2021 Audi Q7 problems
The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi, unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The Q7 was the first SUV sold by Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi's second SUV, the Q5, was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled a third SUV model, the Q3, which went on sale in the third quarter of 2011, and a fourth SUV model, the Q2, which went on sale in November 2016. The Q7 shares a Volkswagen Group MLB platform and chassis with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg.
The Q7 is the second largest vehicle from Audi, after its exterior size was being surpassed by the Q6 since 2022. While the Q7 has been the flagship SUV in Audi's product portfolio, a top-of-the-line model with a lower roof, called the Audi Q8, was released in 2018.
It was one of the vehicles involved in the Volkswagen emissions scandal, with the company ordered to buy back some of the affected cars manufactured between 2009 and 2012. The Q7 is also subject to hundreds of NTSB complaints with many relating to potentially catastrophic engine failure issues, and a class-action lawsuit related to squealing brakes.

Common 2021 Audi Q7 problems
The 2021 Audi Q7 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car model. These issues include:
- Knock Sensor: Several Audi Q7 owners have encountered a situation where their check engine light comes on, indicating a problem with the knock sensor. Malfunctioning knock sensors can often lead to reduced acceleration and potential engine damage.
- Front Headrests: Some Audi Q7 drivers have reported uncomfortable front headrests that tilt too far forward, causing back pain or neckache while driving. Although the Audi Q7 front headrest can be tilted further back, some drivers say the range of movement is insufficient for comfortable driving.
- Rear Axle: Audi has recalled more than 31,000 vehicles, including the 2021 Q7 model, because of a problem with the rear axles alignment, causing uneven wear on the rear tire. As part of the repair procedure, dealerships were supposed to inspect the alignment of the rear axle. However, the repair instructions provided by Audi should have included this crucial step. As a result, the rear axle may remain misaligned, causing premature wear on the rear tires.
- Leaking Sunroof: Several vehicle owners have reported sunroof leaks causing electrical problems with radio speakers and other electrical such as indicators and lights. This issue is more common in the 2007 Audi Q7 model.
- Suspension/Shocks: A few of the most common issues with Audi Q7 air suspension systems are the suspension warning light coming on, loss of ride height and noisy sounds from the suspension system. While it’s possible to drive an Audi Q7 with a faulty air suspension, it’s not recommended. Driving with a defective system can lead to safety issues and more damage to the vehicle.
- In-Car Electronics: The infotainment system in the 2021 Audi Q7 has been criticized for being slow or impossible to pair with CarPlay, often requiring the vehicle to be stopped and turned off before attempting to pair again. The phone connectivity is also reported to be flaky, with the mapping/music/display system freezing often and requiring a hard reboot. The digital dashboard has also been reported to stop working, requiring replacement under warranty.
These issues have been reported by owners of the 2021 Audi Q7, and while some may be covered under warranty, others may require costly repairs. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these common problems before making a purchasing decision.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-28
- VIN: WA1AXAF70MD
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: My car first had a warning “Electrical system: malfunction! Please contact Service.” I made a appointment at my Audi dealership 2 days later, but the next day i got more warnings. “Automatic start/stop system: malfunction!” then my power steering was not working. I decided to drive straight to the service department that afternoon, but never made it. In rush hour traffic on a busy street, my Q7 started beeping every warning - “Electrical system: malfunction! Safely stop vehicle”, “Drive system: malfunction! Stop vehicle safely” and the vehicle decreased speed then abruptly turned off. I was so scared that I would get hit by the traffic zooming around me. It wouldn't go into neutral and my parking brake was engaged blinking. I put on my hazard lights and called 911 for traffic assistance while sitting in my car. I was able to safely exit and after calling Audi, I could get my car into neutral and move it off the busy street with the help of some good Samaritans. I had the car towed to Audi. The service department said they have seen this a handful of times and that it's a problem with the accelerator/generator.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-13
- VIN: WA1LXAF71MD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Car displayed electrical Issue when driving daughter to school. Let husband know but was only a yellow warning and had a full day planned. I unfortunately assumed it was just a battery issue and continued with my day, but made an appointment at Audi for repair. I drove to my next appointment and the yellow warning moved to a red warning but I was 20 minutes from home. I called my husband and warned him I’d probably not make it all the way home, I made it another 10 miles and then it completely turned off on the freeway, I was prepared and had stayed in the right lane thinking this could be coming. Towed the car to Audi, they are ordering parts and warned it could be 4 weeks before I got my car back. The “generator” needs to be replaced.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-24
- VIN: WA1VXAF77MD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Per carfax, my preowned 2021 Q7 with 9k miles has had several visits to audi dealerships. The car was eventually used for a buy back. That said, Audi USA "fixed" the vehicle and sold it. The car is NOT fixed and as the new owner I've waited 2 weeks after buying this car to drive and possess it only to have the battery warning light back on the dashboard after taking possession today. The car was previously at an audi dealership before it was cleared to be shipped to me. It seems Audi is unable to fix this car. I will need to tow it now to another audi dealership as I'm afraid the car will lose all power during any attempt to drive it back to a dealership.

