ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
- VIN: WA1LFAFP9CA
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2012 Audi Q5 2.0 engine failure 72,000 miles The dealership performed a tear down of my engine and had an inspector from Audi care come to inspect the damaged engine. It was determined the tensioner /timing chain caused the engine failure. Prior to the inspection, I did research and informed the service manager at the dealership that there was a known issue regarding this exact problem. He said he would have to perform The tear down to determine the cause. He contacted me to confirm it was indeed the cause. Now after more research, I saw there was a class action lawsuit regarding this exact issue. It was settled in 20/& or 2019 , I believe I bought my car in 2020, from an Audi dealership. Who I now assume should have been aware of this known issue and class action settlement. I would like to report this past known issue to the NTSBA. I am being told I will have to pay a large amount of money after my extended warranty will only cover a portion of the repair. This was a known problem which could have put me in danger of the engine seizing will operating the vehicle.

- Summary: I have a one family, mother-in-law former owner 2012 Audi Q5 2.0T and unfortunately like others have the issue of excessive oil consumption. This started at about 75,000 miles and now at 79,000 miles it is using about 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. Of course dealers have their talking points saying this is normal. No, excessive oil consumption is not normal! Too bad Audi is not doing anything about this known problem. NAA (Never Again Audi).
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
- VIN: WA1LFAFP0CA
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The Rear Subframe was found to have two significant holes that would not allow the car to pass a safety inspection, and I was told a significant hazard that required immediate repair. This is the only part on the vehicle with rust and is the same issue of rear subframe rust that Mercedes Benz is covering under warranty on the same-year cars due to a manufacturing defect. Audi Tysons had serviced the vehicle since new but was negligent in warning me of the extreme rust or safety hazard that had developed. The first inspection by an independent shop found this issue and said it is common on Audi Q5 manufactured in this time frame. According to the repair shop, the part has a plastic protective cover that allowed water to stay trapped and is the main contributing factor. Audi refused any warranty coverage stating the warranty only covers "vehicle body sheet metal panels," but the Owner's Manual for Warranty Coverage states "-- a defect in manufacturer's material and workmanship that will result in rust perforation of the vehicle body". The Q5 is a low-mileage (87,500) vehicle that has been garaged for ~50% of its life in Northern Virginia. In summary, this is a know critical safety issue due to a manufacturing/design defect that Audi is not addressing.

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,700.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-02
- VIN: WA1WKBFP7CA
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: This 2012 Audi Q5 has an apparent bad passenger occupant sensor connection that could deactivate the vehicle's passenger-side airbags and increase the risk of injury or death in the event of a crash. It appears the problem specifically stems from a faulty connection between the passenger seat occupancy sensor and the seat heater wiring, which can cause the vehicle's computer to assume that there is no passenger present and defeat the airbag on that side. This system is typically meant to reduce the cost of repairs in a crash by not detonating unneeded airbags. Audi recently announced recall number 74E3 to fix other models with the same issue.

2012 Audi Q5 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2012 Audi Q5.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2007-2012 Audi Q7 and 2009-2012 Audi Q5 vehicles, previously repaired under NHTSA recall 16V-660. These vehicles were previously repaired with an interim repair of installing butyl tape to the fuel pump flange, until replacement remedy parts became available.
- Consequence: The butyl tape may not prevent fuel from leaking. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump flange and install butyl tape, free of charge. The recall began December 28, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 20BJ.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 23, 2018. - Components: VISIBILITY:SUN/MOON ROOF ASSEMBLY
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Audi Q5 vehicles. The sunroof drainage system may allow water to soak into the foam surrounding the side head air bag inflator canister resulting in the corrosion of the canister. If this happens, the corrosion can weaken the canister and the inflator could fracture without air bag deployment, propelling fragments into the passenger compartment, striking and causing serious injury to vehicle occupants.
- Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the inflator and either coat it or replace it, as necessary, after removing the surrounding foam, free of charge. The recall is expected to began March 2017. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69P1.

- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the flange, replacing any flanges that are cracked. If the flange is not cracked, dealers will clean the pump flange and install a butyl rubber band to protect the pump. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began November 9, 2016. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 20W9.

As you can tell from the title, I have some experience with luxury cars. My previous car was a top-of-the-line X5, which I bought brand new and paid for in cash. Unfortunately, I had a lot of little problems with it over the 7 years I owned it - trim that didn't fit, rattles, and other BMW issues. Despite these issues, I loved driving it. However, when it came time to get a new car, I decided to lease a Q5 instead of buying, just to be cautious. I'm happy to report that everything has been perfect since day one with the Q5. The fit and finish are impeccable, and driving it is a joy. Plus, the dealer has been hassle-free and even offers free car washes!

I had a terrible experience with my Audi Q5. Despite the engine type being covered in other models, Audi refused to assist me with the high pressure fuel pump and turbo failures, as well as other issues. Even though there are multiple class actions against Audi Q5, they refused to reimburse me for the $10k of repairs I had to pay for. Unfortunately, the brand no longer stands behind their cars or cares about their customers after being purchased by VW. I hope Audi takes responsibility for their defective tensioner and improves their customer service in the future.

We've been driving our Premium Plus (3.2) Q5 for about four months now, both in the city and on the highway. It's a great vehicle, very comfortable, and has plenty of power. However, we have noticed a few small issues with the car that are surprising given its $50k-ish price tag. Firstly, the multimedia system is quite outdated in design, with a control dial that scrolls in the opposite direction to other consumer devices (such as iPods), and a convoluted menu system. Secondly, the GPS is unfortunately not very useful, with maps that are at least 4-5 years old and poor routing. Lastly, we have had an issue with the gas cap cover breaking after only 4 months of use, which is a shame given the otherwise high quality construction of the car.

A little sport utility vehicle that is a really nice size, but has a hard time after a stoplight.

I purchased this car brand new in 2012. Unfortunately, after four years, the engine stopped working due to a timing chain defect. The dealership quoted me $6,100 to replace the top half of the engine, but they refused to cover any of the costs. I was disappointed with this outcome, especially since the car was relatively new and had only been driven for around 75,000 miles. I made sure to take good care of the car, getting regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance. If you're considering buying an Audi Q5, I would advise against it. It's important to do your research online, especially regarding the timing chain and transmission, as these vehicles are not always well-made.

I purchased a used 2012 Audi Q5 three years ago, and it has now accumulated 80,000 miles over its seven-year lifespan. Recently, I had to replace the engine and turbo at a cost of $14,000 due to a faulty timing chain tensioner. Unfortunately, this is a known defect, and there was even a class action suit filed, as noted in another review. Despite being a loyal customer, Audi/VW has not taken any action to address this issue. Even those few admitted into the class had to provide full service records and have their repairs prorated by mileage. It is disappointing that a car that cost $45,000 would require a new engine at only 80,000 miles. I suspect that the company may have suffered losses due to emission gate and the airbag recall, but it is still a shame. I have been a loyal VW/Audi customer for years, as have my parents, sister, and brother-in-law, but I will have to reconsider my options in the future.
