2008 Audi A5 problems

audi logo

The Audi A5 is a series of compact executive coupé cars produced by the German automobile manufacturer Audi since June 2007. The A5 range additionally comprises the coupe, cabriolet, and "Sportback" (a five-door liftback with a fastback roofline) version of the Audi A4 saloon and estate models.

Under Audi's internal platform numbering convention, the A5 is a member of the B-platform series of vehicles, sharing its platform designation with the A4 saloon and Avant. The first generation A5 (Type 8T) is therefore a member of the B8 family, whilst the second generation model (Type 8W6) is based on the B9. Both are derived from the Volkswagen MLB (Modular Longitudinal Matrix) architecture.

First generation (2007)

Initial release

When presented at the March 2007 Geneva Motor Show, the A5 marked Audi's return to the compact executive coupé market since the (B3/B4) Audi 80 based coupé model ended production in 1996. On May 10, 2006, Audi confirmed that the A5 would go into production. The B6/B7 A4 spawned a convertible variant but not a coupé. For the fourth-generation A4 (B8), Audi decided to spin off the cabriolet, along with a new coupé and 4-door fastback sedan, into a nameplate of its own as the A5.

The A5 was the first of the B8 family of vehicles to be released (the others being the A4 and the Q5 crossover SUV), all based on the Audi MLP platform (Modular Longitudinal Platform) which underpin the next generation A6 and A8.

The A5 is the third coupé in Audi's line up, following the second generation TT and the R8. The A5 adopted design elements of the Nuvolari quattro concept car. The A5 debuted with the 3.2 litre FSI V6 engine delivering 195 kW (265 PS; 261 hp).

Common 2008 Audi A5 problems

The Audi A5, introduced in 2007, has been a popular choice for those seeking a luxurious and sporty vehicle. However, like any car, it has its share of common problems. Electrical glitches and failures are the most frequently reported issues.

Another issue that has been reported is excessive oil consumption, particularly in the 2011 model year. This issue led to a class action lawsuit against Audi, with some users reporting that the oil light illuminates after only 1,000 miles or so.

For the 2008 A5, the most commonly reported issues are carbon buildup and control arm issues. Carbon buildup can cause issues with the engine's performance, while control arm issues can affect the car's handling and suspension.

Rattles and squeaks from the interior are also a common complaint among Audi A5 owners, particularly in older models. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including loose components, worn-out parts, or poor assembly.

When purchasing a used Audi A5, it is essential to check the car's service history and ensure that it has been well-maintained. Audi vehicles can have a lifespan of between 200,000 and 250,000 miles when properly maintained, so it is crucial to look for a well-maintained unit with pristine service records.

In summary, while the Audi A5 is a luxurious and sporty vehicle, it is not without its share of common problems. Electrical glitches and failures, excessive oil consumption, carbon buildup, control arm issues, and rattles and squeaks from the interior are some of the most frequently reported issues. When purchasing a used Audi A5, it is essential to check the car's service history and ensure that it has been well-maintained.

Positive 2008 Audi A5 car reviews

I've been the proud owner of this car for a couple of months now, and I must say, it's been quite the experience! Although it may not have as much horsepower as the BMW 335, it more than makes up for it in the looks department. One day, while stopped at a red light on a busy road, a man was so captivated by my A5 that he ended up rear-ending the car in front of him! I couldn't help but feel a little flattered. It's always a treat to pull up to a restaurant and have the valet park my car right out front. And I have to admit, I get compliments on it almost every night. I just can't get enough of this car!

I'm glad to hear that your first Audi is proving to be excellent! Your loaded A5 (with all options except the S-line package) sounds fantastic, with a smooth and quiet ride that handles corners with ease. The acceleration is impressive, feeling quick and responsive (even better than your '05 Acura TL), especially in sport mode. Audi is known for delivering amazing interiors with high-quality materials, and it sounds like your A5 is no exception. While the backseat may be a bit cramped for adults, it's perfect for small kids. As a tall/big guy, I'm glad to hear that you find the front seat very comfortable. The technology in your A5 is also impressive, with the ability to import your entire Blackberry phone book in one shot and an excellent Bluetooth connection. While the MMI system may take some getting used to, it's not difficult to learn. Unfortunately, voice activation is not yet available on the A5. Overall, it sounds like your A5 is a great blend of luxury and sporty ride. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  3. Lee Stoltenberg 2024-10-20

I've owned a range of cars, from Porsche 911 to the Cayenne Turbo, from Lexus SC430 to BMW 745i and Mercedes CLS. I must say, for the money, this new AUDI is fantastic! I still wouldn't sell the 911, but for everyday commutes, the A5 not only saves a little in gas but also offers a nice comfortable ride. If you're looking for a car with all the bells and whistles and true performance, then this car is definitely for you. And if you're lucky enough to own one, you know exactly what I mean. Thank you, Audi!

Owning and driving this vehicle is such a delight! Not only is it incredibly fun to drive, but the positive attention it receives is simply unbelievable. I was pleasantly surprised to find that some people had no idea that Audi was launching an A5 model until they saw mine on the road.

  5. Arjun Hill 2024-08-27

With fuel prices the way they are, I completely understand the concern about low mileage with the 8 cyl. That's why I opted for the 6 cyl instead. The dealer had an A5 with an Audi factory installed S5 option (cosmetic kit), which gave me S-Line interior trim and upgraded 19