- Summary: on Sep 17 2023 my wife was driving her Audi Q7. which has 25,780 miles. She drove to a parking lot for a hiking trip, pressed on the brake and the car instead of stopping accelerated. She kept trying to press the brake, however the car did not stop until it hit a tree. The car has been towed to our house and it is not driveable. The car has not been inspected yet. I plan on calling the Audi dealer on Monday, Sep 18th. No lights appeared before the incident.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-12
- VIN: WA1AXAF79MD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving with my 4 year-old daughter a notification appeared on the driver display that there is an “Electrical Malfunction” and to call the service department. A few minutes later, while actively driving on the same busy road in my town, the vehicle completely turned off, including the power steering and ABS breaks. I was stuck in the middle of a busy intersection with no hazard lights and no ability to even shift the vehicle into neutral to move it. I was genuinely concerned for my safety and the safety of my daughter, as we were stranded in the middle of a busy intersection during rush hour. It was a harrowing experience to say the least. Eventually we had the vehicle towed. When I called Audi, they informed me that they suspected it was the “starter generator” and that they were aware of the issue, but this was the first I had heard of it. They subsequently confirmed that it was the starter generator and are less than accommodating.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-27
- VIN: WA1VXAF71MD
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The seat belt has now come unlocked from the locked position multiple times without unbuckling the seat. This is an issue because it's the seat belt used to install an infant car seat, so the car seat is not locked into place, which could be a major issue in the event of a crash. The seat belt retractor has randomly unlocked multiple times after being locked into place. The car dealership was unable to replicate the problem, but it has since occurred multiple times at home.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-23
- VIN: WA1VXAF71MD
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The right rear seat belt locking retractor, which was locked when I put my son in his car seat, became unlocked in motion during our trip while his car seat was in use. I check the lock each time I place him in his car seat, and it was locked at the beginning of our journey. Having an unlocked safety belt puts a child at risk since their car seat can't be properly secured with an unlocked safety belt. The retractor had worked prior to this instance since I started using it with our car seat 3 months ago. I have reached out to the Audi dealership and have not heard back.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

One while the wife was driving approximately 20 MPH the vehicle suddenly shut off in the middle of the road. The vehicle was later towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the alternator was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact was informed by the service advisor that the failed alternator was a known issue and the manufacturer had extended the warranty for the alternator and the replacement alternator was on a ten-week delay due to the high demand for the part. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 27,000.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-15
- VIN: WA1LXAF78MD
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: 285/40R21 At the end of a Vermont ski trip, left to return home on the morning of 3/15/23 at approximately 8am. Outside temperature was approximately 30 deg F and it was snowing. Due to partially snow-covered roadways, speeds were limited to 35-40 mph. After driving for approximately 20 minutes, the tire pressure warning indicated, followed approximately 30 seconds later by catastrophic sidewall failure and complete tire deflation. The rapid loss of tire pressure combined with the slippery road service was extremely dangerous and we were very fortunate in steering the car to a safe parking area without losing control or colliding with other nearby vehicles. Audi roadside assistance was contacted and the car was towed to a local dealer. Upon inspection, the failed tire (original OEM supplied) showed no evidence of puncture, only catastrophic failure of the sidewall. The failed tire is being held at the dealer in Rutland, VT. Because of a similar failure on 11/12/22 with another of the (4), original OEM tires, all (4) tires were replaced with Pirelli tires as it was no longer safe to continue driving on any of the original Continentals.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-11
- VIN: WA1LXAF78MD
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: 285/40R21 I was pulling out of a parking lot onto Rt 40, a secondary, 2-lane road, at approximately 6pm. As I accelerated to approximately 30 mph, without warning I heard a loud noise and felt the pull of the right front tire. I pulled off into a gas station parking area that was nearby and was very fortunate to have avoided an accident due to the significant traffic at the time. Upon inspection, the tire had a complete and catastrophic failure of the sidewall, stranding me at that location until Audi roadside assistance transported the vehicle to our local dealer approximately an hour later.

- VIN: WA1LXAF78MD
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Multiple warnings indicating to contact dealer (Lane departure, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, electric system malfunction, steering malfunction) then a few minutes later transmission failure and engine failure imminent.... attempted to move out of traffic. Luckily, I made it to the right lane before the steering shut down, then the transmission failed (stepping on the gas caused the engine to rev, but no power was delivered to the wheels), and last the car completely died. Had to have it towed to dealership. Dealership confirmed that the starter/generator failed.

Safely stop vehicle") along with a host of other error messages (Brakes: malfunction, Steering: malfunction, Parking brake: malfunction, Vehicle lights: malfunction, Stabilization control (ESC/ABS): malfunction, Drive system: malfunction, Transmission: malfunction). The car was undrive-able at this point, coasted to a stop and could not be restarted while on an active roadway. The car had to be towed to the dealership, where it still remains today. * Components or systems malfunctioned: Electrical system, brakes, steering, parking brake, vehicle lights, stabilization control (ESC/ABS), drive system, transmission. It is available at the Audi dealership service location for inspection * My safety was put in significant danger due to the car shutting down on an active roadway with no control over the vehicle. * The problem has been confirmed by the dealer. * The vehicle has been inspected by the dealership service center but not by police or insurance representatives. * Many warning lamps and messages appeared within an hour of the car becoming inoperable.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your new vehicle! It can be exciting to learn about all the new technology features. It sounds like you're really loving your SUV so far!

