1987 Audi Quattro problems

The Audi Quattro is a road and rally car, produced by the German automobile manufacturer Audi, part of the Volkswagen Group. It was first shown at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show on 3 March. Production continued through 1991.

Background

The word quattro is derived from the Italian word for "four" to represent the fact that the vehicle delivers power to all four wheels. The name has also been used by Audi to refer to the quattro four-wheel-drive system, or any four-wheel-drive version of an Audi model. The original Quattro model is also commonly referred to as the Ur-Quattro - the "Ur-" (German for "primordial", "original", or "first of its kind") is an augmentative prefix. The idea of such a car came from the Audi engineer Jörg Bensinger.

The Audi Quattro was the first rally car to take advantage of the then-recently changed rules that allowed the use of four-wheel drive in competition racing. It won consecutive competitions for the next two years. To commemorate the success of the original vehicle, all subsequent Audi production automobiles with this four-wheel-drive system were badged with the trademark quattro with a lower case "q" letter.

The Audi Quattro shared many parts and platform with the Coupé version of the Audi 80 (B2). The quattro was internally designated Typ 85, a production code it shared with the quattro versions of the Audi Coupé. Its characteristic flared wheelarches were styled by Martin Smith. The Audi Quattro also had independent front and rear suspension.

Common 1987 Audi Quattro problems

The Audi Quattro, produced in 1987, is known for its performance and handling capabilities. However, like any other car, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most common issues with the Audi Quattro 1987:

  • Transmission Problems: Some Quattro models may also experience transmission problems, such as slipping or harsh shifting. This can be caused by low transmission fluid levels or a faulty transmission control module. If you experience any issues with your Quattro's transmission, it's important to have it inspected by a qualified technician to determine the underlying cause and prevent further damage.
  • Electrical Issues: Some Quattro models may also experience electrical problems, such as faulty sensors, malfunctioning power windows, and problems with the car's audio system. These problems can be frustrating and difficult to diagnose, so it's important to work with a qualified technician who has experience working with Audi vehicles.
  • Suspension Issues: Like all high-performance sports cars, the Quattro can be prone to wear and tear on its tires and brakes. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent premature wear and ensure that your Quattro performs at its best.
  • Seized Calipers: Seized calipers are a common problem in the Audi Quattro, and they can be sorted by fitting exchange (pattern) replacements. A seized handbrake mechanism is generally also a DIY prospect to free off.
  • ABS Sensors: ABS sensors are no longer available, so used parts are the only option when the system fails an MoT.
  • Suspension Bushes: Age will take its toll on the suspension bushes, with the wishbones being common as well as front and rear subframes. Later cars have also been known to show cracks in the subframes at the rear.
  • Interior Issues: The interior of the Audi Quattro can also experience problems, such as issues with the central locking system, power windows, and electronic stability control system. Some Audi Quattro models have also had problems with the dashboard, which can cause the instrument cluster to fail.
  • Exterior Issues: Exterior issues can range from minor scratches and dents to more significant problems such as rust and corrosion. The Audi Quattro has been known to develop rust in the rear quarter panels, and corrosion can occur on the door handles and roof rails.
  • Mechanical Issues: Mechanical issues can involve the suspension system, brakes, and transmission. Some owners of Audi Quattro have reported issues with the suspension system, such as failing shocks and struts. The brakes may also experience problems with the calipers and rotors, and the transmission can fail due to problems with the clutch and gearbox.

In conclusion, the Audi Quattro 1987 is a high-performance sports car that is known for its capabilities. However, like any other car, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these issues and ensure that your Quattro performs at its best.

Why was the Audi Quattro so good?

The quattro cutting-edge technology offers dynamism and safety as well as, at the same time, conveying an exclusive, unique driving pleasure. An Audi with quattro drive also makes safe and trouble-free progress where two-wheel drive vehicles no longer have propulsion – for example on slippery or unpaved road surfaces.

What happened to Audi 5000?

Reported sudden unintended acceleration

During model years 1983–1987, Audi's U.S. sales fell after several recalls of Audi 5000 models, which were associated with reported incidents of sudden unintended acceleration linked to six deaths and 700 accidents.

What is the top speed of the Audi 5000?

Road & Track were able to reach a top speed of 113 mph (182 km/h) in the federalized car, slower than a naturally aspirated European market 2.1 E. In the US, reflecting the Audi's luxury connotations, 90 percent of 5000s received the costlier "S" equipment package.

Why is quattro famous?

With quattro, Audi has achieved a milestone in automotive history - no other manufacturer had a high-speed, lightweight four-wheel drive for large series to offer in 1980. The technology made its debut in 1980 at the Geneva Motor Show in the so-called original-quattro.

Are quattro cars faster?

The same principle of maximising traction applies to quattro performance models, which are capable of faster acceleration and cornering thanks to the additional grip that comes from having all four wheels driven.

Why is Audi Quattro Italian?

Used by Audi since 1980, the 'quattro' name applies to the four-wheel-drive system fitted to the Bavarian brand's road and racing cars. Audi spell the system itself with a lowercase 'q' after the Italian word for 'four' - Quattro with a capital 'Q' applies to the iconic Group B rally car from the 1980s.
