The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.

The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)

The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.

The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.

The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.

In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.

In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.

Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.

Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

  • Summary: 225/45zr1794w purchased at discount tire. TPMS system failed after tire installation. I told the technician and he reset the system. Five miles later TPMS indicator came on. Malfunction TPMS. I monitor the tire pressure periodically and the tires seemed fine. While driving on Florida 528 to the airport i heard a rumbling and pulled over immediately. The tire sidewall was cut almost all the way around the tire. I assume from low pressure or tire malfunction. The tire is only a few months old. I am going to visit discount tire today and see what they say/do. I commute 150 miles a day at highway speeds. Fortunately I was able to pull over and not damage my rim. I removed the tire and put the spare on. I was flying to Columbia south America and nearly missed my flight. I have not found any reason the tire lost air pressure. Because this tire was nearly new it should have held air. Had discount tire fully corrected the TPMS system i may have been able to save the tire and not experienced the horrid experience of changing the tire on the highway 70 mph speed limit however the actual speeds are from 80mph up. Fortunately i work for the Orlando international Airport and had a colleague park my car to avoid missing the flight. Had four road hugger ties on my Audi now 3 and a spare. I'm not sure what the outcome will be but a brand new tire should not have deflated an had discount tire performed as professional technicians i most likely would not be contacting your organization.   • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2006-2013 Audi A3, 2007-2009 A4 Cabriolet and S4 Cabriolet, 2008 RS4 Cabriolet, 2009-2012 Q5, and 2010-2012 Audi A5 Cabriolet and S5 Cabriolet vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 23, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69R6. Note: This recall partially supersedes recall 16V-078.

THE FUEL INJECTION PULSES COULD COINCIDE WITH THE NATURAL FREQUENCY OF THE INJECTOR LINE #2, IN SPECIFIC LOAD AND RPM CONDITIONS. THIS RESONANCE CREATES ADDITIONAL STRESS IN THE FUEL LINE.
  • Consequence: DUE TO THE RESONANCE CONDITION, INJECTOR LINE NUMBER 2 COULD DEVELOP SMALL CRACKS WHICH COULD LEAD TO FUEL LEAKAGE. LEAKING FUEL IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, MAY LEAD TO A FIRE.
  • Remedy: VOLKSWAGEN WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED FUEL INJECTOR LINE FOR THE NUMBER 2 CYLINDER ON CERTAIN VEHICLES AND WILL INSTALL VIBRATION DAMPERS ON ALL OF THE INJECTOR LINES. VOLKSWAGEN AND AUDI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS TO HAVE THE VEHICLES REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.

    After the warranty period, unfortunately, there were some issues with the car such as the manifold, injectors, main engine seal, oil separator, and fuse housing under the hood. Although I have been driving for 32 years, I have only experienced bad gasoline twice with this car, which is quite rare. While the car may be over-engineered and temperamental, it can still be enjoyable to own if you have the resources to maintain it. It's worth noting that my experience with VW cars has also been somewhat unreliable.

    My car seems to be using an excessive amount of oil, which makes me hesitant to drive it for long distances. Despite checking the oil and finding it to be remarkably dirty, it was full. However, after driving around 100 miles, the oil level dropped significantly without any warning. I have taken it back to my Audi dealership three times and will be returning for a fourth attempt. I really enjoy this car and would prefer not to sell it due to poor treatment from the dealership. I believe that once we purchase an Audi, we become part of the family and deserve exceptional service. As Audi drivers, we expect high performance, quality, and top-notch treatment. Thank you!

    I purchased this car used from a low volume dealer with 54k on the odometer. Although it required over $5k in repairs during the first year, I still like the car. It is expensive to fix, but when it is good, it is really good. Nothing cruises at highway speeds like a German car. The car has plenty of power, even on a high mileage engine. One thing I learned during the first year of ownership is that it is best not to take it to a dealership for service. You will overpay, in a ridiculous way. The best thing you can do is learn to do your own maintenance/repairs and be vigilant. The interior is holding up pretty well and it looks like a much newer car than it is. The front seats are supportive and comfortable even on long road trips. The leather has held up well with a minimum amount of creasing and no cracks. Although there were a few repairs involved, especially once you break six figures on the odometer, most used car ownership experiences have some repairs involved. For an Audi/Volkswagen, the parts are expensive and the service at the dealership is outrageous. However, with some research and effort, you can save a lot of money and still enjoy the car. The navigation system can be a bit challenging to use, but once you get the hang of it, it works fine. If you prefer, you can always use your phone for navigation. The Bluetooth is easy to program and the sound quality is great. While it doesn't stream audio to the radio, there is an input for an aux cord and the satellite radio is a nice feature that my wife enjoys. The car's performance is definitely the best part. It's like driving a GTI in a fancy suit. The S-line sport package provides excellent steering feel and confidence during cornering. The transmission is top-notch, with smooth clutch engagement and a shifter that glides into gear effortlessly. The exterior of the car still looks new and stylish, and I receive compliments on it all the time. Overall, while there have been some challenges, owning an Audi has been a great experience for me.

    I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my '09 A3 2.0T Quattro DSG that I picked up in January. After breaking it in and pushing it a bit, I've been thoroughly impressed with its performance. The auto shift is flawless and returns decent fuel economy (about 22mpg in the city so far). When pushed or in Sport mode, this car really shines. It smoothly accelerates up to 80+ before you know it, making passing a breeze. The exterior and interior fit and styling have been excellent with no issues to-date. The only minor issues I've come across are the floor mats (not very wear or stain-resistant), the bright yellow passenger airbag off indicator that stands out from the rest of the dash lights, and the lack of small storage compartments for coins or other. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and fun ride!

    I live in San Francisco and I absolutely love my Audi A3! It's the perfect size to park anywhere and gives great gas mileage. The car takes off quickly without giving you whiplash and the transmission is incredibly smooth. The only downside I've noticed is that the temperature controls can be a bit tricky to adjust. You have to turn the knobs click by click or hold them for a while to go from cold to hot. Other than that, I couldn't be happier with my car!

    I hope you had a great experience at your local dealer! It sounds like you made a great choice with the 2009 A3 2.0 quattro with bluetooth, open sky, and satellite radio. Even though you initially thought you wanted a manual, the DSG transmission is growing on you. It's great to hear that you've always maintained your Audi's and have never had any reliability issues other than normal wear and tear items. The A3 is a well-built and versatile car that's perfect for running errands in town and also does well on longer trips. Enjoy your new ride!

    Purchase my A3 six manual with convenience pkg, cold weather, sky, Sport pkg, titanium pkg. I think it's worth every dollar spent. It's fast, solid and very comfortable to drive. I've driven 2000 miles so far and I love it. It's great in snow, cornering, steering and brakes. The Bose sound system is superb. It's the best car I've ever bought. Who needs memory seats? How many times do you use them? It's built right!
