2013 Audi A5 problems

audi logo

The Audi A5 is a series of compact executive coupé cars produced by the German automobile manufacturer Audi since June 2007. The A5 range additionally comprises the coupe, cabriolet, and "Sportback" (a five-door liftback with a fastback roofline) version of the Audi A4 saloon and estate models.

Under Audi's internal platform numbering convention, the A5 is a member of the B-platform series of vehicles, sharing its platform designation with the A4 saloon and Avant. The first generation A5 (Type 8T) is therefore a member of the B8 family, whilst the second generation model (Type 8W6) is based on the B9. Both are derived from the Volkswagen MLB (Modular Longitudinal Matrix) architecture.

First generation (2007)

Initial release

When presented at the March 2007 Geneva Motor Show, the A5 marked Audi's return to the compact executive coupé market since the (B3/B4) Audi 80 based coupé model ended production in 1996. On May 10, 2006, Audi confirmed that the A5 would go into production. The B6/B7 A4 spawned a convertible variant but not a coupé. For the fourth-generation A4 (B8), Audi decided to spin off the cabriolet, along with a new coupé and 4-door fastback sedan, into a nameplate of its own as the A5.

The A5 was the first of the B8 family of vehicles to be released (the others being the A4 and the Q5 crossover SUV), all based on the Audi MLP platform (Modular Longitudinal Platform) which underpin the next generation A6 and A8.

The A5 is the third coupé in Audi's line up, following the second generation TT and the R8. The A5 adopted design elements of the Nuvolari quattro concept car. The A5 debuted with the 3.2 litre FSI V6 engine delivering 195 kW (265 PS; 261 hp).

Common 2013 Audi A5 problems

The Audi A5, a popular luxury vehicle, has been known to have several common problems across various model years. While not all A5s will experience these issues, it's essential to be aware of them before making a purchase. Here are some of the most frequently reported problems with the Audi A5, focusing on the 2013 model:

  • Multitronic gearbox problems: The earliest Audi A5 models, particularly those produced between 2007 and 2016, have had more reported instances of Multitronic gearbox problems. These include transmission failure, power loss or immobility, shuddering, jerking, and unusual noises during acceleration or cruising. Overheating is another problem, particularly during demanding driving conditions or towing heavy loads.
  • Airbags: Audi recalled 208,332 cars due to concerns that a seat heater cable problem could disable the front passenger airbag. This affected the 2018-2020 A5 Cabriolet, A5 Coupe and A5 Sportback, along with other Audi models.
  • Timing chain problems: All Audi A5 engines, petrol and diesel, have timing chains rather than belts. Timing chains are designed to be more durable than timing belts. However, they are in constant contact with other moving parts and can stretch over time if there is too much tension, resulting in misfires during motion if the pistons and valves are out of place. Replacing timing chains can also be more costly than replacing timing belts because they’re a complex component inside the engine.
  • Increased oil consumption: Turbocharged engines tend to consume oil faster due to their higher operating temperatures. The early versions of the TFSI petrol engines found in the A5, A4, and Q5 have a piston ring design flaw that contributes to excessive oil consumption. The piston rings allow small amounts of oil to leak into the cylinders where it burns, increasing oil consumption.
  • Interior trim noises: Owners of the Audi A5 have reported experiencing a range of interior trim noises, such as rattling or creaking sounds from the dashboard, door panels, or centre console. If you’re experiencing interior trim noise problems with your Audi A5, having a qualified mechanic inspect these areas is a good idea.
  • Clutch issues: Some Audi A5 owners have reported clutch problems, such as a stiff or difficult-to-press clutch pedal and instances of clutch slippage or complete failure. If you are experiencing clutch-related issues with your Audi A5, have it inspected and repaired by a mechanic.
  • Coolant pump failure: There have been reports of coolant pump issues in Audi A5 vehicles. Owners have noted instances where the coolant pump fails prematurely, leading to engine overheating. However, this problem isn’t associated with any specific Audi A5 models.
  • Water pump failure: Premature water pump failure has been reported by some Audi A5 owners, leading to engine overheating.

