The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.

The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)

The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.

The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.

The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.

In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.

In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.

Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.

Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20
  • VIN: WAUKFGFF1F1
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Shortly after starting the car, and while exiting a parking lot, the car stalled and lost engine power. I was able to start the car back up for long enough to be able to pull back into the parking lot however after the car got parked the engine refused to start and stay running for the next hour. After a check using OBD11, the codes were showing the cause of the original problem was low fuel pressure which ended up causing misfires. The only way I was able to get the car running and staying running was by purging the system repeatedly by turning on the ignition without starting the car. This has all happened once before while I was driving at relatively low speeds (around 25 MPH) in a town, and I had to go through the same process. No warning lights show for the first multiple attempts at starting the car until it consistently fails to start. No inspections have taken place.

SEAT BELTS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • VIN: WAUACGFF0F1
  • Components: SEAT BELTS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Dear NHTSA, I am filing a complaint about the handling of a recall repair on my 2015 Audi A3 (VIN: [XXX] ) for the suction jet pump. The service experience has been frustrating and raises concerns about the repair’s quality. 1.First Visit - Inadequate Information: During my first visit to the service center, over an hour away, I was turned away because my fuel level was too high. I was never informed that my gas tank needed to be below a certain level for the repair, resulting in wasted time and travel. 2.Second Visit - Check Engine Light Still On: On my second visit, the suction jet pump was supposedly repaired, but my check engine light remained on. I had informed the service advisor that the light was related to an EVAP system malfunction, which I was told could be caused by a faulty suction jet pump. After speaking with multiple mechanics, I learned that a malfunctioning suction jet pump could cause fuel to enter the EVAP system, damaging parts like the purge valve or charcoal canister. 3.Unreasonable Charges: The service advisor insisted that the remaining EVAP issues were unrelated to the recall and wanted to charge $220 for another diagnostic and repairs, without even inspecting the car after the recall service. This seems unfair, as there’s no way to confirm without a proper check. 4.Missing Seat Belt Buckle: After the recall service, I discovered that the rear driver’s side seat belt buckle was missing. This is a major safety concern and needs to be addressed. I request NHTSA’s help in investigating the repair quality and ensuring these issues are resolved fairly. Thank you for your attention. • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This is in regards to your investigation into a recall for Audi 2015 A3 fuel system issues. My car was repaired as part of that initial recall, however, i am experiencing a bunch of fuel related issues as of now. My fuel tank will no longer fill with gas. The dealership said i need a need fuel tank. Then at the exact same time, my low side fuel pump failed. I mentioned to the dealership about the recall and the fuel problems, they told me they were not related. I paid to replace the lower said fuel pump. Now a few months later my high side fuel pump has failed. I then found the article about the investigation about fuel issues, they told me again it was not related. So now they are asking me to replace the high side fuel pump. I told them it was not a coincidence that both fuel pumps and my gas tank all fail at the same time along with the investigation. They again told me its not related. I opened up a case with Audi of America and they are investigating. Having issues with the fuel delivery system will cause the car to sudden stop and stall at high rates of speed, and has caused me to break down in the middle of the road with no warning.

  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle is not taking fuel, there is early stopping of the fuel nozzle and there is significant fuel spillback. Fuel would go in for 2 seconds and the fuel nozzle shuts off. I was trying to refill and then there was spillback of fuel that propelled all over my body and all over the floor of the gas station. I had taken my vehicle to a licensed repair shop who thought it might be a carbon canister which I got replaced. I tried to refuel after the maintenance and the problem persisted. My vehicle once again could not refuel, after sitting at a gas station for 10 minutes I was calling my Husband, all of the sudden what little fuel was left in the tank shot back out and spilled all over the gas station floor and side of my car. I took my car to the licensed repair facility who then called my warranty company and they had adjuster come out as the repair facility tried to refuel my car, and it would not refuel and adjuster took videos of the fuel spilling back out. The warranty would not cover my vehicle because they say it is EVAP and they found a safety recall that matches the symptoms NHTSA: 16V647 for 2015 Audi A3 Sedans. Mine is a 2015 Audi A3 Sedan but for some reason this is not covered according to my VIN #

  • Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will install an overlay label containing the correct vehicle production date, free of charge. The recall June 23, 2017. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 51F5.

  • Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf, Golf SportWagen, GTI, Audi A3 sedan and A3 Cabriolet vehicles. Due to a problem with the suction pump inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system.
  • Consequence: As fuel accumulates in the EVAP system, it may leak out through the charcoal canister filter element. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suction pump, free of charge. The recall began November 2016. Volkswagen owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298, Audi owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are 20Y6 and 20Y5. Negative 2015 Audi A3 car reviews

I had some issues with the car during the four months that I owned it. Unfortunately, the dealership was only able to have it for half of that time. Despite charging me for each visit, the power window issues persisted and could not be resolved. Additionally, the car would shake at certain speeds (40mph and then again at 60mph), and the dealership suggested that I purchase four new wheels to fix the issue. However, this did not solve the problem. The navigation system also experienced some intermittent issues, but eventually started working again. Overall, my experience with this car was not positive. Despite its attractive appearance, it was not worth the high price tag. In fact, I ultimately decided to trade it in to avoid further time, money, and sanity loss.

The rear differential of my 2015 A3 Cabriolet failed at 63K miles. Despite this setback, I still consider it a really fun car.

I hope you're doing well. I wanted to bring to your attention that there have been a few recalls for your car. Unfortunately, the factory put the wrong dates on the label, so they don't know who to contact. It's important to note that you won't be notified about these recalls. It's better to be safe than sorry, so I suggest checking if your car is affected by these recalls. If you're unsure, I can help you find out. It's important to take care of these recalls as two of them are quite serious and could cause harm. My son was driving this car and it was towed to the shop. Let me know if you need any help with this.

Hello! I recently purchased a 2015 Audi A3 and overall, I'm really enjoying it. However, I've been experiencing some issues with the navigation MMI. It seems to be telling me that the car is in a different location than it actually is, and it's not detecting speed traps like other Audi's do here in Korea. I've taken it to the AUDI KOREA service center twice, but unfortunately they haven't been able to resolve the issue. While I'm disappointed with the service I received, I'm hopeful that Audi Headquarters will be able to find a solution. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

undefinedYou might want to consider a Beetle convertible instead and save yourself $20k. They have the same options and details since they are made by the same company. Although the convertible can be lumpy and crease easily, the Quattro is very nice in the winter. There are some glitchy annoyances such as the heater turning on full blast after closing the convertible on a hot day and the radio screen switching to local stations instead of presets when switching to navigation. However, I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

Positive 2015 Audi A3 car reviews

It's great to hear that you found the perfect car after such a long search! The 2015 model A3 2.0 Quattro Cabriolet sounds like an excellent choice, especially with its high build quality, smooth ride and handling, and impressive performance. It's no surprise that you're getting lots of positive comments from onlookers. While the MMI may take some getting used to, it's definitely worth it for the cool features it offers. And it's wonderful to hear that you haven't had any problems with your Audi - they're known for their dependability these days. Enjoy your new ride!

I've been driving my A3 for a month now and I absolutely love it! The car has tons of power and is really fun to drive. The front power seats are also incredibly comfortable. I was lucky enough to find a new 2015 model still on the lot and got a great deal - 8 grand off sticker price! As part of the deal, the dealer also CPO'd it for 100K with a 6-year warranty. The only downside is that the trunk is a bit small and I have to open the middle back seat to fit my golf clubs. I travel a lot and find it hard to keep the speed under 80 on the highway, but thankfully the speed alarm helps. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

I recently made a quick decision to purchase a stop gap car as I needed something urgently. Although I originally wanted a Golf R, I couldn't find one at the right price point. My criteria were AWD, fast, leather interior and moonroof. I was pleasantly surprised by the sedan A3, as I have never owned a sedan before, always Wagons and hatches. I am glad I did, as I have been really impressed with it. I purchased a 2015 2.0T Quattro model on CPO with 33k that I got for 21k before taxes, which I thought was a fair deal for a clean car with new tires, full service book and one owner. First of all, the looks are great: I loved the original 1997 A3 and this looks like it a little bit. It has a tight, timeless and classic style, and looks great in darker colors. Although it has a lot of brightwork which makes it look a bit dated, overall it is a nice car that people think is new even though it is 4 years old. The interior is of high quality: The leather is tough and hardwearing and surfaces are very nice to touch, there is nice trim (aluminum) and the machined knobs are a nice touch. Performance is GREAT. This car has 220 BHP and is relatively light so it really goes very nicely. Although the engine noise is subdued, the engine starter and transmission are both very whiny/loud when the car is cold. The worst aspect of the car is how it sounds in low gears first thing in the morning, like a CVT. The ride is fine and handling OK if a bit conservative. The reliability has been so-so in 4 months: I had to have the coolant system replaced under warranty and the door locks stopped working. However, both were covered by Audi with zero cost and a courtesy car. Overall, it is a nice city/commuting car and one I would be fine running longer distance in. I would recommend opting for the premium stereo and skipping the navigation and using Waze.
