2001 Chevrolet Astro problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common 2001 Chevrolet Astro problems
The Chevrolet Astro, produced from 1985 to 2005, has a number of common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include:
- Engine Problems: Engine issues are a common complaint among Astro owners, with the 1997 model year being rated as the worst due to higher repair costs and more problems at lower mileage.
- Transmission Problems: While some owners report minimal transmission issues, others have reported that the transmission went out on their Astro. It is recommended to thoroughly inspect the transmission and look for leaks or other signs of wear when purchasing a used Astro.
- Rust Problems: Rust is a common issue with the Astro, particularly around the rocker panels and other areas where the body is prone to corrosion. When buying a used Astro, it is important to inspect the vehicle for signs of rust and fluid leaks.
- Faulty Dashboard Switch Illumination: Some owners have reported issues with the dashboard switch illumination on their Astro, which can make it difficult to see the controls at night.
- Brake Problems: Brake issues are a common complaint among Astro owners, with some reporting problems with the brake master cylinder and other components. It is important to thoroughly inspect the brakes and other components of the vehicle when purchasing a used Astro.
- Leaky Roof: Some owners have reported leaks in the roof of their Astro, which can be a major inconvenience and potentially lead to further damage to the vehicle.
- Faulty Brake Lights: Brake light issues are a common complaint among Astro owners, with some reporting that the lights have failed multiple times and required multiple repairs before a recall was issued.
- Distributor Cap Failure: Distributor cap failure is a common issue with the Astro, particularly in the 1999 model year. This can lead to starting problems and other engine issues.
- Front End Alignment Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the front end alignment on their Astro, which can affect the handling and ride quality of the vehicle.
- Rear View Mirror Falls Off: Some owners have reported that the rear view mirror on their Astro has fallen off, which can be a major inconvenience and potentially lead to safety issues.
It is important to thoroughly inspect any used Astro for these and other common problems before purchasing. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help to prevent or address these issues.
How many miles will a 2001 Chevy Astro van last?
Chevy Astro vans tend to be very reliable. These vans were built primarily for commercial use and they have the same reliability and longevity that you would expect from other commercial trucks and vans. If you take care of them they should have no problem lasting over 200,000 miles.
How long does a Chevy Astro engine last?
These engines are extremely reliable and long lasting as long as they receive basic maintenance. I have seen many 4.3 L V6 is with well over 300,000 miles on them. Ultimately a Chevy Astro can make it that far and although still running it will start falling apart around the engine.
How much horsepower does a 2001 Chevy Astro have?
The 2001 Astro Cargo boasts 190 horsepower.
What kind of engine does a Chevy Astro have?
The Astro uses a 4.3-liter V-6 engine that produces 190 horsepower.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-11-30
- VIN: 1GNDM19W11B
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: VAN WILL NOT PASS SMOG. THE VERY LAST TIME I DROVE IT, I WAS DRIVING IT ON A CITY STREET AND IT JUST DIED OUT. I'VE SPENT HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO HAVE IT FIXED AND ITSTILL ISN'T FIXED TO PASS SMOG. A SHOP SAID MY FUEL INJECTION SPIDER SYSTEM IS BAD.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-09-01
- VIN: 1GNEL19W41B
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I AM A LICENSED CAR DEALER. I AM VERY CONCERNED AT WHAT I AM SEEING WITH MY CUSTOMERS, WITH CARS I SEE AT THE AUCTIONS, AND WITH BLOG SITES ON THE INTERNET CONCERNING CHEVY'S EBCM COMPUTER MODULE. AT THE AUCTIONS I AM SEEING AT LEAST 25% OF CHEVROLETS AND ABOUT 10% OF FORDS COMING THROUGH WITH BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS ON. MY MAIN CONCERN IS WITH THE CHEVY'S EBCM. THESE VERY EXPENSIVE UNITS FAIL AT THE RELAY POINT ON THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS DUE TO BAD SOLDER JOINTS FROM THE FACTORY. WHEN THEY FAIL, THE DRIVER GETS A BRAKE LIGHT AND AN ABS INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE DASH. THE BRAKES STILL WORK ON THE CAR, BUT THEY DON'T WORK AS DESIGNED. IN FACT THE DRIVER GETS A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY BECAUSE HIS CAR IS STOPPING, BUT IN A SLIPPERY SITUATION IT WILL NOT STOP AS DESIGNED. WHEN I WENT TO THE INTERNET FOR IDEAS TO FIX THE PROBLEM, I AM FINDING A LOT OF POSTINGS SAYING JUST TAKE THE BULB OUT OF THE DASH! I AM ALSO SEEING ADS ON E BAY WHERE YOU CAN SEND YOUR EBCM TO A REPAIR STATION, THEY TAKE IT APART, AND RE SOLDER THE JOINTS FOR $49. I CALLED THE CHEVY DEALER AND THEY WANT OVER $1000 TO FIX THE PROBLEM! I HAVE HEARD OF PEOPLE SELLING THEIR VEHICLE AS IS AND TELLING THE BUYER THAT IT'S OK. THE BRAKES WORK. I CAN'T GET THE LIGHT TO SHUT OFF! THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND IT WILL BECOME MORE DANGEROUS AS MORE AND MORE CARS ARE DRIVING WITH INOPERATIVE EBCM COMPUTERS. IT LOOKS LIKE THE DEFECT COMES FROM HAVING THE COMPUTER DIRECTLY ATTACHED TO THE FRAMES NEAR THE TRANSMISSION AND THEY ARE TAKING ALL THE SHOCK AND VIBRATION IN THAT AREA. I AM ASKING THE GOVERNMENT TO LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM AND ISSUE A RECALL NOTICE FOR DEFECTIVE EBCM COMPUTERS. I ALSO FEEL THIS PROBLEM IS FAR WORSE THAN THE DODGE CLOCK SPRING RECALL, AND THAT EFFECTED ALL DODGE VEHICLES. THIS BRAKING PROBLEM WE ARE SEEING IS BAD ENOUGH THAT IT MAY CAUSE A LARGE LOSS OF LIFE. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-05-30
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1GNDM19W41B
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: AFTER APPROX. ONE WEEK OF OPER. OF MY 2001 CHEVY ASTRO A FIRE OCCURRED THAT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A TOTAL LOSS OF THE VEHICLE AND CONTENTS IF I HAD NOT BEEN CLOSE BY. AFTER DRIVING MY VEHICLE FOR APPROX. 20 MILES AND PARKING IT MY VAN CAUGHT FIRE AFTER BEING SHUT OFF FOR 15 MINUTES. THE VEHICLES POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLES WERE RUN FROM THE BATTERY TO THE ENGINE DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO THE STEERING LINKAGE WHERE IT PASSES THE ENGINE SUPPORT STRUCTURE. IF THE VEHICLE IS JACKED UP TO THE POINT WHERE THE TIRE IS STILL TOUCHING THE GROUND AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED HALF WAY TO THE LEFT THE PASSENGER SIDE INNER TIE ROD END IS RUBBING INTO THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLES WHICH ARE IN A COMMON HARNESS.IF THE SUSPENSION IS MOVING UP AND DOWN ON A BUMPY ROAD WHILE THE WHEEL IS TURNED TO THE LEFT DIRECT CONTACT BETWEEN THE STEERING LINKAGE AND THE BATTERY CABLES WILL CAUSE REPEATED DAMAGE OVER TIME RESULTING IN AN EVENTUAL FIRE.IF THIS FIRE OCCURRED WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY PEOPLE COULD HAVE BEEN HURT. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED LAST NIGHT WHILE MY VAN WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE THE 7 PEOPLE INCLUDING TWO SMALL CHILDREN LIVING HERE COULD HAVE DIED FROM FIRE CAUSED BY VERY POOR ENGINEERING. IF YOU CAN JACK UP A VEHICLE AND CAUSE A MOVABLE PART OF THE VEHICLES SUSPENSION OR STEERING TO COME INTO DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE THE VEHICLES ENGINEERS WERE NEGLIGENT. ALSO HAVING BOTH BATTERY CABLES IN THE SAME HARNESS IS NOT A VERY GOOD IDEA EITHER MY VEHICLE TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OR HAD ANY MAJOR REPAIR WORK DONE. THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL. IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD A REPORTED DEATH FROM THIS ISSUE YET IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME. MY FIRST VEHICLE WAS A GM AND I SUSPECT MY LAST WILL BE, BUT GM HAS TO ANSWER FOR THIS ACT OF STUPIDITY. I HAVE PICTURES I CAN EMAIL THAT SHOW JUST HOW OBVIOUS THIS FLAW IS. *TR

