2017 Audi A3 problems

The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.

The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)

The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.

The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.

The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.

In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.

In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.

Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.

Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

Negative 2017 Audi A3 car reviews

  1. Terence Rempel 2024-09-29

I purchased my A3 in March 2018 with 14k miles on it and have enjoyed driving it until recently. Unfortunately, on my way home, the engine started misfiring and went into limp mode. I initially thought it was a simple fix and had the ignition coils and spark plugs replaced, but the issue persisted. I then took it to the nearest dealership, which was two hours away, and unfortunately, my happy Audi story came to an end. The dealership informed me that my car, which now has 45k miles, requires a new engine, despite following the recommended oil change schedule. As I purchased the car used and the powertrain warranty expired four months ago, I am now responsible for the thirteen thousand dollar repair. Although I loved the look of this car, I should have been more cautious as Audi only used this engine for two years. I have asked the service manager multiple times what could have caused this or what I could have done to prevent it, but he has informed me that there was no way of knowing this was happening. I have reached out to Audi for assistance and am hoping for a positive outcome. In summary, it is important to have your car checked while it is still under warranty and to be cautious when purchasing a used car.

  2. Adolf Wolff 2024-07-20

I had a brand new 2015 Audi A3 for about 6 months and unfortunately, it had a few issues such as windows that wouldn't go back up, burning oil, a transmission that stopped shifting, and nav and tech issues. While it was not an ideal situation, it would have been okay if Audi had fixed these problems and/or didn't attempt to charge me to fix them when I brought the car in for service. The ultimate problem with this car and the brand is that they don't provide adequate support after the purchase of the vehicle. I have heard many excuses on why they are not responsible for anything that goes wrong with the car. I decided to trade it for a BMW 3-Series and the difference in service was remarkable. I am happy with my decision and will not be purchasing an Audi again.

  3. Ladarius Hahn 2024-06-07

I really liked my little car and it had decent performance. Unfortunately, I had to replace the transmission after only 9300 miles and 8 months of ownership. While I understand that manufacturing defects can happen, I was disappointed with the low level of quality. I decided to trade the car in for a different brand of vehicle, but I was grateful that the repair was covered under warranty. I did find that the mixed city/highway gas mileage was not as good as advertised. I consistently got near the bottom of the range, even when I wasn't accelerating hard. However, I did get good mileage on long trips.

  4. Austen Bergstrom 2024-03-04

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my new 2015 Audi A3 Cabriolet that I leased from Audi Palo Alto in October. Recently, while driving up a hill enroute to Lombard street in San Francisco, I encountered some trouble with the car slipping backwards and refusing to accelerate upwards. It was definitely a stressful situation, as the cars behind me honked and drivers were understandably frustrated with the traffic. After a few attempts to restart the car, it finally started up again and I was able to make it up the hill. While I did have some trouble with the service team at Audi Palo Alto afterwards, I'm hopeful that we can work together to resolve any issues. Thanks for listening!

  5. Mac Windler 2024-02-11

Upon leasing the car, I took great care of it by purchasing snow tires/rims, clear bra on the front, weather tech mats, and an Audi service package. I also performed extra oil changes between their service intervals with Audi approved oil. The car has been well-maintained with only 20k miles. However, I have experienced some issues with the car overheating and shutting off on the highway, as well as multiple electrical problems such as the car not recognizing the key and brake light signals appearing on the dashboard. Despite taking the car to Audi for repairs, these issues have persisted intermittently. Additionally, the car was rear-ended while stopped at a light, resulting in significant damages and frame/uni repairs. After the repairs were completed by the Audi shop, the car began to vibrate badly between 65-80mph. Despite taking the car to a body shop and Sunnyside Audi service, the issue could not be resolved. While I am disappointed with the run-around I have received, I remain confident that a solution can be found.I am absolutely certain that the car did not have these issues before the accident. I even offered to pay for the replacement of the parts if it fixed the problem, but unfortunately it did not. As a first-time Audi owner, I have been disappointed with the runaround I have received regarding the clear issues and poor repair work on my car. The dealership even washed the car immediately after a paint job, which is not recommended until the paint has cured for at least 20-30 days. Despite my efforts, each department has sent me back to the next with no resolution. I have only had the car for a year and have already had to use a rental car for a total of 2-3 weeks. If anyone purchases this vehicle and experiences undisclosed problems, please contact me and I will provide you with records of incidents that you can use for recompense. I hope that whoever buys this car and has problems finds this post. The customer service has been terrible, with a lot of apologies but no real solutions. In contrast, I have owned Toyota, Honda, Ford, and Acura cars where the dealer takes responsibility for any problems. Acura even replaced a $600 engine part under extended warranty and fixed the same part free of charge two years later under good faith. That is what I call service. Audi has provided no service other than free rental cars and offers to sell me more things to maybe fix the problem.

Positive 2017 Audi A3 car reviews

  1. Wilbert Hegmann 2024-11-27

It sounds like you made a great choice with your car! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it so much. It's always exciting to try something new, especially when it comes to cars. I hope you continue to have a great time driving your Audi A3!

  2. Baylee Hirthe 2024-11-20

I researched the A3 and test drove it a handful of times before buying it. I find it surprising when reviewers criticize the car (or any new car, for that matter) on things that should be obvious. Before spending your hard-earned money, it's important to do your homework. Some people complain that the seats aren't heated, or that the GPS isn't what they expected. However, I believe that if you wanted certain features, you should have bought a car that had them. That being said, the A3 is a fantastic compact car. I love the way it looks and feels, and it has some great features. Follow up: After 6+ months and 6500 miles, my 2015 A3 Cabriolet still looks and runs great. I have had no issues with it. I had the oil change/5k service done at the dealer, and I am averaging 34.5 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg around town. It's a great combination of power, looks, and economy for a 4-passenger convertible. The retractable top folds into half of the trunk, allowing you to use the unused space for small luggage, making it more practical than a Mazda Miata or 'hard top' cabriolet.

  3. Zane Ullrich 2024-11-16

This is an impressive luxury car. The car handles and rides extremely well, going exactly where you point it. The ride is smooth and very quiet. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather seats feel amazing. Although the sound system and infotainment system are excellent, they may take some time to get familiar with. I am not a fan of the engine start/stop system, but I am glad that it can be turned off. Overall, this is a great compact luxury car that I look forward to driving every day and admiring after I park it.

  4. Marshall Donnelly 2024-10-07

I was a bit worried about switching from an A4 to an A3, but I was pleasantly surprised by the value I got for the price. Carlsbad Audi was fantastic to work with!

  5. Vinnie Ziemann 2024-09-27

I really like this car! It has a low MSRP for a luxury car and the interior is extremely well built. The ride is very quiet and comfortable, making driving a pleasure. Although the acceleration is slow, the fuel economy is good if you don't drive it too hard. The only downsides are the tight headroom in the backseat and the subpar cargo capacity, which is less than a BMW 3 series. However, I still think this is the best compact car ever! The cargo space is enough for most needs, unless you're carrying something huge, in which case you wouldn't want any compact sedan. Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion on this car and your experience may differ.
