2016 Chevrolet Colorado problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Colorado (sharing mechanical commonality with the GMC Canyon), is a series of compact pickup trucks (mid-size since second generation) marketed by American automaker General Motors. They were introduced in 2004 to replace the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15/Sonoma compact pickups. The Colorado is named after the U.S. state of Colorado, while the Canyon would be the deep chasm between cliffs.

First generation (2004)

The Chevrolet Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon were jointly designed by GM's North American operations, GM's Brazil operations, and Isuzu, which began selling its own version worldwide in 2002. In late 2005, Isuzu offered a version in North America called the Isuzu i-series. This North American model Isuzu shared North American powertrains, styling, and equipment with the Colorado/Canyon twins and differed from Isuzu's worldwide offering. All Chevrolet, GMC, and Isuzu versions worldwide are based on the GMT355, itself the basis for the GMT 345-based Hummer H3. Most vehicles for markets outside North America are manufactured at a GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. All North American-market vehicles were manufactured by Shreveport Operations.

The cooperation between GM and Isuzu to build a light-duty truck and offer it in North America returns to an original arrangement the two companies had in the 1970s with the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu Faster.

Common 2016 Chevrolet Colorado problems

The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of. These issues include transmission problems, engine issues, and interior accessory issues.

Transmission problems are a significant concern for the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. Many owners have reported that their vehicles have trouble shifting properly between gears, which can lead to a rough ride and decreased performance. Additionally, some owners have experienced engine stalling, which can be dangerous if it occurs while driving.

Engine issues are another common problem for the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. Some owners have reported that their vehicles' engines stall intermittently, which can be caused by worn-out valve seats, faulty spark plugs, or vacuum leaks. This issue can be particularly prevalent in models from 2004-2009 and 2015.

Interior accessory issues are also a concern for the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. Some owners have reported problems with their vehicles' stereo systems, including issues with the entry-level stereo being basic and not providing the desired level of sound quality.

These problems are worse than other compact trucks from 2016, leading to higher repair costs as well. While the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado is cheaper than other compact trucks, the high repair costs make it a bad long-term value on the used truck market.

In summary, the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, including transmission issues, engine problems, and interior accessory issues. These problems can lead to higher repair costs and decreased performance, making it a less desirable option compared to other compact trucks from 2016.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-29
  • VIN: 1GCGTDE36G1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Transmission, yes How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I was going 55mph on an open highway and the transmission downshifted into 2nd gear throwing me forward and dropped me to 35mph with a line of cars behind. I could've been rear-ended, thrown off the road, or rolled if I had not immediately grabbed the shifter and put into manual and manually upshifted it back up. Besides the damages to the engine downshifting at that rate of speed to the wrong gear without notice or warning. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? no not a dealer but it has recreated itself a handful of times. This happens more often on downhill grades. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? yes, Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,SEATS
  • Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Water intrusion to the cab of the truck has structural failure in the roof causing it to leak inside the cab. Leak runs into dash and out of ignition causing electrical issues in the dash and ignition, along with pooling on the floorboards causing rusting; runs into the rear 3rd brake light and rear headliner causing electrical concerns to the rear brake light not alerting of braking and leaks into rear seats causing rusting under the seats where the seats can fall through the floorboards. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? rear brake light failure to alert surrounding drivers of braking. Possible electrocution in starting the vehicle with water in the ignition and dash; possible passenger/driver being dropped through the floorboards while driving. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? unknown Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? I have had it looked at by mechanics and told it was a body issue and needed to go to a body shop, not the dealership. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
  • VIN: 1GCGSCE33G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Recently started having issues with Power Steering going out along with stability control. It will happen at different speeds and turning radius. No warning that it's about to happen. I will have to pull over turn off the truck. Most often I have to open the driver side door before the alert will reset and I gain access to power steering again. On several occasions I have to repeat this process multiple times. In one case I had to remove the negative battery cable for 30 minutes before I could once again gain access to power steering.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-07
  • VIN: 1GCGTCE35G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: In the past two months, my 2016 Colorado with 79,000 miles has intermittently been losing power steering. It happens sporadically, in various speed and turning situations. It becomes very difficult to steer without the power assist. It happened while heading into a turn recently and has become more concerning. Shutting the truck off and restarting usually clears the problem (though not always). It can happen multiple times in a day and then not happen for more than a week. A diagnostic scanner showed code C0545

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-29
  • VIN: 1GCGTDE31G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Power steering failure occurred while driving. This makes the truck very hard to turn. A warning message appears in the info screen “power steering assist failure” when the power steering failure happens. The only fix is to stop the truck, turn off the truck, open the drivers door, close the drivers door, and then restart the truck. The first occurrence of this failure was in July 2024. It has happened many times since: at slow and high speed, wet and dry conditions, on bumpy roads and smooth pavement. There does not seem to be a specific condition which triggers this event. Today, the power steering went out right as I was turning right. This caused me to turn very wide and forced me into the opposing lane of traffic. Thankfully, this did not cause an accident, however, the potential for an accident due to this failure is very high. A similar issue has been identified in the 2015 model year of this truck and there is an open recall for that model year but not this one. I believe the included model year list should be extended to include the 2016 model year at minimum.

