2009 Audi A5 problems

audi logo

The Audi A5 is a series of compact executive coupé cars produced by the German automobile manufacturer Audi since June 2007. The A5 range additionally comprises the coupe, cabriolet, and "Sportback" (a five-door liftback with a fastback roofline) version of the Audi A4 saloon and estate models.

Under Audi's internal platform numbering convention, the A5 is a member of the B-platform series of vehicles, sharing its platform designation with the A4 saloon and Avant. The first generation A5 (Type 8T) is therefore a member of the B8 family, whilst the second generation model (Type 8W6) is based on the B9. Both are derived from the Volkswagen MLB (Modular Longitudinal Matrix) architecture.

First generation (2007)

Initial release

When presented at the March 2007 Geneva Motor Show, the A5 marked Audi's return to the compact executive coupé market since the (B3/B4) Audi 80 based coupé model ended production in 1996. On May 10, 2006, Audi confirmed that the A5 would go into production. The B6/B7 A4 spawned a convertible variant but not a coupé. For the fourth-generation A4 (B8), Audi decided to spin off the cabriolet, along with a new coupé and 4-door fastback sedan, into a nameplate of its own as the A5.

The A5 was the first of the B8 family of vehicles to be released (the others being the A4 and the Q5 crossover SUV), all based on the Audi MLP platform (Modular Longitudinal Platform) which underpin the next generation A6 and A8.

The A5 is the third coupé in Audi's line up, following the second generation TT and the R8. The A5 adopted design elements of the Nuvolari quattro concept car. The A5 debuted with the 3.2 litre FSI V6 engine delivering 195 kW (265 PS; 261 hp).

Common 2009 Audi A5 problems

The Audi A5 2009 is a popular luxury vehicle, but like any car, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners of this car:

  • High oil consumption: Some Audi A5 2009 models, particularly those with 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engines, have been reported to suffer from high oil consumption. If you suspect that your car is using too much oil, it is essential to have it inspected by an Audi dealer to determine if it is using more oil than it should be. If it fails, the cost of engine repairs could be more than the car is worth.
  • Fuel leaks: Fuel has been found to leak from the fuel rails of some Audi A5 2009 models built between 18 February, 2014, and 2 September, 2016. If your car is affected, it is crucial to have it repaired as soon as possible to prevent any potential fire hazards.
  • Auxiliary heater element failure: Some Audi A5 2009 models made between 1 April, 2011, and 31 July, 2015, could have a problem with the auxiliary heater element of the air conditioning system failing. In extreme cases, this could lead to a fire. Your local Audi dealer will be able to tell you whether or not your car is affected by this.
  • Suspension issues: Some Audi A5 2009 owners have reported issues with the suspension, such as noise from the windows and problems with the electronics . It is essential to have any suspension issues inspected and repaired as soon as possible to prevent any further damage to the car.

When buying a used Audi A5 2009, it is essential to check for these common problems and ensure that the car has a complete service history. It is also recommended to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing to ensure that it is in good condition.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-26
  • VIN: WAUDK78T49A
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY AIR BAG LIGHT AND PARKING LIGHT ICON CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME WHILE STARTING AND REMAIN ON. I HAVE READ THE EXACT SAME DESCRIPTION FROM OTHER AUDI OWNERS DESCRIBED IN RECALL 6901 16V376. WHY IS MY CAR NOT INCLUDED?? I HAVE RESTARTED MY TIMES TO NO AVAIL.
2017-03-28

