Common 1996 Nissan 200sx problems

The Nissan 200SX, produced from 1994 to 1998, is a popular choice among sports car enthusiasts due to its rear-wheel-drive feature and exceptional handling. However, like any vehicle, it is prone to certain issues that owners have reported over the years.

One of the most common problems with the Nissan 200SX is engine misfires, which can be caused by various factors such as faulty spark plugs, a clogged fuel filter, or a malfunctioning fuel injector.

Another common problem with the 200SX is oil consumption, which can be caused by worn piston rings or valve seals. Overheating is also a concern, often caused by a malfunctioning radiator or thermostat. These issues can be mitigated by regular maintenance and checks, such as replacing the oil and coolant as needed.

The Nissan 200SX is known for its body problems, particularly rust and paint issues. The car's paint is known to peel and fade easily, while rust can be a significant problem, particularly in the wheelarches and suspension struts. A thorough search for corrosion is vital when considering purchasing a 200SX, as even good cars may have some minor corrosion.

When looking for a Nissan 200SX, it is essential to check the driveline components to ensure they are in good condition. This is because many cars have been driven hard, leading to potential issues with the drivetrain. Additionally, it is crucial to check for modifications, as many cars have been modified, which can affect the car's performance and reliability.

Despite these issues, the Nissan 200SX remains a popular choice for car enthusiasts. With proper maintenance and care, this sports car can continue to provide a thrilling driving experience for years to come.

  • Summary: I OWN A 1996 NISSAN 200SX WITH . I PURCHASED THE CAR IN LATE SUMMER OF 2005. ON JULY 5 2006 MY SON WAS DRIVING THE CAR IN A RAIN STORM AND THE WIPERS STOPPED FUNCTIONING. THE NEXT DAY HE ASKED ME TO LOOK AT THE CAR AND I DISCOVERED THE WINDSHIELD WIPER LINKAGE HAD FAILED AT THE BALL JOINT WHERE THE CONNECTING ROD FROM THE MOTOR JOINS THE PIVOT ROD FOR THE WIPER BLADES. I DID A LITTLE RESEARCH AND DISCOVERED THIS PROBLEM WAS PREVIOUSLY REPORTED IN NHTSA RECALL 98V093000. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALER AND I WAS TOLD MY VIN HAD NO OUTSTANDING RECALLS. I CALLED NISSAN CORP. AND WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. HOWEVER, NISSAN IS GOING TO PULL THE ARCHIVES ON MY VEHICLE TO SEE IF IT HAS BEEN SERVICED FOR THIS RECALL. THIS PROCESS WILL TAKE SEVERAL DAYS. EVEN IF THIS CAR WAS PREVIOUSLY SERVICED FOR RECALL 98V093000, WHATEVER FIX WAS DONE OBVIOUSLY WASN'T SUFFICIENT BECAUSE THE PROBLEM RECURRED. I CONSIDER THIS A SERIOUS PROBLEM BECAUSE IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT. IF MY VIN NUMBER TURNS OUT NOT TO BE PART OF THE ORIGINAL RECALL GROUP THEN I BELIEVE NISSAN SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO EXPAND THE LIST OF VEHICLES COVERED BY THIS RECALL. *JB

Negative 1996 Nissan 200sx car reviews

  1. Laverna O'Connell 2024-10-03

I bought this car used back in 2002. At the time, I had a Camry with 160,000 miles that needed $5,000 worth of repairs. Instead of fixing it, I decided to use that money to buy the 200sx. Since then, I've put 24,000 miles on it. I did have to replace the brakes, struts, and a CV boot, as well as get a wheel alignment and new rotors since the purchase, but overall it's been a great car!

  2. Ayden Cronin 2024-05-27

It's a great vehicle, but the gas consumption is a bit high and the takeoff is a bit slow. Although it looks fast, it's actually quite slow.

  3. Kenyon Witting 2024-04-12

You have an excellent commuter car that is great on mileage and agile in traffic or curving roads. With routine maintenance, it has served your needs well. You confidently paid to have new struts, feeling it will continue to deliver over 4 more years of commute driving.

Positive 1996 Nissan 200sx car reviews

  1. Adolphus Rohan 2025-01-09

This car is sweet! It is very reliable. I have around 130,000 miles on it and it still runs the same as when I drove it off the lot.

  2. Quentin Kulas 2024-11-06

I bought this car brand new in '96 and now, 12 years and 211,000 miles later, the engine still runs great! It has had an oil leak for about 100,000 miles (which has always been a bit of a pain) and a few minor repairs, such as changing the CV joints, starter, alternator, front tie rods, tires, and routine maintenance. However, I have never once had to change the clutch or timing belt because it has a chain. The A/C still blows cold as ice. This car has been through everything with me over the years, but I finally bought a new car and am selling it. People at my work are literally fighting over the chance to buy it. Overall, it has been an amazing car!

  3. Presley Wiegand 2024-10-23

This vehicle has been such a joy to own! I've grown so attached to it that I'm hesitant to even consider getting a new car. If I weren't so tall, I would keep it forever. By the way, if you do decide to get one, just make sure to check if the recall on the windshield wipers has been done. If not, no worries - just take it to a dealership and they'll take care of it hassle-free! Living in Upstate NY, I can attest to how great this vehicle is in the snow. Of course, having good tires helps, but even when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to shovel, Snowcat (my affectionate nickname for her) plows right through for me. I have bottomed out a few times, but that's just because there are so many potholes where I'm from. I don't think it's a fault of the vehicle, just something to keep in mind.

  4. Nicklaus Dicki 2024-10-02

I've owned this car for a year and two months, during which time I've driven it for 29,000 miles. I purchased it with 85,000 miles on the clock, and it now has 114,000 miles. I'm happy to report that I've never had any issues with it, thanks to regular scheduled maintenance. When I first bought the car, I gave it a full tune-up, and it's been running smoothly ever since. Despite being in a front and back accident, my mechanic confirmed that the car is still in great condition. I've taken it on long trips to North and South Carolina, as well as driving it every day, and it averages an impressive 32-35 miles per gallon.

  5. Malcolm Cole 2024-09-17

Congratulations on your recent car purchase from an auction in Ohio! It's been about three months and you've already put 10,000 miles on it, and it's still running great with almost 130,000 miles on it. After a full brake job and tune-up, you've been nothing but happy with this sporty little car. If you do a lot of driving, I highly recommend this car, as I personally get an average of 29 mpg. The only issue I've encountered is that the transmission doesn't seem to want to let me downshift to 2nd when going around turns, but other than that, it's a keeper. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!
