2014 Audi A5 problems

audi logo

The Audi A5 is a series of compact executive coupé cars produced by the German automobile manufacturer Audi since June 2007. The A5 range additionally comprises the coupe, cabriolet, and "Sportback" (a five-door liftback with a fastback roofline) version of the Audi A4 saloon and estate models.

Under Audi's internal platform numbering convention, the A5 is a member of the B-platform series of vehicles, sharing its platform designation with the A4 saloon and Avant. The first generation A5 (Type 8T) is therefore a member of the B8 family, whilst the second generation model (Type 8W6) is based on the B9. Both are derived from the Volkswagen MLB (Modular Longitudinal Matrix) architecture.

First generation (2007)

Initial release

When presented at the March 2007 Geneva Motor Show, the A5 marked Audi's return to the compact executive coupé market since the (B3/B4) Audi 80 based coupé model ended production in 1996. On May 10, 2006, Audi confirmed that the A5 would go into production. The B6/B7 A4 spawned a convertible variant but not a coupé. For the fourth-generation A4 (B8), Audi decided to spin off the cabriolet, along with a new coupé and 4-door fastback sedan, into a nameplate of its own as the A5.

The A5 was the first of the B8 family of vehicles to be released (the others being the A4 and the Q5 crossover SUV), all based on the Audi MLP platform (Modular Longitudinal Platform) which underpin the next generation A6 and A8.

The A5 is the third coupé in Audi's line up, following the second generation TT and the R8. The A5 adopted design elements of the Nuvolari quattro concept car. The A5 debuted with the 3.2 litre FSI V6 engine delivering 195 kW (265 PS; 261 hp).

Common 2014 Audi A5 problems

The Audi A5, produced from 2007 to 2016, is a popular choice among car buyers due to its attractive design and efficient engines:

  • Fuel cap: The fuel filler flap mechanism can fail, making it difficult to open the fuel cap. There is an override behind the boot trim to open the flap, but this is not an ideal solution.
  • Wheel bearings: Wheel bearings are a weak spot, especially the fronts, so listening for groaning when cornering is essential. Replacing worn-out bearings can be costly, so it's crucial to address this issue promptly.
  • Doors: The door locks can fail, and replacement is the only cure. It's essential to ensure the door locks work properly before purchasing a used Audi A5.
  • Recalls: The Audi A5 has been recalled five times, with issues ranging from brake servo problems, fuel leaks, and airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners to coolant pump overheating and air-con overheating. Some models were also included in the VW diesel emissions scandal.
  • In-car electronics: The infotainment system, rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, and head-up display can cause issues. Sound can be garbled, and some features may not work, requiring upgrades or repairs.

In conclusion, while the Audi A5 is an attractive and efficient vehicle, it has its share of common problems, primarily related to electrical glitches, windows regulators, fuel cap, wheel bearings, doors, and recalls. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and ensure that the car they are considering has been adequately maintained and serviced.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-14
  • VIN: WAULFAFR6EA
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Audi claims to have fixed their 2.0t engine piston defect which can cause safety issues and accidents caused by the car seizing or loosing power at any time due to their faulty pistons which class action act filed on 2014 indicates that 2012-2017 2.0t engine are susceptible to the same default. The company tried to hide this and failed to fix the issues on vehicles pass 2011. Please I have kids and this is our main vehicle I am being told by the dealer that I need a new piston rings based on the same issues they have encountered but is not eligible for that recall. There are law suit filed against this this a safety hazard for anyone in the road and Audi offers no assistance other than requiring more money for tests that ultimately will lead to what he say was needing a new piston.

  • VIN: WAULFAFH6EN
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY IN EXTENDED STOP AND GO TRAFFIC ON VERY HOT DAYS (IN THE 90'S). AFTER COOLING DOWN FOR AN EXTENDED TIME (1/2 HOUR OR MORE), THE CAR STARTED AGAIN AND ACTED NORMAL. IT HAPPENED LAST LABOR DAY (2018 AND YESTERDAY (6/28/19). ONCE THE ENGINE STOPPED I COULD NOT RESTART THE CAR UNTIL IT COOLED DOWN. I WAS STUCK ON THE HIGHWAY UNTIL I COULD MOVE THE CAR TO SIDE OF THE ROAD BY PUTTING IT INTO NEUTRAL. THESE ARE THE ONLY TWO TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE I ACQUIRED THE CAR ON 3/15/14. I BELIEVE IT IS SOMEHOW RELATED TO THE CAR OVERHEATING AND SHUTTING ITSELF DOWN TO PROTECT THE ENGINE FROM DAMAGE. COULD THIS BE RELATED TO THE SAFETY RECALL 19N4 -ELECTRIC (AFTER RUN) COOLANT PUMP (NHTSA 18V229)?