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-02-10
  • VIN: WAUDK78T59A
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I PURCHASED THE CAR USED IN 2015 WITH 35K MILES. SINCE THEN, ITS BEEN OVER ELEVEN TIMES REGARDING WATER LEAKING ISSUES, PARTICULAR INVOLVING THE SUNROOF DRAINS ESPECIALLY THE RIGHT REAR DRAIN OVER THE PASSENGER QUARTER PANEL WINDOW NEAR THE AIRBAG AREA (C-PILLAR). THE HEADLINER HAD TO BE REPLACED AT LEAST ONCE (IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED OTHER TIMES, BUT THE DEALERSHIP ONLY CLEANED THE STAINS). THE SUNSHADE HAD TO BE REPLACED/REPAIR TWICE BECAUSE IT WAS DAMAGED DURING MANIPULATION OF THE HEADLINER, AND THE SUNROOF HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT WAS DAMAGED, AND THEN SUBSEQUENTLY ADJUSTED DUE TO SQUEAKING. THIS SUNROOF CONTINUES TO HAVE DRAINAGE ISSUES AFTER A HEAVY RAIN, WHICH RESULTS IN WATER LEAKAGE ONTO AND STAINING THE HEADLINER. EACH TIME THE DEALERSHIP STATES THAT THE DRAINS WERE BLOCKED AND NEEDED CLEANING, BUT THE CAR IS MOSTLY GARAGED KEPT AND IS NOT EXPOSED TO A LOT OF TREE LITTER. I ASKED IF THERE IS A PERMANENT FIX, AND I'VE CONTACTED AUDI USA REGARDING THIS ISSUE ASKING FOR A PERMANENT FIX OR REPURCHASE/REPLACEMENT OF THE VEHICLE TO WHICH THEY RESPONSE WAS NO THEY CAN'T HELP ME OR RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THEY SUGGESTED THAT I WORK WITH THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER, WITH WHOM I'VE ALREADY WORKED WITH AND THEY'VE BEEN HELPFUL, BUT IF IT IS A DESIGN FLAW, THEN AUDI USA SHOULD DO SOMETHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM PERMANENTLY OR BUYBACK THE VEHICLES AND MAKE THEIR CONSUMERS WHOLE. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT RUSTING, COMPROMISE OF THE SIDE AIRBAG (C-PILLAR), AND FUTURE DETERIORATION OF THE HEADLINER. BUT ALSO THE INCONVENIENCE AND FRUSTRATION OF TAKING THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP AFTER A HEAVY RAIN (52MI DRIVE ONE-WAY) TO DEAL WITH A LEAKY ROOF DRAIN. PLEASE HELP, INITIATE A RECALL SO CONSUMERS CAN BE MADE WHOLE BY WAY OF REPAIR/REPLACEMENT OR RE-PURCHASE OF THEIR VEHICLES THIS WOULD SHOW AUTO MANUFACTURES THAT THEY CANNOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CONSUMERS.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-04-15
  • VIN: WAUDK78T49A
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: RIGHT SIDE (PASSENGER) DOOR LATCH/LOCK MECHANISM FAILED. BECAUSE THE LOCK FAILED, THE ALARM SYSTEM DOES NOT SEE THE DOOR AS CLOSED AND WILL NOT ARM THE SYSTEM. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE DOOR CANNOT BE LOCKED UNLESS YOU ACTIVATE USING THE CHILD PROOF OVERIDE NEAR THE LATCH MECHANISM. YOU MUST REACH IN THROUGH THE DRIVERS SIDE TO OPEN THE DOOR USING THE HANDLE. THIS IS A SAFETY AND SECURITY ISSUE THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN ON ANY CAR WITH LESS THAN 55K MILES ON IT. THE AUDI FORUMS HAVE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE WITH THE B8 MODEL CAR (A4/A5/S4/S5/RS5). ADDITIONALLY, THE DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE OVER $650 FOR PARTS AND LABOR. THIS MAY BE A DIY IF YOU ARE VERY SKILLED (READ: A MECHANIC) AND IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT SPECIALTY TOOLS. ADDITIONALLY, THE PART ALONE COSTS $200 FOR A NEW REPLACEMENT. USED PARTS ARE AVAILABLE BUT IF THE FAILURE RATE IS CLOSE TO THE 50-55K MILE MARK, NOT MANY OF THESE ARE AVAILABLE AND THOSE THAT ARE AVAILABLE ARE QUESTIONABLE WITH REGARDS TO RELIABILITY. I HAVE ASKED AUDI AMERICA (USA) FOR GOOD FAITH ASSISTANCE BUT THEY HAVE REMAINED SILENT.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-08-11
  • VIN: WAUDK78T59A
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: AUDI A5 2009 IS NOT A RELIABLE CAR I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER AUDI PRODUCT IN MY LIFETIME. I CANT BELIEVE HOW I THOUGHT I WAS ALONE WITH THE MISFIRE ISSUE AND I FIND IN MY RESEARCH THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WITH THE SAME ISSUES FOR VARIOUS MODELS UNBELIEVABLE. HAD I SEARCH THIS PRODUCT, WOULD HAVE BEEN MY ONLY WISH. THE CAR WOULDN'T EVEN START UP TODAY. HAD THIS CAR FOR ONLY 8 MONTHS. AT 45,000...

