Common 2023 Audi Q5 problems

The Audi Q5, a midsize SUV, is known for its style, technology, and reliability. However, certain model years have experienced more challenges than others. Here are some common problems with the Audi Q5, specifically the 2023 model, based on complaints from owners:

  • Excessive oil consumption: Turbo Q5 models, particularly the 2011 model, suffer significantly from excessive oil consumption. This issue requires routine checks to ensure the oil level is not low, as a lack of oil can lead to catastrophic engine failure.
  • Premature failure of timing chains: Audi Q5 models from 2011 and 2012 often see premature failure of their timing chains. Experts speculate that the early failings occur due to the timing chain tensioner introducing slack. Timing chains typically have longer lifespans than timing belts, but it's worth inspecting the timing chains and tensioners in these Q5s to ensure they're up to spec.
  • Issues with the start-stop system: Q5 models from 2017 to 2020 experienced issues with the start-stop system that cuts power at idle but reboots the engine once the driver presses the accelerator. Owners reported a delay in throttle response and a loss of brakes and power steering. While the system can be disabled or bypassed, Audi still needs to work out the gremlins in this fuel-efficient feature.
  • Leaking or shattered sunroofs: Several Audi Q5 models suffer from leaking or shattered sunroofs. While the potential always exists for sunroof damage, sunroofs that shatter can become a hazard, especially at speed. Leaking sunroofs can be more of a nuisance, especially in inclement weather and through the automatic car wash.
  • Fuel pump flange cracks: The fuel pump flanges on specific Audi Q5 models can develop hairline cracks that lead to minute fuel leakage. Any fuel leaks are cause for concern, but when the fuel hits internal components that may or may not retain heat, it can spark a flame.
  • Quality issues: Some owners of the 2023 Audi Q5 have reported various quality issues, such as a whining belt at cold start, a faulty alternator, a loose brake pedal, a faulty brake booster, and a hard-to-press brake pedal. These issues can affect the car's safety, performance, and reliability.
  • Audi Pre Sense safety feature: The Audi Pre Sense feature, which applies the brakes when it thinks a collision is imminent, has been reported to activate in situations where there is no chance of a collision, potentially causing safety issues and near-rear-end collisions.

These common problems with the Audi Q5, particularly the 2023 model, should be considered when purchasing or owning this vehicle. Regular maintenance and inspections can help mitigate some of these issues, but it's essential to be aware of the potential challenges that may arise.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-25
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WA1FAAFY1P2
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I am writing to file a complaint against Audi of America. My new vehicle, a 2023 Audi Q5 that I was involved in a minor car accident on [XXX]. That evening my car was side swiped during a merge after a toll both in Woodbridge, NJ off. Both vehicles were moving at relatively low speeds (30-35 mph). The damage to my car occurred on the passenger side panel and multiple air bags deployed including all 4 curtains as well as the passenger side seat air bag (though I did not have a passenger in the car with me). My car was towed to a local lot and has been with an auto body shop since [XXX]. Though all repairs were completed by mid-January, the car has been untouched since then due to the lack of availability of one part - the right front seat air bag. Part# 80A880242G which has been on order since Dec. 14th. So far, Audi has repeatedly claimed that the part ETA is unknown. My research online through Audi and car forums has shown that many other Audi drivers who have been in accidents are in the same predicament because the side air bag is deploying even when unnecessary creating a parts shortage with no solution. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-26
  • VIN: WA1EAAFY7P2
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Audi pre-sense slammed on brakes on a dry empty road while I was driving between 45-50mph. Had there been a car behind me, as there usually is in this location, I would certainly have been rear-ended. As it was, my head, neck and back got a heavy jolt, and of course the whole thing distracted me from safely driving the car. I had to pull over to catch my breath (just because it was scary) and figure out how to turn the thing off for the drive home. The dealer checked the computer system and reported that there were no "faults" recorded there. In other words, the system is working "properly". Dealer cannot turn it permanently off because it's a SAFETY feature. The only way to prevent future dangerous deployments is to navigate through 3 layers of touchscreens to turn it off *each time I start the car*, but this has to be done every trip. I have had the brakes erroneously applied several times at lower speeds, one of those times (in the 2018 model) the seatbelt reeled me back into the seat squeezing my chest. Again, no obstacle or hazard of any kind was present, just the hazard of erratic and aggressive car automation.

BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-18
  • VIN: WA1EAAFY7P2
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Car suddenly applies brakes and sounds alarms when driving out of a sloping driveway or parking lot. It appears that the sensors point at the pavement at the inflection point of the sloped driveway/road and detects that as an obstacle. This happens regularly at certain parking lots - all the blinking and braking make it very difficult to navigate into the traffic lane safely. Audi dealership assures me this is normal. It also suddenly brakes (sometimes) and sounds alarms as I back out of my own gently sloped driveway. I am always paying attention to my surroundings and not operating a phone or doing other activities while I'm driving. There is unquestionably NO hazard or obstacle. The risk for damage to my neck is fairly low at these speeds, but when I'm backing I generally look over my shoulder, and a good jolt (even at low speeds) is pretty unpleasant and could definitely cause injury.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-09
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WA1EAAFYXP2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My wife was pulling into a parking spot when all of a sudden the cars engine accelerated causing the car to jump one curb, hit a step and striking a pole before finally the brakes stopped the car from going through a storefront. None of the safety crash features stopped the vehicle. My wifes foot was on the brake, not the accelerator. Previously we had the vehicle in for service to reset the computer that kept freezing. Unfortunately we did not research Audi in detail before we bought. Since this occurrence, we have seen that some of Audi's models have had a history of "unintended sudden acceleration" and that there was actually a class action lawsuit years ago. After reading about those occurrences, we believe that this is what occurred. Audi corporate sent their engineers to download the computer data. They concluded that there was no computer error and no evidence of impact. Clearly there was impact since the car had to be repaired. I have since driven the exact route into the parking lot to see if possibly my wifes foot could have been on the accelerator. I made a right turn, quick left turn and quick right turn into the parking spot and my foot was on the brake the entire time. All third parties that have looked at the vehicle don't believe that there was a computer acceleration malfunction because the engineers said that they didn't identify a problem. I will never drive an Audi again. After this incident, I have spoken with other Audi owners and there seems to be issues with the german engineered "safety" controls. Apply brakes when not necessary, lane control jerking back into traffic when in an exit only lane. I am thankful that no person was in front of my vehicle when this occurred.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-03
  • VIN: WA1GAAFY5P2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: we purchased a new 2023 Audi q5 at the Audi dealer at Wesley Chapel. On October 3, we noticed a malfunctioning indicator light on the dashboard. We took the vehicle back to the dealer to fix the problem. One of the service agents told us, everything was good, just a software update. I also notified the problem to manufacturing company and still no solution. It has been 4 months since when the problem occurred. The malfunction indicator lamp is on all the time when we turn the engine on and while driving. There are a lot of safety concerns while driving.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-11
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WA1ABAFY4P2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I moved forward and hit this stone and then when I hit the stone. I tried to reverse and I lost control of my car. The car began spinning and I had no control of the car. The car finally crashed on it’ s own. I could not brake or nothing. I was rushed to the emergency room. I had a headache and my body was sore.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-26
  • VIN: WA1BBAFY5P2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was riding the car and all of a sudden tv my car stopped right in the middle of the street, totally shut down and non of the keys were working not even the hazard lights to alert other cars to turn around me. So I had to get out of my car right in the middle of the street to let the other cars to move away . I finally got back in the car, tried on and off switch couple of times and finally engine started . Audi took the car and they are saying it’s alternator failed and they have replaced it

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-14
  • VIN: WA1GAAFY5P2
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: This has happened several times. After waiting for traffic to clear to make a left turn, as I start to accelerate, the Audi Presense triggers (message comes up) and slams on the brakes. There was no traffic that could have caused any hazard. It could have left me stranded in oncoming traffic. There are many other people reporting this same issue on Audi forums.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-05
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WA1BBAFY5P2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: My wife and I were in the 2023 Audi Q5 with 1000 miles. I had complained to the dealer and manufacturer that this car was unsafe to drive. On June 9, 2023 I was driving slowly in my community. I tried to stop at a stop sign. NO brakes then at the same time the car had unintended sudden acceleration. We had no control, no brakes and hit a fence and shrubbery and cement fence. All airbags deployed.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
  • VIN: WA1GAAFYXP2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On 21 April 2023 while driving on a highway, the US specification 2023 Audi Q5 engine began to make noise and a yellow engine warning light came on. During the process of moving the vehicle off the highway to a safe location to stop, the engine began to progressively lose power and the noise became much more noticeable and distinctly sounded like metal on metal. The Audi repair shop provided a report of diagnostic tests run but did not open the engine for further inspection. The repair shop ordered a replacement engine. Due to delays in delivery of a replacement engine, the vehicle is still at the repair shop five weeks after the incident. The vehicle had less that 550 miles (900 kilometers) on the odometer and had been in service only one month from delivery. The vehicle was sold by Audi USA through Military Auto Source direct to the user in Germany. The vehicle was used only in Germany and is presently at the Audi repair shop in Germany (Autohaus Lutz, Vaihinger Str. 91, 70567 Stuttgart, Germany). Based upon cursory research of existing recall issues for this model vehicle, the problem appears very similar to a connecting rod failure identified for engines manufactured in a prior period. Attempts to work with Audi USA to identify if this is indeed the same connecting rod problem and attempts to obtain confirmation that this engine was checked/tested for the known connecting rod issue both have proved unsuccessful. The local Audi repair shop has not been forthcoming with details of what specifically caused the engine failure or actions that Audi is taking to identify the source of the problem. This is being brought to the attention of the NHTSA because this may be a continuation of the connecting rod issue previously identified and declared resolved by Audi.