SINCE GM WOULDN'T EVEN HAVE KNOWN OF THIS PROBLEM WHEN 2016'S WERE BEING BUILT I THINK I'LL BE FIXING THE EXACT PROBLEM AND PARTTHAT GM FIXED IN THE RECALL ON THE 2015'S. THEY SHOULD AT LEAST NOTIFY 2016 OWNERS THAT THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE OF THIS HAPPENING.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-18
  • VIN: 1GCHTCE31G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: This is the secound occurance of this major safety issue occuring in my vehicle. Both times I was driving at highway speed and my steering lock up on me. The traction warning lights and message on my dash popped up, then my steering became very rigid. I can not remember exactly what the message said but it mentioned power steering, maybe it said "power steering" engaged...? This is a huge safety concern, I would not be able to make quick manuever or turn if necessary. I had to come to a complete stop on the side of the highway and turn vehicle on and off again, and it was fine the rest of the day. This is a known issue with other models of the Chevy Colorado, I am floored that it has not been recalled in this model. Does it take someone dying?

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-19
  • VIN: 1GCHTBE36G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that from idle to up to 55 MPH, the steering seized, and the power steering failure warning light illuminated. The vehicle became difficult to steer causing the contact to drive into the grass on a slight decline on the side of the road. The contact backed out of the grass and waited a while to regain proper power steering functionality. The contact stated that the power steering had failed a second time. The vehicle had been taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering had failed. The dealer replaced the wire from the battery to the alternator. The failure persisted and became more persistent. The failure occurred approximately 12 or more times within 3 days. The steering failure was self-corrected after being idling for a while however, the contact turned off the vehicle and then wait to restart it to regain proper power steering functionality at other times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 174,000.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
  • VIN: 1GCGSCE39G1
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On multiple occasions the warning to service Power Steering and Stabilitrak have popped up during driving causing a loss of power steering. Once I was taking a curve and it jerked the truck toward the right but I luckily had a good grip on the steering wheel to keep it on the road. Other occasions it occurs upon starting the vehicle in the morning or after sitting parked for several hours. When this occurs, it is very difficult to keep control of the vehicle when turning is concerned. I have brought it up with service technicians at the dealership but they cannot diagnose unless it is in the state of warning lights on and loss of power steering. The issue usually goes away when vehicle is turned off and restarted, though not always. This issue continues at haphazard intervals so it makes driving tense and unsafe as there is no telling when it will pop up. It is also causing an issue to get fixed because it cannot be replicated to get diagnosed properly. I have not been able to get any codes read for the issue as I am not near a facility when it occurs.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
  • VIN: 1GCHTCEA7G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The power steering cut off and on intermittently and occasionally making it very difficult to steer. This is the same problem that was recalled on 2015 models. The 2016 Colorado has the same parts as the 2015 and yet they will not recall I have been told at this is a two to $3000 repair my truck has 29,000 miles on it, and this should not be happening.

2024-08-20

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
  • VIN: 1GCGTCE38G1
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I purchased the truck used on 7/9/2021 with 55,967 miles on it. As of today, the mileage is 65,889. No problems with the steering had occurred until August 8, 2024. As I was pulling into a parking lot, I lost the power steering all of a sudden and had to struggle with the steering to get my truck into a parking space. I was fortunate there were very few cars in the immediate vicinity, or I might have hit one of them. The same thing happened on August 19, 2024 as I was approaching an intersection. I was able to continue going straight and then pull over into a parking lot. In both cases, I didn't notice any warning lights on my dash and there was no indication I was about to loose the power steering. Also, in both cases, after I turned off the engine and restarted it, the power steering was back. I have not yet been to a dealer or service facility to have the problem diagnosed nor has anyone inspected the steering mechanism. After doing an online search, it is my understanding this problem is the same as the one affecting the 2015 Colorado and Canyon, which is covered by a safety recall and the parts in the 2016 Colorado steering assembly are the same as those in the 2015 model. Had these two problems occurred at higher speeds when negotiating a tight radius turn, it would have resulted in loss of control and possible impact with other vehicles or structures off the roadway.