The 2013 Audi A5 has 38 problems and defects reported by A5 owners, with the worst complaints being engine, lights, and steering problems. It's crucial to note that these issues may not affect every 2013 Audi A5, but it's essential to be aware of them before making a purchase.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: WAURFAFR1DA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was having an issue with my 2013 Audi A5 starting. A call to roadside assistance was able to jump my battery and the car would start and run. However, the same issue kept happening. The EPC warning light would come on and it took a few weeks to get scheduled with a mechanic. I purchased a mobile jump starter myself because I never knew when the car would or wouldn't start. After taking the car to Audi, they found the "transmission coolant valve failing internally causing coolant to migrate up connector - this is causing a short which is draining the battery. If not fixed it will continue to deplete the batter. Recommend replacing valve and and connector". [2023 Audi Inspection Report.pdf] This was verified by another mechanic who did the work and shared the faulty, corroded transmission pump connector and leaking valve. [photo: 2023 Corroded connector Transmission Coolant Valve.jpg; 2023 Transmission Coolant Valuve and connector.jpg] I won't speculate about the potential outcomes of such a failure, but I was told by my mechanic before I brought it in that I should no longer jump the car, because if what Audi found was correct, I could at minimum cause a full failure of the car's electrical system or a fire could start and recommended that I tow the car in for repair, which is what I did. An internet search shows this isn't a unique or isolated issue. Audi owners over the past 7+ years have been experiencing the same issue with the transmission coolant seeping into electrical components, causing shorts and electrical problems like mine. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] This pump and its proximity to electrical components is a dangerous risk to drivers not aware that what appears as a simple dead battery, could in fact be one jump start away from disaster. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-21
  • VIN: WAULFAFR1DA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have experienced several failures and 3 recalls with my vehicle since I purchased it brand new. I have paid out thousands of dollars over the years for repairs that I feel were faulty being that I am on the only owner of the vehicle. I have approximately a little under 75k miles on my vehicle although I purchased in 2012 (2013 vehicle) only to take it to dealerships and pay for this and that but most recently my major complaint is my car has stopped on me 4 times and I paid originally for what the dealership stated was the problem only to take it back 3 times and now they state the FUEL PUMP is the problem and there is no recalls. Audi is known to have recalls on FUEL PUMPs but at this time do not reflect on my vehicle. However, my car has not been in an accident, I am the only owner, the mileage is under 100k and there is no explanation as to why the fuel pump needs replacing. Please look into this. Thank you.