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-13
  • VIN: WAUDK78T89A
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: KEYLESS DOOR SENSORS STARTED TO MALFUNCTION AND WOULD NOT UNLOCK VEHICLE WHEN TOUCHED. BROUGHT PROBLEM TO ATTENTION OF DEALERSHIP, WHICH STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM AND THEREBY REFUSED TO FIX ISSUE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. NOW THAT THE VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, THE PROBLEM WAS FOUND AND THE COST HAS TO COME OUT OF MY POCKET. THERE SHOULD BE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT REGARDING THESE KEYLESS DOOR SENSOR FAILURES. *TR

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-16
  • VIN: WAUDK78T19A
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: AFTER LETTING MY CAR SIT FOR 8+ HOURS, EVERY TIME I START MY CAR AND PUT IT INTO EITHER DRIVE OR REVERSE, IT PULLS HARD AS IF I'M PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR, WHEN I'M NOT. IN ORDER TO NOT LET IT ACCELERATE, I HAVE TO PRESS DOWN ON THE BRAKE QUITE HARD. THIS FINALLY GOES AWAY AFTER DRIVING IT FOR A FEW MILES. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-10-14
  • VIN: WAUDK78T59A
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: WATER PUMP COOLANT CAMPAIGN MY AUTO BODY SHOP SAID MY CAR IS LEAKING COOLANT AND THERES A CAMPAIGN OUT ON THE WATER PUMP. I'M ASKING IF YOU COULD PUSH THE CAMPAIGN THROUGH AND RECALL THE WATER PUMPS TO FIX THIS ISSUE AS I'M AFRAID MY CAR WILL BREAK DOWN. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-17
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: AUDI A5 3.0L DIESEL QUATTRO EXPERIENCED TOTAL LOSS OF POWER. LUCKILY HAD JUST COME TO A HALT. ENGINE WILL NOT RESTART. TURNS OUT THE FAILURE OF MAIN THE MAIN DIESEL PUMP DESTROYED ENTIRE FUEL LINE SYSTEM! AUDI QUOTED 13,000K REPLACEMENT COST TO CHANGE ALL 3 PUMPS, ALL 6 INJECTORS AND CLEAN FUEL TANK! I AM SHOCKED. AUDI DEALER SAID QUITE A FEW CASES HAVE OCCURRED WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM! VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT THIS KNOWN ISSUE. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-02-01
  • VIN: WAUDK78T29A
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE DEVELOPED AN ENGINE SURGE WHEN STARTING COLD (HEATED GARAGE 45) AND MOVING APPROX 50 TO 75 FEET. THE RPM SURGES FROM 500 TO 1800RPM SEVERAL TIMES AND WILL OCCASIONALLY DIE. THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN WITH VARIOUS BRANDS OF PREMIUM FUEL. THE DEALER CLAIMS THEY HAVE ADDED A FUEL CONDITIONER, REPLACED THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS AND REPROGRAMMED THE ENGINE COMPUTER. THE VEHICLE STILL SURGES AT VARIOUS TIMES. IT HAS DIED AFTER LEAVING AN ON STREET PARKING SPOT IN TRAFFIC. IT DOES NOT SURGE ON SUBSEQUENT STARTS WITHIN 6 - 8 HOURS AND GENERALLY NOT DURING SUMMER MONTHS. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-01-09
  • VIN: WAUZZZ8F4AN
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: OCTOBER 2010 SEVERE WOBBLING OF STEERING WHEEL, AFTER NUMEROUS COMPLAINT WITH DEALER THEY HAVE TO CARRY OUT FULL WHEEL ALIGNMENT THAT TOOK 3 ATTEMPTS TO RECTIFY. THIS SAME COMPLAINT HAS NOW STARTED AGAIN ALTHOUGH ONLY A PULL TO THE LEFT WHILE DRIVING, THIS HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED BY AUDI DEALER AND WHEEL CAMBER APPEARS TO BE THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER WOULD NOT RECTIFY FAULT UNDER WARRANTY AS THIS IS ACCORDING TO THEM NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR OF VEHICLE, I HAVE DONE 2.5K MILES SINCE ALL 4 WHEELS WERE DONE AND I HAVE NOT HIT OR DAMAGED MY WHEELS ALIGNMENT AND AUDI WILL NOT SUPPORT ME AS THE DRIVER AND WILL ONLY BACK THEIR DEALERSHIP. I DO BELIEVE MY CAR HAS A PROBLEM AS THE ALIGNMENT IS OUT ON THE N/S FRONT AND REAR WHEEL. HAS ANYONE ELSE SUFFERED FROM THIS.....I REFUSED TO PAY THEM UNDER RANSOM AND I AM NOW SEEKING A SECOND OPINION. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-01-09
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE WATER PUMP BROKE CAUSING THE COOLANT TO LEAK AND THE "STOP ENGINE" WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON. THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I WAS ABLE TO PUT SOME WATER IN THE EMPTY COOLANT TANK - BUT ALL OF THE LIQUID LEAKED THROUGH. STEAM WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE BAY. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT I PUT WATER IN THE COOLANT TANK AND DRIVE TO THE FACILITY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. (IT WAS ABOUT TWO MILES AWAY.) THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAILED WATER PUMP, CAUSING THE COOLANT TO LEAK DUE TO THE PRESSURE. APPARENTLY FIVE OTHER VEHICLES (AUDI A5 AND Q5) WERE BROUGHT IN OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS. REPLACEMENT PART IS BACK ORDERED AND VEHICLE IS STILL IMMOBILIZED AT THE DEALERSHIP AWAITING PART FROM GERMANY. THIS VEHICLE HAD ITS 5,000 MILE SERVICE LESS THAN A WEEK PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. *TR

