2014 Acura Rdx problems
The Acura RDX is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by Acura, a luxury vehicle division of Honda, as the second crossover SUV offering from the brand after the mid-size MDX. Since it was introduced, it shared its platform with the Honda Civic and CR-V.
First generation (TB1/2; 2007)
Originally previewed as the Acura RD-X concept car, the production RDX had its debut at the 2006 New York Auto Show and went on sale on August 11, 2006. A facelifted 2010 model went on sale in August 2009, which featured the addition Acura's "power plenum" grille and a front-wheel drive option.
Engine
The first-generation RDX is powered by a 2.3-litre straight-4 turbocharged gasoline engine, rated at 240 bhp (179 kW; 243 PS) at 6,000 rpm with a torque peak of 260 ft⋅lbf (350 N⋅m) at 4,500 rpm. At the time, this was uncommon among Honda vehicles.
The K23A1 engine has all-aluminum construction, an i-VTEC head, and dual balance shafts. It was also one of the only four-cylinder powered luxury SUVs of its generation. Honda's variable flow turbocharger reduces turbo lag by using a valve to narrow the exhaust passage at low rpm, increasing the velocity of the exhaust flow and keeping the turbine spinning rapidly. At higher rpm, the valve opens to allow more exhaust flow for increased boost. The engine also features a top-mounted intercooler which receives air from the grille, channeled by ducting under the hood.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated fuel mileage is 19 mpg‑US (12 L/100 km; 23 mpg‑imp) city and 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway miles per gallon. An updated EPA mileage estimate in February 2007 rated the RDX at 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city and 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg‑imp) highway.

Common 2014 Acura Rdx problems
The Acura RDX, a luxury midsize SUV, is known for its reliable performance and affordable repair and maintenance costs. However, there are some common problems that owners of the 2014 model have reported.
One of the main issues is with the infotainment system, which can suddenly stop working, affecting the user-friendly features like Apple CarPlay. This problem can be frustrating for drivers who rely on their infotainment systems for navigation, entertainment, and connectivity.
Another issue reported by owners of the 2014 Acura RDX is related to the engine, specifically the V6 engine's cylinder-deactivation technology. Finally, the 2014 Acura RDX has some general customer complaints, including issues with the navigation system and fuel pump overheating. These problems can affect the overall driving experience and should be addressed by Acura to ensure customer satisfaction.
In conclusion, while the 2014 Acura RDX is a reliable and affordable luxury midsize SUV, it has some common problems that owners should be aware of. These issues include infotainment failure, engine cylinder-deactivation technology, airbag recalls, maintenance costs, and general customer complaints. By addressing these issues promptly and working with Acura to find solutions, drivers can ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- VIN: 5J8TB4H57EL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Driving at night the headlights are dim and it's difficult to see. I have read online this is a very common issue with this make and model. Bulb replacement did not fix the issue, the low beam lights are dangerously low. When it is difficult to see it makes driving dangerous. The dealership confirmed this is a common complaint amongst customers. It has not yet been inspected by the dealership, though they are familiar with the problem. There have not been any warnings or messages notifying that my lights are dim.

- VIN: 5J8TB4H3XEL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: These low beam headlights have been becoming dimmer and dimmer over the last couple of years. I have had it in for service and had bulbs replaced ... I requested LEDS but they said it could not be done. From online forums I understand there may be a delaminating problem inside the light unit as a result of heat from the bulb ... or perhaps damage to bulb housing for the same reason. I CANNOT drive this car safely at night any longer. BOTH headlight low beams are equally affected so it is not damage on my part. The only remedy is replacing the entire headlight unit on both sides which I have been quoted as around $2000K. I am not the only one with this issue. The following comment is from [XXX] Good afternoon, I'm new to the forum. I'm having issues with my 2014 Acura headlights. I've replaced the bulb 4 TIMES since December 2019. I took the car to the dealership and had them replaced, had the electrical and wiring checked to figure out why my lights are always super dim, actually dangerously dim. They found no issue. I know there was a recall on this issue, but my vehicle wasn't part of the recall." This from Consumer Affairs Oct 2022 online article titled: "Recalls to fix headlight issues go back at least a decade" "Consumer Affairs researchers have found instances of a number of Acura owners reporting their Acura RDX vehicles’ headlights were extremely dim, to the point where they cannot see the road and where drivers have even described the vehicles as “undrivable” at nighttime." I believe this chronic issue needs to be addressed and remedied by Acura. If you research further you will find other examples. Thank you. (Edit: It appears from the same article that Acura RLX had the same problem and a recall on it. "In 2014 Acura recalled approximately 9,700 model-year 2014-2015 RLX vehicles in the United States to replace both headlight assemblies.") - Summary: Low beam headlights have become very dim. By not adequately lighting the road ahead, a dangerous condition is being created for the driver. High beam headlights must be used to provide adequate lighting but must be switched to low beam to avoid blinding oncoming vehicle drivers. Acura is aware of the faulty manufacturing of the low beam headlight units but refuses to issue a recall on the RDX model and the dealer charges over $3000 for replacement.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05

It is not safe to drive at night with the headlights not working as designed. The Acura dealership inspected my vehicle and indicates that this is a common problem with the 2014 Acura RDX headlights and the only solution is to replace them.