  • VIN: WAUCFAFR3DA
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact's cousin owns a 2013 Audi A5. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle began to overheat. The warning message "Pull Over and Check Coolant" was displayed. The contact veered to the side of the road and upon checking the coolant reservoir, the contact noticed that the coolant was leaking. The contact added coolant and was able to continue driving. However, the failure reoccurred increasingly. The contact stated that the coolant would leak onto the ground while refilling the coolant reservoir. The contact stated that the vehicle was no longer drivable. The contact became aware that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V229000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall repair. However, as the contact's friend was picking up the vehicle on his behalf, he noticed that there was no coolant in the vehicle. The dealer then added coolant however, the failure recurred while driving. The dealer was notified and advised the contact that the failure was not associated with the recall. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic where the coolant pump sensor was replaced; however, the failure recurred a month later. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as the dealer had already marked the recall as completed. Additionally, the contact stated that the interior lights of the vehicle would fail to operate intermittently. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-20
  • VIN: WAUCFAFHXDN
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: About 3 weeks ago I noticed the beginning of a steering problem. I first noticed that the wheel seemed to require more than normal force to turn, especially in about the 10 and 2 o’clock position. It would behave pretty normally most of the time, but then, unpredictably, this would happen. Now it seems to be pretty constant. The steering wheel now requires much more force than usual, but only when in certain positions. Otherwise, everything appears normal. A couple of days ago I needed to try an evasive maneuver, which required sudden, hard steering. However, the response of the car was not what I expected under similar conditions with other Audi’s I own. This is an obvious safety concern. There appears to be a repair bulletin by Audi, but only Audis that are still under warranty will be fixed for free by Audi. I strongly believe this is a serious safety issue that deserves a safety recall of all affected Audi’s, and repair at Audi expense.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-26
  • VIN: WAURFAFRXDA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING. I WAS DRIVING AND THE CAR LOST POWER AND STARTED SHUDDERING, EPC WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND IT SEEMED LIKE IT MIGHT STALL. SINCE I WAS DRIVING I PUSHED IN THE CLUTCH AND COASTED TO A STOP. I SHUT IT OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND IT WORKED NORMALLY SO I DROVE HOME. I DROVE IT THE NEXT DAY AND HAD NO PROBLEMS. ON A FOLLOWING DAY IT DID THE SAME THING, LOSS OF POWER, SHAKING, NOT WORKING RIGHT. SOMETIMES IT SEEMED JUST FINE OTHER TIMES IT HAD PROBLEMS. I TOOK IT TO A SHOP TO HAVE DIAGNOSIS AND THEY DISCOVERED WATER IN THE ENGINE COMPUTER CONNECTOR AND TRACED IT TO A COOLING VALVE LEAK THAT ALLOWS WATER IN THE CONNECTOR AT THE VALVE TO ENTER THE 2 WIRE CONNECTOR AND APPARENTLY THE WATER WICKS UP THE CONTROL WIRE TO THE COMPUTER CONNECTOR AND SHORTS OUT CONNECTIONS TO COILS AND OTHER ENGINE ELECTRONICS. I SEARCHED THE WEB FOR INFORMATION AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THAT HAS AFFECTED 2010 - 2013 AUDI A8 AND THE CAR WAS RECALLED. SEE 16V619000. I'M WONDERING WHY MY 2013 A5 THAT HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WAS NOT RECALLED. I HAVE PICTURE OF THE ENGINE COMPUTER SHOWING WATER THAT WAS IN THE CONNECTOR AND PIN 35 IS GREEN. THE 2 WIRE CONNECTOR WAS REMOVED FROM THE VALVE AND HAS ISSUES, IT IS CONNECTED TO PIN 35 OF THE ECM

