2016 Audi A3 problems
The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.
The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.
First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)
The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.
The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.
The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.
In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.
In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.
Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.
Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

The Audi A3, a luxury sedan known for its advanced features, sleek design, and powerful engine, has been reported to have several common problems by owners. These issues can range from the start-stop system defect to faulty airbags and fuel tank suction pump malfunctions.
- Start-Stop System Defect: The start-stop system in the 2017-2020 Audi A3 may fail, causing a loss of power steering and delayed brake response. This can lead to accidents and make driving the vehicle difficult and risky. If a driver experiences similar symptoms, they should have their vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic immediately to avoid potential collisions.
- Faulty Airbags: The 2015 Audi A3 has been reported to have defective airbags due to electrical faults. The passenger occupant detection system may experience an electrical charge, causing the airbags to malfunction or deactivate. This can pose a significant safety risk to passengers.

- Engine Problems: Some Audi A3 owners have reported engine problems, including total engine failure, smoking exhaust, illuminating engine management lights, and decreased fuel economy. These issues can be caused by various factors, and it is recommended to consult a trained mechanic for diagnosis and repair.
- Gearbox Problems: Drivers have reported stiff gear changes, grinding noises, thumping noises, and transmission fluid oil leaks in the Audi A3's gearbox. These problems can impact the car's functioning and are crucial to address as soon as possible.
- Clutch Problems: Some Audi A3 owners have experienced a loss of power while driving, which can be caused by a failing or worn-out clutch. This can lead to a loss in acceleration and should be addressed by a specialist mechanic.
- Starting Problems: Drivers have reported difficulties starting the engine on their Audi A3 models, which can be caused by various issues, such as problems with engine coolant sensors, inadequate fuel pressure, or engine ignition problems. It is essential to have the problem diagnosed by a trained specialist to determine the cause and appropriate repair.

- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the connector and reroute the cable, free of charge. The recall began September 12, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 69Z4.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Volkswagen Golf, Golf SportWagen, GTI, Audi A3 sedan and A3 Cabriolet vehicles. Due to a problem with the suction pump inside the fuel tank, fuel may flow into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system.
- Consequence: As fuel accumulates in the EVAP system, it may leak out through the charcoal canister filter element. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suction pump, free of charge. The recall began November 2016. Volkswagen owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298, Audi owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are 20Y6 and 20Y5. This recall has been fully superseded by recall 24V-110.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2016 TT roadster, A3 cabriolet, A3 sedan and A3 e-tron, 2016-2017 TT coupe, 2017 A4 sedan and Q7 and 2015-2017 Q3 vehicles. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
- Consequence: If the side marker lights do not illuminate, the vehicle may be less visible at night, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will upload revised software to correct the issue, free of charge. This recall began November 2016. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 97CB.

The 2015 A3 quarto 4 door sedan is a solid, well-made car with great handling and ride. Although I didn't realize until after the purchase that I ended up with a 'stripped down' version, missing some storage in the front driver side, I still find it to be a great handling, sporty, and well-built car. Even after over a year of use, I still like the car very much. It seems well-built, solid, and still handles great while getting decent mileage for a gas model. If I were to ever buy another one, I'd probably go up one model to have a little more interior storage, trunk storage, plus heated front seats, fog lights, back-up camera, and maybe side assist.

I was a bit worried about switching from an A4 to an A3, but I was pleasantly surprised by the value I got for the price. Carlsbad Audi was fantastic to work with!

Easy and nimble. The engine has a great pull with lots of torque down low. Despite a tight suspension, the ride is smooth and comfortable. In my experience owning top sports cars and sedans, I can confidently say that this is the best performance sedan for the money.

I love the way my new car hugs the road when I drive. It drives like a dream! The stereo is great too, I can hear it perfectly clear with the top down!

I really liked my little car and it had decent performance. Unfortunately, I had to replace the transmission after only 9300 miles and 8 months of ownership. While I understand that manufacturing defects can happen, I was disappointed with the low level of quality. I decided to trade the car in for a different brand of vehicle, but I was grateful that the repair was covered under warranty. I did find that the mixed city/highway gas mileage was not as good as advertised. I consistently got near the bottom of the range, even when I wasn't accelerating hard. However, I did get good mileage on long trips.

I loved my 2015 Audi A3, despite the engine failure at 122,000 miles, which is a known issue for Audis of that era. However, I replaced the engine and found the rest of the car to be in good condition. Unfortunately, the alternator failed soon after, although it was unrelated to the engine issue. Despite this setback, I remain confident in the overall quality of my Audi A3.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my new 2015 Audi A3 Cabriolet that I leased from Audi Palo Alto in October. Recently, while driving up a hill enroute to Lombard street in San Francisco, I encountered some trouble with the car slipping backwards and refusing to accelerate upwards. It was definitely a stressful situation, as the cars behind me honked and drivers were understandably frustrated with the traffic. After a few attempts to restart the car, it finally started up again and I was able to make it up the hill. While I did have some trouble with the service team at Audi Palo Alto afterwards, I'm hopeful that we can work together to resolve any issues. Thanks for listening!

I had some issues with the car during the four months that I owned it. Unfortunately, the dealership was only able to have it for half of that time. Despite charging me for each visit, the power window issues persisted and could not be resolved. Additionally, the car would shake at certain speeds (40mph and then again at 60mph), and the dealership suggested that I purchase four new wheels to fix the issue. However, this did not solve the problem. The navigation system also experienced some intermittent issues, but eventually started working again. Overall, my experience with this car was not positive. Despite its attractive appearance, it was not worth the high price tag. In fact, I ultimately decided to trade it in to avoid further time, money, and sanity loss.

I bought this certified used car 10 months ago with only 15k miles on it. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the battery twice and also had a coolant leak that cost $1200. As a first-time Audi owner, this experience has left me feeling disappointed and unsure if I would purchase another Audi in the future. Interestingly, Audi has informed me that short drives can drain the battery due to the turbo, which I find quite unusual.