They have progressively worsened to the point that it is difficult to discern they are functioning at all unless you get out and view them from the front at night. I literally can read better by candle light than I can with my low beams on. Super dangerous at night and I have to use high beams continually.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-17
- VIN: 5J8TB3H3XEL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Headlights are dangerously dim, to the extent that it is not safebto drive at night. Visibility is likened to only having the orange running lights on. May see a depth of 3ft ahead, while practically no visibility in adverse conditions, such as rain, fog or snow. I have replaced the bulbs several times, as well as the housings and fuses. All appear to be in working condition an the headlight covers do not have any condensation or wear that would obscure light emitting. I have had several mechanics look at this from 3 Acura dealers and one independent Japanese import mechanic. No failures were found, however, all agreed that this was a critical safety concern. This issue was present since 2016 when I purchased the car and has become completely unsafe to drive at night since 2018, at around 60k miles. No fix appears to be available, except an almost $3k full replacement, which i find insulting and egregious. I've only owned Acura/Honda and have never experienced such willful ignorance concerning safety. Does someone have to die for this to be recalled?
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
- VIN: 5J8TB3H54EL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The low-beam headlights are so dim that when I drive at night I cannot see the road in front of me. When there is a passenger in my car at night, they tell me to turn on my headlights when they are already on. When I take my vehicle in for scheduled maintenance (at the dealership) I keep asking about the lights, and they keep saying that the lights are working properly, they are clean, and they are aimed properly; "that's just how they are." I asked about replacing them and they say that it would cost me thousands of dollars to do it. For nighttime driving I've resorted to turning on my foglamps along with my headlights, and turning on my high-beams whenever there are no vehicles coming toward me. I am not able to see the road at night or in storms well enough to feel safe.

- Summary: I purchased this vehicle in October 2023, it was sold to me is as a certified vehicle. The issue came to my attention when I drove out the first night after the purchase. I took the car back to the dealer. Turns out the service department is aware of the issue and recommended a stereo installation shop. I went to headlight business, collision repair company, stereo shop, a total of six different outlets. I went back to the dealer and said they can’t help me. They sold me a lemon and they refuse to stand behind the fact that it was certified. They knowingly sold me a car that can only driven during the day.

- VIN: 5J8TB4H36EL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Low beam headlights have gradually dimmed over time to the point that they provide minimal lighting to the roadway and often appear to oncoming drivers as only daytime running lights (they often flash their headlights at me to tell me to turn mine are, except they already are on). This is a widely occurring issue with 2013-2015 RDXs as evidenced by many numerous consumer statements publicly viewable online. This is a widespread safety issue requiring investigation and remediation from the manufacturer
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-21
- VIN: 5J8TB3H3XEL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The low beam headlights are too dim to drive at night safely. They are available for inspection. My safety and the safety of others is in extreme danger when driving at night because I can’t see unless I turn on the high beams. The problem is known and recalls were issues for some models. The components have not been inspected but it’s obvious.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-16
- VIN: 5J8TB4H37EL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Low beams have been getting progressively worse since late 2023 to the point where the low beams are as bright as my day running lights. Driving at night has become very dangerous and I need to continually turn on and off high beams to see roadway at night. This seems to be a common problem in 2013-2015 RDX cars. There was a recall for Acura headlights in a different Acura model many years ago. It seems the RDX model in the 2013-15 years should be covered as well.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
- VIN: 5J8TB3H35EL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Low beams have become way too dim. I replaced the bulbs, but it made only a minor improvement. I also cleaned the outer surface so it's not hazy anymore.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
- VIN: 5J8TB3H34EL
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Our low beam headlights have been very low for a few months now. I have tried to replace the bulbs, using multiple different types / various degrees of halogen light bulbs, but each time this does not solve the low output problem. Now our car is failing our yearly state safety inspection and after research it appears the reflector inside the housing unit may need change. The lights are very dim and are becoming hard to drive without using high beams.