- Date Of Incident: 2007-10-05
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1GNEL19W51B
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: 1) NOTICED THAT MY BRAKES WOULD "PRESSURIZE" WHEN COMING TO A STOP AS IF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WERE ACTIVATING. I'VE EXPERIENCED NORMAL ACTIVATION BEFORE ON ICE, SNOW, AND LOOSE GRAVEL SO I KNEW WHAT IT WAS DOING. IT BEGAN HAPPENING A LOT SO I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER (BASIL CHEVROLET, WELLSVILLE, NY) ON 9/24/07. THEY REPLACED THE ROTORS, PADS AND TOLD ME "ROAD TEST OK...ON ROAD TEST DID EXPERIENCE ANTILOCK PROBLEM. ONLY ONCE FELT - UNABLE TO VERIFY". 2) TOOK MY VAN HOME AND WAS SEEING THE PROBLEM AS MUCH IF NOT MORE SO THAN BEFORE. WAS QUITE UPSET THAT AFTER SPENDING OVER $400 DOLLARS ON THE AUTO, I STILL DIDN'T HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED THAT I TOOK THE VAN IN FOR. COMPLAINED ABOUT IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY COULD BRING IT IN TO "CLEAN THE SENSORS" FOR ME BUT COULDN'T GET ME IN UNTIL "NEXT WEEK". THE VERY NEXT DAY THE PROBLEM AROSE WHILE PARKING MY VEHICLE AT WORK. I LOST ALL BRAKING ABILITY AND SMASHED INTO THE REAR END OF A TRUCK. NO DAMAGE TO THE TRUCK AT ALL BUT EXTENSIVE DAMAGE OCCURRED TO THE FRONT OF MY VEHICLE. SMASHED GRILL, BUMPER, HOOD, HEADLIGHT, AND POSSIBLY MORE THAT I HAVEN'T IDENTIFIED YET. GOT STOPPED BY THE LOCAL POLICE FOR THE HEADLIGHT ISSUE. 3) NOTHING DONE YET TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I LEFT THE VAN AT THE AFOREMENTIONED DEALER FOR REPAIR WORK ON THE BRAKES AND THE HEADLIGHT. HOPING TO PICK IT UP TODAY. *TR

