The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.
The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.
First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)
The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.
The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.
In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.
In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.
Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.
Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

- Summary: AFTER STARTING THE CAR AND MOVING A SHORT DISTANCE, THE DASH DISPLAY SHOWED MULTIPLE WARNINGS REGARDING THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS. APPROXIMATELY 12 EXTERIOR LIGHTS HAD ALL GONE OUT AT ONCE. AFTER SOME RESEARCH ON THE ISSUE I CHECKED THE FUSE BOX IN THE ENGINE BAY AND FUSE F16 (30A) HAD MELTED WITH RESIDUE ON THE CONTACT BUT NOT FAILED. THE CONTACT ON THE FUSE BOX ALSO HAD RESIDUE AND THE SURROUNDING PLASTIC WAS MELTED AS WELL. THE SAME EXACT ISSUE OCCURRED ON MY 2009-2011 VW TIGUAN AND A RECALL WAS ISSUED (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V569000 AND VW RECALL NUMBER: 97Z9/2V). THE PART RECALLED IN THE TIGUAN IS THE SAME EXACT PART USED IN THE 2012 AUDI A3 (PART #: 1K0937125D). AOA SHOULD RECALL THE PART AS WAS DONE BY VW. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2012 Audi A3.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2012-2015 Passat, 2011-2014 Golf A6, and 2011-2013 Audi A3 diesel vehicles, thought to have been previously repaired under one of the Takata air bag recalls. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's side air bag inflators, free of charge. The recall began December 20, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are 69R6, 69Q8, 69Q9, and 69Y5.

(Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2006-2013 Audi A3, 2007-2009 A4 Cabriolet and S4 Cabriolet, 2008 RS4 Cabriolet, 2009-2012 Q5, and 2010-2012 Audi A5 Cabriolet and S5 Cabriolet vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 23, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69R6. Note: This recall partially supersedes recall 16V-078.

- Summary: VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL 2009-2012 JETTA AND JETTA SPORTWAGEN VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2008 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, AND MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 AUDI A3 VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, THAT ARE EQUIPPED WITH A 2.0L TDI COMMON RAIL DIESEL ENGINE/CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE. THE FUEL INJECTION PULSES COULD COINCIDE WITH THE NATURAL FREQUENCY OF THE INJECTOR LINE #2, IN SPECIFIC LOAD AND RPM CONDITIONS. THIS RESONANCE CREATES ADDITIONAL STRESS IN THE FUEL LINE.
- Consequence: DUE TO THE RESONANCE CONDITION, INJECTOR LINE NUMBER 2 COULD DEVELOP SMALL CRACKS WHICH COULD LEAD TO FUEL LEAKAGE. LEAKING FUEL IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, MAY LEAD TO A FIRE.
- Remedy: VOLKSWAGEN WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED FUEL INJECTOR LINE FOR THE NUMBER 2 CYLINDER ON CERTAIN VEHICLES AND WILL INSTALL VIBRATION DAMPERS ON ALL OF THE INJECTOR LINES. VOLKSWAGEN AND AUDI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS TO HAVE THE VEHICLES REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.

Congratulations on your new A3 TDI! It sounds like you're really enjoying it so far. The peppy acceleration and quick steering make for a fun driving experience, and the build quality and economy are impressive. While the ride may be a bit choppy, it's great to hear that the A3 feels sure-footed on the road. The interior and exterior design are also show-stoppers, which is always a plus. It's understandable that downsizing from a 540 BMW may take some adjustment, but it's great to hear that you're giving the A3 a big thumbs up. I'm so glad you traded in your 2008 Prius for the A3! It sounds like you're really enjoying all the amazing features it has to offer. The upscale interior and exterior, excellent mpg, and thrilling torque are all fantastic qualities. I'm also impressed by the organized iPod interface and the clear Bose sound system. The real-time traffic and crisp navigation screen are great features too. The LED lights and black open sky roof give the car a very European look, especially in Ibis white. It's great to hear that the transmission feels like a manual without all the work, and that the storage room is even a little better than the Prius. I recently purchased this car after taking it for a test drive of over 250 miles across several days. During the drive, I went up a very long grade from Knoxville to just past Mohawk up I-81 and was impressed with its fuel efficiency, getting 39.9 mpg Hwy and 34.8 city mpg. The PPI (inspection) was free and the car passed with flying colors after being thoroughly checked. The price of 11044.80 out the door was advised to be a great purchase. The seats are extremely comfortable and both seats are heated, with ample leg room for the passenger. The controls took a while to figure out, but once I got used to their position, they were easy to use. The car also has some interesting features, such as the ability to fold the mirrors for tight parking areas. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a comfortable and efficient ride.I discovered that stepping backwards with my right foot into the car first makes getting in much easier with my fused back from the S1-T11. Otherwise, I have to put the seat all the way down and all the way back to get in and out. Stepping in backwards saves my seat position and simplifies getting in and out. The telescoping/tilt wheel has little movement, but seat positioning with power function quickly utilizes this weakness and makes it a plus. This seat is perfect for me as I am 5'4 1/2Looks like the whole top will have to be replaced, including the cushion, to fix it. The storage area in the back is smaller than the Jetta, but still quite ample. The vents, knobs, and other features resemble a cockpit and were designed that way. They are easy to reach and use. The manual is easy to read and, for the most part, very helpful. Access to the 12-volt power and auxiliary input is under the front seat armrest and can be accessed through a sliding panel to the rear. I can even listen to my cassettes on a remote deck now! The TDI can be opened by the release just forward of the left knee. The motor hesitates at the start unless in sport position. It is easy to access all the fluids. This car has 34260 miles and purrs like a kitten. It's quite responsive when you need to punch it and holds hills well with no decrease in speed. It nibbles away at the oil, so keep an eye on it and carry extra with you just above the spare tire. Put a 1/8th inch cut-out of particle/cardboard and this will give you about 7 inches of ample storage area besides the provided pockets. This is a great car! I will update later.

I have had the car for 5 months now and I still find it amazing. It has performed flawlessly without any glitches and the mileage has been great. The interior is so versatile and handles all my needs. I feel very safe and secure when driving and I would definitely make the same purchase again. I highly recommend the TDI to everyone.

I will never purchase another VW, Audi or VAG product again. The total inaction after years of waiting on the Takata airbag recall and the tedious TDI BuyBack process, which took over 6 months for an offer letter, have left me with no confidence in the company.