I purchased a 4 cylinder base model in April, so I have owned the car for 7 months. In May and June, I made cross country trips between Florida and California to visit and help my parents. The vehicle was flawless in every way. It was loaded completely with 2nd and 3rd row seats to accommodate luggage, coolers, and a lot of safety equipment/tools for the trip. Crossing the Rockies and Sierra mountains was no problem for the turbo 4 all-wheel-drive vehicle. The installed Nav and Car Play were perfect and had no troubles. The ride was so comfortable that I had no trouble driving 12 hours per day, stopping each day before sundown in hotels. I would absolutely buy this SUV again, and I am sold on Audi. I know that individual vehicles can be good or bad, but I am as happy as possible with the Q7. I paid 55k for mine, being that it is a base model, but with leather, Nav, Sirius Radio, wifi, sunroof, all-wheel drive, adjustable suspension, automatic emergency braking, power and heated front seats, it has everything that I need. In a world where all vehicles are incredibly expensive, I consider this luxury SUV an outstanding value. As an owner, I am very happy.

Hello! We bought our Q7 from its original owner with 80K miles in Aug 2023 and we've been loving it ever since! The fit and finish are top notch and it drives and handles exceptionally well. We did notice a lack of storage in the front while travelling, which was a bit of a bummer. However, on a recent 2300 road trip, we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was getting 26mpg at 75-80 mph! The third row seat is a bit small compared to our 2013 Toyota Sienna, but overall we're very happy with our purchase. We do wish that Audi offered second row captain seats in the Q7, especially since they've been building this generation since 2017MY. Thank you for reading!

This is my first Audi, the Q7, and I absolutely love it! The ride is silky smooth, the styling is beautiful, and the interior is elegant. The dashboard is easy to read, intuitive to manage, and well thought out. The car has great acceleration and hugs the road well. I had a wonderful experience purchasing the car from @AudiChandler in AZ. Every aspect of the transaction was a pleasure, and my salesperson, Jessie Becktell, was knowledgeable without being pushy. I have zero regrets and am extremely happy with both the car and the car buying experience.

The vehicle is beautiful and has great technology. It's also fun to drive. However, we made a mistake by purchasing it without considering the need for a third row to fit two car seats and a booster seat. Unfortunately, to fit all three, we had to lay down two of the seats in the middle row and push the front passenger seat up to an uncomfortable position. We were aware that the third row would not be very spacious, but it turned out to be much tighter than we expected. This car will be perfect when all the kids are in boosters or still very small and out of boosters. However, it may not be suitable for us in the future. I give it 4 stars because it checks off everything else on dad's wishlist.

I appreciate the technology and interior design. However, the 3rd row seating is not very useful and the 2.0T motor is underpowered for a vehicle of this size.

I've had this new vehicle for exactly 3 months now and unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the screen. It's been difficult to operate the GPS, Climate or simply the radio. However, I took it to the dealership 6 days ago and Audi wanted to be involved because of course, it's a new car and this problem may affect similar models. They think the screen needs to be changed and I'm hopeful that this will resolve the issue. It's frustrating to have these problems with a new car, but I'm confident that the dealership will take care of it. I'll be sure to update this review soon with more information.

I found MMI to be quite demanding and frustrating for everyone involved. It doesn't allow for the entry of new destinations while the car is in motion, drops saved destinations, and sometimes has trouble connecting via Apple Carplay. The worst part is the $85 monthly charge for updated maps and traffic. It's a shame that the nice Audi navigation graphics go to waste while we use our phone nav apps that provide traffic and updated maps for free. With only 4,000 miles on the car, I had to buy a new tire for $500 after running over a screw. Unfortunately, the run flat tire could not be repaired. It seems that Audi and Pirelli have a nice arrangement, but it's not so great for the customer. I think Audi has calculated that people won't go for all the options with the Premium Plus 3 liter if they make less than fully loaded vehicles available, so they load them all up with options you would never buy if you had the choice. For example, $400 for the door ring lights that illuminate not all!?!? I bought this car because the older Q5 I had was such a pleasure to own and drive, but I think I would have done better with Volvo this time around.

This is our first Audi and while we have had some challenges, we are hopeful that things will improve. We have had some issues with gas mileage and reliability, but we are working with our dealership to address these concerns. We have also found the beeping to be a bit excessive, but we are learning to navigate the dash and electronic display. Overall, we are committed to making this car work for us and hope to have a better experience going forward.

I haven't had the chance to drive the car much yet, but it seems to be running fine. However, I did rush into buying it and didn't realize that there is very little room for storage. The armrest and glove compartment are quite small, and there isn't even enough space for my wallet or glasses. Additionally, the back seats are partially cloth instead of leather. Overall, I'm not entirely satisfied with my purchase, especially considering the price tag of 70k. It doesn't seem like a good deal from any aspect.
