2015 Audi Q7 problems

audi logo

The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The Q7 was the first SUV sold by Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi's second SUV, the Q5, was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled a third SUV model, the Q3, which went on sale in the third quarter of 2011, and a fourth SUV model, the Q2, which went on sale in November 2016. The Q7 shares a Volkswagen Group MLB platform and chassis with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg.

The Q7 is the second largest vehicle from Audi, after its exterior size was being surpassed by the Q6 since 2022. While the Q7 has been the flagship SUV in Audi's product portfolio, a top-of-the-line model with a lower roof, called the Audi Q8, was released in 2018.

It was one of the vehicles involved in the Volkswagen emissions scandal, with the company ordered to buy back some of the affected cars manufactured between 2009 and 2012. The Q7 is also subject to hundreds of NTSB complaints with many relating to potentially catastrophic engine failure issues, and a class-action lawsuit related to squealing brakes.

Common 2015 Audi Q7 problems

The Audi Q7, a luxury midsize SUV produced since 2005, has been known to have several common problems across its generations. The following issues have been reported by owners of the 2015 Audi Q7:

  • Knock Sensor: A malfunctioning knock sensor can cause reduced acceleration and potential engine damage. This issue has been reported in Q7 models ranging from 2007 to 2012, and it can be indicated by the check engine light coming on.
  • Front Headrests: Some drivers have reported uncomfortable front headrests that tilt too far forward, causing back pain or neckache while driving. This issue has been reported in models from 2007 to 2012.
  • Seat Belt Problems: Several Audi Q7 drivers have reported problems with the Q7 seatbelts, including fraying belts, rear seatbelts that become unlocked from the locked position, and seatbelts that stay locked. In 2021, Audi recalled thousands of Q7s for a seatbelt locking retractor malfunction.
  • Gearbox Oil Leak: Oil might escape from a faulty joint in the gearbox oil line of Q7s manufactured from 1 September to 31 December 2019. This issue can lead to reduced performance and requires replacement of the line to solve the problem.
  • Front Shock Absorbers: There have been issues reported regarding the front shock absorber forks on Q7s built from 27 November and 18 December 2018. Check with an Audi dealer if your Q7 is among those affected, because the forks will need to be replaced if it is.
  • Third-Row Seats: In the event of a collision, the third-row seats of some Q7s constructed between 1 May 2015 and 30 September 2016 could deform. An additional support bracket can be installed at an Audi dealer to prevent this from occurring.
  • Front Headrests Locking Mechanism: The locking mechanism in the front headrests might not function correctly in examples made from 1 July to 30 September 2019, and will need to be replaced.
  • Connection between Steering Shaft and Steering Rack: A small number of Q7 models built between 1 June 2015 and 28 February 2019 could have a problem where the bolts connecting the steering rack and steering shaft can work loose. This issue requires inspection by a technician if it is present.
  • Overheating: A heating element in front of the forward-facing camera in the windscreen can overheat on some examples manufactured from 1 August to 14 November 2019. If yours is affected, it'll need to have modifications carried out by a technician at an Audi dealer and also have updated software installed.
  • Faulty Crash Sensors: Certain Q7s might have faulty crash sensors fitted in both of the car's front doors. These are connected to its side airbags. Only 31 examples are said to have been affected by this recall, which was issued in 2020.
  • Rear Axle Suspension Link Nuts: One or more nuts that do not meet the specifications might have been fitted on the rear axle suspension links. This recall, issued in 2021, is said to have affected 10,089 vehicles and can be resolved by contacting your local Audi dealer and having the problem fixed at no cost to owners.

These common issues should be taken into consideration when purchasing a used 2015 Audi Q7. Regular maintenance and inspections can help mitigate some of these problems, but it is essential to be aware of these recurring issues before making a decision.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-04
  • VIN: wa1dgafe6fd
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: On 7/4 as I was merging onto the highway I was accelerating to merge onto the main lanes of traffic. I pressed on the accelerator to pickup speed, but when I let off the pedal the vehicle felt like it was continuing to accelerate similar to being on cruise control. I felt like I did not have control of the vehicle. I pressed on the brake pedal and let go to see if it would disengage the acceleration, but it did not. I then continued to press down on the brake pedal and pull over to the emergency lane and park the car. I had total of 6 passengers in vehicle with me, 4 adult and 2 children. After being pulled over I checked to insure the pedal was not stuck on any floor mats, and it was not. I was lucky that there was no traffic on the holiday to avoid any collisions. I carefully resumed to my destination and the vehicle operated normally. I reported to AudiUSA via online chat requesting advice. They suggested I contact a local service center who would charge me to diagnose the vehicle. I have not taken any steps yet given they typically will charge me regardless of determining any issues and identify some other upsell opportunity for service. I'm wondering if anyone else has reported this experience for an Audi Q7 2015 and any actions taken. Also if there is any government programs for safety inspections for unintended acceleration of vehicles. I would have expected Audi or any manufacturer to offer a complimentary inspection given the safety concerns. Thanks.