- Summary: NUMEROUS THINGS HAVE GONE WRONG WITH MY 2001 MONTE CARLO. 5 OR 6 TIMES THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPAIRED THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG WHERE IT CONTINUALLY POPS OUT. I AM REALLY CONCERNED WHEN IT MIGHT EXPLODE W/O A CRASH OR IF THERE IS A DRIVER SIDE CRASH IF IT WILL COME OUT TO PROTECT ME. STEERING AND FRONT SUSPENSION POPS. AT 55,117 MILES WE HAD THE OIL CHANGED (WHICH HAS BEEN DONE EVERY 3000 MILES) OR LESS AND ON THE MULTI POINT INSPECTION SHEET, IT LISTED SEVERAL THINGS THAT "MIGHT NEED ATTENTION" SOON. THEY ARE STEERING LINKAGE AND STEERING COMPONENTS, CV AXLE BOOTS OR DRIVE SHAFT AND U JOINTS. THESE THINGS SHOULD NOT BE WORN OUT ON A CAR WITH NO MORE MILES THAN THIS. MY REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER DOESN'T WORK. NOTICED THIS AFTER ONE OF THE AIRBAG REPAIRS. THIS CAR HAS BEEN VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF BUT STILL THE NOISES PERSIST AND NOW TO BE TOLD THAT THESE PARTS MIGHT NEED REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT? WE PAID A LOT OF GOOD MONEY FOR THIS VEHICLE (THIS IS A LIMITED EDITION HIGH SPORT VEHICLE) AND FEEL GM SHOULD BUY IT BACK AND REIMBURSE EVERY DIME OF IT DUE TO THE POOR QUALITY OF IT OR PROPERLY REPAIRED OR PARTS REPLACED AT GM EXPENSE WHILE PROVIDING AN EQUAL VALUE VEHICLE WHILE REPAIR WORK IS DONE. *TR