  • Summary: AUDI OF SEATTLE CONFIRMED 1/22/2018 THAT MY CAR IS FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED, BUT I BELIEVE THIS DESIGN IS UNSAFE AND UNDESIRABLE. SPECIFICALLY, WHEN DRIVING IN REVERSE USING THE BACKUP CAMERA VIEW, IF I RECEIVE AN INCOMING CELL PHONE CALL TO MY PAIRED PHONE, THE CAR PRIORITIZES THE TELEPHONE SCREEN VIEW OVER THE BACKUP CAMERA SCREEN VIEW, WHICH IMMEDIATELY DISAPPEARS. BACKING UP IS OF COURSE A TIME WHEN THE DRIVER'S ARMS AND HANDS ARE NOT WELL POSITIONED TO POKE THE "IGNORE" BUTTON ON THE PHONE SCREEN.

TRANSMISSION COULD BE SHIFTED MANUALLY INTO 7TH AND 8TH GEARS, BUT ENGINE WAS LUGGING ON LEVEL HIGHWAY AT 60MPH. AUDI SERVICE CENTER STATES THE HYDRAULIC TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER HAS FAILED, CAUSING ENGINE TIMING ISSUES THAT COULD RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC FAILURE IF DRIVEN FURTHER. THE CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 87K MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED SINCE PURCHASED NEW. THERE ARE NUMEROUS INTERNET SITES DETAILING AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH VW / AUDI ENGINE PROBLEMS RESULTING FROM THE HYDRAULIC TIMING CHAIN TENSION MECHANISMS. MANY CONSUMERS ARE REPORTING REPAIRS OF SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS. MY CONCERN (ASIDE FROM REPAIR COSTS FOR A KNOWN PROBLEM) IS WHAT HAPPENS TO AN ENGINE THAT HAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AT HIGH SPEEDS ON A BUSY INTERSTATE? IRONICALLY I HAD MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN 80C5-AUXILLARY HEATER. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT INTO THE AUDI SERVICE CENTER IN BLOOMINGTON INDIANA ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 2018, AT 9:45AM AND REPAIRS ARE NOT YET COMPLETE WITH NO ESTIMATED TIME FOR COMPLETION AS OF TUESDAY, JANUARY 9TH.

Negative 2014 Audi A5 car reviews

  1. Boris Collier 2024-10-13

I regret my purchase of the Audi due to poor design, quality, and driving experience. The car's only redeeming quality is its stylish appearance. The turbo lag and engagement make driving in stop-and-go traffic miserable, and the brakes lack the confidence of a BMW. The interior feels cheap and is overloaded with plastic. The iPod cable is inconveniently located in the passenger glove box and the sound system's bass rattles every plastic piece. Wind noise is high on the freeway and the seats are uncomfortable. As someone who has owned BMW, Lexus, Jaguar, and Cadillac, I can confidently say that this will be my last Audi. After 8 months of ownership, I was fortunate enough to trade it in for a Cadillac Escalade, which I am much happier with. Although the Audi has a sharp exterior, it is an overall awful car.

  2. Tyrel Effertz 2024-06-16

The timing chain issue in my car is a well-known problem that even led to a class action suit against VW. Despite the fact that my car unfortunately experienced this problem just after the 100K limit, I am confident in my decision not to repair it. The car was great before the issue, with a stylish design and impressive power for a 4 cyl turbo. However, I believe that no car, especially a luxury one, should just die like that. I am confident in my decision not to invest in a costly repair that may not even guarantee a long-term solution.