I've been driving my Acura RDX for three weeks now and I'm still very happy with my choice. When I was shopping for a new car, I had narrowed my options down to three brands and ended up at the Acura sales floor in Tustin, California. I have to admit, I usually find car shopping to be about as enjoyable as a root canal, but my experience at Acura was surprisingly pleasant. Kevin, the salesman who helped me, was extremely knowledgeable about the product and was able to explain all of the car's features in a way that was easy to understand. He didn't pressure me into making a decision and allowed the car to speak for itself. In the weeks following my purchase, I had a few questions about some of the car's technological features and Kevin was always available to help. Overall, I'm very happy with my experience at Acura and would highly recommend them to anyone in the market for a new car.

I was looking for a compact car for my small family, as I prefer it to driving a larger SUV. I traded in my two-year-old TSX, which I loved, to buy the RDX so we would have more rear leg room and cargo space. I like the simplicity of buying an Acura -- you can get it with or without bells and whistles, no nonsense. It's good value for the money and has all the goodies I wanted at the time, like heated seats and XM radio. This car has pretty decent gas mileage since it doesn't have a turbocharged engine, which is great for my daily commute that involves a combination of city and country road driving. I usually hit the mid 20's most tanks. Although there is a bit more road noise than I remember with my TSX, I still feel that the rear legroom is better than that of other cars in this size class, and installing the car seat with LATCH is a snap. If you have another kid or a large dog, you might want to consider something larger as we fill up the cargo area pretty quickly! However, the car has been extremely reliable with no visits to service other than regularly scheduled ones.

It's been a year since we got our RDX and we've put 17000 miles on it. The RDX boasts a stylish exterior and a very comfortable driving position. The base model comes with a long list of standard equipment, including Bluetooth, XM, backup camera, heated leather seats, and a sunroof - options that are only available in packages on most competitors. As soon as you get in, the seat and mirrors adjust to your settings. When you pull out, the strong engine and smooth, fast transmission make you feel confident in any traffic situation. The brakes are fully capable. We've been averaging about 23 MPG in mixed driving. The cylinder deactivation takes a little getting used to, but it helps with efficiency. The interior features are logically laid out and work flawlessly. Overall, it was a very good purchase.

I bought this car for my wife, who used to own a 2011 RDX. While the 2011 model had a choppy ride, it was a great handler. However, this new model is very different. It's much smoother and has a more refined feel. The interior also seems a little roomier. So far, my wife is absolutely loving it. This is actually our 6th Acura, and even though I shopped around and considered other options, I concluded that this is the best mid-size SUV for $40,000 out there.

Believe it or not, I found that the 2014 RDX rides and drives better than my Porsche. I recently downsized and traded in my car for a 2014 RDX with Tech package and received a check for over $15k. Sometimes, things are just a name and status symbol...

The transmission was slipping badly, so we had it towed to the dealer despite the car only having 700 miles. I chose Acura for its quality, and I expect nothing less. However, this lack of quality has left me considering selling my Acura.
Granville Schmidt 2024-10-09
The RDX replaced my 2011 Q5. I chose it over the Q5 because it had more standard features and was $5000 less expensive. While it is a good car in many respects, the suspension, interior quality, and road noise reduction are not up to par with what you would expect from a luxury class SUV. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the vehicle, including having to replace the rear struts twice and fix a drive train vibration. Additionally, I had to replace the brakes and rotors at 24K miles at my own expense, as Acura stated that brakes were not covered by warranty, despite the relatively low mileage.
Jaleel Little 2024-09-14
I have had my 2014 RDX for just over a month. The car has a constant vibration, hesitant transmission, and rear shocks that had to be replaced due to a clunking noise. However, I believe that these issues are not representative of the Acura RDX as a whole. I would recommend that potential buyers thoroughly research the car and take it for a test drive before making a decision.

The rdx is a great car, but it falls short in some areas. It has a few design flaws, weak A/C, and a poor interface to the iPhone. Additionally, it lacks many key features/options of a luxury SUV, such as parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. To add insult to injury, many features that should be standard are only available on the tech model, such as fog lamps and power lift gate. Despite these shortcomings, the rdx has great potential.

I recently purchased a 2014 RDX with the Technology package. The build quality and power are impressive. However, I was disappointed with the technology of the vehicle, even after purchasing the technology package. The GPS is outdated and difficult to use. It would be great if Acura could update it to be more user-friendly. Additionally, it would be helpful if the steering wheel controls could activate Siri. While you can upload your songs to the hard drive, it can be difficult to select specific songs or artists. Overall, I think there is room for improvement in the technology department. Thank you for considering my feedback.