The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle's front end was caved in which caused damage to the radiator and brake line. The contact had a concussion and bruises on the upper chest due to the seat belt and whiplash. There was no medical treatment at the scene, but the contact did go to the hospital the next day. • VIN: WA1LGAFE7FD

  • Summary: I am writing to report a problem with Faulty electronic control monitors (ECM). This is a vehicle safety problem, because if the ECM is faulty, drivers won't know when there is truly a problem. Approximately 2 weeks ago, my vehicle check engine light came on. I don't drive the car that often, so I scheduled an appointment and took a picture. The day of my appointment the light wasn't on. The report number 251149 shows a diagnosis of a faulty ECM. I believe there is a problem with the manufacturing, because my car is a 2015 and report numbers 185124 and 180866 also reflect faulty information and electronic control monitors. This shouldn't happen in a car that is ~6 years old and has only 50,000 miles.

Negative 2015 Audi Q7 car reviews

  1. Clair Hirthe 2024-10-01

Let's talk about this car. While it has some great features, there are some areas that could use improvement. For example, the controls can be a bit confusing, especially when it comes to safety features. Unlike other modern vehicles, the front sensors don't alert you when parking unless you enable the feature or go into reverse first. This can be non-intuitive and frustrating. Additionally, the side assist only works as a blind spot assist and has strict parameters for when it can be used. While the interior looks nice, some of the controls are not as intuitive as they could be, such as the AC and navigation system. Overall, while there are some areas for improvement, this car still has some great features to offer. However, if you're looking for something with more intuitive controls, you may want to consider a Lexus or Infinity vehicle.

  2. Deangelo Jakubowski 2024-09-25

The product released that year was expedited to accommodate the new model, resulting in significant issues with brake durability, road handling, tire life, alignment, and rattling. Unfortunately, this has led to a poor purchase experience. Despite our efforts to address these issues with the dealership and audio team, they have not taken appropriate action to rectify the situation. We have had to realign the vehicle five times, with the first instance occurring within a month of purchase, and the results have only lasted for a maximum of 30 days.

  3. Trenton Zieme 2024-08-20

I'm having some trouble with the layout of the center console. It's a bit frustrating because I have to take my eyes off the road to use the radio/navigation MMI controls. The cup holders are also a bit far back for my liking. I've been having some difficulty with the voice control, but I'm sure it's just a matter of getting used to it. The radio knob is a bit out of the way, which can make it difficult to find a station when I'm driving in an unfamiliar area. The cruise control can also be a bit visually difficult to see. Additionally, I'm not a fan of the wiper system because when I turn them on, the rear wipers seem to go on too due to its location on the stick. Finally, the vehicle has quite a bit of road noise. I was hoping to get better fuel mileage with the diesel, but I'm only getting 25 mpg on the highway.

  4. Candido Erdman 2024-08-12

The Q7 is an SUV with average performance. However, the electronics can be confusing and the maintenance and repair costs are quite high.

  5. Nicolas Wiegand 2024-03-28

The brakes on this car unfortunately do not last very long when replaced, and the dealer has stated that it is normal for the car to consume large quantities of oil, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the AC fan does not move air very well, although the dealer has checked it and confirmed that it is working normally. The moon roof and perforated cover can be a bit finicky, but when they work, they are great. The build quality of this 90s Hyundai is not the best, but with proper care, it can still hold up. While the supercharged 3.0l engine may not be the strongest, the newer version is definitely an improvement. In terms of fuel economy, it gets 12 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, which is not the best, but still decent. For comparison, my 2015 Ford Expedition with a 3.5l ecoboost engine gets 16 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg on the interstate. Overall, this car has its flaws, but with proper care and maintenance, it can still be a reliable and enjoyable ride.

  5. Dave Von 2024-09-20

Great SUV! However, I had an issue with the gas tank lid not opening one time, even with the emergency opener. Luckily, I had enough gas to drive to the dealership. I didn't need roadside assistance, so please don't send anyone to fix this minor issue.