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-05
  • VIN: WAULFAFR9DA
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE SUFFERED COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE AT 52,000 MILES. ON MAY 05'19 THE CAR WAS RUNNING SMOOTHLY AT PREVAILING HIGHWAY SPEED WHEN I STARTED TO HEAR THE SOUND OF MARBLES RATTLING AROUND IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. PULLED OVER, AND THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOWED TO AUDI BURLINGTON, AND THE $159 DIAGNOSTIC THE FOLLOWING MORNING MAY 06'19 RESULTED IN A VOICE MAIL THAT SAID IN PART "CAR ENGINE IS BLOWN, THE COST WILL BE $11,000, PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT YOU'D LIKE TO DO". THEY ALSO SUGGESTED I COULD TRY TO GET AUDI OF AMERICA TO ASSIST SO I OPENED A TICKET WITH THEM ON MAY 07'19 (REFERENCE NUMBER IS 190452228). THE SERVICE HISTORY IS INTACT BUT NEITHER AUDI OF AMERICA NOR AUDI BURLINGTON (MA) DEALERSHIP WILL ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR. INSTEAD, BOTH AOA AND THE DEALER HAVE CHOSEN TO DEMONIZE THE SERVICE HISTORY BECAUSE THE PRIOR OWNER MAY HAVE MISSED A REQUIRED ANNUAL VISIT AND BECAUSE THE 35K SERVICE WAS NOT DONE AT THEIR DEALERSHIP. WHEN I ASK WHAT SERVICE ELEMENT WOULD HAVE IDENTIFIED AND PREVENTED A BLOWN ENGINE AT 52,000 MILES, THE SERVICE MANAGER AT AUDI BURLINGTON RESPONDED WITH "A MILLION THINGS COULD GO WRONG IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE RECOMMENDED SERVICE". BY THE WAY, A PERFECT SERVICE HISTORY WOULD BE NO GUARANTEE OF ASSISTANCE AS I LEARNED TEN YEARS AGO WHEN MY AUDI TT BLEW UP - I HAD TO WAIT 5 YEARS FOR THE CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT TO PAY FOR THAT REPAIR. IT'S BEEN THREE WEEKS AND I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE A CALLBACK FROM AUDI ON THE CASE I OPENED WITH THEM BACK ON MAY 05'19. THE DEALER IS HOUNDING ME TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO BECAUSE MY CAR IS TAKING UP PRECIOUS SPACE ON HIS PROPERTY.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-17
  • VIN: WAUCFAFR7DA
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I JUST HAD MY FUEL DOOR ACTUATOR REPLACED ON MY 2013 AUDI A5 WITH LESS THAN 44,500 MILES ON IT IN SEPTEMBER 2018. I AM HAVING A VERY DIFFICULT TIME UNDERSTANDING WHY MY FUEL DOOR ACTUATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACE WITH SO LOW MILEAGE. THE CAR HAS A RANGE OF 455 MILES AFTER A FILL UP THE PART COST $405.85 INCLUDING A SHIPPING CHARGE. THIS MEANS IT COST ME $4.17 TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE LID AFTER A FILL UP. MY ARGUMENT IS THAT THE PART WAS DEFECTIVE AND IT SHOULD BE REPLACED FOR FREE. I SENT THE PART BACK TO AUDI FOR REVIEW. AUDI DECLINE TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBLITY FOR THE DEFECTIVE PART. HOWEVER, I AM NOT FINISH WITH THIS CASE. I SENT AND EMAIL TO THE CEO OF VOLKSWAGEN IN NORTH AMERICA AND GERMANY IN REGARD TO THIS ISSUE. I AM WAITING FOR A REPLY I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR CAR OVER THIS ISSUE. IN ADDICTION, MY CAR HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR WATER PUMP ISSUES AS WELL. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE WATER PUMP THREE TIMES. THE CAR IS BEING RECALLED AGAIN IN REGARD TO THE WATER PUMP. THE WORK TO REPAIR IT REQUIRES IT TO BE DONE IN TWO STAGES. THIS MEANS FIVE WATER PUMP ISSUES. WHEN DOES A RECALL BECOME EXCESSIVE OVER THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS NONSENSE!

  • Summary: IN SEP 2016 MY 2013 AUDI A5 STARTED SMOKING AND OVERHEATING WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. I DROVE MY CAR HOME AND SEARCHED FOR A REPUTABLE AUTO SHOP IN MY CITY THAT I DROVE MY CAR TO. MY VEHICLE WAS ANALYZED AND INSPECTED TO FIND OUT THAT THE COOLANT/WATERPUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, WHICH MY CAR WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. AT THIS MOMENT I JUST LEFT MY CAR AT THIS AUTO REPAIR SHOP AS IT WAS MY ONLY VEHICLE AND NEEDED REPAIRED ASAP. WITHIN THE LAST YEAR AND VERY RECENTLY THEIR HAVE BEEN MANY RECALLS RELATIVE TO OVERHEATING COOLANT/WATER PUMP ISSUES CAUSING OVERHEATING AND POSSIBLY SET ON FIRE. I HAD IT REPAIRED AT THE AUTO SHOP, WHICH COSTED ME NEARLY $1200! I FOUND THIS ABSURD AS MY VEHICLE WAS ONLY 3.5 YEARS OLD WITH AN OVERHEATING PROBLEM. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN GET THIS RESEARCHED AND REIMBURSED BY THE MANUFACTURE AS MY ISSUE HAPPENED PRIOR TO RECALLS WERE PUBLISHED? I HAVE ATTACHED A REPAIR INVOICE FOR YOUR REVIEW. THANK YOU.