Negative 2016 Chevrolet Colorado car reviews

  1. Neal Schuppe 2024-10-24

I purchased this truck brand new in 2016. Although I enjoyed it when it was working, unfortunately, I experienced a range of issues with it over the course of three years. Every 3-4 months, the computer gave a reduced engine power error that limited my speed and required maintenance at the dealership. Despite this, the diesel version had good gas mileage and good tow capacity for its size. However, I had to change out the diesel tank, entire diesel exhaust system twice, 4 different sensors, and random check engine lights that only required a software update. I decided to sell it at 40,000 miles before the warranty was over, as I didn't want to risk owning it outside of warranty. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.

  2. Godfrey Kautzer 2024-09-13

I've had the truck for about 6 weeks now and it looks great both inside and out. However, I noticed that the front seat back moves and I took it back to the dealer. They checked it and said that nothing was broken and that it was normal for this truck. I wasn't satisfied with their answer, so I took it to another dealer and they said the same thing. I'm still having a hard time with this issue and I even contacted GM, but they don't seem to be concerned. Although there was a recall on the 2015 model for a loose seat, nothing seems to be happening with this one. I've never experienced this in any other vehicle before.

The vehicle has experienced multiple transmission issues, requiring four separate repairs in under five years and 43,000 miles. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend purchasing a Chevy. This review serves as a cautionary tale for potential buyers.

Your truck drives and handles very well, but unfortunately it has spent a number of short and long stays in the shop, including the last two weeks for a rear end overhaul. It's been a tough road with my 2016 crew cab, which only has 14250 miles. Based on my experience, I would advise against purchasing this truck.

If you're in the market for a small truck, I would recommend the Tacoma Toyota as it offers great value. However, I had a poor experience with another truck that had cheap materials and started falling apart after only 22,000 miles. Despite this, I have had no issues with my 1500 Ram which has 41,000 miles on it. Thank you for considering my experience.

Congratulations on your new 2016 Colorado LT 4x4 in Rainforest green with dark ash leather! It sounds like you got a great deal with 10% off MSRP of $40K and a 1.99% 6 year loan. The truck looks great and has all the upgrades you wanted, including the Conv and luxury package, plus safety package. It's also the perfect size for your garage and easy to park with a good turning radius. While the ride is generally very nice, there are some sharp jolts on bad pavement. The front seats may be a bit narrow for some, but the heated feature is a nice touch and it's great that you can raise the seat. It's good to hear that you did your research and found that the Colorado is the best mid-size truck in your opinion. It's no surprise that you get a lot of attention with such a unique and good-looking truck! It's also great to hear that you still love your truck after 29,000 miles and that you've added some custom upgrades that have improved the sound and gas mileage. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!12-20-17 - Now I have 37,000 miles on my Colorado and I still love it! I haven't had any problems at all. I'm still getting 21 MPG overall, which is way better than I expected, especially since I have 4WD and usually haul stuff around. I've gotten used to the narrow seats and they don't bother me anymore. The only issue I've had is with the 6-speed transmission. It hesitates too long before kicking in to a lower gear when you need power quick. Chevy did this to get better MPG, but it's irritating when you're on the freeway and need power. You have to stomp on the accelerator! I've also driven in the snow and gone mudding in it, and it did great at both. People still check out my truck and I think it's the best-looking truck on the market. UPDATE: June 29th, 2018: I now have 43,000 miles and still no issues or problems. I'm still getting 21 MPG combined city/highway. The only services I've needed are regular oil changes and tire rotations. My brother wants to buy one now. It looks like an updated Colorado is coming out for 2019, so there might be some good deals on 2018 models. UPDATE: July 2nd, 2019: I now have 55,000 miles and still no issues or problems. The original tires are still good and I'll most likely get another 10,000 miles out of them. Speaking of tires, I just had a screw go through the back driver's side and got a flat. The dash tells you the air in each tire, which is a great feature and helped me know I had low air. UPDATE: Jan 2nd, 2020: I now have 62,000 miles and still no issues. I did get 4 new tires at 61,000 miles. The originals still had tread, but I was slipping more on wet surfaces. I put on Bridgestone Dueler Alenza Plus. They have very good traction and are smooth. The redesigned Colorado is coming out in 2022. I'm hoping they improve the seats, interior looks, and transmission. UPDATE July 2020: I just went in for service at 65,000 miles and there were no issues. The brakes still have 5 to 10 thousand miles left on the pads. Another bonus is that the resale value of this truck is still very high, around $20,000. UPDATE: January 2023-123,000 miles.Truck is still running great, although I'm only getting 19.5 MPG now. However, I'm excited to test drive the brand new 2023 Colorado this summer. I hope they have improved the acceleration issue and interior comfort. Looking forward to it!