Negative 2023 Audi Q5 car reviews

  1. Thurman Osinski 2024-10-01

The drive feels very solid and grounded, setting it apart from Japanese cars. However, the design of MMI can be awkward and chaotic. If you're looking for a car that drives well, the Q5 won't disappoint you. It's worth noting that the MMI design may take some getting used to.

  2. Samir Auer 2024-07-21

The Audi Q5 is often considered a luxury SUV, but let's take a closer look at its real performance and suitability as a family car. When it comes to the chassis, the Audi dealer assured me that the standard chassis in combination with 19-inch wheels is very comfortable, so I decided not to order the optional air suspension due to delivery issues in 2022. However, I found that this combination is not as comfortable as advertised and may not be suitable for normal daily use. While Audi does offer higher comfort chassis solutions without air suspension, it seems unnecessary to pay extra for the same thing. Moving on to the interior, I found that the seats are not very comfortable and it can be difficult to find the right driving position. The center console only has two small drawers that aren't very useful, and the compartment below the elbow rest is the smallest in its class. Additionally, the slideable phone charger takes up space that could be used for cupholders, which are the only loading compartment of reasonable size. The material selection is not up to the level of luxury, as the plastic materials are not very soft and are more on par with standard class materials. On the other hand, the piano gloss on the middle console is a nice touch, although not very practical. Unfortunately, Audi has removed the remote control of the touch display from the middle console, so the only option is to work with the touchscreen directly while driving, which can be inconvenient. Additionally, the navigation does not provide alternative routes automatically if there is a traffic issue in front of you, and you have to hit a tiny button on the touchscreen while driving. Overall, while the Audi Q5 has some drawbacks, it still has many great features that make it a solid choice for a luxury SUV.As someone who is 179 cm tall, I found that when I adjusted the driver's seat to my liking, there was no legroom left for passengers in the rear seats. Unfortunately, the car cannot comfortably accommodate five passengers due to the large and tall tunnel. The investment in the rear seat package seems unnecessary as it only allows for the rear seats to be pulled forward, further reducing the already insufficient legroom. Additionally, the trunk size is appropriate, but the surface is not flat and there are no hooks for bags. If you are considering the Q5 as a family car, it may be worth reconsidering. It is misleading to compare this car to the GLC or X3 in terms of luxury level and driving comfort. Instead, it may be more appropriate to compare it to lower-cost options. It seems that Audi is selling low-cost solutions at a premium price.

  3. Daron Renner 2024-05-01

The Q5 is a great looking and driving car with a very comfortable ride. However, the storage space is limited compared to other cars in its class. Additionally, the technology can be frustrating at times, with Bluetooth connectivity issues and a less than intuitive interface. It's worth noting that there have been some reported issues with the infotainment system, as evidenced by the number of cars at the dealership for related issues. I did experience a problem with the motor on my power liftgate, which took some time to replace. While the Q5 does get good gas mileage, it's important to keep in mind that it requires premium fuel. It would be helpful if review sites highlighted this requirement more prominently, as premium fuel can be significantly more expensive in some areas.

  4. Cortez Bayer 2024-02-02

This is our first and last Audi, unfortunately we have had an infotainment issue since purchase. We have been working with Audi to resolve the issue, but it has been difficult to identify which of the 8 modules is causing the problem. Although we have requested that all 8 modules be replaced, Audi has declined. We have also had to replace the high pressure fuel pump and repair 2 oil leaks. We hope to resolve these issues before the 3 year warranty expires, but if not, we may have to consider other options.

Positive 2023 Audi Q5 car reviews

  1. Lonny Haag 2024-11-26

Just purchased my SUV from Audi Plano. I'm so glad I did! It drives fantastic and I'm getting so many compliments. Love it!

  2. Eusebio Hayes 2024-11-10

We absolutely love our first Audi, the '23 Audi Q5 S Line Quattro! The car's overall aesthetics are stunning, and the luxurious leather and walnut interior make it such a pleasure to drive. Audi's tight integration of technology and ride quality is evident in this vehicle, especially with the 2.0L Turbocharged Mild Hybrid-assisted motor that delivers smooth acceleration when needed, without sacrificing a solid and quiet ride. The Q5 package also includes top-of-the-line safety features, making it a sound and secure car to own.

  3. Markus O'Keefe 2024-11-04

I'm glad you love the SUV! It's important to note that the charge only goes for 25 miles, so it will need to be charged every day. You may want to consider hiring an electrician to put a 220 outlet in the garage to make charging more convenient. I understand that this may require some extra work, but it will be worth it in the long run.

  4. Gerson Flatley 2024-10-16

    Great car!

  5. Charlie Hane 2024-09-19

The driver's chair is really comfortable and the dashboard is easy to read. The cabin feels luxurious. I have the SQ5 and it's such a joy to drive! I wish I had bought one sooner!