  3. Travis Medhurst 2024-06-01

I purchased my Audi brand new in 2011 and owned it for nearly 4 years. Unfortunately, my car burned oil due to bad parts used by Audi, which resulted in a class action lawsuit. Dealing with warranty issues was always a bit of a hassle. Additionally, the programming could be a bit annoying at times. For example, if you set your lights to auto and open the door to grab the mail with the engine on, you will hear a warning tone. The radio presets also had to be selected every time instead of staying in memory. It was also frustrating that only Audi could turn off the service light, not independent garages. Lastly, the passenger seatbelt warning tone would sound every 60 seconds, which was unnecessary. I eventually traded my Audi for a BMW and I am very happy with my decision.

  4. Alford Kling 2024-05-20

I strongly advise against purchasing a pre-owned car from this company, as my experience with their convertible top has been unsatisfactory. Despite the issue being clearly covered, CostGuard has refused to cover the costs, making it clear that their complete coverage is not worth the investment.

  5. Chandler Braun 2024-05-20

I drove Porsches for 9 years, but this summer I got my Audi. Unfortunately, the radio only works when it wants to, and of course, the service department says there's nothing wrong since it was working when I brought it in. To make matters worse, the leather in the passenger seat has split, and the service department claims it was punctured with a knife. However, I know for a fact that I never stabbed my seat. Needless to say, I am very dissatisfied.

Positive 2014 Audi A5 car reviews

  1. Finn Towne 2025-01-07

Performing at its peak requires high-quality testing. By choosing Michelin tires, the ride is made smoother and quieter. While the navigation may be difficult, you can always rely on Google. Although there are no USB ports, this car is not designed for gadgets and only has one cigarette lighter for charging. The MMI system does have a connection for an iPad in the glove box.

  2. Alex Collier 2025-01-04

It's great to hear that you're enjoying your A5! From the way you describe it, it sounds like a really fun car to drive. The handling sounds amazing, especially on those tight, windy roads. Even though it may not be the fastest car in a straight line, it's great to hear that the torque makes up for it. And of course, the beautiful lines and craftsmanship of the car are definitely something to admire. It's impressive that the interior still looks stunning even after 8 years, although it's understandable that the driver's side seat may show slight wear. Overall, it sounds like you have a great car that brings you a lot of joy!

  3. Cameron Bode 2025-01-03

This car is amazing! It has everything you could ever want in a grand touring sports coupe. You'll get looks everywhere you go. The car is super smooth and gets great gas mileage. The A5 is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever owned or ridden in. I highly recommend the sport package because the seats are that much better than the standard offerings. I'm looking forward to many years of bliss with this car.

  4. Wilfredo Larson 2024-11-14

I recently purchased a used 2013 car with 118k miles on it in April 2022. The previous owner had replaced the water pump, battery, pcv, tires and brakes in the 2 years they had it before I bought it. I have driven it for 10 months and put 8k miles on it without any issues. I have done some maintenance work on it, such as replacing the belt, coolant reservoir, oil change and gas cap gasket. Although I have been getting a CEL periodically, I think I just need a new gas cap. I really enjoy working on the EA8 engine and find it very easy to do so. I do need to replace the upper timing chain cover gasket because of a slight leak, but overall the car drives and looks like a much newer car. I plan on keeping it on the road for at least another 50k miles or so. The only downside is the timing chain cover, which is a known issue with this engine. Additionally, it does consume oil, but this is not a major issue for me as I have owned several Honda K series vtec engines that also consumed oil. UPDATE: I have now had the car for 16 months and it currently has 129K miles on it, but still no problems. During the hot SoCal summers, I run E85 and 91 during the winter as this is a flexfuel engine. At the end of this year, I will replace the plugs and coils, tires and brakes if needed.

I ordered my Audi A5 Cabriolet in May 2010 and it was one of the first '11 models off the truck. I traded in my '07 A4 Cab for this one and I must say, I'm very impressed with the quality and the upgrades made to the '11 model compared to the '10. For instance, the Premium Plus package now includes an auto-dimming mirror which was not available in the '10 model. Additionally, the radio presets now display the name and artist without having to go back to the main menu. The A5 is larger, roomier and quieter than the A4. I chose the Teak Brown with Cardamon interior which is a new combination for '11 and it looks stunning! Overall, it's a great car, although it is a bit pricey at $51k. However, it's still less expensive than a comparably equipped BMW Cabriolet. The MPG is equal to the sticker estimates even with under 100 miles!