Negative 2009 Audi A5 car reviews

  1. Keegan White 2024-09-25

The roof mechanism requires improvement, especially considering the price point of the Audi. The limited tilting capability is disappointing. Additionally, the dashboard design is clumsy and not user-friendly. Adjusting anything on the dashboard can be difficult and may result in damage to the vehicle. However, these issues do not detract from the overall quality of the car.

Positive 2009 Audi A5 car reviews

  1. Jovany Krajcik 2025-01-08

Great value! I've owned quite a few cars in the past 5 years, including a 911Cab, 535i, SL55AMG, and CL500. While they were all impressive, none of them compare to my new loaded '09 A5 in terms of value. The SL55 had power and torque, but it lacked the value and back seat for kids. I also test drove the S5, but I'm glad I went with the A5 instead, especially with DriveSelect. Sometimes I want the 911 handling, and other times I prefer the comfort of a Lexus. With DriveSelect, the decision is mine, and it all works perfectly! I predict that Audi will rightfully gain market share over the next few years, and MB, BMW, and Lexus will lose out. It's no wonder the A5 was named

  3. Hayley Leuschke 2024-11-16

After 8 months, I am still thrilled with the car. I have never owned a car that got so much attention from so many people. It's just so much fun to drive, and the Quattro all-wheel drive is a blast to challenge in corners.

  4. Kennith Homenick 2024-11-12

You've done your research and considered a range of options, including the BMW3 and Z4, Mercedes C300 and SLK, Infiniti G37, Cadillac CTS and Audi TT. After four months and 5000 miles, I can confidently say that the A5 is the best choice for me, offering the perfect combination of style, performance, comfort and value. The spacious trunk easily fits two sets of golf clubs, making it perfect for weekend getaways. While I love the look of the 19

  5. Frank Rosenbaum 2024-11-08

We are so glad we chose the A5 for its beauty and refinement. It has exceeded our expectations and we couldn't be happier with our decision. This is actually our second Audi, as we need all-wheel drive and appreciate the quality furnishings. The power delivery is incredibly smooth and we're getting over 25 miles per gallon so far. We opted for the select drive, tech package, and navigation, and everything works delightfully. The 6-speed manual transmission works flawlessly, with plenty of torque in every gear.