A MAJOR ACCIDENT WAS AVERTED. WHEN I LOOKED AT THE TIRE, LARGE PIECES OF THE TREAD WERE MISSING, THE STEEL BELTS WERE VISIBLE AND BROKEN, AND A HOLE WAS IN THE SIDEWALL. I HAD RUN OVER NOTHING, AND THE TIRES HAD 970 MILES ON THEM. THE DOT NUMBER ON THE TIRE WAS 3DHF C2T 469 F13L. AFTER I GOT HOME, I CHECKED THE WEB, AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS STYLE TIRE. RECALL 147. THE DOT NUMBER DIDN'T MATCH. I DID CALL COOPER TIRE, AND THEY HAVE PUT IT IN AS A INSURANCE CLAIM. THERE WAS SOME DAMAGE TO THE REAR PANEL WHEN THE TIRE SEPARATED. If you keep your Astro clean, get it serviced on time, and enjoy hauling lots of people and cargo, you'll love this vehicle. It has plenty of power, get-up-and-go, and gets great mileage over long trips. In fact, it gets the best MPG at 70 to 80 Mph. I personally averaged 22 MPG from MPLS to ORLANDO running 80% over 70MPH.
-
Great van! I think the GM quality is still top-notch. I'm really pleased with the AWD.
-
This is actually my second one. I find them quite attractive and the kids love them. Unfortunately, my first one was underpowered and required expensive scheduled maintenance, which I had to abandon. Both vehicles ran well until around 70,000 miles, when various issues arose such as the windows not working, slight idle roughness, parts falling off the sliding door causing rattling, front AC vents not working, back door clicking, vacuum problems with locks and AC vents, and issues with the AC fan motor. Trying to fix all of these issues at the dealer can be quite costly.
-
Great family vehicle. Lots of cargo space for kids, dog, and camping gear.
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my van. I bought it used back in January 2003 with 38,000 miles on it, and I have to say, it's been a really great vehicle overall! While I have experienced a few minor issues such as a bad window motor, some vibration at idle, and an intermittent squeak from the rear on acceleration, they haven't been too much of a hassle. I use it to drive to work every day and have even taken it on a few 100+ mile trips to visit relatives. It's super comfortable, roomy, and handles really well. Plus, the dash controls are very user-friendly, which is always a plus. Even with 6 adults aboard in the July heat, the front/rear AC does a great job of keeping us cool. Thanks for listening!

The 1st gear can be a bit too torquey and the computer sometimes seems to second guess your moves. Personally, I tend to drive conservatively most of the time, so when I really have to get on it and pass someone, the car can hesitate a bit while it figures out what I'm about to do. Additionally, the plastic trim is not very well fitted and can be easily popped up with your fingers. The ventilation system could be improved as well, as it can be difficult to get the right amount of A/C or fresh air through the settings. However, there is still plenty of air coming out even with the front vents closed. Lastly, the wipers on high speed can push water from the passenger side into the driver's vision, which can be a bit of a nuisance.

This is a great all-purpose vehicle when it runs right. Although it has remained unchanged for 20 years, it has a classic charm like the old VW Beetle. Unfortunately, mine has been experiencing some issues such as burning more coolant than oil and a leaking head gasket, which has resulted in the need for a new engine after just 74K miles. The engine is also hard to service, with spark plugs that are not easily accessible. It can be challenging to find mechanics who know and understand this vehicle. On the bright side, the front end was rebuilt for $1800, and I added 5-leaf rear springs for heavy-duty use, which I highly recommend. Recently, I was thrilled to achieve 18.6 MPG on the highway. However, I have decided to trade it in for a used 2005 model. Despite its flaws, I have enjoyed my time with this cargo van, which was converted to a passenger vehicle with large clear glass windows cut into the sides.

Wow, you've put 40000 miles on your car in just 3 years! It sounds like your car is a good runner with the 4.3 6cyl engine. However, it seems like some simple things are going wrong, which can be frustrating. For example, the drivers power window motor may need to be replaced, but don't worry, you're not alone - many people have had this issue. Additionally, the front and rear air may have a major leak from front to back. Unfortunately, the fuel gauge may not work properly and the lights behind the radio may not be very bright. On the bright side, the dutch doors are a nice feature, although it's important to keep an eye out for rust under the lift window. By the way, I'm also retired UAW. Take care!

Although there have been some issues with my car, I have taken care of them promptly and efficiently. The following repairs have been made with 50K miles on the car: - Three new rotors and pads on the front for the brakes - Addressed gas gauge issue - Resolved vacuum problems causing the A/C fan to not work - Fixed sliding door issue - Ensured all little pieces are properly secured.

This is a great van! It's tall and has a lot of space, including a great cargo area. While the rear seats don't recline and can be heavy and difficult to remove, overall it's a fantastic option. It would be even better if it had a rear stereo and TV to keep the kids busy.