Negative 2013 Audi A5 car reviews

I regret my purchase of the Audi due to poor design, quality, and driving experience. The car's only redeeming quality is its stylish appearance. The turbo lag and engagement make driving in stop-and-go traffic miserable, and the brakes lack the confidence of a BMW. The interior feels cheap and is overloaded with plastic. The iPod cable is inconveniently located in the passenger glove box and the sound system's bass rattles every plastic piece. Wind noise is high on the freeway and the seats are uncomfortable. As someone who has owned BMW, Lexus, Jaguar, and Cadillac, I can confidently say that this will be my last Audi. After 8 months of ownership, I was fortunate enough to trade it in for a Cadillac Escalade, which I am much happier with. Although the Audi has a sharp exterior, it is an overall awful car.

Looks great! It's definitely fun to drive when at speed. However, I did notice that it can be a bit slow to take off from a stop. There seems to be virtually no response to the accelerator, and sometimes it even shutters. Personally, I felt safer merging into tight traffic in my 2002 turbo diesel beetle. Additionally, I found that the doors are quite heavy, and when you throw them open to exit, they always seem to close on you. The dealer mentioned that the acceleration is normal for the cvt transmission. Overall, it's a great car, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

I drove Porsches for 9 years, but this summer I got my Audi. Unfortunately, the radio only works when it wants to, and of course, the service department says there's nothing wrong since it was working when I brought it in. To make matters worse, the leather in the passenger seat has split, and the service department claims it was punctured with a knife. However, I know for a fact that I never stabbed my seat. Needless to say, I am very dissatisfied.

The timing chain issue in my car is a well-known problem that even led to a class action suit against VW. Despite the fact that my car unfortunately experienced this problem just after the 100K limit, I am confident in my decision not to repair it. The car was great before the issue, with a stylish design and impressive power for a 4 cyl turbo. However, I believe that no car, especially a luxury one, should just die like that. I am confident in my decision not to invest in a costly repair that may not even guarantee a long-term solution.

I purchased my Audi brand new in 2011 and owned it for nearly 4 years. Unfortunately, my car burned oil due to bad parts used by Audi, which resulted in a class action lawsuit. Dealing with warranty issues was always a bit of a hassle. Additionally, the programming could be a bit annoying at times. For example, if you set your lights to auto and open the door to grab the mail with the engine on, you will hear a warning tone. The radio presets also had to be selected every time instead of staying in memory. It was also frustrating that only Audi could turn off the service light, not independent garages. Lastly, the passenger seatbelt warning tone would sound every 60 seconds, which was unnecessary. I eventually traded my Audi for a BMW and I am very happy with my decision.

I am extremely satisfied with Audi's performance and look. I have visited the dealer a few times after my purchase and have found them to be as courteous and friendly as they were on the day of purchase.

I ordered my Audi A5 Cabriolet in May 2010 and it was one of the first '11 models off the truck. I traded in my '07 A4 Cab for this one and I must say, I'm very impressed with the quality and the upgrades made to the '11 model compared to the '10. For instance, the Premium Plus package now includes an auto-dimming mirror which was not available in the '10 model. Additionally, the radio presets now display the name and artist without having to go back to the main menu. The A5 is larger, roomier and quieter than the A4. I chose the Teak Brown with Cardamon interior which is a new combination for '11 and it looks stunning! Although it is a bit pricey at $51k, it is still less expensive than a comparably equipped BMW Cabriolet. The MPG is equal to the sticker estimates even with under 100 miles! Overall, I think it's a great car.

  5. Reinhold Hansen 2024-09-04

The overall design and appearance of the vehicle is great! This vehicle is definitely easy on the eye... The braking going downhill is a little shaking but on the flag service it's great. To have a 2 engine the accelerating is unexpected, unexpectedly great. Also the food fuel economy is an added bonus. I haven't had the vehicle long enough to determine cost of Maintenance etc etc but for peace of mind I purchased an extended warranty
