make a strange noise, especially at 40 mph when I take my foot off the gas. I also noticed some oil leakage around the pinion seal and found that it was about a pint low. I took it to Aamco and they're currently repairing the bad rear and transmission.

The 1st gear can be a bit too torquey and the computer sometimes seems to second guess your moves. Personally, I tend to drive conservatively most of the time, so when I really have to get on it and pass someone, it can hesitate a bit like it has to figure out what I'm about to do. Additionally, the plastic trim is not very well fitted and can be easily popped up with your fingers. The ventilation system could be improved as well, as it can be difficult to get the right amount of A/C or fresh air through the settings. However, there is still plenty of air coming out even with the front vents closed. Lastly, the wipers on high speed can push water from the passenger side into the driver's vision, which can be a bit of a nuisance.

This is the second Astro we have owned. Despite experiencing two serious accidents with our first one, the van held up great. Unfortunately, we have had some issues with our new one, such as the A/C, window switches, and belt breaking, as well as the fuel pump and emergency brake going out. Additionally, the wiper control broke and the interior does not seem to hold up very well. Although the van sounds horrible and has been in the shop, I still feel safe driving it and enjoy doing so. However, I do worry about it leaving me stranded one day. It can also be difficult to see out of the back windows with the doors and the sliding door is hard to close. Overall, I appreciate the safety and driving experience of the Astro, but hope to resolve these issues soon.