After owning this new Duramax Colorado for 10,000 miles, and with the 'honeymoon' period now behind me, I can confirm that most of the professional review articles you will read from Chevy's pre-launch media event and test drive weekend in Solvang California are accurate. If this is your first diesel vehicle, you may find it a bit noisy at idle and low speeds, but if you have previously owned diesel vehicles, you will find it very quiet at idle and low speed driving. At highway speeds, you will hardly notice a difference in quietness and refinement between the diesel and gas options. In my view, the diesel fits this truck much better than the gas options, (and I drove all engines extensively before buying).... it's smooth and punchy without any wailing, hi rev drama. Truly satisfying with great passing. If you are looking for a 'racetruck', buy the V6 or something else. The Duramax is just adequately smooth. As for MPG, the vehicle's trip computer is overly optimistic, although its true MPG is within close specs of the EPA's rating. For example, I have had mellow 60MPH highway runs where, after 300-400 miles, the trip meter reports around 32 MPG, yet a real check with a calculator at the fuel pump revealed around 30 MPG. Still not bad, just do not buy into many of the anecdotes you will read from owners/reviewers reporting outrageous fuel mileage above and beyond the EPA's rating. (Remember, people love to boast and justify their hard earned money spent). Overall, I had a very satisfying experience with this truck. It's not perfect, but then again, we consumers have become very spoiled in our expectations of what cars should be these days. The Z71 heated seats with lumbar adjustment are great for my bad, post-surgery back. The control layout is very functional, and the overall feel (door slams, no squeaks, rattles etc.) is superb. The Bluetooth system is not perfect, but then again, what Bluetooth system is?Very rarely do hangups or glitches occur. The system works flawlessly most of the time. Apple Carplay is great, but I only use it on long trips or for navigation, as it requires you to plug in, whereas I mostly keep my phone in my pocket. Music, phone, Siri, etc. work great with the steering wheel controls. On the other hand, as a long-time fan of the Toyota product, I had eagerly been waiting for the new 2016 Tacoma to arrive throughout 2015. When it did, I test drove many of them, even rented one and drove it 100 miles, trying to love it, but I just couldn't for some reason. GM lured me over, as they proved, in my view, that they were the hungry underdog seeking to knock off the Tacoma. I believe they did just that. I just hope this truck proves as reliable as the Tacoma over the years to come. However, a current Consumer Reports rating on the new Tacoma actually has it in last place for reliability for now, so we shall see.

I went with the 2.8 duramax and it has been a great decision so far! The engine is powerful and efficient, making it perfect for towing and long drives. The engine brake is a fantastic feature that makes driving in hills a breeze. I've already put 5000 miles on the truck and have been averaging 25 mpg, even while towing at highway speeds. I've even gotten up to 30 mpg on the highway! The only downside is the front air dam, which I found to be unnecessary and difficult to remove. Also, the Laser Blue color can sometimes appear more purple than blue, which is a bit disappointing.

I have driven 175K in my 2016 Colorado Z71 and it has been a great experience. Despite driving in the mountains, the mileage is 21 combined, which is not bad at all. On a trip to Vegas, I averaged 23 (thanks to the V6 engine). The truck is very quiet on the inside and the Bose system sounds great. The ride is very good for a truck and the seats are pretty comfortable. Overall, I would give it a 4.7 out of 5. Unfortunately, the truck was rear-ended on the freeway at 45 miles per hour and was declared a total loss. However, I am happy to report that there were no major health issues, although I do have a minor question about why the airbags didn't go off when I was pushed into the car in front of me. Despite this, I would still strongly recommend this truck. Update: Now at 158K, I can confidently say that my previous comments still hold true, except for a power steering light that has come on a couple of times. A full service at 150K cost me $950.00 and that included everything from plugs to all fluids and belts. Update 3: At 181K, the truck is still running strong!!! Overall, it's a great truck with no breakdowns to date!!!!

This truck is incredibly spacious and comfortable, even with two adults and three adolescents. The gas mileage is impressive, whether you're taking short trips or long ones. Driving it is always a pleasure, and the body style never fails to draw attention from other people. I use this vehicle for family trips as well as off-road adventures, and it suits me perfectly.
