2006 Audi A3 problems
The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.
The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.
First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)
The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.
The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.
The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.
In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.
In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.
Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.
Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

Common 2006 Audi A3 problems
The Audi A3, particularly the 2006 model, has been known to have several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues and their details:
- Stiff Gear Change (All Six-Speed Manuals): Drivers have reported difficulty moving between 1st and 2nd gears, with the gear stick feeling stiff. This problem affects A3s with a six-speed manual gearbox and is due to a gearbox synchromesh fault. Although it can be expensive to have a professional install a replacement, it is relatively easy to replace the worn synchromesh yourself with a low-cost part.
- Weak Brake Pedal: The brake pedal on the A3 requires excessive pressure to start working, indicating a problem with the brake vacuum pump. This issue is particularly prevalent in A3s built between 1996 and 1999, where the brake vacuum pump is known to wear rapidly. To fix this issue, check the pipe for cracks, order a replacement from BreakerYard, and replace the damaged pump.
- Engine Misfire: The A3 may misfire, leading to a loss of power and the Check Engine Light coming on. This issue is usually caused by an engine coil failure, which is more likely to occur in cars with high mileage. Replacing the coils is the primary solution, but in rare cases, replacement spark plugs may also be required.
- Suspension Problems: When driving over speed bumps or rough surfaces, a knocking noise may come from the suspension. This problem is typically caused by broken track rod ends, which can be fixed by fitting replacement track rod ends.
- DPF Warning Light: If the DPF warning light appears on the dashboard, it is usually caused by a blocked DPF due to the car only being driven around town. To resolve this issue, you may need to replace the DPF or perform a regeneration process.
- Transmission Problems: The 2006 Audi A3's transmission problems are well-known among car owners. Many have reported that their transmissions would slip and cause issues, leading to costly repairs.
- Oil Burning: Many 2006 A3 engines burn oil at the rate of a quart every 1500-3000 miles, which seems to be related to the PCV system. To mitigate this issue, it is recommended to use synthetic VW 502 approved oil and change it every 5-6000 miles.
- Timing Belt and Water Pump Failure: Some A3 owners have reported timing belt and water pump failures. To prevent this issue, it is advisable to replace these components as recommended by the manufacturer.
These common problems with the Audi A3 2006 model can significantly impact the car's performance and reliability. It is essential to be aware of these issues and take preventative measures to avoid or mitigate them.

EVERY SINGLE DEALERSHIP THAT I HAVE CONTACTED INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE BAY AREA HAVE ALL SAID THE MATERIALS ARE 'ON BACK ORDER' 'THIS CONTINUES TO BE SO SINCE JANUARY 2017. WE HAVE TWO CHILDREN AND RELY ON OUR AUDI WHICH IS ALSO OUR ONLY CAR. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO GET ANOTHER CAR AT THIS TIME AND TRY TO USE PUBLIC TRANSIT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BUT NOT ALWAYS REALISTIC OR SAFE FOR A BABY WHO WAS BORN PREMATURELY. WE HAVE TO HAVE OUR CAR FIXED BUT AUDI SIMPLY MAILING OUT RECALL NOTICES WITHOUT THE SUPPLIES IN PLACE TO CORRECT THIS POTENTIALLY FATAL DEFECT IS NOTHING MORE THAN THEIR LEGAL DUE DILIGENCE ON PAPER AND NOT CORRECTIVE. - Summary: MY COMPLAINT IS REGARDING THE GLACIAL PACE WHICH AUDI HAS TAKEN TO REMEDY THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH MY AUTOMOBILE. WE WERE PROVIDED WITH A TEMPORARY FIX THAT REPLACED THE ORIGINAL AIRBAG INFLATION DEVICE WITH A NEW ONE THAT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM IN APRIL OF 2016. I FIRST CONTACTED AUDI ON MAY 3RD. OF 2017 TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE STATUS OF A PERMANENT REPAIR FOR A FAULTY, AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY, AIRBAG IN MY 2006 AUDI A3 AND NO PARTS WERE AVAILABLE AT THE TIME. I CONTACTED THEM AGAIN TODAY, OCTOBER 16TH 2018 AND THERE ARE STILL NO PARTS AVAILABLE TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR. THIS IS ALL WELL AFTER I WAS INITIALLY NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL TO BEGIN WITH. IT WILL HAVE BEEN YEARS SINCE THIS RECALL WAS PUT IN PLACE BY THE TIME I RECEIVE A PERMANENT FIX WHILE MY WIFE DRIVES OUR TWO CHILDREN AROUND IN A CAR WITH A POTENTIALLY LETHAL AIRBAG IN IT. I'M SHOCKED AND DISGUSTED BY THE LACK OF URGENCY THAT AUDI HAS DISPLAYED IN NEGLECTING TO FIX MY CAR AS WELL AS, WHAT I IMAGINE, ARE THOUSANDS OF OTHER AUDI OWNERS WAITING ON A FIX WHILE DRIVING A DEATH TRAP. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO FORCE AUDI'S HAND AND COMPLETE THE RECALL REPAIRS THEY ARE BEHOLDEN TO.

