2000 Chevrolet Astro problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

IT NEVER DID SHOW UP A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR SHOWED A CODE THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG. I DROVE IT TWO DAYS LATER AND IT DID THE SAME THING. THEY CHECKED IT OUT AND DROVE IT AGAIN FOR A WEEK AND IT HAPPEN AGAIN. I SPENT $1200 TRYING TO GET THIS SAFE TO DRIVE. IT IS AS IF THE KEY WAS SHUT OFF. FINALLY WITH SOME OF MY KNOWLEDGE ABOUT WHAT CAN CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN I CHECKED THE BATTERY. IT WAS ONLY ONE YEAR OLD. IT SHOWED UP AS BAD UNDER A LOAD. WHEN I TOOK THE VAN BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP THEY SAID BATTERY SHOWED GOOD. FINALLY I TOOK THE BATTERY BACK TO AUTO ZONE THEY SHOWED IT AS BAD ALSO AND REPLACED IT. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM AFTER THAT. SO THE PROBLEM YOU ARE HAVING WITH THE KEY SWITCH IN ALL THOSE CARS YOU MAY HAVE TO DOUBLE CHECK THE BATTERY'S. VOLTAGE TO THE MICROPROCESSOR SHOULD STAY WITHIN LIMITS OF APX 8 VOLTS. THIS MIGHT BE MORE OF A PROBLEM THAN THE KEY SWITCH. THANKS FOR READING THIS LETTER. *TR

  • Summary: MY AC FAILED TO BLOW COLD AFTER I NOTED SOME OIL (NOT MOTOR OIL) UNDER THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP RECHARGED THE SYSTEM WHICH WAS APPARENTLY EMPTY INCLUDING DYE FOR WHICH I BORE THE COST ($200+). LESS THAN 12 HRS LATER THE SYSTEM NO LONGER BLEW COLD AND NO FLUID WAS NOTED UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION OF THE DYE. THE MECHANIC REMOVED THEN INTERIOR ENGINE HOOD AND FOUND THAT THE AC LINE HAD RUBBED AGAINST THE TRANSMISSION FILLER TUBE (NOW METAL ON METAL). A HOLE THE SIZE OF A DIME TO NICKEL WAS IN THE FILLER TUBE AND THE AC LINE ALSO HAD A HOLE IN IT. I ALSO HAVE ANOTHER 2K CHEVY ASTRO THAT WAS DIAG'D SEVERAL YEARS AGO FOR THE SAME HOLE IN THE AC LINE BUT IT HAD NOT WORN A HOLE IN THE TRANSMISSION FILLER TUBE. THE MECHANIC HAD INDICATED THAT THE AC LINE WAS "RUN THAT WAY FROM THE FACTORY". AT THIS POINT FOREIGN MATTER HAS FALLEN INTO THE TRANSMISSION INCLUDING THE METAL FROM THE FILLER TUBE, THE BLACK FOAM COVER ON THE AC LINE AND APPARENTLY THE FREON FROM THE DYE RECHARGE. I HAVE TO PRESUME OTHER FOREIGN MATTER HAS MADE ITS WAY IN TO FILLER TUBE AS WELL. I AM NOW ATTEMPTING THE HAVE GM COVER THE $1K REPAIR TO THE AC LINE AND TRANSMISSION FILLER TUBE. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-09-20
  • VIN: 1G1ND52JXY6
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2000 MALIBU AND IT HAS 129K MILES ON IT. THE ANTI-THEFT LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR MONTHS AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE REASON FOR THIS WAS, BUT IT NEVER SEEMED TO AFFECT MY CAR IN ANY WAY. TODAY THE CAR TURNED ON FINE TWICE, ONCE COMING OUT OF THE HOUSE AND THE SECOND TIME COMING OUT OF THE GAS STATION. WHEN I TRY TO TURN IT ON AFTER LEAVING FROM A JOB INTERVIEW, IT CRANKS AS IF IT WANTS TO TURN ON BUT DOESN'T. IT SOUNDS LIKE IF THE GAS TANK IS ON EMPTY BUT IT'S ALMOST FULL. I CHECKED ALL CONNECTIONS AND EVEN TRIED A JUMP START AND IT DIDN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE. FINALLY I GOT IT TOWED HOME AND FIND OUT ON THE INTERNET THAT CHEVY MALIBUS ARE FULL OF DEFECTS.(HTTP://WWW.AUTOSITE.COM/CONTENT/RESEARCH/FORUMS/INDEX.CFM/ACTION/POSTS/FID/1601) (INCLUDING MY AC THAT ONLY WORKS ON 3, 4, AND 5). MY ANTI THEFT DEVICE WON'T LET ME DRIVE MY OWN CAR, AND I ALREADY MISSED AN IMPORTANT CLASS. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO LEAVE THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE ON POSITION FOR A WHILE UNTIL THE ANTI THEFT LIGHT TURNS OFF, BUT IT NEVER TURNS OFF. IT HAS BARELY STARTED WITH THIS PROBLEM TODAY, BUT AFTER READING ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS, MORE LIKE HORROR STORIES, I'M SCARED OF MY MALIBU AND I DON'T TRUST IT ANYMORE BECAUSE I KNOW IT WILL GET WORSE. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY THE DEALER TO FIX AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM THAT THEY KNOW EXISTS BUT WON'T ADMIT TO; THERE NEEDS TO BE A SERIOUS RECALL. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-09-18
  • VIN: 1GNEL19W6YB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: MY 2000 CHEVROLET ASTRO VAN WITH ALL WHEEL DRIVE INTERMITTENTLY FAILS TO STOP AT LOW SPEEDS DUE TO INAPPROPRIATE ACTIVATION OF THE ANTI LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. THIS CONDITION HAS NEARLY RESULTED IN SEVERAL ACCIDENTS THAT JEOPARDIZED THE SAFETY OF PEOPLE AND PROPERTY, SUCH AS WHEN TRAVELING IN PARKING LOTS AND CROWDED CITY STREETS. THE ABS SYSTEM FAILURE DOES NOT REGISTER A SERVICE CODE, AND THE PROBLEM WAS NOT RECOGNIZED BY SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE LOCAL GM DEALERSHIP, WHO REPLACED TRANSFER CASE FLUID IN THE ABSENCE OF HAVING A CLUE. THROUGH SELF DIAGNOSIS, THE PROBLEM WAS CONFIRMED TO BE THE ABS SYTEM BECAUSE THE BRAKES OPERATE NORMALLY WHEN THE FUSE IS REMOVED FROM THE WIRING BLOCK SLOT LABELED ABS. DUE TO THE ABSENCE OF ANY PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, AND THE FAILURE OF THE VEHICLES DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM TO DETECT THIS PROBLE, IT IS CLEARLY A DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE OR COMPONENTS DESIGN OR CONSTRUCTION. OWNERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PULL FUSES ON SAFETY SYSTEM IN ORDER FOR THE BRAKES TO WORK WHEN NECESSARY. NHTSA SHOULD EVALUATE THE AGGREGATE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ALREADY ISSUED WITH THIS PROBLEM, AND UNDERSTAND THAT THE GM TRAINED SERVICE TECHNICIANS ARE NOT HELPING OWNERS REMEDY OR UNDERSTAND THIS DEFECT EXISTS. A RECALL NOTICE SHOULD BE ISSUED. *TR

