2017 Audi A3 problems

The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.

The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)

The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.

The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.

The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.

In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.

In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.

Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.

Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

Negative 2017 Audi A3 car reviews

  1. Julius Nitzsche 2025-09-16

Hey there! Did you know that the rear differential on most cars is a long-lasting part that can go for over 150k miles? That's pretty impressive! However, I recently had an issue with the rear differential on my Audi, which failed at only 55k miles. Unfortunately, Audi informed me that the warranty only covers up to 50k miles. Just a heads up to be aware of this issue!

  2. Dee Grady 2025-08-14

Although the car is nice and fun to drive, I had a concerning experience when the transmission failed on my weeks-old 2015 A3, almost causing an accident. I was disappointed with my purchase at that moment. However, the issue was resolved with a brand new transmission. Unfortunately, the new transmission makes a loud ticking noise, which is concerning. Despite this setback, I remain confident in the quality of the car and its performance.

  3. Geoffrey Schuster 2025-08-04

It's quite surprising, but unfortunately the transmission had to be replaced. The car had barely been driven off the dealer's lot for a week. I had picked up the car on a Sunday, driven it to work for a week, and was tooling around on Saturday when I noticed the engine light came on, followed shortly by a yellow warning message that the car's reverse gear may not be working. However, the car was still considered drivable. I was a bit confused by this. I soon realized that the car would not move past 3rd gear and started making a high-pitched whine in the transmission. To cut a long story short, the car had to be placed on a flatbed tow truck (AWD) and taken back to the dealer. On Monday afternoon, I was informed that the car needed a new transmission and that it had to be shipped in. Unfortunately, the battery has had to be replaced twice. One night, the car wouldn't start and had to be towed. Overall, in 39 months, I've had to call Roadside Assistance 4 times.

  4. Otho Labadie 2025-05-24

I really enjoyed my 2015 A3 when I first purchased it, but unfortunately after driving 9,500 miles, I began to experience some issues. Although my car would turn over, it was unable to accelerate properly. I took it to the dealership, and they had my car for over two weeks before finally discovering that there was a defective spring on the cylinder. However, after getting my car back, I noticed that the EPC light would come on and I would lose power while trying to accelerate. I took it back to the dealer, but unfortunately, I am still waiting for answers on day three. Despite these issues, I still love the look, comfort and feel of my car when it's running smoothly. However, I am a bit concerned that I may continue to have problems with the car. On a separate note, the back seats are a bit cramped for normal sized adults, as their heads don't fit and there is no leg room. Additionally, the cup holders in the front are not very accommodating for larger drinks and can be difficult to use without spilling.

  5. Terence Rempel 2024-09-29

I purchased my A3 in March 2018 with 14k miles on it and have enjoyed driving it until recently. Unfortunately, on my way home, the engine started misfiring and went into limp mode. I initially thought it was a simple fix and had the ignition coils and spark plugs replaced, but the issue persisted. I then took it to the nearest dealership, which was two hours away, and unfortunately, my happy Audi story came to an end. The dealership informed me that my car, which now has 45k miles, requires a new engine, despite following the recommended oil change schedule. As I purchased the car used and the powertrain warranty expired four months ago, I am now responsible for the thirteen thousand dollar repair. Although I loved the look of this car, I should have been more cautious as Audi only used this engine for two years. I have asked the service manager multiple times what could have caused this or what I could have done to prevent it, but he has informed me that there was no way of knowing this was happening. I have reached out to Audi for assistance and am hoping for a positive outcome. In summary, it is important to have your car checked while it is still under warranty and to be cautious when purchasing a used car.

Positive 2017 Audi A3 car reviews

  1. Foster Parisian 2025-11-25

I've been driving my 2015 Audi A3 for a week now and I must say, it's been a great experience so far. I have the Premium model with the cold weather package upgrade, and I feel like it's an excellent value for the price. Despite being an entry-level model, it comes with leather seats, a sunroof, and an incredibly easy-to-use MMI system. The heated seats are a nice touch too! I was a bit worried about switching from my Jeep Commander to a smaller sedan, but the A3 feels confident and controlled on the road. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Working with my Audi sales rep was also a very pleasant experience, making the whole process easy and enjoyable.

  2. Elroy Pouros 2025-11-24

I absolutely adore my first Audi! The 1.8 engine is impressive, providing a strong pull at the lower end, and the grip is seemingly endless. I find myself constantly pushing the car's limits in the corners, but even when I reach the limit, the electric steering does an excellent job of keeping me informed. When I'm not pushing the car to its limits, it's incredibly composed and serene, especially at highway speeds. I've never been happier with a car, and I'm actually disappointed when I have to drive any other vehicle. The Audi service department is also fantastic. Whenever I go in for an oil change or any other service, they always provide me with a rental car and take care of everything quickly and efficiently.

  3. Maximillian Crist 2025-11-20

The car looks great, handles great, and is fast. The build quality is incredible too. I purchased a used 2015 model with only 6k miles on it, and after 18 months of use and 27k miles, I just sold it. While the off-the-line power is lacking, probably due to the turbo lag and CVT, I found that using sport mode helped, especially since I live in the city. The seats are not the most comfortable, becoming unbearable after more than an hour. The handling is decent, but it hits its limits quickly, and you may feel like the back end will spin out (even if it doesn't). The gas tank is too small and could use another 2 or 3 gallons. Unfortunately, there is no regular USB unless you buy their expensive adapter. There isn't much luxury to speak of for an Audi, and the depreciation was quite significant. However, the acceleration is beastly after the initial lag, and handling around turns within its limits is a blast. The basic stereo sounds great, and the build quality is superb, especially on the interior. The Scuba Blue paint really turns heads.

  4. Jaylan Hickle 2025-11-10

I've had BMWs, Audis (I even did a brief stint in a Honda Accord, yuck), but I found the A3 to be the most likable. Although I loved my A4 and S4, due to my older age, I needed something brand new that didn't sacrifice acceleration or comfort. The A3 is noticeably smaller than the A4 of today, but it's the same size as the A4 of previous generations. My wife and I fit up front perfectly and comfortably, and my 100lb lab fits in the back with plenty of trunk space. What attracts me to the A3 is the fact that it still feels almost as fast as my B8 S4, with fuel economy that doesn't hurt the wallet. The only downside is getting black, as it shows dirt easily. I urge everyone to take a test drive. It's a great commuter car and fantastic for weekend trips to the country, especially with the wonderful panoramic sunroof. Skip the nav, your iPhone can do everything anyway. Do get an upgraded stereo. I have the basic Audi Concert and it's not great when I want to jam. I have it turned almost 85-90. Get Bose or B&O.

  5. Domenic Robel 2025-10-22

I was considering trading my 2014 S4 for a 2017 A4, but unfortunately, the center display and contradictory options packages were quite annoying, which eliminated the A4 from my list. However, I then turned to the A3, which I had initially thought would be too small for my needs. But, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was perfect for my local driving needs, especially since I usually only have one passenger. I ended up purchasing a 2.0 Quattro Premium Plus with the sport package, and I must say, it accelerates much better than I expected, nearly as well as my S4 did. Being smaller and much lighter definitely helps in that regard. As one would expect of Audi, the fit and finish, both inside and out, is excellent. In terms of driving dynamics, it is very responsive and nimble, feeling much like my Porsche Boxster. However, it may not be the best car for those who have to carry a lot of cargo or more than one passenger. Additionally, it may not be the ideal car for those who drive a lot of highway miles due to its short wheelbase. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a sporty, high-quality smaller car.
