2005 Jaguar Xj problems

The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 2005 Jaguar Xj problems

The Jaguar XJ, particularly the 2005 model, is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues range from mechanical faults to electrical problems and corrosion.

  • Smoke from the Back of the Car: If you notice smoke from the back of the car, it could be a sign of a serious issue. A little black smoke under heavy acceleration on diesel versions is normal, but white or blue smoke on any model indicates a problem that needs immediate attention.
  • Electronic Systems: The Jaguar XJ is packed with electronic trickery, from the on-board entertainment system to satellite navigation. It's essential to check that all these systems work correctly before purchasing the car. If satellite navigation is fitted, ensure it still picks up a GPS signal.
  • Recalls: There have been nine recalls on this shape of XJ, including a reprogramming of the gear selector module to fix a fault that caused the car to go into reverse at high speed, and a recalibration of the engine management software to prevent overheating the particulate filter, which could catch fire in diesel models built between April 2005 and March 2007.
  • Air Suspension Issues: The XJ's air suspension has been known to give problems, with compressors having a relatively short service life and shock absorbers also failing, though less regularly. XJs are also prone to corrosion, particularly around the steel rivets that bind the aluminium body together, causing corrosion in the aluminium panel.
  • Ignition Coils: The ignition coils on the XJ may cause problems over time, leading to misfiring and a drop in power. Replacing an ignition coil is a fiddly job, but it can be done at home to save on high garage bills.
  • Coolant Reservoir Wear: The coolant reservoir on the XJ is prone to rapid wear, leading to cracks and coolant leaks around the engine. Check the reservoir for any cracks, and if the wear is minor, you may be able to seal them. Otherwise, a replacement from a parts page may be necessary.
  • Roof Issues (Convertibles): All convertibles may experience problems with the roof, such as it stopping to open or close, or taking a long time to do so. This is often due to sub-par hydraulic fluid, which can be flushed and replaced with a Jaguar-approved version.
  • Leaking Engine Oil Pan Gasket: A burning smell inside and outside the car when the engine is running could indicate a leaking engine oil pan gasket. A new gasket can be found on the parts list and is relatively easy to install.
  • Airbag Fault: There was a recall of XJs built between 2009 and 2019 due to a misprogrammed Restraint Control Module (RCM), which could lead to airbags not deploying in the event of a collision. The RCM will need a software update to resolve the issue.
  • Rear Lights: The latest version of the XJ (2010-onwards) has rear lights that are prone to water getting inside the lens, leading to condensation build-up. New seals will need to be fitted to stop any moisture getting inside the lens.
  • Power Steering Loss: Loss of power steering and difficulty turning the wheel could be due to an electrical short circuit, which Jaguar should repair for free, even if the car isn't covered by a warranty.
  • Brake Pipe Leaks: If your XJ was built between February and July 2014, it may have leaking brake pipes due to union joints not being tightened correctly. These will need to be replaced.

While these issues may seem daunting, it's essential to remember that many can be resolved with relatively simple fixes or repairs. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when purchasing a used Jaguar XJ.

2005 Jaguar Xj engine

Is 2005 Jaguar reliable?

Jaguars are consistently among the best-handling cars of their kind and the Jaguar on this year make a very good car, reliable.

Is Jaguar XJ a reliable car?

Likewise any work on the engines, and always check for a full service history. As far as reliability goes, there's some good news. The XJ finished top in the luxury car class in our most recent reliability survey, with an excellent overall score of 94.3%.

Why did Jaguar stop making XJ?

The XJ was pulled because there's no way that Jaguar could produce enough models to justify the cost. See the discontinuation of the electric XJ as a way of Jaguar ensuring it has the financial health to quickly adapt its lineup to an all-electric future.

How many miles can a Jaguar XJ last?

The estimated lifespan of a Jaguar Xj is 318,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy. Don't just buy it, VehicleScore it.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-04-21
  • VIN: SAJWA51C75W
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: HEADLIGHT ADJUSTERS BROKEN. THIS CAUSES THE HEADLIGHTS TO POINT DOWNWARD AT THE ROAD AND REDUCED VISIBILITY FOR NIGHT DRIVING. IT WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE LINES ON THE ROAD AND OPERATE THE VEHICLE. THE LOCAL JAGUAR DEALERSHIP ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THESE PLASTIC ADJUSTERS ARE PRONE TO BREAKING IF ADJUSTED AND REFUSED TO WORK ON THE LIGHTS OR PROVIDE A VIABLE SOLUTION. THEIR FIRST CLAIM WAS THAT THESE LIGHTS COULD NOT BE ADJUSTED AND SENT ME AWAY TWICE WITHOUT SERVICING THE VEHICLE. THEIR SOLUTION WAS TO TELL ME TO SEARCH THE INTERNET. UPON SEARCHING THE INTERNET IT WAS CLEAR THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH OTHER DRIVERS AS WELL. THE SAFETY CONCERN IS THAT THIS IS EXTREMELY BRITTLE PLASTIC THAT HOLDS/ADJUSTS THE LIGHTS AND IF BROKEN DO NOT ALLOW FOR SAFE DRIVING.

SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE OF THE DRAWBACK IN SPEED, I HAVE BEEN ALMOST REAR-ENDED. THIS PROBLEM IS PUTTING MY LIFE AND OTHERS ON THE HIGHWAY IN DANGER. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH MY CAR FOR OVER 3 YEARS NOW WITH MANY APPOINTMENTS TO JAGUAR SERVICING FOR REPLACEMENTS; TO INCLUDE COOLANT PUMP AND THROTTLE BODY; YET, THE PROBLEM STILL CONTINUES. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM IS A DEFECT OF THE ENGINE. THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AND LISTED AS A RECALL.

I KEEP THE FOG LIGHTS ON TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LIMITED VIEW OF THE LOW BEAMS. I ALSO USE THE HIGH BEAMS AT NIGHT WHENEVER I CAN. THE HEADLIGHTS NOT PROPERLY ILLUMINATING THE ROAD IN FRONT OF ME IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-01-08
  • VIN: SAJWA51A35W
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: DRIVING AT NIGHT I NOTICED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS LOOK OUT OF ALIGNMENT. THE RIGHT LIGHT WAS ABOUT NORMAL, BUT THE LEFT LIGHT WAS AIMED DOWN AND TO THE LEFT OF THE ROAD AHEAD. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO SEE THE HIGHWAY. I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW. IT'S NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OR HIT ON THE FRONT END. IT'S A LONG WAY TO A DEALER, SO I WENT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THAT THERE IS A PLASTIC PART BROKEN ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE LIGHTS. REPLACEMENT COST FOR PARTS (HAVE TO BUY THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY) AND LABOR (BUMPER HAS TO BE REMOVED TO GET TO THE LIGHT ASSEMBLY) WAS ALMOST $1500. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM SINCE I BELIEVE ITS A DEFECT. IT'S ALSO STRANGE THAT THE NC INSPECTION DOES NOT INCLUDE HEADLIGHT ALIGNMENT. IF IT LIGHTS, IT PASSES. DID NOT GET IT FIXED, WE JUST DON'T DRIVE IT AT NIGHT.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-05-21
  • VIN: SAJWA51C35W
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I WILL START BY SAYING THAT I LOVE MY JAGUAR. IT IS THE BEST CAR I HAVE EVER HAD, WITH ONE EXCEPTION. THIS IS NOW THE FIFTH INCIDENT OF CRACKING RIMS (SIZE 7.5X180 ET52.5) ON MY 2005 JAGUAR X-TYPE (EQUIPPED WITH THE SPORT PREMIUM PACKAGE). I WENT OUT TO PUT THE GARBAGE OUT ON SUNDAY, 20MAY12, WHEN I NOTICED THE FRONT DRIVER'S TIRE WAS LOW. I CHECKED THE PRESSURE, AND THE GUAGE SHOWED 0. THAT NIGHT I PUT IN 40 PSI OF AIR. THE FOLLOWING DAY I CHECKED IT AGAIN, AND THE GUAGE SHOWED 20 PSI. IT IS IMPORTANT TO STATE THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN USED SINCE 19MAY12 TO THAT POINT. I JACKED UP THE CAR, AND PULLED THE WHEEL OFF THE CAR. AFTER SPRAYING WITH SOAPY WATER ON THE INSIDE RIM BY THE SIDEWALL, I FOUND IT WAS BUBBLING. I PUT THE SPARE ON THE CAR. LATER I SWITCHED THE SPARE SO IT COULD BE ON THE DRIVER'S REAR (SO IT WOULD NOT BE ON A WHEEL THET STEERS). ON A WHIM, I CHECKED THE WHEEL THAT WAS ON THE DRIVER'S REAR SIDE AND FOUND IT WAS CRACKED AS WELL. I SPRAYED SOAPY WATER AND FOUND IT WAS NOT BUBBLING. I CALLED THE LOCAL JAGUAR DEALER, WHO STATED THEY HAVE NOT HAD ISSUES WITH THEIR RIMS, AND NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THEM. I FIND THE CRACKING RIMS TO BE A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. MY WIFE AND I HAVE SPENT APPROXIMATELY $600 ON WHEEL REPAIRS. EVERY FACTORY ORIGINAL WHEEL ON THE CAR HAS BEEN CRACKED; SOME MORE THAN ONCE. WE HAVE ALSO SPENT A LOT OF MONEY ON NEW TIRES BECAUSE THE RIMS WERE CRACKED AND DESTROYED SOME OF THE TIRES' SIDEWALLS. THE MOST RECENT CRACKS WERE DOCUMMENTED VIA PHOTOS FROM MY IPHONE. I HAVE HEARD OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVING ISSUED WITH THEIR JAGUAR RIMS, YET I HAVE NOT SEEN A RECALL ON THIS ITEM. IT REALLY SHOULD BE. THIS IS THE CAR WE TAKE OUR FOUR-YEAR-OLD TO DAYCARE. WE ALSO USE THE CAR FOR FAMILY OUTTINGS AND SHOPPING. *TT
