Common 2009 Audi Q5 problems
The Audi Q5, a midsize SUV, is known for its style, technology, and reliability. However, certain model years have experienced more challenges than others. Here are some common problems with the Audi Q5, specifically focusing on the 2009 model:
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Turbo Q5 models, particularly the 2011 model, suffer significantly from excessive oil consumption. This issue means checking the oil routinely to ensure it's not low, even right after oil changes. A lack of oil within the engine can lead to catastrophic failure.
- Timing Chain Tensioner Failure: Audi Q5 models from 2011 and 2012 often see premature failure of their timing chains. Experts speculate the early failings occur due to the timing chain tensioner introducing slack. Timing chains typically have longer lifespans than timing belts, but it's worth inspecting the timing chains and tensioners in these Q5s to ensure they're up to spec.
- Water Pump Issues: The 2009 Audi Q5 has been reported to have water pump issues. One owner had the water pump fail at 7,800 miles, which is a major issue covered under warranty but still a significant concern.
- Sunroof Leaks and Failures: Several Audi Q5 models suffer from leaking or shattered sunroofs. While the potential always exists for sunroof damage, sunroofs that shatter can become a hazard, especially at speed. Leaking sunroofs can be more of a nuisance, especially in inclement weather and through the automatic car wash.
- Fuel Pump Flange Cracks: The fuel pump flanges on specific Audi Q5 models can develop hairline cracks that lead to minute fuel leakage. Any fuel leaks are cause for concern, but when the fuel hits internal components that may or may not retain heat, it can spark a flame.
- S tronic Automatic Gearbox Failures: There are reports of S tronic automatic gearbox failures, which can cost more than £4000 to rectify. It's important to conduct a thorough test drive and ensure that servicing is up to date.
- Electrical Glitches: Electrical glitches are common, particularly linked to the air conditioning, boot switch, and the tyre pressure monitoring system.
It's important to note that these issues may not be exclusive to the 2009 model and could potentially affect other model years as well. When considering purchasing a used Audi Q5, it's recommended to have the vehicle fully inspected to weed out any potential lemons and ensure it's in good condition.

I'm so glad you've been searching for the perfect crossover for you and your wife for a year! The Q5 really caught your eye with its sleek exterior design, and it's great to hear that the interior is comfortable for someone as tall as you. Plus, the Q5 has plenty of power to get you where you need to go. And with a gas mileage of 19 mpg, it's not too shabby either. I hope you're enjoying your new ride after trading in your XC90 Volvo!
-
Firstly, I want to share my personal experience with my Q5. I purchased it 3 years ago with 50,000 miles and it now has 110,000 miles. I am happy to say that I have not encountered any major issues with my vehicle. I have only had to replace the brake pads (front and rear) and put new tires on. Despite the mileage, my Q5 still rides like a dream and my family and I absolutely love it. It handles bumps and rough roads with ease, making for a comfortable ride. We are even considering upgrading to a newer model, specifically a 2013 or newer. I have not taken my car to the Audi dealership as I prefer to avoid them. Instead, I had my brakes replaced at a local Belle Tire for half the price the Audi dealer quoted me. I also change my oil at Belle Tire and use Amsoil Oil ONLY in my car. I have noticed that my Q5 runs quieter with this oil than with the oil the Audi dealer uses. Lastly, I have the 3.2 engine which I find to be more solid than the 2.0. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Congratulations on your new Q5 Premium Plus with Navigation! It sounds like you made a great choice. Although you had to pay MSRP due to its popularity, it's great to hear that Audi is now offering 2.9%, 36 months financing and will make your first 2 payments. That's like 0% financing plus a $500 discount! Your wife must be thrilled with the car's handling and superior interior, not to mention the LED lights and huge side mirrors. While you mentioned that the interior space is relatively small compared to the RX350, it still sounds like the perfect car for your needs.

My wife is currently driving her second Audi, having previously owned an A4 and now an A6. As for me, I'm the designated SUV driver in the family. I used to drive a 5-year-old Nissan Murano, which was a good value and performed well, but I always envied my wife's Audis. I considered several mid-sized SUVs as a replacement, but none of them compared to the Q5. It drives like a sport sedan, while still providing all the comfort and convenience of an SUV. The size is perfect for navigating downtown and parking spaces, yet it feels very spacious inside.

I recently traded in my 2004 VW Touareg V8 with 125,000 miles and I am absolutely loving my new car! It has a sports car feel with the high ride of an SUV, making it a dream to drive. The interior is simply elegant, with Cinnamon brown leather and a deep blue exterior. I opted for the premium plus with Navigation and 19inch wheels, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. While I was considering the Volvo XC60, I ultimately chose the Audi because of its cool MMI system. The Volvo's nav felt very old school and clunky in comparison. The only downside to this car is that when the back seats fold down, there is a gap across the cargo area that a dog's feet could get caught in. Additionally, the MMI phone system is a dial rather than buttons, which can be a bit of a pain when plugging in for voicemail. Overall, I am thrilled with my new car and would highly recommend it!

The car looks great and is enjoyable to drive at high speeds. However, there have been some issues with the transmission technology, which is still relatively new. Unfortunately, Audi has not yet fully resolved these issues, and some customers, including myself, have experienced problems with the transmission. Despite their efforts to fix the issue, including replacing the mechatronics, the problem persists. As a customer, I find this situation unacceptable.