Negative 2000 Chevrolet Astro car reviews

Although the initial quality was acceptable, this vehicle did not hold its miles well. Despite all maintenance being done on schedule, after 60,000 miles, the vehicle seemed to be in self-destruct mode. The starter, battery, water pump, AC compressor, blower motor, rear wheel bearing, and transmission all needed repairs. Unfortunately, this vehicle was the last straw for me with the big three (GM, Ford, Chrysler). On the other hand, I never had any issues with my Hyundai, and I love my Honda even more. I hate to say it, but I believe our Union workers are overrated. However, I think we can start building decent vehicles here in the USA if we abolish the Unions. Until then, Honda has my business. After all, they are over 75% USA or Canadian anyway.

Wow, you've put 40000 miles on your car in just 3 years! It sounds like your car is a good runner with the 4.3 6cyl engine. However, it seems like some simple things are going wrong, which can be frustrating. For example, the drivers power window motor may need to be replaced, but don't worry, you're not alone - many people have had this issue. Additionally, the front and rear air may have a major leak from front to back. Unfortunately, the fuel gauge may not work properly and the lights behind the radio may not be very bright. On the bright side, the dutch doors are a nice feature, although it's important to keep an eye out for rust under the lift window. By the way, I'm also retired UAW. Take care!

This is a great all-purpose vehicle when it runs right. Although it has remained unchanged for 20 years, it has a classic charm like the old VW Beetle. Unfortunately, mine has been experiencing some issues such as burning more coolant than oil and a leaking head gasket, which has resulted in the need for a new engine after just 74K miles. The engine is also hard to service, with spark plugs that are not easily accessible. It can be challenging to find mechanics who know and understand this vehicle. On the bright side, the front end was rebuilt for $1800, and I added 5-leaf rear springs for heavy-duty use, which I highly recommend. Recently, I was thrilled to achieve 18.6 MPG on the highway. However, I have decided to trade it in for a used 2005 model. Despite its flaws, I have enjoyed my time with this cargo van, which was converted to a passenger vehicle with large clear glass windows cut into the sides.

I am confident in stating that the car is not built to the highest standards, as evidenced by the internal mechanisms breaking down despite your love for driving it.

  5. Pablo Boehm 2024-03-05

Although there have been some issues with my car, I have taken care of them promptly and efficiently. The following repairs have been made with 50K miles on the car: - Three new rotors and pads on the front for the brakes - Addressed gas gauge issue - Resolved vacuum problems causing the A/C fan to not work - Fixed sliding door issue - Ensured all little pieces are properly secured.

Great family vehicle. Lots of cargo space for kids, dog, and camping gear.

  2. Bradford O'Connell 2024-09-24

I absolutely love this van and I wouldn't consider buying any other vehicle. It's reliable, sturdy, and incredibly comfortable. I highly recommend this van/truck to anyone without hesitation.

We sold our 1995 Astro only to buy another one for 2000. This van is the most underrated family vehicle on the road. It's incredibly spacious, even more so than the full-sized, expensive SUVs. The 4.3 6-cylinder engine delivers excellent performance, despite what the horsepower rating of 190 suggests. This van is a smart choice for any family.

My 2000 Chevy Astro has been an incredibly reliable vehicle, lasting me for years with minimal expenses. Despite its longevity, GM has unfortunately discontinued production of this model. I purchased my Astro used in 2004 with 85,000 km off a 4 year lease, and it has since accumulated over 270,000 km with no major issues other than normal wear and tear. I believe GM may have stopped producing these vehicles due to their exceptional reliability. Even after all these years, my Astro still has its original muffler and I have only had to replace the brakes once. The tires also seem to last forever. I use AMSOil synthetic and change it every 40,000 km. Although it is sad to see it go, I am confident that my next vehicle will be just as reliable as my trusty Astro.

If you keep your Astro clean, get it serviced on time, and enjoy hauling lots of people and cargo, you'll love this vehicle. It has plenty of power, get-up-and-go, and gets great mileage over long trips. In fact, it gets the best MPG at 70 to 80 Mph. I personally averaged 22 MPG from MPLS to ORLANDO running 80% over 70MPH.