- Summary: "TAKATA RECALL" I HAVE RECEIVED NUMEROUS NOTICES FROM AUDI OF AMERICA, INC., MOST RECENTLY MAY, JUNE AND JULY 2018. THESE NOTICES ASK ME TO CONTACT AN AUDI DEALER REGARDING A SAFETY RECALL FOR DRIVER FRONTAL AIRBAG INFLATOR (TAKATA) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO HAVE THE AIRBAG REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. I CONTACTED AUDI STEVENS CREEK IN SAN JOSE, CA, AND WAS ABLE TO HAVE A TEMPORARY AIRBAG REPLACEMENT INSTALLED ON JUNE 2, 2017. AT THAT TIME, I WAS TOLD A PERMANENT AIRBAG WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED IN THE FUTURE WHEN THE PART ARRIVED. I HAVE CALLED THIS DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, MOST RECENTLY SEPT. 4, 2018, AND WAS TOLD EACH TIME THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PART AND DO NOT KNOW WHEN THEY WILL GET IT. I NOW WANT TO SELL MY CAR AND MAY BE UNABLE TO DO SO BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. I ALSO FEEL I AM AT RISK IF GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT IF THIS BAG IS NOT PERMANENTLY REPLACED. THE VERY FIRST NOTICE I RECEIVED FROM AUDI AMERICA WAS APRIL 2016 REGARDING ITS SAFETY RECALL OF THIS TAKATA AIRBAG. IT IS NOW SEPT. 2018, AND I STILL DO NOT HAVE A PERMANENT AIRBAG REPLACEMENT. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

- Summary: TAKATA RECALL. NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 16V079. AUDI ACTION CODE 69N2. RECALL START DATE FEB 09, 2016. MY ISSUE IS THAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR AN "INTERIM REPAIR" FOR MY DEFECTIVE TAKATA AIRBAG INFLATOR FOR 2 YEARS 4 MONTHS AND 20 DAYS AT THE DATE OF WRITING THIS COMPLAINT. I DRIVE MYSELF AND MY FAMILY IN MY VEHICLE, AND ACCORDING TO THE AUDI NATIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE I SPOKE WITH, IT IS BOTH MY PASSENGER AND DRIVER AIRBAG INFLATORS THAT NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS EXTREMELY CONCERNING AS I DRIVE MY FAMILY IN MY VEHICLE. THE LACK OF INFORMATION AUDI HAS BEEN ABLE TO GIVE TO ME REGARDING WHEN PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE HAS LED ME HERE. QUITE FRANKLY, I HAVE RUN OUT OF PATIENCE, AS I'M DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT CAN POTENTIALLY CAUSE MY FAMILY AND MYSELF HARM/DEATH, WHERE THE DEVICE (INFLATOR/AIRBAG) SHOULD BE KEEPING US SAFE. THERE IS NO WAITING LIST TO BE ADDED TO FOR THE PARTS, AND THE LACK OF ANY SPECIFICITY OF WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE IS BEYOND ABSURD, ESPECIALLY SINCE I'VE BEEN WAITING AND CALLING THEM EVERY SO OFTEN FOR MORE THAN 2 YEARS NOW. I HAVE CALLED ALL OF THE LOCAL AUDI DEALERSHIPS IN MY AREA FOR INFORMATION REGARDING THE TAKATA RECALL AND PART AVAILABILITY, ALONG WITH THE AUDI NATIONAL NUMBER, ALL TO NO AVAIL OR ANY SPECIFICITY OF GETTING THIS PROBLEM ADDRESSED.

Positive 2006 Audi A3 car reviews

I leased the car in October. Unfortunately, in July, the AC broke down during a heatwave. Despite Audi's best efforts, it took a month to fix the issue and they had to replace the compressor twice. A year later, the fuel pump broke down while I was driving on the highway, which was a scary experience. Recently, the car wouldn't start and when the Audi mechanic came to check it, the engine started smoking. After a week, they informed me that the oil pump was broken and they needed to replace the engine. Due to these issues, I no longer feel safe driving with my kids in the car and have decided to get rid of it. It's been a total disappointment.

The 06 A3 is a well-engineered car that performs fantastically 95% of the time. Although there have been a few issues, such as the a/c compressor and radio, these have been resolved with persistence and the help of an executive. While there have been a few other minor issues over the course of 21,000 miles, the overall reliability is good. It can be a challenge to get the dealer to address any issues, but with the right approach, it is possible to get them resolved.

The performance of the high torque V6 and efficient DSG transmission is excellent. Although the DSG and drive by wire programming may require a small amount of technique adjustment for smooth take off, this seems to have improved considerably over a few miles of use and may be driver as well as auto break in. Additionally, the handling and braking are also excellent. While the ride is a bit stiff with the sport suspension, it has also improved with just a few miles. For us, it is definitely a better compromise over the floaty ride of our previous vehicle. We placed a high priority on AWD, which is only available in the 3.2.

I recently test drove the new '06 3.2 DSG Quattro and I absolutely loved the DSG system! It was incredibly smooth and responsive. The handling was also impressive, with the Quattro system providing plenty of grip. Despite its small exterior, the interior felt spacious, and the open sky system was a must-have feature. The only downside was that the 3.2 Quattro was a bit pricey, with a fully equipped model costing $38k. However, the lighter 2.0T is still quick and more reasonably priced.

It's great to hear that you find the car fun to drive and that it gives you confidence in its ability to go where you want it to. The overall package sounds really nice!

The reliability of the product has been consistently poor, requiring multiple visits to the shop in the past six months. Unfortunately, both the warranty and extended warranty have proven to be ineffective. As a result, there is a constant concern about what may break next, which is particularly concerning when transporting a seven year old.

I just test drove an Audi A3 with DSG and was amazed! The DSG has converted me from a committed manual transmission driver. The A3 was fast and fun. However, I am looking forward to the new VW GTI that is now on sale in Europe. It has the same engine and transmission but is lighter, bigger, better looking, and cheaper.

I ended up buying this car based on a test drive of another A3. Just a heads up, my actual car had some chronic hesitation with ignition, and even with the software update, it was rather sluggish. However, I would definitely buy this car again if I had the option to test drive the actual car offered. Also, keep in mind that the trade-in value for this car may be less than you expect at any time.
